There was no way that Bonnie was holding up to the power of that z-move. She’d weathered one earlier in the tourney and had come out on top, but the zeraora’s prior attack had already done a number on her. She was already staggering, trying to keep her footing so that she could gear up for her next move.[break][break]
But the cat was moving too fast—even for the TOXIC spray to slow his pace. Her effort had been too little too late. The mightyena struggled to track Raikiri’s movements as he sped up to little more than a golden blur on the field. It was a futile attempt. The electrified attack crashed into her and Bonnie crumpled like a stone falling heavy on the floor of the pitch.[break][break]
Blue whistled low at the intensity of the move as she raised a pokeball to recall her companion in a beam of light. “That was next level,” she muttered aloud, mostly to herself. Then she looked up at the gym leader with a short nod. “Good game.”

She’s maybe getting a little bit better at this. Blue still thinks she’s a far cry from a decent trainer—no matter how loyal her primary pokemon are, or how well they listen. The mightyena by her side included. But she’s learned more throughout the course of this tournament than she’d thought she would. She’s peeked out of her taciturn, isolated shell, becoming a little more settled under the constant weight of audience eyes. She’s figured out she could actually be sort of decent at this whole casual battling thing.[break][break]

That it’s sort of fun.[break][break]

Enough to feel a bit eager going into her next match. Not enough to remove the stiffly awkward and impassive expression from her face—she cannot manage perky, and probably won’t ever will. But her eyes are maybe a little bit brighter. She tries her hand at smiling over to her opponent again, and ducks her head in formal greeting. “Good luck.”

It proved much more fun for Bonnie to spar against the ninetails, it seemed, than it had with other opponent’s pokemon. Perhaps because the ninetails reminded her of the alolan vulpix that Blue kept at home–a gift courtesy of Shinra Moro. Though they used attacks, it seemed much more like excited play.[break][break]

The sight was enough to bring a wider smile to Blue’s otherwise impassive expression, and some of that excitement began to rub off on the trainer. The DRAGON HAMMER certainly caught the mightena off guard. The swing sent her skidding, but she popped back up quickly enough and she shook out her fur–violet crystals clinking together.[break][break]

Bonnie’s head tipped back with a short howl before she charged in on Tsukiko, paws out to batter at her with a SUCKER PUNCH.

A torrent of mud smacks into the mightyena’s face, and she yelps. Head shaking once more to dispel disgusting substances shot at her from the little pipsqueak of a wooper.[break][break]

The poison makes her sluggish, but Bonnie pushes through her heavy steps to pounce on the other pokemon and PLAY ROUGH with him.

The zeraora clearly didn’t take too kindly to Bonnie’s method of attack. Blue winced at the thundercat’s effort to heave her off of him was successful. The mightyena yelped as she rolled across the pitch before her claws dug into the ground and she skidded to a stop. Her legs wobbled as she pushed herself back up to all fours. It was a bit of a struggle, but she wasn’t quitting just yet.[break][break]

A growl, followed by a series of barks, were hurled at the feline before Bonnie sprang, paws thudding as she opened her maw to let a howl of TOXIC air spray out at her opponent. If anything, at least, to slow Raikiri down.

Blue felt a flicker of guilt when John called the match. Bonnie had latched on, a bit too hard it seemed. She whistled as the man waved his hands, and Bonnie backed away, ears flattening as he examined the crumpled wing.[break][break]
Bonnie crouched low, belly brushing the ground as her tail wagged. An apologetic whine rumbled in her throat as she watched the man healing up the scyther’s wing.[break][break]
When he regarded her, Blue was quick to shake her head, “No, it’s fine. Hope she didn’t hurt the wing too badly.” She grimaced, and then stepped over to where the mightyena sat up, her hand gently settling on the dog’s head in quiet reassurance. “Thanks, though. Good luck with the rest.”

“Woah.” Blue watched with wide eyes as the scyther began to spin in a whirl of chaotic movement, easily throwing the mightyena to the side. The collection of energy around the other opponent was inevitable—even Blue knew something powerful was coming.[break][break]
“Watch yourself!” she called out to Bonnie, though there was really no telling if there was truly any way for her to avoid the onslaught of the u coming z-move.[break][break]
The mightyena’s paws dug into the pitch, claws sinking in as she tried to root herself in place, but the attack pulled her feet out from under her regardless and she whipped around, spinning from the sheer force of the gale of violent wind.[break][break]
The Tera crystals coating her fur rattled as she crouched and tried to weather the rest of it—waiting until the wind seemed to die down before she rose unsteadily and dove in with CRUNCHING jaws at one of Kama’s wings.

The measures that Bonnie took to match the zeraora were impressive. Normally, the mightyena took a bit of a free for all approach, but perhaps it was a testament to the fact that Blue had been trying a bit more in her training that she was so controlled. She had never really considered herself an adept trainer so much as someone who was just out here trying to get by.[break][break]
But it sorta got her fired up a bit, didn’t it?[break][break]
Raikiri’s attack certainly threw off the mightyena and she overcompensated—barreling by. Unable to swing around fast enough, the FIRE PUNCH caught her square in the flank, flames singeing her fur as she snarled. Lashing out, Bonnie twisted, front paws swiping out with her full weight to smack at her opponent in her bid to PLAY ROUGH.

Blue watches as the salamence appears in a bright ray of light, and her eyes travel upward to its great, scaled head. Lips part, an expression of obvious awe washing over her features at the sheer grandiosity of the dragon. A low chuff from her mightyena brings her back into focus, and she blinks.[break][break]
For a brief moment, she had forgotten her anxieties at the sight.[break][break]
Bonnie, who had already been steadfastly glued to her side, steps forward—undaunted as she comes to crouch low in the shadow of the salamence. Her tail sweeps back and forth, lips peeling back to reveal sharp teeth.[break][break]
It is then that Blue activates the Tera orb in hand, and sets the canine on a crystallized trajectory toward poison terastalization. She lunges forward, a howl up at the salamence releasing a TOXIC spray.

The fact that the zeraora also pelted toward her at full speed did little to deter Bonnie. Though the quick attack knocked into her with rattling force as she bit down, the mightyena unclamped her jaw quickly and kept right on running past.[break][break]
She whirled around for a second run, much like a lancer on the back of a rapidash might circle back for a second sprint. Head down, she charged forward to barrel into Raikiri, full-tilt in the effort to TAKE DOWN the electric feline.

After kicking out at her opponent, Bonnie swerved back to what she was familiar with—namely, her chompers. Teeth bared, she moved to lunge in again.[break][break]
Only to be blown back by the scyther’s gusty attack. The mightyena rolled across the ground like a tumbleweed before dizzily jumping back to her feet.[break][break]
Then she was sprinting across the pitch, changing tack at the last moment to PLAY ROUGH with Kama, rather than bite down.

Was she being a little too terse? The way his face flushed with color would suggest as much. Blue sighed, face screwing up with a flicker of frustration at herself before she forced it to smooth out again. Then— there was an attempt at a smile.[break][break]
It was up to Caleb whether or not he thought it was a very good one.[break][break]
But she figured she should at least attempt to go easy on the poor guy. It wasn’t his fault she was socially stunted.[break][break]
She nodded in response to his answer—taking a sort of comfort from it. Almost a little kinship too. “Me too,” she admitted, eyes darting away, “I used to be in the underground brawling circuit.” She paused, “Wait, you’re not a cop…right?”[break][break]
Hope not.[break][break]
Equally as eager to get the show on the road, Bonnie let a howl volley up her throat before the jet of water blasted into her side. She tumbled, but sprang back up, shaking out her coat before lunging forward to slam into the lapras with a SUCKER PUNCH.

Blue has to wonder at how this girl will match up against her. In all likelihood—she’ll probably be far better at a spirited match than she herself is. She's never been formally trained, after all.[break][break]
But she’ll still do her best to provide some…fun? That’s what these are meant to be like, right?[break][break]
The wooper that pops free of its pokeball looks like a little squeaky toy next to her mightyena, but it’s kinda pretty cute. Bonnie’s head tilts to a sharp angle as she looks down at it.[break][break]
Only to stumble back with a yelp as it spits poisonous goop at her.[break][break]
She paws at her snout and shakes off the rest woozily, but darts forward after a beat with a snapping CRUNCH aimed at the lil guy.

It was a friendly enough greeting, and Blue nodded respectfully for his position though she wasn’t nearly so chipper. Her awkwardness kept her somewhat uptight as she motioned to her companion. “Nice to meet you, Josh. I’m Blue– this is Bonnie.” In her hand, a tera orb gleamed before she tapped it. A sparkling ray of light swallowed up the canine to encase her in poison tera crystals.[break][break]
Eyeing the zeraora, Bonnie was equally as prepared. Newly terastalized, the mightyena crouched as violet crystals embedded in her fur clinked together. Sharp teeth tinged with toxicity gleamed as the horn blared, and then she lunged forward– keeping herself low to the ground as she tried to sink POISON FANGS into the feline’s leg from the jump.
