His eyes slip away from hers at that moment, a slight huff of amusement. "Trust me, you'd in good company." Perhaps they were both miserably bad at this. Whatever this was supposed to be. He was too afraid to even admit the possibility of what it was. That was okay though, there was no likelihood of it leading to anything.

He smiled, despite himself, even if it was crooked and uncertain. It wasn't the leering tease of his usual smile. It felt small and derisive but only for himself. He'd never heard that before. It was always him. He was the problem. "No, believe me, it's not you." He sighed.

"I don't know just that... I like all your bristles and bad manners... don't ask me why, but I figure sometimes it's nice not to change, so maybe you should quit trying. Or whatever. I'm feeling incoherent." He shrugged, frowning a little. As if he knew the meaning of self-love. They both obviously needed to figure themselves out first, that never made a good combination. Reluctantly, he stood up. "Anyways, I should go. Try not to get yourself killed while I'm gone." That time the smile he flashed as he turned away was his usual, teasing and vulpine.

Blue shied away from him as his hand wandered, just a simple act that even he barely processed. It brought him back to himself, just enough sobriety to feel guilty for such boldness. It didn't seem right. No one as strong as Blue should ever wince like that. It made him want to destroy the people that made her that way, but there was a miserable hope that made she was like him and no one did. Maybe she just couldn't handle the contact because of the things she did not feel, but he doubted it.

They were not alike in that, but there was just enough similarity to make a hollow, raw ache form in his chest at that flinch. This kind of feeling was what he craved though, wasn't it? He wondered if maybe this is the closest he'd ever gotten, but why? What made her any different?

"I'm sorry," He shook his head, retracting back to himself until no fear of that could happen again. Just because he'd had a few drinks didn't mean he could just do that.

"Because you're still capable of so much and I'm not." He shrugged, it really felt that simple to him. "But you're so angry that you can't let go." She hated herself too much to change. Anger was a powerful emotion though.

Every minute he spent there was another minute he could not justify his reasoning. It slipped right through his fingers and yet the time didn't feel wasted. It was odd. Blue was odd. Not so much for the rough-hewn rebellious beast that she was but for the responses she seemed to encourage in him. What was he supposed to do with her? The simplest would be to write up a report that she was both emotionally and ethically compromised. Regardless of her involvement with Rocket, which he couldn't yet determine, he had enough evidence to put her off the force. And yet...

That didn't erase the fact he found her intriguing and that he hadn't reported anything beyond that he needed further observation. He didn't, he could read her like an open book and she made no effort to hide herself. She didn't know anything about being invisible truly. To him, she was radiant and sporadic and loud. Unfortunately, not in a bad way either.

"I dunno, suppose there lies the difference. I wouldn't know the point in fighting, but I think you're addicted to burning out." He shrugged, that didn't mean anything in reality. They both knew it. None of these were new observations.

Granted, he didn't seek to be fixed anymore either, but he'd tried in the past to feel something differently. It burned him.

Wrong. He wanted to retract his question, the surprise in his voice. It wasn't right, it betrayed far too much of himself and he didn't know what to do with that question or the look in her eyes in response. Something about this felt too personal, which wasn't something he knew how to handle. It was easier to focus on the awkward amble of a Bergmite, quickly tossing out a pokeball to catch. Anything that might take his mind away from his misstep.

"So you're doing it for my ease?" He snorted, shaking his head. It wasn't any of his business that she wanted to leave, but he did have to wonder what the point of it was. Knowing Blue, he doubted it had anything to do with him. It smelled like a bullshit excuse.

Her leaving didn't matter to him, not even a little bit. It was less work, he didn't have to worry over his job being disrupted anymore. No more distractions, even if he'd grown to almost enjoy it, a little bit. If this was her attempt to get rid of him, then so be it. He wouldn't be responsible for him and, in the end, it wouldn't look bad on him.

Blue swung between reactions in a way that was hard to predict, which he liked. It was easy for Shinra to assume a conversation. He could make it through an entire dialogue having predicted where it'd go. Though, then again, most dialogues with him were straight-faced and, admittedly, boring. He invited work talk and boring euphemisms about books or tea or chess. Challenges that went nowhere and conversations without substance. But Blue... well she challenged him in a real sorta way.

It was easier for him to focus on the task, as he spied the Arctozolt, which was... peculiar to say the least. Not in a way he disliked. Releasing his cursola, Kimiko lashed out at the arctozolt with ancient power and he threw a pokeball.

Yet his attention wasn't steeled for long, he looked back at her with a somewhat startled expression. Well, he'd not been expecting that... Maybe he should've been though. She was put under a lot of pressure and he couldn't entirely blame her for that. "But... why?" That response was also not what he planned to say. It was a little surprising for him. He should've been entirely unbothered. After all, it was clear that she wasn't actually interested in police work. It was almost entirely likely she was working for Rocket and he should be glad she was out of the police force, but he felt strangely wrong about it.

What did that mean, exactly? There was nothing but work. That was the basis of their "relationship" after all, he was studying her because it was his job to do so. However, he wasn't there to study her right then and this find would likely never make it into her files. Why? Well... he didn't really have an answer to that yet.

His eye followed her movement, the subtle nihilism in it. How easily it would be for her to end her life just stepping into traffic. How easy it would be for him to allow it, or not. The choice didn't feel powerful, he didn't like feeling impotent either. She was strange, wasn't she? Why did he enjoy that about her?

In equal opportunity, if she willed it, she could choose to kill him. They were in her world now, not his. He could be silenced quite easily and no one would bat an eye over the death of interpol scum. "Who says I'm not?" Once upon a time, he had been. Despite how much he stood out in a crowd, he'd always been quiet both in self and form. No one noticed him before. It was only different now because he noticed her. "In my experience, no. It changes nothing."

The expression that followed his response was conflicting. Clearly, he'd said the wrong thing, but that was far from an extraordinary event for him. He was prone to these stupid mistakes. After all, how could he possibly hope to empathize with humanity when he always felt so far removed? Yet, he'd always accepted that. For some reason, beyond his comprehension, he wanted to understand Blue on a different level.

And not even in an attempt to study her like a lab rat. How odd. He could barely understand it, but it felt deeper than his need as a psychiatrist. It made him feel unpracticed and out of control, falling without knowing how far the rabbit hole went. I know you, his eyebrows shot up at that. Immediately, a snort slipped free, shaking his head. "Sadly, I doubt that." How could she know him when he barely knew himself?

Apparently, however, she did know a part of him. She did her research. Some people might have been enraged by this, like it was an invasion of privacy. Shinra, however, felt only his curiosity perk up. How much did she know? What he expected then was for her to pilfer through his life, remark on it with an edge of superiority for having found him. For having exposed him. It wouldn't be the first time and it would prove ineffective, to Shinra that was no more than setting up a chess game and inviting him to destroy his mental opponent. That wasn't what he got though. Far from it, this he was not expected and he felt himself go quiet from it.

She understood him, she claimed.

His first instinct was to remove himself from the situation, even if it meant defeat. But this wasn't a game, he had to remind himself. He processed it slow. She wanted so bad to be picked, to be something to someone. He could fathom that and yet. Without thinking, his hand had drifted forward, brushing a long tangled bang behind her ear. It was only in the act, did he recall that he was gloveless, he pulled away but the eye contact remained. "Trust me, we are not alike."

His fingers moved back to the cold exterior of the glass, anything to remove that hint of heat that clung to his finger tips when they barely brushed her skin. The shiver was there, familiar in its distaste. A reminder not even to bother. You do not belong in this equation, so give it up.

“What sort of secrets are you tryin’ to worm out of me now?” He paused at that and frowned, it was an awkward stumble of mental motion. Of course, he was jarred more because the alcohol had made him clumsy. Under normal circumstances, he might have followed this up with something witty, whatever you will feed me. Because that was the truth, in an obscene way, he felt hungry to know. Yet experience had long since taught him that his hunger wasn't something that could be fed. It was pointless, it never filled up the vacancy there. It only left him feeling more empty.

Not to mention, he asked an awful lot of questions, didn't he? That was who he was and also his job. He asked questions, they sometimes answered, and then he evaluated. The same kind of pointless consumption that resulted in further emptiness. "Mmm... none, in fact. I think I've asked you enough questions, haven't I?" He laughed, realized he'd just asked her another question in the form of an opinion. Another problem of his, his opinions didn't matter so much as the factual conclusion that his analysis concluded. People were no more than arithmetic. "I think it's probably time to return the favor so... if you have questions? I'll do my best to answer."

"The truth is what you make of it," He shrugged at that, knowing his lie could be convincing if she willed it to be. She was probably used to harming herself on other's words as well as her own. "Honesty is a saintly quality and as much as you try to lie, you are pretty bad at it."

Blue released him and he readied himself for the shiver that followed, the threat of contact that so haunted him. And yet... he paused briefly, a touch caught off guard by the absence of revulsion. Maybe it was the looming feeling of grunge that seeped from the seedy walls of this place, she felt like an exception because it was better that than anyone else. Still, she was rather gross, wasn't she?

"For work, yes... I suppose you have." Bit forward, wasn't it? To suggest this wasn't about work, when he'd used that to justify his being there. Everything was supposed to be about work. That was how he operated. He didn't have time for anything else. If this wasn't about work, then what was it really about? When he swallowed, his throat felt raw.

She likely thought he didn't fit here, but little did she know, he didn't fit anywhere. Regardless of where he went, it felt foreign. Maybe he envied her, looking so at home and comfortable in her skin while in the ring, pulverized until she was black and blue. How it might feel to belong in your own skin, that wasn't something he'd ever really know, was it? "But why? How does that benefit you?" "Needed to talk to me, huh?" He couldn't help the smile that slipped across his face, a little smug. Not quite the same vulpine cleverness as his usual, but more so something intrigued and teasing. It felt strange between them for reasons he couldn't fathom. There was no reason for him to be there with her. He wasn't there to study her or to arrest her, so why was he there? Why did he feel that, in a strange way, he benefited from her company. It was absurd. "Color me intrigued."

He was so distracted that the passing of an idle pokemon went unnoticed by him. Onna seemed to handle the wild creatures without his concern. Maybe he shouldn't have been so intrigued by what Blue had to say to him, but he was. Even more so, there was the slightest ounce of fear. In what? Hell if he knew... well, maybe he did. There was the slightest fear that she'd tell him to stop, to never communicate to her again. It wouldn't be unwarranted. She had all the right to detest him and hate the very ground he walked on, but the possibility shouldn't have hurt as much as it did. Anxiety, what a strange thing to recognize in himself.

He was no longer ideal for this job. At least, not the job that require sympathizing to create a bond. He didn't think himself empathetic in the least, definitely not after the years. At one time, he'd might have wanted to become a therapist and help people, but that desire had sharpened into something colder and crueler.

In all likelihood, he could never come to understand her experience, only judge it, which was exactly what he was doing. It wasn't so much finding out the truth as it was creating a predetermined answer that fit the narrative he liked most. Usually, he was satisfied with this and felt himself at least accurate. He knew most people better than they knew themselves. Yet, with Blue, the thought brought dissatisfaction and he didn't exactly know why. She hardly mattered in the grand scheme of things.

He laughed at that, knowing he'd done no more than affirm her already preconceived ideas. He didn't know this friend of hers so could hardly state for certain if this was truly the case. "I could, but I see that it would mean very little besides the opinion you have of yourself." He tilted his head. "You're very cruel to yourself, you know that?"

"You did." Once again, he assessed the diner. "Well, I can see we won't get very far here, so I'm going to go now. Understand, you're not off the hook. I'll be giving my assessment to your captain." What was in that assessment? Dismally little. Maybe he wouldn't hand it in, maybe he'd request more time with her. That would prove interesting.
