“The chips are nice.” Said Zaria. “I…don’t think I went this far south very much.” She scratched her head, as if trying to prod information out of the brain beneath. Answers were not forthcoming.[break][break]
“I’m curious what sort of weapon you’d prefer.” She said, looking to Howard. “There’s nuance to your choice. Spears give you reach you wouldn’t otherwise have, especially when you use it in tandem with a shield. Glaives are excellent. Halberds are probably the best weapons ever made.”[break][break]
“Spoken by a swordswoman who’s never seen a gun.” Navy held up his long, cumbersome blunderbuss.[break][break]
“Swords are pure.” Zaria said without reservation. “When I was…” She spoke as if remembering something new. “…young, I always looked up to knights and heroes. A sword is a hero’s weapon. I wanted to be one, too.” It was her turn to look up wistfully at the blotched sky, just as they came into sight of the walls of Wedgehurst.[break][break]
“Told you we’d make good progress.” Navy smiled. “It’s all about knowing how to cut through the right fields. Amazed I remembered all the right places to go.”[break][break]
Standing on top of the gate, wielding a halberd, was none other than…[break][break]
“Deputy Dave?” Dave, one of Navy’s oldest deputies, looked down in shock at the three travelers and their Pokemon.[break][break]
“Travelers? From Postwick?” He gawked. “How in the world did you lot survive the j-”[break][break]
“The rider,” another voice called, “The rider. Arceus, the Pale Rider is back.”[break][break]
And suddenly, on the other side of the gate, there was an outcry of noise.

In his squire’s voice was a hint of…envy? A bitter grudge that Shirley had not joined them in the dream? Navy couldn’t say. All he knew was that they were one step closer to getting back.[break][break]
“We’ll be in Wedgehurst by midday tomorrow.” Navy announced. “Valkyrie will make it easy going, even if we can’t all ride her. We won’t have to worry about the hands as much.”[break][break]
He couldn’t believe it – any of this. When things settled down and they slid into their bedrolls, Navy stayed awake for a while, gazing up at the sky. It reminded him of that first day of the first cycle, when he fell asleep in Motostoke. Some part of him thought he would close his eyes and wake up back in Hoenn. As it happened, he did not. He woke up in this Galarian dream. He remembered the dread he felt upon that realization, which he was sure was shared by all among their company.[break][break]
Just so with the second cycle. Navy roused in the early morning light under the same purple sky. A smarter man, like FERNANDO SILPH, could probably take the data from their first stay and calculate precisely how long a day in Galar was in Hoennian seconds. Navy, bereft of a scientific mind but blessed with a romantic heart, understood things would be fine if they hurried.[break][break]
Only when he stood up, checking his pistol, did he notice the crystal hanging from one of Valkyrie’s braids. Zaria noticed it, too, and took it in hand.[break][break]
Inside the crystal, they saw the land of the dead. Each of them was a ghost, their lives all ended prematurely. It was a world of limbo, a borderland between this life and the next. It was a promise of what would come, should they lose this war.[break][break]
That crystal, too, disappeared into Zaria’s grasp.[break][break]
“Let’s hit the road.” Navy said, walking beside Valkyrie rather than riding her. He did not want to kindle further jealousy in his friend’s heart, not now. “Here’s hoping we can find you a weapon when we get to Wedgehurst.”

Zaria and Navy were united by the call to action. Both stood up. Zaria draw her black blade. All Navy had to his name was one feather. All the same, he drew it, standing just behind the lady knight. Two eyes in the darkness turned into ten, into twenty. A herd of Wooloo found them in the darkness, gazing out at interlopers in this land.[break][break]
Were this modern Galar, the sheep would leave them be. Wooloo were herbivores, subsisting off of berries. Something about this land roused within them killing instincts.[break][break]
“We shall table this discussion for now.” Zaria said, her words as decisive as a cut from the blade in her hands.[break][break]
“Agreed. I, uh, I’m not a swordfighter, but I’ve got your back.” With that in mind, Zaria took the lead. She swiped away the first of the Wooloo that stampeded into the camp, only to have another come from the opposite side.[break][break]
Navy’s bladework was clumsy. He moved a mite too slow. The Wooloo meant to crash into him…[break][break]
And then, it simply did not. A barrage of astral force sent it flying into the darkness. The sheep had no time to even murmur a death rattle. From the darkness rode a steed as black as midnight.[break][break]
“Valkyrie!” Navy cried. Sitting in a holster on the side of her saddle was a gun. Navy approached her without fear or hesitation. Grabbing the gun, he moved it as if born to hold the weapon. At last, Zaria and Navy were equals.[break][break]
Her iron head and his anchor shot blasted them back into the darkness.[break][break]
“Arceus, girl.” Navy huffed after all was said and done. The Rider, at last, had his steed. Navy hugged the horse, happy to have his old friend. “Arceus, I’ve missed you.”

The words rouse him to ungentlemanly action. Dragonslayer stays precisely where he is, floating above her. He acts as both reminder and literal threat. Sheriff Navidson grabs her, roughly, and hauls her up. He treats her like a dangerous thing, the sort of feral animal that would bite his throat out given half a chance. His hands search her body for other weapons. Inevitably, one is found and tossed aside. Her hands are forced behind her back, and she is cuffed.[break][break]
Her words force intrusive thoughts through his mind, ones he fights down with a swordsman’s precision. Hana is hauled up, kept close, his hand going for an empty pokeball found on her person. Alone in the woods, without the eyes of the press on him, he can focus purely on surviving this captured feral tiger. Doublade disappears in red light, as does her Empoleon. Wukong is recalled, and they are alone.[break][break]
“You have the right to remain silent.” Sheriff Navidson reads her the rights all criminals are due. Not like you’ll listen to that part.[break][break]
“Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.” Handcuffs bind her hand behind her back, the first step on the road to proper justice. Lancelot, a Corviknight that serves as a poor replacement for Ironsides, jumps out of his pokeball. Navy mounts him, holding the swordswoman like a knight might hold a princess.[break][break]
“You have the right to an attorney. If you can’t afford one, one will be provided to you.” His gray eyes look down at her, the expression of a predatory hawk looking down on a wounded animal. “Do you understand these rights as I have said them to you?”

“I don’t think intentions matter half as much as the result.” Zaria said at once, gripping a wooden spoon like a dagger. “An evil action is an evil action, even if it’s done for good.”[break][break]
Navy, who was opening his mouth to address Howard, instead looked to Zaria. A sad smile crossed his lips, the smile of a man that had nothing but time to contemplate. The road, he found, was good for that. The road left a man alone with himself and his past. Without humanity to filter out those thoughts, for most of twenty long years, he was forced to reckon with himself.[break][break]
“I’d be where Howard’s standing if I made one or two choices different in my life.” He turned to look at his squire. “I almost joined Rocket twice. The first time was when I was seventeen. They were just another color gang back then. No one thought they’d turn into…” What was Rocket? Revolutionaries? Terrorists? A crime syndicate? As both men knew, that would depend on which side emerged from the storm as the victor.[break][break]
“Anyway. The second time was right after Gabe died. I almost took a job from them. I was pissed. I hated the League as much as I did Rocket for letting a kid his age go into Sootopolis and get himself killed. I thought…maybe if I got on the inside, I could figure out who killed him. Surely it’s gotta be one of the big wigs.”[break][break]
Only with age did he realize it was an arrogant thought. Whoever killed his brother, he deduced, was no one special. To presume otherwise was pretentious at best, dangerous at worst.[break][break]
“I would’ve done awful things while I figured that out.” He looked back to Zaria. “And I’d be standing just where Howard is. And I didn’t not do those things because I’m a good person. I did them because…I don’t want the kid who gave me my name to be disappointed in me, any more than I want my best friend to look at me and say ‘ah, so that’s that kind of person you are in this story.”[break][break]
The kind of person he is, for the record, is an idiot and a hypocrite.[break][break]
“But you didn’t join them, or act on those thoughts.” She spoke as some impartial judge of the universe, bereft of context, left only with moral law to guide her words.[break][break]
“No, but it was for someone else. I don’t think I’m any better than Howard.” His smile faded, tone stern. “People are going to die. Maybe Shred. Maybe Baki. Maybe just a whole bunch of people your history and the League’s records won’t care about. That’s on you, and no matter how hard I hit you, nothing I can do will hurt you worse than that. Hoenn’s people will die by their protector’s hands.”

“Cause you’re my friend.” It’s simple logic, almost childlike. If there’s one thing that the heroic rider had in common with a wolf or a dog, it was their base, common, loyalty. Navy looked at the fire, wondering how much time had passed in the waking world. Milliseconds? Seconds? Minutes? Was Regice, at that very moment, rampaging through Dewford while their bodies lay frozen within Eternatus’s bowels.[break][break]
“That doesn’t mean there won’t be a reckoning for what you’ve done.” He clarifies, feeling the need to state that as a lawman. “But beating you up just ‘cause I’m mad you wronged me? No, I’m past all that.”[break][break]
He leaned back, and looked up at the nebula above them. It managed to color the night sky beautifully. After a lifetime under a Slateport sky, he found himself appreciating Eternatus’s mist, if not its cause.[break][break]
“When Winter showed up at my house, I saw where that road goes. I’d make a damn good Rocket Beast. Probably the best of them.” An arrogant statement, he knows, and one his heart longs to put to the test against Zev Harcourt or Tempest Quinn. “But I want to be better than that, Howard. There’ll come a day where I bring you in for what you did, but it’ll be because it’s the right thing to do, and not because I hate you.” His eyes meet Howard’s.[break][break]
“And it’ll be after I beat you fair and square, your Pokemon against mine. The League has to be better than Rocket, or we lose the war.”[break][break]
It was at that moment, as the food finished and the mingled aromaa of beef and carrots filled the air, that Zaria chose to interject.[break][break]
“Rocket. That word I know.” The blonde knight turned to Howard. “You don’t seem a bad man, Howard Slayte. What brought you to those…” She glanced to Navy, as if asking for help with the next word, “…brigands?”[break][break]
“Try ragamuffins. It’s the most complicated word I remember from the dictionary.”

“It will as long as we find Valkyrie.” Which, physically, they did not. All they found besides poisoned hands and poisoned Pokemon was a single black carrot. Were it not for Navy’s eyes, they would not have even found that much. It sat in the middle of another dead field. A lone tuft of green separated it from the gray and black all around. Plucking up the dark carrot, Navy nodded to himself.[break][break]
“That’d sure keep her around.” He held the carrot up for Howard and Zaria’s inspection. “Hattori found a carrot like this. It’s what got me Valkyrie’s attention the first go-round.” Tossing it to Howard and looking at the sinking sun, he said “Let’s set up camp. No use going past sundown.”[break][break]
Before his first stint in Galar, Navy was useless outdoors. He was a creature made for city streets, with all their intrigues, not empty countryside. Somewhere along the way, he learned to appreciate the peace and the intricacies of staying alive.[break][break]
All of that to say, he wasn’t useless once Howard unloaded his big pack and they got to setting up camp. They were better provisioned than he ever was on his first trip. It made him wish, not for the first time, that Howard had really been there.[break][break]
“Hey, Howard. You’ve read Rocket reports of what happened at the Tomb, yeah?” He asked after they got their stew to cooking. “Do you think you would’ve ended up in the sword or shield?”

“No, doubt she’ll be able to fit us all.” Navy said simply, suddenly a different man as they stepped out into the waste land beyond. Galar’s Route 1, in the proper course of time, was hailed as a pleasant little drive. A man from Postwick could drive up to Wedgehurst for some fish and chips in the afternoon and be back in time to catch a GBC series.[break][break]
In the dream, dead crops stretched out all around them. Scarecrows sat in empty fields like crucified thieves. Their hands, skeletal, pointed down a path leading nowhere. Nothing, as of yet, had attacked them.[break][break]
“Moment to moment, it’s not much worse than the Deep Sea.” Navy spoke while cool gray eyes surveyed the path ahead. “It’s only when something spots you that things can get bad.” A hand rose up sharply, ordering them to stop. “Sure.” She stepped forward, her steps careless. A hand shot out, scratching her across the chest. Grunting in protest, she brought down the massive sword in a two-handed swing. The hand had no mouth, but it died screaming.[break][break]
“You’re lucky you have that armor on.” The rider said grimly, turning to Howard. “It’s not the hands themselves that give you trouble. Everything out here’s poisoned. One scratch and you die a slow death.”[break][break]
A small pause, his eyes scanning again, wondering if rumors of a dread steed were just that.[break][break]
“I’m not a scientist, but I think Calyrex left a little of his grace in the steed. It kept me safe from the poison, and let sleep it off if I got infected.”

Joey looked at Howard, puzzled. When he spoke, it was with the slow hesitation of one fumbling through an unexpected question. His lips mouthed a word, but it was not one voice that spoke.[break][break]

A moment of intense pain, like a nail jammed through their head, was followed by silence. Navy leaned back like a man caught in a drunken stupor. Joey carried on like he seen nothing out of the ordinary.[break][break]
“Anyroad, you’ll find supplies at Chester’s general store. Most o’ the goods are grown in town here. It’s suicide to go out, but maybe with that black steel the miss has, you’ll manage. I’ll see if I can rouse ya up a map.” With a nod, Joey was off.[break][break]
“Howard…don’t ask people about tera again.” Navy whispered, rubbing at his temples.[break][break]
Zaria, who was much better at hiding her pain, focused on Howard.[break][break]
“Why do I need a reason to help people?” An answer that resounded with Navy. He always fancied himself, especially when he was younger, a worldly man. Cynical, in a cool hip way – like all the swinging dicks in old detective novels. He did not recognize until Galar a certain romance in his own character, a willingness to waive fees for customers who passed through the doors of Navidson Solutions who really, truly needed his help.[break][break]
“Couldn’t have said it better myself.” Navy fought off his migraine and stood up. “Besides, who’d say no to the chance to fight a dragon?”[break][break]
“The dragon.” Zaria corrected.[break][break]
“Come on. Looks like the day’s still young. If we get those supplies quick, we can make good headway. I haven’t been this way in a long, long time, but I can remember well enough how to navigate us a good way there.”

“I don’t know anything about any ‘four lords’.” Zaria said in a voice that betrayed her own annoyance at the statement. “I remember my name, I remember my brother, I remember…” She stopped mid bite, expression meditative. Zaria looked as if she was trying to thread the world’s tiniest needle, like any small error would force her to start all over.[break][break]
“…that there is a land that needs you.” Navy finished for her. “A land not your own.” She looked surprised. Green eyes met steel eyes and both looked at the other with understanding.[break][break]
“Just so.”[break][break]
“That’s how it was when I rode Valkyrie. My homeland is Hoenn, but I came to love Galar as my own. No land deserves a poisoned sky.” Leaning against the wall, his eyes looked once more to the fathomless purple firmament.[break][break]
Zaria opened her mouth to speak, but a sudden intrusion interrupted her. Joey, a bit player in this character, ran up to them, breathless. After a moment of catching his breath, the barman stood up straight and addressed the Rider.[break][break]
“You three’ve got a certain look in your eyes. It’d take a right idiot to try and go up north to Wedgehurst.” His serious expression cracked. Like a ray of sun through the clouds, he smiled. “Or a hero. I found somethin’ near the Weald, after the battle. Maybe it’ll help you, maybe it won’t…” Joey, a character most who call themselves heroes on the grand stage would ignore, whether that stage be Galarian myth or Dewford, produced a crystal from his pocket.[break][break]
It was clear, clear as spring water. Navy and Zaria saw their own reflection, though the woman’s reflection was cast in a wolfish smile. Both reached out to grab it on instinct.[break][break]
And both saw a vision of a world without war. In that world, children set at ten without a care. With a partner Pokemon at their side, they journeyed far. Hopes, dreams, and prayers filled their hearts. They camped under clear skies on their quest to be ~~knights~~ trainers. A fleeting vision of a normal world, one that can never be so long as the long shadow of a red R hangs over Hoenn, or Eternatus over Galar.[break][break]
The crystal seemed to disappear, absorbed into Zaria. Both Rider and knight leaned back, breathless and shaken by the experience.[break][break]
“…never seen that happen with no one who touched it before.”

It fell upon him to tell a story. As they once more stepped out into a cool Galarian afternoon, a nostalgic smile crossed the Rider’s face. A Rider without a horse was like a Pokemon Trainer without a Charizard, or a Historian without history. They simply could not exist without one another.[break][break]
“This was the last place I saw Valkyrie, one of the high king’s two horses.” A steed as black as midnight, eyes pale like a full moon. “A Spectrier. The other horse is called Glastrier. Herds of them now roam Hoenn, but the High King can draw out the steed’s true potential. Remember that well.” In another world, they were enemies. He should not have told Howard anything of the sort. Here, they were brothers, and they needed one another to survive.[break][break]
Ahead, they spied Zaria atop the gate. Above their heads flew a Wooloo, screaming as it crashed into the trees on the edge of the Slumbering Weald. A small flock of Rookidee decided discretion was the better part of valor and flew away.[break][break]
“How many times must I tell you?! This town is now under my protection!” She shouted over the wall.[break][break]
“Someone’s hard at work.” Navy smiled, before raising his voice and calling up to her. “Zaria. Quit it with the baseball routine. I brought you some food!”[break][break]
Her head snapped around, sword returning to its scabbard. Food brought her down from the high gate so quick that he thought she was playing into his baseball talk, although he soon remembered she had no notion of what baseball was.[break][break]
“It took you two long enough!” She reached up, clasped her helmet, lifted it…[break][break]

[break][break]
And smiled.[break][break]
“Beef stew and mead? The drink of warriors!” Zaria laughed a girlish laugh, sounding just as young as she looked.[break][break]
Acreus, she can’t be older than twenty.[break][break]
“Hand it over!” Zaria insisted, snatching the bowl and sitting down on the grass without ceremony. With a shrug, Navy joined her.[break][break]
“So,” Zaria asked with a full mouth and none of a knight’s dignity, “did you two learn anything”

“Galar doesn’t have a king.” Joey spoke in Galar as he did in the long ago future of Hoenn, with a gruff homely accent that spoke of tilled earth and home brewed ale. “Not since the last set disappeared five years back. All the heroes left.” He shot Howard an odd look, as if he asked a Unovan if he was watching the gym circuit. [break][break]
“The only ruler we have’s the four folk terrorizing the north. Them that came after the Rider and the other heroes left. Didn’t even kill the skeletal dragon right…” [break][break]
Navy put down his tankard with a forceful slam, looking up at Joey as if for the first time. He searched the illusory barman’s face as if it hid some great, profound truth. Whatever he found there didn’t satisfy the Rider. [break][break]
“Eternatus is back.” He said. [break][break]
“Nesting in Wyndon, beyond the poisoned mist. So long as His four chosen horsemen live, no one is getting up there.” Joey slid over beef stew to go with the sour news. Navy ate hungrily. He realized as he took the first bite that it had been a full day since he last ate. When Howard sounded the attack, he had been fast asleep after an early night. [break][break]
“Are the roads as dangerous as they once were?” Navy asked as his fingers twirled in a go on gesture. [break][break]
“Oh yeah. Don’t even think the Pale Rider could get through that mist. Postwick and Wedgehurst manage to stay in contact cause somethin’ keeps the roads safe.” Joey began polishing a glass, a habit shared by his doppelgänger. “But no one’s been able to get back to Motostoke since the battle between the dragon and the black knight. ” [break][break]
“…thank you, Joey.” Navy stood up, taking another tankard and plate for Zaria. “One last thing. It’s a horse guarding the road, isn’t it?” [break][break]
“Yeah. A black horse.” [break][break]
“We’ve got work to do, Howard.” Navy said definitively, “First thing’s first, we need to get to Wedgehurst. That’s the first step to getting home.” They’d find more answers there, even if they would be paid for with peril.

“Huh. Guess this tavern’s been around for a while.” Stepping into the place, he found it surprisingly full. Postwick didn’t seem like a big town, but the Whompin’ Wooloo was fit to burst. Folk from all walks of life chattered excitedly, as if there wasn’t a purple storm raging overhead.[break][break]
“I don’t remember how I paid for things.” The rider said with a mace’s bluntness. “Spent most of my time out in the wild. I hunted, or people supplied me when I got to town. In Motostoke, Penny and Ollie made sure I was fed.” Wealth as a concept hadn’t existed.[break][break]
Reaching into his saddlebag, he found that he had a small handful of coins. It would do for now, but they would have to find their own money soon enough, or else work their way across Galar.[break][break]
Fortunately for the two of them, there were two empty seats at the bar. Sitting down, Navy finally felt the weight of his fifty years. Slumping down into his seat, he felt an incessant need to nap.[break][break]
“Keep your head up, stranger.” The barman said. His voice roused Navy back up. It was the same barman that served him drinks in Dewford. “Here, have some mead.” Pouring the drink of warriors for the two of them, he slid their tankards over.[break][break]
“Meat, too, Joey.” He said on instinct. Joey the barman nodded.[break][break]
“Howard, you’re better at this than me.” He nodded to his squire. “What in the world do we ask first to unpack what’s going on here?”

“Sunny.” She repeated, the word half a chuckle. “Next, you’ll tell me the food has flavour.” Her words were punctuated with a strong kick, throwing open a wooden gate that marked the barrier between Postwick and the Weald.[break][break]
Stepping through, it was like they stepped into a different world. At last, they could see the sky. Navy’s eyes turned heavensward. There, he beheld a terrible truth. Above them was a blotted, purple sky – the same sky from the terrible nightmares of those first ten years.[break][break]
“But…how?” Navy asked as his blood ran cold. “We slew Eternatus.”[break][break]
His answer would have to wait. Humans were running towards them, ones who looked equal parts surprised and angry.[break][break]
“Oi!” The first to reach them cried. “’Ow do you lot get off, destroyin’ our gate? There’s wild Pokemon out—” Only in the middle of his sentence did reality catch up to the stranger. He realized he was speaking to humans – unfamiliar humans, who stepped out of the Slumbering Weald.[break][break]
“You lot came from the Weald? ‘Ow’d you survive out there?”[break][break]
“Good luck.” Navy answered. “And our pal’s sword.” His head inclined to Zaria’s blade, only now returned to its scabbard.[break][break]
“Sorry about your gate.” Zaria said, suddenly sheepish. “If you have tools, I can see about repairing it.”[break][break]
“Wait, wait. ‘Ang on. That blade’o yours. That’s like the one the heroes used.” Another villager said. “Like the Rider.”[break][break]
“Miss, if you’ve got a weapon like that, you can make it up t’us by watchin’ the walls for a spell. Anyone with a hero’s weapon’s welcome here in Postwick.”[break][break]
“If that’s the case, can you point us to where we can get something to eat.” Taverns are a cornerstone of fantasy for a reason. An adventurer needed his stomach filled just as bad as he needed information. A tavern could give him both.[break][break]
“That’ll be the Wompin’ Wooloo. Just up the road.” The woman pointed.[break][break]
“…I suppose this is where we part for now.” Said Zaria, turning to accompany the villagers to the north. A man rushed past them with tools, rushing to repair the destroyed gate.[break][break]
“We’ll be on shortly. Howard and I’ll bring you some food. Wait up for us.”[break][break]
“…you’ll soon see what I mean about the food.” Zaria departed on that ominous note.[break][break]
“Well,” Navy said to Howard, “Civilization. I don’t like this sky, Howard.”

The ironclad knight listened, and finally nodded. Her grip on her sword never relaxed, not when they remained in hostile territory.[break][break]
“As it happens, I was heading there myself.” Turning, she started down the path. Three steps later, she stopped again, going stock still. Zacia inclined her head back towards them. “And cut it with the formalities. I gave you my name for a reason.”[break][break]
“Huh.” Said the rider, stroking his heard. “Well, come on then, let’s not make Zaria angry.” A rough old hand slapped Howard on the shoulder, beckoning him forward. And, just like that, their fellowship of two became a trio.[break][break]
Zaria’s blade made their passage through the Slumbering Weald a trifling affair. Pokemon would rear up their heads, take one look at her sword, and go about their business. Navy wondered how they even understood the significance of the blade.[break][break]
They passed the time in silence, until they were near the edge of the Weald. After Zaria flicked another Wooloo away, without any prompting, she asked them a question.[break][break]
“Where are you two from?”[break][break]
“Hoenn.” Said Navy without hesitation.[break][break]
“Hoenn?” The knight asked. “Strange. It seems a familiar word, but I can’t fathom why.” Just ahead was the edge of the woods. Zaria kept up her stride as she followed up her first question.[break][break]
“Tell me about Hoenn.”
