Navy is no swordsman. To call himself such feels tantamount to stolen valor. Even in Galar, when the path of the blade was open to him, he chose a gun and threw away the sword. His hands grip Dragonslayer’s handle in desperation of the coming blows.[break][break]
His blade senses the plan. It pivots around with supernatural speed, almost dislocating Navy’s shoulder in the process. Men weren’t meant to swing something this large as fast as he does. He turns the blade as it flies, aiming to swat her with the flat of the blade. Even now, in crisis, with every cell in his body telling him to aim for a kill, he fights his nature.[break][break]
“Rocket ain’t found a way to kill me yet.” He growls as Dragonslayer illuminates, runes along its body glowing. A spotlight is cast from the sword, leading to a tree behind them. The sudden flash of light and his heightened aggression is enough to throw off her aim, he prays.[break][break]
How exhilarating he finds this contest. He understands at last why swordsmen raise their blades. This time between the seconds, knowing he could die at any moment, makes him feel alive.

Twin blades fly from opposite directions, come to deliver a checkmate. If the human dies, the whole team falls apart. Dragonslayer is a creature of steel, devoid of romance. Romance is a human idea, fancy notions like knighthood and kingship their invention. Only when graced by the light of tera crystals can he even comprehend such things.[break][break]
But he knows this: if the king falls, then it’s game over. His blade flicks forward, shield extended in the opposite direction. Most Aegislash forget when they were Doublades, when they had two eyes with which to see the world. They forget that their body is more than a blade. His king’s shield is absolute, using the sword to defend just as much as the round shield.[break][break]
“I know you’re in enemy territory. I know you’re alone.” His eyes squint at her, trying to think through a way to get out of this without killing her, when she wants to take things this far.[break][break]
“And I know I won’t fight you all out if you bait me with more innocent people next time.”[break][break]
He feels residual heat from Wukong’s fury. The monkey king is caught off guard by the flip turn, sent rolling back. Wukong wobbles, on the cusp of fainting. His face is split in a wide grin, the sort of thing only monkeys can manage.[break][break]
“Haha…ha…ha…” And he seizes Empoleon with both of his strong hands, still grinning. Even as darkness takes him, his raging fury spurs him to slam his fiery mane against Empoleon’s steel helm. Only when his head makes contact does he finally lose consciousness, slipping into oblivion.

“Don’t worry ‘bout me. I’ve got strong shoulders.” Navy’s hand reaches for a black orb. Contained within the crystalline slots is possibility. Even a simple Aegislash, ghost of a bygone age, can become a fae blade. As his Dragonslayer curves around to strike the swordswoman again, he angles a throw, chucks the ball out. Crystals consume Dragonslayer, conjured from nowhere.[break][break]
Inside the crystals is a fabled world, peaceful, ruled by a fairy king and his good, loyal knights. Dragonslayer sees himself as their sword, a modern Arondight, shining with the fabled light of a long lost lake. When he emerges, he streams pink light.[break][break]
His tera blast is less a cut and more a point black explosion, crying out against what seems to be a fated foe. Fairy light cuts against blazing flame. Over the sound of Dragonslayer’s cry, Wukong whoops, cheers, and rages. His raging fury claws against the Empoleon. His flames cut against the wave crash, harsh claws meeting fins as sharp as blades.[break][break]
“I’ll give ya this: people’ve got no sense of romance anymore.” He chooses to see the insult in its best possible light. “You’re crazy as hell, though.”[break][break]
While he speaks, another of his Pokemon slips out of a ball. Hattori does not mean to interfere. He’s too busy gathering up the bodies, hiding them away, and returning to civilization. Moments like these are why Navy brings him everywhere: the frog stays on task.

“My name?” She asked the question with genuine puzzlement. Her silence slowly evolved from stoic to uncomfortable. Clad in her helm, the knight’s expression was unreadable.[break][break]
“I suppose I am a knight.” She mused, more to herself than the two travelers. “My little brother cared more about titles than I did.”[break][break]
“I know how that goes.” Navy chose that moment to speak, a smile on his lips planted there by familiarity. “Kid brother, yeah?”[break][break]
“Just so.” She said. Afterwards, she fell silent once more. This silence was far shorter than the first.[break][break]
“My name is Zaria. I was knighted by High King ▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅,called by some the Fairy King.” Navy’s voice seemed to allow her to affirm her own identity, if only a little. “If you have any more questions about my past, I’m afraid I’ll have to disappoint. I don’t remember much.”[break][break]
“Let me take a guess. You woke up in the woods not too long ago?” She said nothing. Navy could all but see the shock under her helmet.[break][break]
“That’s what happened to us, too. Look. There’s safety in numbers. We’re not much good without weapons or Pokemon, but I’ll watch your back until we get to Postwick.”[break][break]
“Unarmed?”[break][break]
“I don’t talk about this much, but I was a boxer when I was younger.” His smile suggested some private joke. “Don’t tell my kid brother if you ever meet him. He thought I was a fry cook.”[break][break]
“A fry cook?”[break][break]
“It’s not important. Look. Thank you for saving us. We’re being rude. You gave us your name and we haven’t given you ours. I’m Navy.”[break][break]
He looked to Howard, wondering if his fated foe and fast friend was going to offer his name, or some insight on the information given to them by the helmed knight Zaria.

At times like these, Navy doesn’t know what to say. What can he say to a grieving husband, one who pledged his best and worst days to his fallen friend? What riveting speech can move the dead?[break][break]
No, this calls for action. Navy does the only thing he can think of. Moving to Noah’s side, he hugs his best friend’s husband. It is cold comfort, but he prays it tells Noah that he’s not alone. Though he is no Kyle, perhaps together, they can shoulder the burden of carrying on his absence..[break][break]
“I’m sorry, man.” He says, not bothering to hide his own tears anymore. “I’m real sorry.”[break][break]

Their tale threatened to end in obscurity, murdered in the womb before it could truly be told. His squire’s suggestion was met with compliance. Navy dipped, dodged, but found that his body was protesting with all its might. All the exercise and rolling warrior muscles in the world couldn’t help him outpace his old age.[break][break]
When he fell after the second dodge, he found it much harder to rise. Air protested its entrance into his lungs, which burned like Gwyar Wledig’s forge. Their foe was already walking upright, bleating its protest. All that saved them was one fact: the Wooloo simply could not decide which of them it was going to attack first.[break][break]
Its moment of hesitation beckoned pain.[break][break]

“People?” A high voice muffled by a horned helm asked as she swung the flat of a sacred sword. It struck the Wooloo with all the ferocity of a hurricane, sending it flying back into the woods.[break][break]

“All we can do’s try to make the best of life during wartime, with a bunch of gods and demigods walking the earth.” He sounds reserved, praying that better people will come up with a true solution to their predicament. Somehow, he doesn’t think that’s going to happen. Events will spiral, cycling down and down and down until they’ve reached bedrock and there’s nowhere left to go. He wonders what will happen when they reach that point, what pressure cooker event will finally set this region ablaze.[break][break]
I just know those Dark Triad guys will be watching. A grimace accompanies the thought. Watching. Pointing. Laughing. Hoping Mckenna, me, and everyone we know dies.[break][break]
Genocide on the scale they desire is something almost incomprehensible to a mind like Navy’s. Lucky for him, he doesn’t have to dwell on it for long. Something’s coming for them – something big, mean, a paradox that resembles a Hydreigon.[break][break]
Navy rouses himself, standing up and looking at the creature without fear. If he shows fear to any creature that lives within these depths, be it futuristic machine or ancient beast, they will press their advantage. Instead, his hand shoots to his hip in a gunslinger’s draw.[break][break]
“Stay behind me.” He warns her. “I’ve got this.” With a clean throw, he releases his Aegislash. Dragonslayer becomes a mainstay of his team more and more. Aegislash are rare. In ancient times, it was said that earning one’s loyalty marked one as fit to rule. Navy doesn’t know the truth of that legend, nor does he think he’s any sort of king. All he knows is that Dragonslayer’s king’s shield protects them from a blast of mechanized energy.[break][break]
A second pokemon lurks in the machine’s shadow, sneaking up and stabbing it in the back with a shadowy kunai. One blow is not enough to take down a Pokemon of this caliber, but it’s enough to buy Madd time.

“It’s Shuwen.” Navy says, which serves well enough to explain everything. On most days, while Navy busies himself helping bring Pokemon HOME to fruition, Shuwen is left in charge of protecting Granite Cave. His fighting bear is relentless in his pursuit of Rockets and Nihilegos alike. Although he took quite the beating during their stint in prison, the bear refuses to let someone else do the work.[break][break]
When his Urshifu acts like this, Navy becomes convinced all over again that the bear really was born from his fighting spirit in interdream mist. Given how random the bear’s insertion into his life was, it serves well enough for an explanation.[break][break]
Navy himself hobbles along on a cane. When forced to make the press circuit or train with the troops, he hides his limp with his sygna suit. When his soul melds with Arthur or Vortigern’s, he finds he can ignore the pain. He has not, as of yet, found occasion to put this to any sort of test in actual combat. Navy considers himself a sensible man, who follows sensible orders. Commissioner Goode has ordered him to stay put, so he stays put.[break][break]

“I’unno, k-” He stops himself just shy of saying kid. It’s a lucky save, just before the first syllable rolls off his tongue all the way. It course corrects into “Ettie.” A small pause, as his eyes fall upon the dragon and dog full of bluster before one another. They seem to be in some sort of contest to establish dominance.[break][break]
Given the gravity of what Ettie asked, Navy finds little time to dwell on it, but it finds the notion that a mere Stoutland could rouse this sort of reaction from a dragon impressive. Filing that mental note away for later, he looks across the field, trying to reassure Ettie where the hero dogs are concerned.[break][break]
“They’re fine. They have to be, after the price we all paid. They’ll be back when it matters, when things look dark.” He remembers a legend he heard about that, about a crowned king returning to save the world. No street tough from Slateport would ever be part of such a legend, but he has faith that those wolves will do right by Hoenn.[break][break]
“I think…this is their region now, too.” His eyes fall upon a small carved statuette of Zacian, placed on the edge of his platform. Once upon a long, long time ago, his daughter carved it for him in admiration of the hero.[break][break]
“But we’ll talk ‘bout stuff like that when the fight’s over!” Smaug takes to the air in a macabre dragon dance, draconic energy gathering into himself. Pressed against the lights atop the high roof, he looks like a moon threatening to eclipse the sun.[break][break]
“I think they like each other.”

I try and tell you, but you just…” A long exhale follows, frustration fought down by a desperate desire to be an adult. “…it feels like it goes in one ear and out the other.” He wonders if that is a remnant of her mother’s influence, a woman who sounds more vile with every word Melody speaks concerning her.[break][break]
“But I’ll tell you again.” As if, this time, it will stick. “There were four kingdoms. They were all separated, blocked off by the poisoned fog. Calyrex gave me his steed, Spectrier. I named her Valkyrie. Valkyrie and me were the only two who could get through the mist. We fell in love about three years into things. I…kept travelling. I had to.” He still wonders if it was a mistake.[break][break]
“Duty kept us apart.” Only after he says the words does he realize how profoundly sad the words make him. “…I guess not much has changed, huh?” If he spoke them with heat, he imagines the words would hurt one of them, or both. Instead, with stormclouds gathering, they simply make him weary.[break][break]
“I’m sorry, Mel. For now, and then.”

His instincts flared. In them was nursed a primordial memory, baked into mankind’s genes. There was an era before Silph Co, before Pokeballs, before some craftsman in distant Johto first fashioned a device from apricots. In those days, even the simplest monster was a terror. Caution drove the rider to nod at his squire’s suggestion.[break][break]
“Slow.” He whispered. “Slow as that block of ice back home.” Navy took the lead, trying to step around the tall grass. Other creatures began to rustle along. Few of them showed much interest in the duo. Only the original Wooloo, its golden eyes alight with territorial fury, seemed a true threat.[break][break]
His boot snapped on a twig. Warrior’s eyes went as wide as saucers. The sound seemed loud as a gunshot in the quiet of the sleeping woods.[break][break]
“Fuck. Down!” He all but grabbed Howard, shoving the man down to his knees. Wooloo soared overhead, its head slamming into a tree. The headbutt split wood. It cracked. Old oak groaned as the tree started to fall.[break][break]
“Shit, shit.” He spoke without dignity, scrambling forward while the creature was distracted in the aftermath of the attack. The crashing tree drew every set of eyes in the area to them.[break][break]
“Book it.” Two words, whispered just before a sprint. Navy paced himself, wanting to make sure Howard was beside him. He would neither allow Howard to suffer the grisly fate of falling behind, nor allow him to be used as bait.

“I know.” He agreed even as he took the first long, heavy step on the road that would lead them back home. “For Hoenn.” And history would decide, long after they were both consigned to their rest, whether they were right or wrong.[break][break]
Their path through the forest followed a road. Thus far, nothing deigned to step out and bother them. Navy’s eyes narrowed. If this was the Galar he once knew, then there was little safety to be found outside of city walls. Here, in this blasted land, were monsters.[break][break]
“There’s some things you need to know.” He spoke as an old veteran, offering wisdom to a fresh-faced recruit. “We could be here a while. A long while. I always had a theory.” Navy was never a good detective. kyle lopez would say he wasn’t even an alright detective. Yet still, when faced with a nigh insurmountable problem and no immediate method to swing his fists, he would at least make an attempt to think it through.[break][break]
It was a fine distraction from the specter hanging in the back of the rider’s mind. A thought threatened to intrude upon his mind’s sanctuary, a whisper that she would be here.[break][break]
“If we die in the dream, we die in the waking world. No one died, the first go-around. The only reason I know that’s ‘cause of what I saw when Father Winter visited me. Be careful, and fight like your life depends on it.”[break][break]
He found it easy to say the words when they did not know the stakes. His mind accepted this sudden predicament the way a starving dog might accept a bone. Inside, he was at war with himself, a thousand emotions and theories tugging the core of the man in just as many directions.[break][break]
Only when the grass in front of them began to rustle did he fully rise from the reverie. Stopping in his tracks, he put a hand on Howard’s shoulder to stop him as well. What peered its head up from the grass was no terrible monster, but a mere Wooloo.[break][break]
“Back away. Slowly.” He cautioned Howard. Without a weapon or Pokemon, even a creature this small could prove a threat. It growled up at them, blocking the path ahead lest they ventured around it, into misty woods.

“Yes,” the rider said calmly, “you did.” He spoke with candor reserved for friends. Having done his part to help Howard up, Navy stood up and stroked his beard. “And you are not there to control him. Doubtless, it’s making its way to Dewford.” A prospect which filled him with dread. While they spoke, his people were contending with a redux of the ice age.[break][break]
“Hold a moment.” Howard’s words roused sudden insight into their predicament. Walking to the lake’s edge, he knelt and gazed at his own reflection in the still water. The man staring back at him was both absolute truth and a burning, impossible memory. It is not Navy he sees, but Lord Navidson, Pale Rider.[break][break]
“How…?” He started to ask, before stopping himself. “Ah.” After a moment of contemplation, Navy turned back to Howard. Returning to the raised platform, he looked down the misty road leading into the woods.[break][break]
“This was how I looked when gathered heroes cast Eternatus into Ultra Space alongside Zacian and the Black Knight.” Navy confessed. “With a little less gray in the beard. Oh, Howard.” He afforded his friend, Dewford’s own Judas, time to let the words sink in, stew in his brain.[break][break]
“If Arceus is real, He’s got a cruel sense of humor.”

His head hurt. It felt as if he had been sleeping for an eternity. His senses were slow to sharpen. First came the smells, springtime and promise and a faint odor of poison. Next was hearing. Birds chirped, water rolled across a pond. Hairs stood on end as he became acutely aware of the chill, both in the air and from the stone beneath his body.[break][break]
At last, he willed his eyes to open. It did not do much good. All around him was mist, slowly receding to reveal stone pillars and a raised platform. He tasted blood, and with that taste came a memory. He was to do battle, to fight a terrible foe with a newfound companion.[break][break]
Instead, he was here. He did not know where here was, but he was certainly here. Pushing himself to his feet, his gray eyes tried to get his bearings. Behind him sat a lake. Across the lake sat a small island, verdant grass unbroken by man or stone. By his eye, it looked as if something was missing from the island.[break][break]
I have to get back to Dewford. The rider thought. Arceus. Baki…Eddie…Noel…you guys are gonna need all the help you can get.[break][break]
Again, he turned, hoping to find the Pokemon that finally decided to step onto the stage with him. Instead, he found a man. He, too, was flat on the ground. Navy rushed to his side, taking to a knee.[break][break]
“Howard?” He asked, although his ~~foe~~ friend looked much older. “Are you alright?”
