The vision that filled Yumi's mind bathed her in pale light. The subtle aroma of blooming chrysanthemums filled her nose. She stared at herself in a floor-length mirror; her reflection beamed back, lips painted red, cheeks glowing with a youthful blush.[break][break]

A white dress covered her from neck to heel, while glittering diamonds and gleaming pearls adorned her hair, ears, and hands.[break][break]

In the mirror, she saw the door behind her open. A man wearing a dashing tuxedo appeared on the threshold. His face was turned away from her, however, as he spoke with someone out of sight.[break][break]

The vision ended as quickly as it happened. Yumi blinked slowly, too stunned to be angry. Hitoshi's familiar voice grounded her, though, and she turned to him, confusion written all over her face.[break][break]

All around them, the simulation had ended, leaving them alone in a white-walled room with a single exit.[break][break]

"I don't know either," she admitted, her voice softer than normal. Then she cleared her throat and said in a more normal tone, "Let's go. I'm sure the higher ups want us to report on what we saw."

Despite the other woman's skittish demeanor, Yumi had to admit: she knew how to command her Pokémon. The Wishiwashi schooled together and made quick work of the Mareanie, scattering them before they could reach the Corsola.[break][break]

However, the Toxapex remained, and it was inching closer to its prey. Yumi watched it for a moment, then released a Pokémon into the ocean. "Suishou, scare off that Toxapex for us, please."[break][break]

The agile form of her Sceptile pierced through the water. He cut into the Toxapex with NIGHT SLASH. The Brutal Star Pokémon flared its limbs and struck back with POISON STING, but the Sceptile retaliated with a GIGA DRAIN.[break][break]

Frustrated, the Toxapex retreated after its young. Soon, the waters grew calm again, and the Corsola — momentarily frightened by the commotion — resumed their activities.[break][break]

Yumi glanced over at the woman astride her Corviknight. "What did you say your name was, again?" she asked.

She stood in the office of her grandfather, in the beautiful manor she once called home. She stood straight-backed and dry-eyed as the man she thought loved her, instead scolded her and denounced her.[break][break]

Who told her, in so many words, she'd amount to nothing without her family's wealth and power.[break][break]

"We'll see about that," were the words Yumi wished she'd said.[break][break]

The vision ended abruptly, snapping her back to reality. She swayed, disoriented, but steadied herself atop the edge of that false cliff. A cool breeze blew against her cheeks, grounding her.[break][break]

Parker's swiftness to collect the fallen scientist did not escape Yumi's notice. Dark eyes regarded the pair with some curiosity, but no jealousy. No, Parker's action reminded Yumi of a dog protecting its master.[break][break]

"I'm fine. Is she okay?" she asked, tilting her head toward Nomi.[break][break]

Hitoshi's vicious attack of the coin-tossing man jerked Yumi out of her daze. Her gaze lingered on the viscera for a moment before snapping up to the expressions of slack-jawed horror on the people around them.[break][break]

"Put me down," Yumi said, her tone firm but not harsh. Regardless of her bodyguard's cooperation, she managed to regain her footing.[break][break]

She had no desire to argue with his suggestion, but she was going to flee the crime scene on her own two feet. It made her feel more responsible.[break][break]

"I agree, let's leave."[break][break]

Together, they fled down the alleyway, just as the simulation crumbled away and replaced itself with a different scenario.

The look that crossed Parker's face made it seem like she'd swallowed venom. Yumi stared back, uncowed, until the pink-haired woman stalked away to Nomi's side.[break][break]

From a distance, Yumi watched as the Head Scientist watered the tree. The Pokémon statues sprang to life, suggesting that they hadn't been statues at all, but that living Pokémon had been petrified into stone.[break][break]

The thought caused a shudder to ripple through Yumi. She was glad neither of the other two women were paying her attention.[break][break]

Around them, the scene melted away as the simulation conjured up a new scenario.

A seafood dinner sounded luxurious, especially considedring Nikkari's selections. Yumi made no objections to the order. In fact, she nodded in understanding of his explanation.[break][break]

Besides, she would be a horrible hostess to argue the choices of a VIP guest who had just dropped eleven thousand pokedollars on a bottle of champagne.[break][break]

Leaning forward, Yumi rested her elbows on the table and laced her fingers together beneath her chin. It was not the most elegant posture, but she hoped it conveyed interest in defiance of his unspoken apology.[break][break]

"You're fine," she said, tone light. "I'm always eager to learn, especially when the teacher is so obviously knowledgeable." She lowered her hands to the table. "But since you asked, my passion is actually tea."[break][break]

It was not a hobby she made obvious. Having a mother who procured only the best and rarest teas, however, had turned Yumi into something of a tea snob herself.[break][break]

"Sharing tea with my mother is one of the fondest memories I have of her." One of the only fond memories, in truth. "She taught me everything there is to know about it. Even though I've left home, I still make time for a cup in the afternoon, like we used to."[break][break]

Pausing, Yumi took a small sip of her champagne, if only to wet her tongue. She was not eager to drink too much before the meal.
