If this doesn’t scream rockstar, I don’t know what does, she thinks, years of etiquette school rapped into her by the force of a thousand knuckle-bound yardsticks keeping her eyebrows politely lowered.

“I’ll have a whiskey. Neat, please,” she says, as she dislodges a discarded shirt from a barstool and slides into its place.

“If this was the afterparty, I’d love to see the show.” There is mirth in her voice and on her face as she colors her glance appreciative and gazes around the room.

They admit to being shy with the same energy as a child getting a tooth pulled out and Thalia can’t help but smile. “Clearly,” she says, not unkindly. Settling in to look out at the crowd around them, she lets her eyes drift. “It was very brave of you to come out on one of the busiest nights of the year, then.”

She spins her own drink and peers down into the miasma of syrup and booze. “Yeah, it’s too sweet for my tastes, too,” she confesses, then shrugs one shoulder.

Mirroring her new companion, she takes a drink. “Nice to meet you, Emerson. And, not originally. I’m from Evergrande. I’ve been away from Hoenn for some time.” Sweet, wonderful, blissfully short time. “Are you a native Hoennite?”

Shifting backwards, she plops on a rock. A Clauncher scurries from beneath it, and she pauses it by holding it with her boot long enough to fish out a Pokeball and drop it on the crustacean.

“They’re fairly common in the more remote areas of Paldea.”

She sighs into the wind, homesick for a land that was not her home.

“Seems like it. We were all wondering what Hoenn would do: roll over and take it like a good little whipping boy, or fight back. As much as you can fight back, of course, against a heavenly body.” She smiles behind her fingers.

says exactly what she’s thinking, though for entirely better reasons. Thalia wants the Corviknight to get closer to she can really see it-- really feel the thrill of staring into the jaws of the predator before turning the tide and ripping its throat out.

’s parabolic charge slows the thing, making its movements jerky and clanky. is holding its attentions.

“Bring it this way,” Thalia says, under her breath, willing the woman to read her mind, “draw it in…”

The massive beast, smoke rising off its metal plating, caws loud enough to shake the entire clockwork kingdom. The noise momentarily deafens the strange music that Thalia had forgotten existed-- like the hum of a television that you only notice when it is gone. Shaking her head, Thalia tries to forget it, as Galayne leads the avian closer.

She turns on her heels, boots clanking across the metal. “Bring it here,” she orders, and Jayce helps carry the weapon to the front of their little mouse hole.

“Light it up,” she instructs the Blaziken, taking position behind the arbalest to line up the shot.

The air fills with the scent of burning metal, warping with the heat. Thalia drops to one knee to prepare to fire.

The song fills her ears.

Thalia grins, flashing white in the burnished, hazy gloom. “Hang out with me more, you’ll get used to them.”

is in it, though, and Thalia resists the urge to giggle like a child at a slumber party. “Oh, yes, that’ll do nicely.”

The other-other redhead says that it’s reckless. Thalia is already searching their surroundings for a cord, chain, or spring-- there has to be something here-- but she’s in on the plan, too. “Perfect. Jayce, could you--, ah, here.” She finds a piece of slightly rusted piping and wrenches it off the wall, making a mental note to get her tetanus booster upon her return back to the regular world.

With help from her Tinkatuff, , and , Thalia quickly arranges the crossguard, which is hammered into place, and sections the wire off to a length that enables them to pull it tight.

, who might be the only one with a good head on her shoulders, mentions they should probably not be doing this out in the open.

“You’ve a point,” Thalia admits, and Jayce picks up the half-finished weapon. Thalia scans their environment for a place to briefly shore up. “Ah, there’s a nice little bolthole over there,” she says, pointing to a gap in the wall where two cranking gears don’t quite line up. She sets off across the metallic yard, boots clanking with each purposeful stride.

[attr="class","wownewmain"]She was drawn to adventure like a moth to open flame, occasionally with similar results. Littleroot torn open as a predator does a dying animal, its guts sundered and dragging bloody streaks in the dirt. Like a frozen wanderer seeking warmth, Thalia dove right in.

She was not alone. Perhaps this should have been a comfort. It was not much of anything.

“Such panic,” Thalia chided from above-- she stepped down neatly onto a spinning clock’s arm twice her size, descending to the level the other girls were on-- “we only just got here.”

The Corviknight’s blood-red eye eclipsed what little light filtered in through the brass walls. Thalia found herself grinning. “Exemplary.” She doesn’t know what it is, of course, but it is big-- and she recognizes the gaze of a hunter.

Sparks from out of nowhere strike the spherical eye and the beast shrieks and jerks back with an angry grinding of gears.

“Like rats in a trap,” she says, still grinning, forcing down a slightly deranged giggle. The others want to run, which is the decidedly more intelligent route.

Thalia calls Jayce forward into the space between. She strides to the wall and grips the still-ticking clock-arm.

“Pull this off for me.” The Tinkatuff complies, their combined strength able to wrench the metal piece down. Then she hoists it over her shoulder, opposite the giant hammer.

“Beautiful. A few more pieces and we’ll have a lovely arbalest.” She claps the rust from her gloved hands. “Where to, ladies?”

Callan selects a table for them and Thalia neatly takes her seat, arranging the gown artfully for proprieties sake, while still leaving little to the imagination.

Professional swashbuckler has her crinkling her nose in a smile.

“Ever so articulate,” she says, leaning an elbow on the table, cheek in hand. “It is lovely to meet you as well, Ms. Anderson.” She could see it in her, too-- the sheer blondeness, the sharp chin, the cheekbones. “Such a pleasure to encounter another young representative of an old family. Tell me, how’s council work been treating you?”

The Blacks and the Silphs and the Stones and the Andersons. Enough ancient blood to re-live fucking Game of Thrones.

“Yes, we can get food after.” Then she tsks, irritated. “I can’t believe you stay at home all day and do nothing but eat and you’re still a beanstalk. Life just isn’t fair.”

After they get far enough from the house, pushing away from the manicured Slateport upper class lawns and landscaping, she sets him down, wrapping a firm hand around his upper arm.

“Yes, yes, you hate the sun, you are the world’s biggest baby, blah, blah, blah. Live a little.”

She drags him deeper into the trees.

[attr="class","samjermain"]Sirius was wailing in the darkness, seemingly getting more and more desperate the further they got from home. As though there was an invisible tether between the brownstone and her brother, an umbilical cord of hermitage.

Her shoulder dug into his gut a little, and she didn’t shift him away from it.

“If I put you down are you going to bolt? I really don’t feel like running.”

She cut off the sidewalk and down an almost invisible path through manicured shrubbery, a decreasing slope down a little hill. To really see the stars they would need to get away from the light pollution-- a difficult task in this blight of a city.

The individual across from her struggled with their words like they were slippery, gripping their drink glass fit with white knuckles fit to shatter it. “You don’t look fine,” Thalia said, frank, with a twist of humor.

Elbow on the table, jaw in her palm, she smiled, hoping to disarm them. “No biting,” she parroted, entwined in a sigh, as though it was the most boring thing in the world.

Thalia would love to say she didn’t enjoy toying with people but that would be a lie.

“Your hair,” she said simply, twining a piece of hers around one finger. “We stick together.”

She does down one of hers in one go, her own nose wrinkling at the sweetness, a mirror image of their new ‘friend’.

“I can go if you want. But I can’t guarantee someone scarier isn’t going to steal this seat after me.” She pushes her empty glass to the side for a server to grab. “My name is Thalia. Yours?”

She was, of course, familiar with the Nautica name-- all the crews knew of each other, in some capacity-- but never had the chance to meet those behind it.

“They’re all one and the same,” she says, a lift of her chin and a knowing smile turned in ’s direction, “and those that try to act like it isn’t are either bad at it, or lying. Or both.”

Thalia also lived an exciting life, far away from these shores. Perhaps it should have disappointed her that such an active and established crew was already dredging up Hoenn’s tropical waters, but it didn’t. It excited her, instead. She loved conflict, and the act of carving out a Dawnhunter shaped space in Hoenn’s treasure market would be a titular conflict, indeed.

More people gather around the exhibit in the time of their brief conversation-- including her man of the hour, .

“Me? Steal? Preposterous.” She covered her mouth in mock surprise, as though the mere suggestion was absurd, and the sarcasm drips from every syllable. His words lit through her, the fire of a challenge. “Besides, a lady never reveals her secrets, Mr. Young.”

She would, of course, just wait until most everyone was distracted-- which soon they would be, as the dinner bells were ringing.

“Don’t be a boor, Callan,” Thalia scolds good-naturedly, her attention turning to , “introduce me to your lovely friend. Let's find a table, shall we?”
