It wasn't hard to tell when Blue was losing her temper. She bristled up like one of her poochyena, barely suppressing the animal tantrum. Puffing up like she was trying to look bigger, fully aware that she was the most dangerous animal around. She was in all ways different from him in that. It was something he envied, yet also something he inexplicably admired and liked about her. Maybe more than he deemed safe to admit to.

Logical, that was the problem. It felt like a requirement he couldn't wriggle free from. In all things he required logic and structure and control and if he didn't have it, things got ugly. He knew when he was headed in that direction, that blooming disgust under his skin and the telltale shiver of nerves in his hands. When even contact with the air made him cringe with a want to curl up. Had it been a few years ago, in a different place and at a different time, things would have been different. Blue was the very antithesis of his beliefs, and it wouldn't have mattered to him if she had suffered or died in the name of those beliefs. Things were different, something changed.

"Because it matters!" He shouted, a harsh crack through the silent icelands. "I'm not who I'm supposed to be. I'm... I'm someone else. Maybe you should stay away from me." His voice was sharp, lashed out in a way that he wasn't overly familiar with, cutting off to a nearly inaudible mutter. He clenched his fist on the shaking in his hand. A brief pause, he forced himself to get his shit together. "You're right, it doesn't matter. I should go. I'm sorry."

It pained him not to spin around and start launching out questions. How she's been, where she's been, what's she been up to. Has she met anyone? That felt pathetic though and inappropriate. Their relationship had been strictly professional. Granted, a little confusing, especially after a particularly troubling game he didn't want to think too much about.

Of course, he was definitely not going to mention the near stalker-level creepiness he'd devolved to whenever he got close to where the fights were held, hoping to catch a glimpse of her in a ring somewhere. She never was there, not that he'd stuck around the whole match to see her or anything. He'd already stuck out like a sore thumb, so making a habit of checking in on places would put a target on him real quick.

There was something distinctly odd about her being there, in his space. It wasn't the safety of a public setting or a workplace, there was no excuse for either of them. She'd decided to step away, but now she was here again and he was wracking him mind for a reason. She'd called him an idiot that last time, probably didn't realize how right she was.

Blue flinched and the movement made a deep sting of regret cut through him. It made him want to retreat, back to the unfeeling place that he was more comfortable in. It was safer there, where he didn't care what or who was bothered by him. It wasn't his problem. Seeing Blue hurt by his words stung more than he cared to admit. His eyes slipped to the frigid ground below, a heavy sigh slipping free and freezing in the atmosphere. This was the type of place he was accustomed to.

All he could do at that prompted question was shrug, "If that was your choice to quit then that's fine, just don't say it was for my benefit because it wasn't." Maybe she did care like that, afraid of her choices affecting him. He knew what she did, but also knew there was more to it. It would take nothing for him to determine what that truly was, but his inaction proved his bias.

Somehow, she had intercepted his loyalty to his job, to his beloved justice. Ridiculous.

"Maybe, I don't know. You don't... exactly make logical sense." That was his problem more than her's, but it wasn't posed that way. She wasn't the problem because he couldn't understand that things didn't need to be logical. There was nothing logical about this... whatever this was.

Shinra huffed a laugh at the reply, feeling his lips curl into some unfamiliar and damningly authentic at such a Blue response. The fact she responded at all shouldn't have made him feel so much relief. He didn't deserve it, considering what an asshole he'd been. For a moment, he stirred at the pot of noodles and the meat cooking beside it, figuring she probably liked it spicy.

Good, get here before it gets cold then. Despite the warmth he felt, his actions uttered only cold promptness. At least, maybe that was how most people would consider it. He hoped that maybe she wouldn't take it with an edge of grudging. There was no telling, but he couldn't sit there and analyze his response to death, could he?

She was there surprisingly quick, but also in good timing. The timer had beeped at the same time the door thudded. "It's open," He yelled, turning off the burner and spooning noodles and spiced sauce together. It was admittedly more than convenience, it felt less direct than answering the door. It felt more like a gesture of 'come in, you're welcome here.' Or so he hoped it did.

Mostly, he was just a coward. Of course, it definitely wasn't prompted by that unusual game or the strange feeling of want and shame that felt unwelcome on his bones. "I hope you like spicy food."

He stared down at his phone for a moment in perplexed silence. Definitely longer than necessary, but he was waiting for it to follow swiftly with a “Psyche” or a ”haha as if, loser” or something. Nothing followed though, at least not immediately. It could still be that she was waiting for him to respond in order to humiliate him, but what would be the point in that? It was hardly Blue’s style. She didn’t mentally fuck with people, mostly just destroy people with her fists.

The tensions were unnecessarily high, Shinra knew. It shouldn’t have even mattered to him, in the slightest. He shouldn’t be at all bothered, and yet… Somehow, blue murtagh had gone and gotten under his skin. She found a place there like a barbed thorn and wasn’t letting go of him yet. The problem was that she was letting go and he wasn’t ready for that yet.

”Ah yes, please mount a flag at the top of moral high ground and kindly keep me the hell out of it. I don’t need any justification.” He was being too snappy, he should remove himself emotionally. With a deep exhale, he shook his head, ignoring an artibax that was seeking cover likely frightened away by their bickering. This wasn’t what he intended when he invited her out here.

His time was running out, but he didn't yet dare to glance down at his watch. Caleb didn't actually have to tell him anything, maybe it was ill-process not to explain that to him. Maybe he already knew and this information was given willingly. In all truth, the man didn't seem like a threat. He certainly didn't seem like the type that he was after. If anything, he knew the bigger fish was not far behind, lurking in the shadows waiting for blood in the water.

"I will find out, you know, regardless of you telling me or not." He had a habit for digging up things better left at rest. Maybe he'd end up in a bigger fight than he anticipated, but his life was volatile. If anything, he was simply looking for the reason. Under his skin, he was not quite so polite or civil. He was likely no better than the rocket that Caleb was trying to protect, but he had his precious justice.

Despite everything, he nodded and decided a different technique. There might very well be an opportunity here. "I see, okay then. No further questioning, for now." He paused briefly, "I respect you rangers quite a big deal, you do far more for the league than your reputations permit. While I understand your reasons for protecting this person, I believe them misguided. One day, you'll realize that. Hopefully not too late, but should you be interested, there is a place for you with that kind of intel." He'd leave it at that, shrugging idly. His smile was the same fox-like emptiness. Almost taunting. "I'll keep in touch."

Kimiko attacked a wandering glalie with earth power and he focused his efforts on catching it. It was an unfair distraction, he shouldn't be mad. This had nothing to do with him, really. Or at least, he hoped it didn't. And yet, part of him greedily wanted that involvement. Why? He shook his head. Blue involved him regardless, saying it was for him. Yeah right.

"Well believe it or not, I'm a grown man and I can make decisions on my own." He didn't deny that he was doing those things. He also didn't call it a bad decision. It wasn't. He didn't regret covering Blue's shady practices. A few weeks ago though, this effort would have been maddening. Shinra from a few weeks ago wouldn't have done this.

Part of him didn't trust that answer, which was a problem. If it really was just freelance work, it wouldn't have mattered. She could make her own decisions too. "Okay well... good luck then?" He wanted to say something barbed like good luck and good riddance, because that was what this was, right? A goodbye.

His eyes slip away from hers at that moment, a slight huff of amusement. "Trust me, you'd in good company." Perhaps they were both miserably bad at this. Whatever this was supposed to be. He was too afraid to even admit the possibility of what it was. That was okay though, there was no likelihood of it leading to anything.

He smiled, despite himself, even if it was crooked and uncertain. It wasn't the leering tease of his usual smile. It felt small and derisive but only for himself. He'd never heard that before. It was always him. He was the problem. "No, believe me, it's not you." He sighed.

"I don't know just that... I like all your bristles and bad manners... don't ask me why, but I figure sometimes it's nice not to change, so maybe you should quit trying. Or whatever. I'm feeling incoherent." He shrugged, frowning a little. As if he knew the meaning of self-love. They both obviously needed to figure themselves out first, that never made a good combination. Reluctantly, he stood up. "Anyways, I should go. Try not to get yourself killed while I'm gone." That time the smile he flashed as he turned away was his usual, teasing and vulpine.

Blue shied away from him as his hand wandered, just a simple act that even he barely processed. It brought him back to himself, just enough sobriety to feel guilty for such boldness. It didn't seem right. No one as strong as Blue should ever wince like that. It made him want to destroy the people that made her that way, but there was a miserable hope that made she was like him and no one did. "Because you're still capable of so much and I'm not." He shrugged, it really felt that simple to him. "But you're so angry that you can't let go." She hated herself too much to change. Anger was a powerful emotion though.

Every minute he spent there was another minute he could not justify his reasoning. It slipped right through his fingers and yet the time didn't feel wasted. It was odd. Blue was odd. Not so much for the rough-hewn rebellious beast that she was but for the responses she seemed to encourage in him. What was he supposed to do with her? The simplest would be to write up a report that she was both emotionally and ethically compromised. Regardless of her involvement with Rocket, which he couldn't yet determine, he had enough evidence to put her off the force. And yet...

That didn't erase the fact he found her intriguing and that he hadn't reported anything beyond that he needed further observation. He didn't, he could read her like an open book and she made no effort to hide herself. She didn't know anything about being invisible truly. To him, she was radiant and sporadic and loud. Unfortunately, not in a bad way either.

"I dunno, suppose there lies the difference. I wouldn't know the point in fighting, but I think you're addicted to burning out." He shrugged, that didn't mean anything in reality. They both knew it. None of these were new observations.
