THE BORDER IS A MOUNTAINOUS PURGATORY OF MUTED SEPIA SMOKE. By floating islands, translucent bridges soar through the realm toward the heavens. Tall stone spires jut out from the spiritual mist. In the sky, the wisps of spirits can be seen heading toward their final destination before the afterlife...[break][break]

Curiously, there are four broken seals embedded in four mountains. Though Adrian Malcolm and YVELTAL may have seen their location upon their unceremonious entry, the spirit realm has shifted since their last visit, rendering each broken seal far apart from each other.

Looking up from the map he'd slowly been filling with each border visit, stokes of the pen documenting the world beyond for future travellers, Angelo gestures with a lift of his chin to the east. “There. That waterfall's where we're headin'. The seal should be behind it.”

Down the mountainous slope on which they stood atop, water pools into a valley. Noise of the falls a thundering cacophony of endless rapids as it spills over the lip of a floating island.

“Told you it wasn't far,” he throws a grin over his shoulder at his companions, oblivious that perhaps emerson whitlock and memphis evren may not have the same threshold for hiking distance.

There's an adventurous thirst in Angelo he's sure no amount of rapids would quench. Time in the rifts were always too short for his liking.

“Ready to go?” Despite his urge to skid down the incline, Angelo turns back to the pair and returns a folded map back into his jacket pocket. Exercising restraint.

His shadow? Not so much. Behind him it stretches towards the waterfall, thin as when the sun drags it to meet the horizon.

he has only ever heard rumors of these places through the world wide web. but experiencing it up close? it’s wild, it’s bizarre, and it makes memphis wanna puke just a little bit.

luckily he’s able to keep his lunch down and his negative thoughts are kept caged behind polite smiles and false happiness.

”oh good!” he lets out a small laugh. ”because um, i think my legs might be turning into jelly mr. vestri.”

hopefully GIDEON GRAVES doesn’t think him some kinda lightweight for not being as physically fit or able as angelo is. he glances back to look at their other adventurer, to see how they’re fairing.

It’s with a backpack full of snacks and scattered bandaids, trusty dedenne on his shoulder, and a go-pro strapped to his noggin that Emerson finds himself back in the very place he’d seen a girl get fully possessed just weeks ago.[break][break]

He was…prepared now. Supposedly. If he could manage to keep up.[break][break]

He might be struggling a bit physically, but as his companions turn back toward him in succession, Em finds himself throwing a double thumbs up back at them, twiggy arms jutting straight ahead of him. “All good, let’s do this!”[break][break]

Given his last excursion into the borderlands, one might think he’d be a bit more apprehensive. That group had bolted quickly after the way things fell apart, but then again, they hadn’t really made it that far to begin with. Today, though, he was feeling unexpectedly jazzed about the whole ordeal despite the fact that climbing up these embankments only to skid down the other side made his lungs want to cave in on themselves.[break][break]

Nearly tripping over himself to catch up, he teeters then rights himself before puffing out a short, winded breath. “It’s behind it? Is there like a secret passage?” The recording light blinks red on the cam, and he twists to capture the crashing waterfall in the distance. Last time was just brushing the surface. This time, he’s gonna capture it all.

He liked their energy. Even if one of them was somewhat lacking in it. memphis evren looked like he was about to keel over and roll down the embankment to the eastern seal.

Here's hoping GIDEON GRAVES wouldn't mind him returning his assistant with a sense of balance that could rival that of a fresh seafarer, on their first choppy sea.

When he reaches the bottom of the hill with a springy jump at the end, Angelo gives emerson whitlock a pat on the shoulder. Appreciating that he's documenting the experience.

“If there is, it's definitely a well kept secret. I can't see any obvious passageways,” blue eyes drag around the base of the waterfall, on the rocks framing it. “What about you? Got a zoom on your camera?”

What he can see as he strolls closer however, tauntingly blurred just beyond the curtain of water, is a circular door. The seal waiting to be documented and explored.

“Fuck. That's cold.”

Dipping curious fingers through the veil, Angelo is struck by how frigid the cascade is. How fierce it is. Promising to thunder down on top of their heads with the kind of majesty that had spawned tales of stripping away impurities or the like...

Yeah. Right.

“Maybe this is just what you need, Evren! Bit of cold water will wake you right up.” He shoots the archivist a playful grin, before the waterfall consumes him. Leaving both his companions and shadow on the other side.

well, you know what they say. what you have and what you want are never the same thing, right?[break][break]

memphis watches with intrigue as the two inspect the waterfall. there's a glint in angelo vestri's eyes that makes memphis nearly skip forward, as if he's not tired anymore. the way the waterfall presents itself reminds him of a few myths and theories his father used to tell him.[break][break]

"deep and wide..." he realizes only after a few moments that what he said and the thought process that led him there wasn't shared.[break][break]

"my father once did a sermon on the theroy that one's spirit and one's body could be separated. there's a myth that follows his theory, i read it in a book not long after his sermon."[break][break]

memphis rattles off, not thinking much of it.[break][break]

"cascades of truth shall wash over those who dare to approach that which remains sealed. beware, weary traveler, that you enter a test without realization and thus unprepared."[break][break]

“Hmm, yeah…just a sec,” he reaches up to fiddle with the toggle button until it zooms in as far as it will go. Not that it turns up much in the way of results.[break][break]

Emerson squints at the waterfall as they near it—making out the faint shadow on the other side. Guess the only way in was through. His nose immediately wrinkles in distaste at the idea. angelo vestri ’s on it, though. Which makes sense because he’s, like, way more qualified for these sorts of things.[break][break]

With no choice but to play follow the leader, he tried to psych himself up. A serious expression ill-fit on his face as slaps at his cheeks light with both hands to rally the willpower to step into chilled water. Only…to freeze in place as memphis evren speaks. He shifts to the side slowly, palms still pressed to his face, wide-eyed.[break][break]

“That’s some freaky, ominous shit, my guy,” he intones with an air of wariness. No, no. The last time he was here, he watched a group mate get possessed… or something. So how bad could a waterfall be?[break][break]

With that in mind, he steels himself—only pausing one last time when he realizes his camera might not be waterproof. “Um, er..”[break][break]

He doesn’t think about, y’know, just momentarily taking the head piece off. That would be too easy. Fumbling through his bag, Em notes the lack of forethought. No ziplock bag…nary a roll of plastic wrap. All he’s got is an empty cool ranch doritos bag from earlier.[break][break]

It crinkles as he pulls it over the cam piece (still recording) and mentally labels the move as sheer ingenuity. Even if it immediately slips off from the sheer force of the cascading water.[break][break]

“Feels kinda weird, doesn’t it?” His teeth are chattering. Long, wet hair making him look like a drowned toy furfrou. But that was maybe the least of it.

Angelo doesn't hear memphis evren's tale of warning, the falls thundering on top his head rendering him deaf to the call.

When he finally passes through to the other side, now drenched to the bone, an exhale intertwined of exhilaration and shock from the icy plunge rattles past his teeth.

“Feels like my balls are gonna freeze off, if that's what you mean?” He remarks to emerson whitlock, dragging a hand down his face to wipe water from his eyes. There's a flicker of a grimace. He didn't like the cold much. “What was bookworm saying out there?”

Flicking the frigid droplets away, Angelo finally see the seal in all of its glory. Much like the one he'd previously visited, its shell is broken, cracked open along its intricate carvings to reveal a peek of the darkness inside.

He takes a step forward, keen to see whether the interior of this one has been picked clean, also.

Only for his breath to suddenly feel short. Cold seizing him in a way that made his jaw clench in discomfort, vision trembling like he's caught in an earth tremor.

Maybe the cold had a nastier bite than he thought...?

Then, everything plunges. His breath. Heartbeat. His step turns into a stumble, gravity taking him. Until it doesn't.

Suddenly, Angelo feels weightless. Blue eyes shoot up, only for the crease on his brow to fade, also.

“Do you see what I'm seeing...?”

Because it looked like, in the gloom of the chamber beneath the rapids, ghostly humanoid forms were looking intently their way...

From the shadow Angelo had left behind, remaining beyond the water's curtain, two ruby eyes pierce unblinking. Watching. Waiting to see if this mortal man would manage to emerge from the cascades of truth as he entered.

angelo vestri is so far ahead of them, likely already at the seal. the seal that memphis wants to see for himself. after seeing emerson whitlock try and get the camera covered before going through, memphis watches the chip back curiously before reaching to grab it, shaking the water from it.[break][break]

littering is bad. worse when it's in a spiritual domain where you can potentially piss off powerful pokémon.[break][break]

and what's more, y'know what he shouldn't do?[break][break]

he absolutely should not walk through that water. the very one he touched to get the dorito bag.[break][break]

it's just a waterfall. he tells himself silently as he braces with a deep breath and follows just behind emerson whitlock into the cold.[break][break]

after exiting to the other side, there's a small dance that commences as he holds him self and his teeth chatter.[break][break]

his dance stops, his body frozen, as he looks down to see angelo's body not moving. he wondered why.[break][break]

his words die in his throat as he feels like the wind is knocked out of his brain, if that is even possible. his spirit exits his own body and suddenly there are two angelos. and two memphis'. he looks at his hands, blinking curiously.[break][break]

"what's happening?" his voice echos ominously into the spirit realm.

He shivers, violently so. But angelo vestri ’s reply draws a sputtery laugh from the redhead all the same. Trying to shake off the moppishly soaked feeling, his long hair splats across his face. But the sensation begins…to dull? “Uuuhhh y-yeah that. But also, I dunno.” Emerson looks down at his hands, turning them back and forth. “Weird like…I’m only feeling the sensation because logically I know that’s what I’m supposed to be feeling.”[break][break]

There’s this other feeling too. Like he should leave. But not just to get out of the borderlands itself, but to..cross over?[break][break]

Or maybe he’s just frozen.[break][break]

“Oh he was saying somethin’ like about how souls can detach from bodies and, uhhhh…tests and cascades of truth?” he stops short when he sees memphis evren , and lifts a hand. “Hey! You pass your test, weary traveler dude?” It’s only when Memphis goes to grab the floating chip back that Em realizes he lost it. “Oh—shoot!” His hands fly up to the cam corder…and pass straight through. “Ummmm, what…?”[break][break]

He turns back to Angelo, “Is the light still blinking?” but Angelo’s looking beyond him, and so is Memphis. And for good reason.[break][break]

“Uh, yeah—same question.” He points lamely at the archivist in reference as he balks at the duplicates clustered near to one another. That strange sensation returns, urging him to tug further away from that corporeal version of himself. Okay, so feeling funny was putting it lightly.[break][break]

And the dorito bag is still floating in the pool, yikes. What a trivial thought in the middle of all this.

He feels like he's about to drift away into the clouds, weightless. Only not in the way Angelo would like.

If he wanted to fly there were a million ways to go about it. Being a ghost, Angelo decides as he turns his hand in front of his face with sinking dread, wasn't one of them.

GIDEON GRAVES was going to be so thrilled that he'd gotten his new assistant's soul siphoned out of his body.

“Uh.. It's just a tiny, microscopic, Joltik-sized possibility but...” He turns to look at his two traveller companions, at the versions that Angelo can just about see the waterfall through. “Evren could've been right.”

Turning to look at himself (really weird, by the way) Angelo watches as a startled expression comes over his own face. In a frantic display, his body begins to pat curiously at his face and chest, fingers delving beneath material and into pockets.

“Hey. Handsey McGhostface. Stop tryin' to cop a feel.”

Angelo is uncertain whether his physical body heard his demand or not but the patting of wandering hands comes to a stop a breath later.

They still. Then, from his pocket, he pulls out an orb that shimmers in the dim light like dew, fire flickering within.

The soul dew with Victini's flame burns warmly, like life, in the cavern.

“That's mine. Put it back.”

Suddenly, the small chamber behind the rapids begins to feel a little more... cramped. Other glassy, humanoid shapes begin to turn their enraptured attention towards the Soul Dew - faded hands outstretched.

Alarm bolts as cold as the falls through him, Angelo lunging to stand protectively in the way of an approaching spectre. “Don't even think about it!”

Can ghosts throw hands with one another? We're about to find out.

🗺️ ANGELO VESTRI's SOUL DEW will cause a soul or many souls to attempt their escape from this plane by entering it and usurping any victini soul fragment(s) inside.

"yeah, that tracks. usually happens that i'm right at the worst of times..." memphis mumbles, mostly to himself, as he watches the specters beginning to form and go for angelo's body. or more like, whatever angelo's body is holding.[break][break]

and then he looks to his own and he wonders, can i move my body? could i somehow help mr. vestri out by moving my body?[break][break]

but before he can really move toward his body to try and help, a specter beats him to it.[break][break]

"um..." and his body is no longer his own, some other spirit within it. "um, hey—"[break][break]

there's an uncharacteristic stern tone to his voice. one that is due to the panic moving through his spirit in waves. he can feel it in his core, in the pit of his soul. it's confirmed when his body's eyes open.[break][break]

"somebody's in my body!"

It's as if his mind is working on a lag, because he's still processing the fact the camera not on his head. The chip bag in the water. The detachment, and the surrealness of it.[break][break]

If the camera isn't on his head, it's... he pauses, then turns to the body he seems to be separated from. His, body. The cam light still blinks bright red. Phew.[break][break]

This was going to turn out some weird footage. Wait, could they even be seen on camera? Actually, did it even matter? Once again, Em feels that odd tug. The unspoken sense that maybe it would be better to just leave all this behind. It was a hassle to worry about. What was the point if he could just drift on through to somewhere else?.[break][break]

As tumult began to unfold around him, he stood (floated?) there, tugging against the burning desire to just ditch his corporeal form altogether.[break][break]

Somebody's in my body![break][break]

"Huh?" Dewy, glazed eyes blink, and his head turns on a slow swivel toward memphis evren, then follows his line of sight toward what had been left behind. Again, that dose of apathy holds him still, as he watches memphis evren fail to reach his own body and angelo vestri attempt to ward of an influx of ghosties seeking a host.[break][break]

So much squabbling over the right to one of those warm bodies.[break][break]

It isn't until he registers that this could happen to him next that he snaps out of his stupor, and the babbling panic sets in.[break][break]

"H-hey! Didn't we bring something..? Uh...a-a tag! Thing! Who had it? Was it me? Did I hold it?" Emerson begins to pat himself down before remembering that that's not going to do him a lick of good if he's not in his body. And so the race back to it begins as he tears away from the temptation locking him in place. How does he even get back in to begin with?[break][break]

Maybe it's like hacking a computer. Or...or something.

It all just collapses into - even more - chaos.

Angelo finds that ghosts could, in fact, touch one another and promptly forces one of them away from the Soul Dew with an elbow to the chest.

Whoever said you shouldn't disrespect the dead surely hadn't been in this situation before.

“The spell tag thing, right?” He shouts back as emerson whitlock frantically searches for the slip of paper they'd brought, daring to only risk a glance over as he holds a spectre on the ground. “Uh - shit - I swear I saw it... I'm a bit tied up right now!”

Angelo bites out a string of curses as another desperate, grabby ghost tries to push past. “Evren? Did you have it, you're the history, sermon expert?” His hand snatches out first, grabbing the dead by the ankle and making them trip (as heavily as a ghost could.)

“Whoever's got it, do us a solid and we'll head back? How's that sound?”

Somehow, Angelo doubts there will be any objections...
