At first, Yumi did not recognize the voice that called out to her. Who was that, one of her followers on social media? Remembering to fix a pleasant smile on her face in case someone's phone camera was recording, she turned in the direction of the voice.[break][break]

Her gaze immediately fell upon the figure of none other than @girard, the proprietor of Fraser's Fine Goods. She recognized him only because of his impeccable taste in clothing, though he was dressed far more appropriately for an outdoor stroll than she was for her picnic.[break][break]

Her smile vanished. "You," was her only acknowledgement.[break][break]

Annoyance began to bubble up inside her as she recalled how nosy and handsy he had been, but he had conducted their transaction professionally. She bit back a frown, instead opting for a more neutral — even bored — expression.[break][break]

"Fraser, was it? Have you suckered anyone into paying an exorbitant amount for my earrings yet?" Idly, she picked delicate primrose petals from a finger sandwich, fallen from stems gathered into vases for her picnic.

Yumi had expected the offer of a loan to precede the offer to buy. Though she was not well versed with the business of pawn shops, she understood those were her options, and that one was ultimately far more lucrative for the pawnbroker than the other.[break][break]

People taking advantage over others — that was exactly how the world worked.[break][break]

She lowered her gaze to the earrings in their box, cradled delicately in the proprietor's hand. She remembered the sheer delight that had filled her when she'd opened the box to discover the earrings within. Her grandfather's smile had been proud the first time she'd worn them.[break][break]

But he was the same man who had refused to support her against her parents. Who had demanded that she simply submit to the politics that entrapped them.[break][break]

"I want to sell them," Yumi said decisively, her eyes flashing with defiance. Her tone brooked no argument. "I'll take the 40,000 now."

"Excellent," Yumi declared, relieved that their time outdoors had reached an end and she could return to civilization. She plucked the Poké Ball from his outstretched hand, shrunk it down to its smaller size, and tossed it into her bag. "I'll head back and drop these off."[break][break]

She did not care one bit whether Archer could make it back to Sootopolis on his own or not. He had made it out to this rural patch of land by himself, so surely he could get to wherever he needed to be without her help.[break][break]

Yumi released a different Pokémon, a small Natu. He perched on her shoulder and chirped a greeting. Her Stoutland promptly stepped closer to her, ready for the imminent transportation.[break][break]

"But first, selfies. Yochi, TELEPORT us to Oldale Town. The lighting there is way better than out here."[break][break]

Yochi the Natu chirped again, and in the blink of an eye, he, Kiba, and their mistress disappeared with the faint hiss of teleportation.

As Archer released his Corviknight and started off to search for more Minior alongside his Dusclops, Yumi turned to her Stoutland. "Come on, Kiba. We can't let them take all the glory. Use your nose to find more."[break][break]

With a determined bark, Kiba approached the space where the Minior had once lain, sniffing the ground to remember its scent. Then he dashed off in a random direction. Yumi walked — she wouldn't run unless her life truly depended on it — following the sounds of his barking until she encountered another softly glowing Minior, pastel blue this time.[break][break]

"I hate using my own Poké Balls," she muttered, fishing in her cross-body bag for a handful of minimized ones. Once they returned to the submarine, she'd be sure to demand replacements as compensation for her work.[break][break]

Before long, Yumi and Kiba found and collected three other fallen Minior. Satisfied with her results, she approached Archer to ask after his progress.[break][break]

"Well? How many did you find?"

The fact that Fern seemed wholly unimpressed with the drunken patrons reassured Yumi that he was the sort of person she did not mind being around. At that moment, both Rockets were batting around the poor stranger like two Skitty playing with yarn, and that was, honestly, more than a little delightful.[break][break]

"I think our friend here is a misogynistic little Spoink," Yumi commented, her tone suggesting boredom instead of offense. "Is that why you're all up in our other friend's face, huh? You prefer the company of boys when you think your wife's not looking?"[break][break]

By that point, the other party involved in the argument had already begun to slink away, seizing the opportunity to retreat without consequence. They disappeared among the casino's crowd while the recipient of Yumi's insults grew even redder in the face. She was convinced his head would explode, spewing brains all over his mortified wife.[break][break]

"I refuse to stay here and be disrespected by the likes of you," the perfectly coiffed woman hissed at Yumi and Fern as she grabbed her sputtering husband to drag him away. "You won't be getting our money again, just you see!"[break][break]

As soon as they were gone, the other patrons who'd been watching returned to their games. The dealer at the table leaned toward both Fern and Yumi to quietly reassure them that the offended couple had already lost tens of thousands of dollars to the casino. And addicts never went too long without seeking another fix.

Flattery rarely succeeded with a woman like Yumi, whose ego and sense of self worth rarely diminished regardless of circumstance. Still, her smile took on a saccharine edge at Enzo's compliment. In case she ended up using the footage later for her vlog, she'd want to show her getting along with The Nimbus' proprietor.[break][break]

Yumi noted his use of her online handle. So he has done his research, too, she mused as she affected a pause to consider his question. In truth, she already possessed the answer, having contemplated it after previous visits to his events.[break][break]

"Perfection is nice and all, but it lacks personality," the woman replied. "You have a gorgeous venue that's full of personality, but sample the menu at every high-end restaurant in Hoenn, and they'll serve you the same food and drinks served here."[break][break]

She paused for effect, and to take another sip of champagne.[break][break]

"Don't get me wrong, such a strategy is safe. Plenty of people are comfortable with 'safe', and you'll get plenty of revenue from them. But is that how you want The Nimbus to be known, Mr. de Luca? The 'safe' choice?"[break][break]

As for his comment about patron satisfaction and dallying, Yumi merely nodded. His answer was adequate — proper, even, considering thousands of anonymous viewers would judge him for it. She had no reason to doubt his answer.

Yumi rolled her eyes at the sheer idiocy. Were other grunts in Rocket this dumb? "It's a Pokémon, too. Look. It has a face."[break][break]

She pointed. Indeed, the Minior's little mouth trembled as it gave a weak sigh. It blinked huge, alien eyes at Yumi and Archer as the latter handed a Poké Ball to the former.[break][break]

The woman stepped toward the fallen Pokémon. She gently tossed the empty vessel so it bounced against the Minior's head, capturing it. As she picked up the still Poké Ball, she said to Archer, "There should be more than one of these around here. Go take a look, will you? We should bring back as many as we can."

Frankly, Yumi did not care for the men's answers. Whatever drunken garbage fell out of their mouths while they tried explaining the situation to Fern was not important enough. She let them insist on each other's villainy for a few minutes before cutting in.[break][break]

"Look, we're not couples therapists holding together your nasty sham of a marriage," she snapped, pausing to let the full impact of her insult sink in — though she doubted if they could truly appreciate it in their inebriated state. "If you're going to fight before you fuck, do it outside."[break][break]

"Excuse me?" one of the women shrieked, clearly sober enough to be both confused and offended.[break][break]

Her man grew livid, his face turning even redder than it already was, and glowered at Fern while pointing a shaking finger at Yumi.[break][break]

"Ishat how it's gonna be here? Lettin' yer staff insult me? Insult my marriage infronna my wife?" he demanded, his words slurring together horribly.[break][break]

Yumi only laughed.

Kiba sniffed curiously at the fallen Minior while Yumi thumbed through Internet searches for information on how to transport the Pokémon in question. She hadn't thought to do research beforehand; she'd been too busy trying to decide on her outfit for a late night countryside trip.[break][break]

"It says here that Miniors weigh a fuckton," she commented, "so the best thing to do would be to put it in a Poké Ball. In fact, if we don't do it soon after the core's been exposed," she pointed at the faintly glowing, pastel-colored Pokémon, "it will die."[break][break]

She stared at Archer for a second as the full weight of the words sunk in.[break][break]

"Did the bosses give you any spare Poké Balls?"

The two women really could not be any more different. A smirk tugged at the corner of Yumi's mouth at the thought. Parker was the spitting image of a person Yumi would hire to scare poor schmucks into coughing up payments; a part of her was more than willing to sit back and let her rougher counterpart handle the task at hand.[break][break]

But Yumi had to prove her own worth, too. Her parents assumed she would wither and die far from the teat. She wanted nothing more than to crush their preconceived notions under a stiletto heel.[break][break]

"The one and only," Yumi echoed, allowing the smirk to fully bloom across her face. Whatever friendliness it carried was underscored with a viciousness, like a viper's. She listened to Parker's summary of the situation, then pursed her lips in thought.[break][break]

"Why don't we play to both our strengths? A mix of sugar and spice?" Yumi suggested after a beat. "Depending on how he responds, we could always throw in more spice." She had no doubt that Parker could apply just the right physical pressure to get a man to cave.[break][break]

Yumi eyed the vendor in question, then started off toward him with a confident, assertive stride. Gesshoku slithered at her side, his eight-foot length parting the crowd with ease. Upon arriving at the stall, Yumi smiled at its owner with a sweetness dripping venom.[break][break]

"Good evening, Cal. It's Cal, isn't it?" When the man nodded in confirmation, Yumi glanced over at Parker, assuming the other woman had also walked over. "My friend and I have been meaning to have a quick chat with you. I'm sure you know why, right, Cal?"[break][break]

The smile widened.

Not accusing her of anything? Yumi knew better than that. All people sought a means of control over others, any kind of leverage they could use to gain the advantage. It is what her family taught her and displayed in practice time and time again.[break][break]

@girard was a pawnbroker — in other words, an opportunist. He found value in other people's trash and arranged deals for others, both legal and illicit. How was she supposed to believe his comment was 'mere observation' when, in fact, he was likely trying to figure out how to put this knowledge to his gain?[break][break]

"So what if I do?" Yumi replied with a haughty scoff and a toss of her hair. "So what if I am far from home? None of that is your business." She pointed imperiously at the earrings in his hand. "That is."

"Probably any moment. People get so emotional over the possibility of winning or losing that they'll do the dumbest shit," Yumi replied with a roll of her eyes — though she herself was prone to such emotional displays, if the conditions were right.[break][break]

She took a sip of her gin and tonic just as a group around one of the card tables erupted in roars of both joy and indignation. The table's dealer stood, unfazed, deck in hand, as two men and two women shouted drunken slurs at each other. So far, however, they seemed more bark than bite.[break][break]

Yumi raised an eyebrow at them and glanced sidelong at Fern. "See what I mean?"[break][break]

Just as she went to drain her cocktail, the sound of a chair clattering to the ground and glass shattering filled the air. She looked back at the card table causing the commotion and saw both of the men nearly at each other's throats, held back by their respective friends.[break][break]

After setting down her empty glass on the bar's counter, Yumi slid off the stool with all the gracefulness of an unhurried woman. Gesshoku gathered himself at her side, all eight feet of him coiled and ready to spring.[break][break]

"Shall we?" Yumi asked Fern, looking over her shoulder at them. The annoyance in her tone was obvious, as if offended that a patron would actually put her in a position to do work.

Yumi was no scientist either, but at least she had read the report their superiors had sent them. "Something like that," she replied, flipping her long, black hair over her shoulder. With a sigh of resignation, she trudged into the field, the beam of her phone's flashlight sliding to and fro ahead of her. Kiba padded by her side, his exceptional nose sniffing for the fallen Pokémon.[break][break]

"This is honestly ridiculous," the woman grumbled after a few minutes of searching. "I can think of a million ways I'd rather be spending my time."[break][break]

But Team Rocket was the most connected criminal organization in Hoenn. If she wanted to climb its ranks and network with members in power, she had to do these menial tasks. 'Prove herself', or something inane.[break][break]

Suddenly, the light of her flashlight landed on a strange sight: a portion of flattened grass, radiating outward from a central point. When she raised the light, she saw the phenomenon's source.[break][break]

A Minior, the pink pastel core of it glowing softly within a circle of its shell fragments.[break][break]

"Hey!" Yumi yelled at Archer from over her shoulder. "Over here!"

Yumi was a lot of things — bold, commanding, discerning, kind of a bitch — but she was not an outdoorsy person. First of all, clothing for the outdoors was never cute. Sure, some brands tried, but nothing suited her particular aesthetic. Second, spending any time in nature was exhausting. There wasn't even air conditioning.[break][break]

Yet Yumi had to admit, the outdoors had a certain charm. Her followers on social media reacted well to photos of her in nature, even if many of them were staged at urban parks. And that night, as she stood on a country road leading out of Oldale Town, she found herself entranced by the shining stars that she'd normally never be able to see in a city.[break][break]

"I wish I had a good setup to take photos of the sky," Yumi lamented to her Stoutland, who stood patiently beside her. "Ugh, whatever. We'll take a selfie later, Kiba. Somewhere with good lighting."[break][break]

The Stoutland uttered a low, quiet bark in agreement.[break][break]

As it happened, Yumi and her Pokémon were not on any stargazing trip; they'd been sent out into rural Hoenn to retrieve some fallen Minior. Team Rocket's scientists had identified the falling cluster and reported it to the admins, who had arranged for Yumi and another grunt named Archer Garrett to gather them for later sale on the Black Market. She glanced over her shoulder now to her companion just a few yards away.[break][break]

"Hey! Is this the right direction?" Yumi had her phone out with the GPS coordinates keyed into her map app. "I don't see anything but boring grass."

Extortion. How exciting! Yumi had not had a chance to exercise her viciousness much since arriving in Hoenn, especially in the first few months when she had focused on obtaining a steady income of her own. But now that she had a social media presence and a paycheck from The Nimbus, she could spend a little time frightening the poor and weak on Team Rocket's behalf.[break][break]

She selected her outfit with painstaking care, making sure to strike a balance between intimidating and elegant. Of course, she had to consider mobility as well. Dresses were completely out of the question for that particular job.[break][break]

Accompanied by her Seviper, Yumi arrived at the designated location in the Night Market to meet her partner for the night — a woman named parker jones. Yumi had received Parker's name and headshot via encrypted email earlier that day, the latter of which she now referenced as she held her phone up and looked around the busy street.[break][break]

Ah, there she was.[break][break]

With long, confident strides, Yumi reached the other woman's side. "Are you Parker?" she asked with a tone that indicated she already knew the answer.
