It’s with a backpack full of snacks and scattered bandaids, trusty dedenne on his shoulder, and a go-pro strapped to his noggin that Emerson finds himself back in the very place he’d seen a girl get fully possessed just weeks ago.[break][break]

He was…prepared now. Supposedly. If he could manage to keep up.[break][break]

He might be struggling a bit physically, but as his companions turn back toward him in succession, Em finds himself throwing a double thumbs up back at them, twiggy arms jutting straight ahead of him. “All good, let’s do this!”[break][break]

Given his last excursion into the borderlands, one might think he’d be a bit more apprehensive. That group had bolted quickly after the way things fell apart, but then again, they hadn’t really made it that far to begin with. Today, though, he was feeling unexpectedly jazzed about the whole ordeal despite the fact that climbing up these embankments only to skid down the other side made his lungs want to cave in on themselves.[break][break]

Nearly tripping over himself to catch up, he teeters then rights himself before puffing out a short, winded breath. “It’s behind it? Is there like a secret passage?” The recording light blinks red on the cam, and he twists to capture the crashing waterfall in the distance. Last time was just brushing the surface. This time, he’s gonna capture it all.

Emerson’s head bobbed in confirmation. “Yep! It doesn’t happen often, but I’ve seen it a couple times when one has nowhere to go, yannow?” A big im’ catch me if you can! more or less.[break][break]

Luckily, Gunner’s umbreon seemed quite keen, picking up the order with ease. By far a better tracker than his floating bird.[break][break]

His hands clapped together when the umbreon properly identified what should hopefully be the correct hiding spot. “Very well done, Laudine!”[break][break]

His typically awkward demeanor had faded in the moment, making way for the arena he was comfortable in. Though he didn’t really register that.[break][break]

He followed Gunner to the spot. “Glitch, LOCK-ON please, then force it out if you can manage.” He paused, a last minute thought coming to him. “Nothing electrical—don’t want to fry one of their servers in the process.”[break][break]

The porygon-z fixated on the rack, seemingly pinpointing with accuracy before shooting a bright SIGNAL BEAM in that direction. Just a burst of channeled light, but it should hopefully force whatever was hiding in there out.

His nose crinkles at the name, “Work in progress, yannow? It makes sense though. Given that it’s…” he pauses, looking down at his phone, “2:30 now.”[break][break]

He points a chopstick at James. “And your gyoza. Obviously. We could do video logs too.”[break][break]

It’s a little funny to be planning something like this with someone he’s only just befriended. Even more so that he doesn’t mind the fact that it’s a team endeavor. But that should be a good thing, given his excessive introversion.

James' antics and deliberately stilted speaking draw more laughter from Emerson. “Yeah!”[break][break]

He can’t stop laughing, the more the other goes on, until he’s holding his sides with drunken giggles. And then at the summoning, the rats do indeed start coming from all corners of the apartment.[break][break]

First his dedenne, then minccino. Both pawmi, a pichu. A set of morpeko. Parachisu and emolga alike. All expecting treats.[break][break]

There’s more hiding out, apparently not interested in the contents of the tin. A sleepy alolan raichu watches from a cushy nest of blankets in a papasan chair. But there are still so many.[break][break]

“They’re gonna swarm you.”

“Might be something else, maybe, yeah..” He looked down at the umbreon, and let the last few puzzle pieces click into place. “Is your umbreon very good at tracking? Or scenting even.” Emerson didn’t have any good trackers of his own—maybe he should look into that, if his hunch proved correct.[break][break]

“Going out on a limb here…It doesn’t happen often, but…it might be like…an infestation?” Or maybe possession was a better word for it. His hands slipped into his pockets casually as he looked up at Gunner.[break][break]

“I could be wrong, but if there’s nothing wrong with the hardware, and there’s no evidence of tampering or firewall breaching, it might be a Pokémon causing some mischief.”[break][break]

Looking back over the room, he considered. “It could be in here, but if it’s, say, a rotom. It could be anywhere in the building, on some connected tech. Computer tower, installed router..anything like that.”[break][break]

He tipped his head at his porygon-z to try again—that time with an altered operative.

“Oh,” surprise filtered into his expression, and in spite of his efforts to remain even-keel, his face reddened. “Well, I’m glad I’ve made a positive impression.” Having any sort of reputation or reaction certainly wasn’t something he’d anticipated.

“Oof, yeah,” Emerson grimaced, “That’s an undertaking. Hopefully I can help you avoid that.”[break][break]

Except…his scans weren’t really yielding much difference, either. Glitch returned to him, chirps informing him that, yes, the systems seemed to be healthy. Em frowned. “It all seems clean to me too.”[break][break]

Reaching back to tie the long mop of his red hair into a bun to push it out of the way, he mulled over the agent’s words with knit brows and a stern expression that almost didn’t fit right on his babyface. “What kinds of external sources did they search for?” His hand lifted to rest atop his porygon-z’s head where it levitated alongside him.[break][break]

“Just invasive tech? Or anything else, as well?”

He nodded, silently following Gunner through the building halls. Long, curious glances were cast into any room with an open door.[break][break]

Emerson hummed, brows furrowing as Gunner explained the lack of change and the lengths that the IT staff had already gone to. No sense in suggesting the “turn it off, then back on” method. A tried and true tactic for a lot of his older clients. No, this was a crew that by all accounts seemed to know very much what they were doing.[break][break]

“Well, I hate to make you waste the time to bring someone in, but I’m not sure what could be done by me that hasn’t already been tried…” Still, he moved toward the line of servers. “Can’t hurt having a second set of eyes, I suppose.”[break][break]

A sidelong glance was directed at Gunner, along with a small smile. “I appreciate it.” With a wave of his hand, the porygon-z that had been floating along behind him quietly drew up to Emerson’s shoulder. “Run a diagnostic for me?”[break][break]

Glitch began to flit from server to server, Emerson following behind. “Has anything like this ever happened before today?”

His eyes widened at her suggestion—despite the surprise in his expression, there was a brightness that tinged the red of his irises. Like a weasel or a magpie being ensnared by something shiny.[break][break]

“Why me? And not like…an engineer?” His question was one borne of curiosity more than self-doubt. No, he could definitely tinker and hijack equipment, but surely there were more qualified candidates.[break][break]

The inquiry died quickly, though, when faced with the tech Penny swathed in light. Almost instantly, Em had the desire to investigate. Handle the pieces and see how they fit together. “Maybe—I’d have to tinker with it, I think. What kind of tech is this?”[break][break]

Even at a distance, it didn’t look typical.

Emerson was blithely unaware of her situation—not that he’d have any reason to know. Though if she happened to mention it, they’d find they have a mutual friend in James, at least.[break][break]

His eyebrows climbed as she inched closer. Initially causing a bright red to fan across his cheeks, though a quick side glance revealed the cause. Kinda rude of them, encroaching on the duo’s loner territory like that.[break][break]

The lean in, though, drew a natural mirroring from Emerson—it was that conspiratorial edge. A quiet laugh slipped from his mouth before he quickly covered it with his hand. “Oh me too. Somehow they’re less tolerable in person.”[break][break]

Which, okay, fine— it wasn’t an easy place to fall in Em’s personal evaluations.[break][break]

His voice dropped to a hush, “I got here too early. Some of them haven’t stopped talking since they walked in. Even worse of a pissing contest than in-game. Somehow, dunno how that’s possible.”

He tucks a long strand of hair behind his ear. “I don’t have one, but I feel like I should, honestly.” The travel ones are fun in particular, in his opinion. “I like to watch video blogs, I think those can be even more entertaining.”[break][break]

“Yep! That’s…the plan!” Em laughs, obviously entertained by the enthusiasm he’s met with.[break][break]

It’s probably good that he can’t help James much, and that he’s steady, because Em is a little wobbly on his own feet too. Something he’s quick to discover when he nearly eats it over a sidewalk crack.[break][break]

But he stays upright! They both do, somehow.[break][break]

“Um uhhh….” he flicks on the living room light. “Shake the can.”[break][break]

He points to a treat tin on a shelf just inside the door. That’ll make the rat swarm come out of the woodwork.

The HBIC wanted his work on a job? When he’d been contacted, he’d all but balked at his phone screen. No way. This had to be like big, important tech, yeah? Of course, given his tinkering with PENELOPE LIVY on some independent projects, one would think that Emerson would be a little more accustomed to this stuff by now.[break][break]

And yet.[break][break]

There he was, standing in the lobby of the sleek business building—gawking at literally everything around him. His porygon-z, Glitch, hovered behind him waiting for any requests made before they evaluated the system interface.[break][break]

His shoes felt alarmingly squeaky on the tile flooring. Mousy and small, he huddled at his designated meeting point and tried not to look too intimidated by the tall, serious man who eventually approached. He peered up at Gunner Graves , nodding. “Y-yes, of course, Agent!” A tentative smile was offered back.[break][break]

Then he huffed a breath, pushing away his nerves to move into work mode. “Any update or changes on what’s going on?”
