Yumi took a moment to weigh the options. "Let's go with the lilac. It will coordinate well with Itazura's fur color."[break][break]

Sitting back in the very basic, somewhat uncomfortable chair she found, she took out her phone and began scrolling through her social media, checking notifications and messages from fans. However, she regularly glanced over to watch the man work. He worked thoroughly and carefully, and was gentle with her Purrloin.[break][break]

Naturally, that wasn't something that should impress her. It was the bare minimum, and if a groomer couldn't meet it, they shouldn't even be in business.[break][break]

"Of course he's beautiful," Yumi said idly as she rejected a bunch of YouTube comments from her approval queue. "I hold all of my Pokémon to a high standard of beauty. I can't be seen with unhealthy, untidy creatures."[break][break]

She glanced over once more to see how far along the man was with the grooming.

"Let's go, then. The bar's over there."[break][break]

Without waiting for another word from Fern, Yumi made a beeline for the nearest bar, where she had previously obtained her gin and tonic. Gesshoku slithered at her side, the passage of his enormous, serpentine body causing the crowd of casino patrons to part for them. She seemed unfazed by her Pokémon's effect — no, she seemed to expect it.[break][break]

At the bar, Yumi slid onto a barstool and patted the one next to her, an indication Fern should also sit. She then hailed the bartender, an older man with a neatly trimmed salt-and-pepper beard.[break][break]

"Tell him what you're having," she said to Fern with a jerk of her head toward the bartender.[break][break]

While Fern ordered, Yumi sipped her drink and scanned the room. Rows of slot machines occupied half of the large chamber, nearly each one occupied by some poor soul feeding their gambling addiction. The other half of the room held card tables. Each dealer was a member of Team Rocket, instructed to rig the games to turn a profit for the crime syndicate.[break][break]

Yumi always considered gambling absurd, a destroyer of otherwise competent, intelligent people. But she could not deny it as a very steady and lucrative source of income, especially in a city as big and as isolated as Sootopolis.

A charity gala and silent auction were not exactly Yumi's favorite kinds of events, but she could not resist an opportunity to once again enjoy the lavish interior of her favorite hotel, The Nimbus. She had not been in Hoenn long, but she'd visited the hotel at least five times for one event or another. Each time, she'd vlogged her visit and posted several pictures to Instagram. She knew all of the ideal photoshoot locations, the secret spots for a quiet retreat, and always gushed about the high quality of the food and drinks served there.[break][break]

So there she was again, dressed in a floor-length gown of wine-colored satin. In one hand, she held a small tripod with a camera attached — an expensive hybrid boasting DSLR capabilities but the size and lightness of a point-and-shoot. She had even affixed an external microphone with a windscreen muff to it, even though she was indoors.[break][break]

Yumi was chatting animatedly into the lens when she caught Enzo's approach in the corner of her eye. Of course, she knew who she was; any social media content creator worth their salt thoroughly researched the places they featured on their channels. Though she had not anticipated meeting the owner of The Nimbus, neither was she surprised he sought her out. After all, why wouldn't wealthy and notable people wish to be in her presence?[break][break]

"Everything's amazing," Yumi replied honestly — which, admittedly, was always. She accepted the champagne flute he offered and took a sip. "Perfection, really. Which makes it feel a little plastic, you know?"[break][break]

A vicious grin slashed across her immaculately made up face. The camera kept rolling.[break][break]

"Not fond of these stuffy affairs, are you, Mr. de Luca?"

When the man took her wrist in his hand, Yumi almost wrenched it right back out. How dare he, a total stranger, touch her? But he was too fast, taking the box of earrings and letting go of her wrist before she could withdraw. The heat of his fingers against her skin lingered, uncomfortable and vexing.[break][break]

As the man examined the earrings more closely, Yumi turned away, taking in the shop's interior with its shelves chock full of random knick knacks. Yet, shockingly, the way everything was arranged exuded a sense of order, giving her the impression that the proprietor knew exactly where everything was. No space looked or felt cramped, and upon closer inspection of the nearest shelf, Yumi could not find a single speck of dust.[break][break]

Despite his unwanted invasion of her personal space, which had knocked him down several pegs on her personal opinion scale, she could not help but feel a begrudging admiration for the condition in which he kept his store.[break][break]

His sudden use of her surname snapped Yumi out of her thoughts. She whirled to face him, her arms crossed over her chest — a protective, defensive posture.[break][break]

"How do you know who I am?" she demanded, immediately wary. Then she comprehended the rest of his comment and its implications: he knew information about her family. Where they lived, at the very least. "Why the fuck do you care?"

The man's forced cheerfulness was not lost on Yumi, but she ignored it, having witnessed the attitude so many times among service industry workers. Frankly, she despised such behavior. Fakeness was something she absolutely could not tolerate.[break][break]

But first, she followed the man into the back area with its various equipment for bathing and grooming Pokémon. Itazura purred in her arms. The Purrloin would not fuss; he knew his mistress' high standards for appearance, and that included being clean and smelling good. He would calmly and patiently go through the motions to please her.[break][break]

"Yes, that's correct," Yumi confirmed, setting down Itazura so he could go where the man needed. "Do you have any scent spray for Pokémon? Something mild is fine."[break][break]

As she spoke, she looked around for a seat for herself. She was not going to spend the whole appointment standing.

Hoenn's tropical climate meant that even in mid-November, the weather was still warm enough that Yumi could enjoy a solo picnic in a public park along Route 110. She had arranged everything: the venue, the picnic service, the food catering.[break][break]

Wearing a sparkling, diaphanous dress that shimmered like moonstone, Yumi stretched catlike on a bed of pillows. Propping herself up on one elbow allowed her to pick at a platter of finger foods on the low table beside her. The caterers had arranged an assortment of delectable treats suitable for two, which was more than she could eat in one sitting. Of course, she could bring home whatever she couldn't finish.[break][break]

The arrangement of food included halved finger sandwiches with the crust cut off the bread, small Caprese salad skewers, small slices of fresh hondew and watmel berries, a cheese and charcuterie platter, raw vegetables with dip, and a two-tiered display of exquisite petit fours.[break][break]

Selecting a slice of hondew with a delicate fork, Yumi held it out for her Fennekin to take. "Have one of these, Yuuyake. They're so refreshing."[break][break]

The small fox Pokémon yipped with excitement from where she sat in her mistress' lap and accepted the treat with an eager mouth. Pleased, Yumi stroked the Fennekin's fur with her free hand.

Yumi had almost started pacing when Lex appeared seemingly out of the shadows themselves. Somehow, the red-haired woman looked exactly the same as the image of her in Yumi's memory, yet also very different. The way she carried herself, her demeanor — something fundamental had changed.[break][break]

On the contrary, Yumi had not. Not really.[break][break]

"Well, imagine my surprise to see you on those steps among the other bosses and underbosses and whatever. Made a name for yourself, have you?" A perfectly manicured hand tossed her hair over her shoulder. "And that shadow stuff you did just now? What the fuck was that?"[break][break]

Her reaction should not have been new to Lex. Yumi's mother had always scolded her for her sharp tongue and a tendency to talk down to everyone she met. It was unladylike behavior, after all. But despite it all, Yumi and Lex had become friends. Would this new Lex still accept Yumi, mordacity and all?[break][break]

Subconsciously, Yumi held her breath, one eyebrow raised, watching and waiting for Lex's reaction. But the corner of her mouth did curl up, ever so slightly, into a tentative smile.

Flippers and Clippers was a daft name, Yumi thought as she stepped through the front door of the Pokémon grooming salon, her Purrloin cradled in her arms. Perching her designer sunglasses atop her head, she gave the parlor's interior a quick sweep with violet eyes. Brightly lit, clean, tidy — it would suffice.[break][break]

She quickly crossed the room to stand before the man who'd greeted her. Like most other citizens in Slateport City — no, in Hoenn — he did not stand out to her at all. For that matter, neither did the other employee, who hovered nearby, watching them.[break][break]

Inwardly, Yumi sighed, appalled by the dismal state of everything.[break][break]

"Yumi Hasegawa," she said instead, by way of introduction. The sharpness of her tone suggested a woman used to making demands, not conversation. "I have an appointment at 3:30 for my Purrloin, Itazura."[break][break]

The Pokémon in question meowed mildly, though his gaze assessed the stranger with a keen criticality.

Upon the man's entrance, Yumi automatically assumed he was the proprietor. Her sharp gaze conducted a brief review of his appearance, noting that his clothing was tailored exactly to his figure and that his accessories — shoes, belt, tie, watch — were all of fine make. Satisfied, she set her initial opinion of him higher than average on her personal scale.[break][break]

"I'm selling," the woman replied, rummaging in her bag for a small jewelry box, its surface covered in a rich, dark red velvet. Manicured fingers painted with nail polish of a slightly brighter red pried open the box, revealing a pair of earrings. They were identical, each one sporting a large blue sapphire surrounded by smaller diamonds in an elegant pattern.[break][break]

Yumi had debated long and hard about selling this particular pair of earrings. She had received them as a gift from her grandfather on her eighteenth birthday. He had declared her a woman then, and women deserved diamonds. And a part of Yumi, sentimental fool that she was, was loath to let go of such a precious gift from the man who had doted on her when her own parents had not.[break][break]

But she needed the money. Badly. And each earring alone cost at least 20,000 PD.

Shopping, obviously. Reading fashion magazines. I love browsing runway looks online. Fashion is just so important. People think it's vain to be interested in clothes, but one thing no one likes to admit is they'll judge the shit out of you depending on what you wear. First impressions are everything. If you look like a slob, you're probably a slob in another area of your life. And if that hurts your feelings, that's your problem, not mine.

I really enjoy the way the chrysanthemums in my family's courtyard smelled. It reminds me of being a kid again. But nothing beats my favorite perfume: amber, a hint of warm musk, saffron, myrrh, with some almond and cardamom in there too. And lotus.

The trick with perfume is that a woman shouldn't switch between different kinds. Pick one and wear it forever. It will remind people of you, like a statement.

When Yumi had received the summons to attend the Team Rocket summit in Sootopolis, she had not known what to expect. But lowest on that list was to see Alexandra Briarwood, of all people, standing on the steps of the plaza alongside other high-ranking Rocket administration. Yumi had not had an opportunity immediately after the meeting to speak with the redhead, but that was not going to stop her.[break][break]

Reaching out to the Beast afterward had not been difficult to do at all; in fact, high-ranking Rockets were surprisingly available. Yumi and Lex arranged to meet in the submarine docked at Sootopolis, which is exactly where the former headed on that warm September day.[break][break]

Suffice to say, the courtyard where they had agreed to meet was nothing like Yumi had ever seen before. Whatever technology and Pokémon abilities were required to engineer such a location within a submarine were beyond her. She merely stood at the courtyard's entrance, wide eyes soaking in the astounding beauty of the place.[break][break]

It reminded her of the courtyard at home, which was exactly where she and Lex had first met, all those years ago.[break][break]

Yumi proceeded onto the green, sweeping her violet gaze across the space in search of her old, old friend.
