At the apology, Emerson quickly shook his head. The ponytail he’d gathered his hair into smacked him in the face again. Unruly even when wrangled back. “No! No, it’s okay.” How embarrassing… Still, it wasn’t like Kieran was expecting anything in particular from him, so he should just play it cool and not act so flustered over being surprised. But, well, Emerson was Emerson and he couldn’t not be flustered. He seemed literally incapable of it.[break][break]

“Pretty?” he blinked rapidly, hand lifting to absently pat at his own head as his face rapidly turned a shade that matched said hair. Was he serious? No way. It was Kieran who had the pretty hair, fluffy and cloudlike while Em’s was just a mess. Always tangling up despite his efforts to keep it brushed. “I- well..I’m glad you found me, then.” Through his embarrassment, he tried to smile, but he probably looked dumb. Like it was a fake smile, but it wasn’t! He just wasn’t good at whatever this was. It had been enough effort to get him out to a bar with JAMES BAKER, who was a established buddy, without being totally awkward.[break][break]

This felt amplified to a thousand, because..because– because nothing. There was nothing to derive from this. If he could’ve smacked his cheeks a little bit to sharpen himself up and not look like a moron, he would have.[break][break]

He didn’t have the confidence that came from hiding behind his phone or his computer, and that stupidly made all the difference in situations like this. When he didn’t really know how to express himself. “Um..” he looked around the crowded space wildly, for something to latch onto when thankfully Kieran seemed to have a suggestion prepared. “Yeah, definitely. Let’s do that. I like kabobs.”[break][break]

But any snack was good, really.

The lurch backward as he’s yoinked back by the vines tethering him to the group almost causes Emerson to drop his phone. Captured in the recording is garbled yelp of surprise and everything around them in shaky cam glory. Not that there’s much to see apart from fog and attacks that sail through the mist toward them. “Glitch, c’mon!” The shout for his porygon-z prompts the creature to float behind the safety of the mega sableye’s gem as well.[break][break]

Shoulders rising and falling as he breathes heavily, he hears someone shouting about what to do, but as he turns to survey the group, that’s not where his attention fixates. A chill shoots down his spine at the sight of Niola Winchester .[break][break]

“Uhm…” the camera turns on her, but in all honesty, he’s sort of forgotten he’s even holding it at the sight of her eyes rolling back as she drops. Speak up, she’d told him minutes before. But now his stomach churns with more than just the normal anxiety that comes with involving himself with other people.[break][break]

Swallowing hard through the panic that creeps up his throat, the attacks still going on around them fade as he inches closer. “H-hey! Are you okay?” Em looks back over his shoulder to call out with more force behind his voice. “Something’s wrong!”[break][break]

Said just in time as Niola shoots back up to her feet with a shout, sending him stumbling back.

Emerson never did grow out of that reclusive stage. But that was okay. Most of the time. He would’ve never thought he’d be standing in his own kitchen making gyoza with the delivery guy.[break][break]

Maybe he’s learning just a little bit, though.[break][break]

“Never was too patient with practice.” He shrugs.[break][break]

His hands clap together in obvious delight when the dumpling folds easier and looks much more proper. And his grin is unfaltering when James commends his work. “What do you do after?”

His head tilts, though, and he falls silent as he listens.[break][break]

Coppery red eyes watch James with a degree of sympathy.[break][break]

“I’m sorry that happened.” And truly, he is because a tentative hand stretches to rest on his friend’s upper arm. “My point is—at least you had something to risk losing in the first place.”[break][break]

Emerson isn’t often friendly or outgoing. Maybe sweet at times, or endearing. But he’s awkward and shy and poor at handling more than a few stable connections at a time. And something he doesn’t like to hear at all—[break][break]

“You shouldn’t feel bad for what you love doing.” Emerson doesn’t go home. There’s a reason for that. “Even if you need balance, you’re not wrong for doing something that excites or fuels you.”

He nearly jumps out of his skin when Illeana speaks directly to him– not because she sounds unkind, but because he had become lost in his own head. “Oh! Uh, right. Sorry, er..yeah.” With a careful nudge from his porygon-z, Emerson does in fact drift closer toward the venusaur that the group now orbits around as they descend further into the mist.[break][break]

A small, wobbly smile is offered to Niola. Rust-colored eyes snap up from his feet to meet hers, “Right, yeah. I’ll..do my best.”[break][break]

Initially, it was only a placating remark, but the longer they wander the mist, the more uncertain he grows. There’s nothing worth recording yet. So maybe this is a dud? “Are you sure it’s not…like…an optical illusion?” A warbling response to Niola’s claim they’re going in circles. But maybe they only think that they are? Maybe they’re just wandering further in, with the pretense of remaining relatively close to the rift entrance.[break][break]

Maybe that’s what this place wants them to think…[break][break]

He’s only working himself up further, so when Yui Fujin Silph’s warning cuts through the worry spiral, Em is nearly too late to react. “You try to lock on too!” he directs his porygon-z, whirling toward the back of their group. It tries to pinpoint the central force through the dense mist, firing back with a crackling ZAP CANNON[break][break]

Within seconds, his camera is out and recording as well, though for all he knows, these could be attacks for normal Pokémon and nothing outright…ominous.

The lag in James’ response makes Em grimace.[break][break]

“No, no. It’s definitely bad..” Spoken as he stares down at it again, but soon enough he’s cracking up as well. “I would say my prep and plating has always been questionable.”[break][break]

As much as Emerson enjoys cooking, it’s almost never pretty. But it goes down the same and taste is really all he cares about. The gyoza could be rolled into the wrapper and he wouldn’t care.[break][break]

At the same time, though, now he wants to succeed. Consider it the competitive gamer nature that’s in his personality, locked behind his awkward shyness.[break][break]

“Really?” He pauses in what he’s doing to look up again, obviously surprised. “But you’re so, uhhh…friendly!” Emerson is more apt to turn into a small statue in a group of people.[break][break]

“Okay, okay, okay.” His expression furrows in concentration, eyes drifting between the dumpling James works on and his own. Noting the fold he missed the last time around.

“Well, yeah, you.” The response prompts another laugh, though.[break][break]

“Okay…so we match. That just means we can bother each other about it.”[break][break]

Accountability or whatever. He takes another swig of his drink, the contents knocking back easier once the initial sip is out of the way. He’s not exactly a lightweight, but he’s not a heavyweight either. Thank being 5’5 and all twig limbs for that.[break][break]

Em looks down at his glass, though, considering. “I’ve practically always been a recluse, so I think you’ve got a head start,” he comments, glancing over with a small grin. “You’ve got a headstart on friends and family to usher you back in. I’m sure it’ll take you no time at all.”[break][break]

There’s no resentment as he says as much. Emerson actively chose to be more or less a hermit, and he’d never been close to his family or fond of the high expectations held for him. It’s why he never went back to Paldea after graduating.[break][break]

Still… he has his reasons now for wanting to do even just a little bit better.

Em catches sight of dark hair and glasses. He almost has half a mind to duck back down as soon as he speaks up, but it’s too late – he’s been spotted. And it would be stupid to have asked a question and then hide, right?[break][break]

But such is his nature: a walking mess of embarrassment, impulse, and immediate regret for his life choices. No matter how inconsequential.[break][break]

If he were alert enough, maybe he’d make the same deduction about what caused the sudden outage. But Emerson hasn’t slept in…oh, he doesn’t know when. But the murmuring from the stranger causes him to pause, head tilting. “Unless the lights use a separate breaker,” he shrugs.[break][break]

Sitting back, in his chair, it swivels side to side as he lazily reaches for the red bull can that had been set to the side by him earlier. It’s as he’s popping the tab that the lights buzz and flicker out. His head tips back, up toward the ceiling with a frown as tangly, red hair waterfalls over the back of the chair. “Uh-”[break][break]

Then he’s shooting upward again, looking with a degree more directness at the stranger. His age? Maybe, he’s never been much of a good guess on that. “I think you jinxed it.”[break][break]

Rust red eyes dart away, though– puzzled as they try to lock onto anything that might be the source. After a moment, he rises entirely, and moves toward the front window of the cafe. Just for the sake of seeing whether or not it’s just here or the whole block pitched into sudden dark.

Someone slid into the booth across from him and jarred him from his line of thought. Immediately, all of his notions of progress fell out of his head as red crept across his skin to match his hair. And hers too, actually.[break][break]

Heat flared in their face as her remark landed. They’re bad at this, and this only proved it. “Ah, er..I’m. Well-” Em’s jaw snapped shut after trying and failing to stammer something out. “Shy.” And honestly, it was a surprise someone felt like he’d be a decent tablemate.[break][break]

Emerson glanced down, his finger pulling through strands of his own red hair. “Fair point…” He hadn’t thought of that, though it didn’t make much sense to him. Still, it was a good enough reason as any to have pinpointed him given the fact that he didn’t think he stood out from the crowd all that much.[break][break]

“Not used to sweet stuff like this,” he managed to not fumble his words as he spoke, noting the similar twist in her expression as she downs her drink. Of course, he didn’t knock his own back in the same way – and judging from her reaction, he can’t say he’s inclined to.[break][break]

He was quick to shake his head, though, at the offer. “No! Uh, no. It’s fine. I don’t mind. I’m just…” he shrugged, glance a touch helpless, though he tried for a smile that might have looked slightly like a grimace in reality, “...awkward.”[break][break]

With a short huff, he takes a longer pull from his glass. An attempt to toughen himself up to socializing. “I’m Emerson. Are you from Rustboro?”

It really was an earnest excuse! A lot of people were amazingly adept at breaking their own technology when there was even barely a problem to fix to begin with. But it wouldn’t be fair to dump all that on her. Not when he hardly knew this person beyond a few words.[break][break]

Coppery eyes drifted down to the skeptical riolu at her side, and Emerson quickly perked. “Ah!” he fished in his pocket for a pokeball before releasing a riolu of his own. “Say hello, Berlioz!”[break][break]

Contrary to the other riolu’s surly behavior, this one was incredibly lax and only yawned in response.[break][break]

“Me, name? Name..oh, yeah, uhm-“ his face began to rival his hair in color. He must’ve looked pretty dumb, not introducing himself from the jump, but he tried not to linger on it. “Emerson. Em. Whichever, I don’t mind.” His throat bubbled over with nervous laughter.[break][break]

His dedenne swiftly rubbed his face against Emerson’s cheek—the soft staticky zap aimed at snapping him out of it.

It’s volunteer work, and he’s not exactly sure why he signed up for it in the first place, but it’s probably a terrible first impression that he’s running late.[break][break]

Though in his defense, it was because of his actual job.[break][break]

He holds little reverence for ho-oh’s shrine, being from Paldea. But he’s at least decent enough to help keep it maintained. If that’s what doing his part or whatever means. Though…he can’t make any promises about being efficient in tidying.[break][break]

As he nears the shrine, he spots someone and waves frantically. Her hair is practically as red as his own. Huffing and puffing all the way because he’s, frankly, out of breath from climbing the hill. The dedenne on his shoulder mimics his gesture.[break][break]

“Hi, um…sorry, for the lateness. Had some, um, technical issues before this.”

Little by little, he’s finding it nicer to spend time around people. For the longest, he was content for it to be exclusively through the barrier of a computer screen on a good day. So it’s nice. Having a friend.[break][break]

“Go out more,” he says simply, then laughs.[break][break]

It’s not really a joke, though. There’s a part of him that’s grown more curious about the world enough to venture out into again. Difficult as that can be on a lot of days.[break][break]

Retreating to his home and hiding away is always the more alluring option. The safer option.[break][break]

Though James doesn’t touch his drink, Em does sip at his. Long and slow before his head tilts. Then, his nose wrinkles in amusement. “Some days…going out more.”[break][break]

He waves a hand in dismissal of his own thoughts, though. “What about you? Big scholar like you, there’s gotta be something you’re gunning for.”

Emerson nods and then watches attentively as James moves through the process. His face twists up in serious concentration, and when the time comes for him to try, he’s still not certain.[break][break]

“Ooohhhkay..”[break][break]

He moved through the motions that James had — though naturally with far less precision. It’s a clumsy attempt, but it’s the best he’s got. Eventually his hands fall away from the poorly folded gyoza with a slight jazz hands flourish.[break][break]

“Ta-daa…oh it’s so bad.” But rather than stumble over his embarrassment as he normally might, when he looks back up at James, he laughs.[break][break]

Emboldened just enough, he tries to make a second one, listening carefully as the other continues. “Yeah, I guess I can understand that.” He pauses, shrugging. “The simpler part at least. I never really fit in so I doubt carefully picking shirts would’ve done me much good anyway.”[break][break]

It’s not a bitter remark, only simple reflection.

It’s much too late, but Emerson continues to wonder just what it is he’s doing here.[break][break]

Why is it that he’d thought at the time that fishing firsthand information about these strange rifts for his podcast was smart? He didn’t do well in the general outdoors, let alone in groups. No, the smart thing to have done would have been to stay home and hack some random volunteer’s equipment, should he find some pathway to gaining that intel.[break][break]

But no, here he was with literally no one he knew, looking like a deerling in the headlights. Instead of snatching someone else’s account for the listening numbers and the subscriber increase, it had been his own bold idea to volunteer himself and then maybe…sneak into the system and bump himself to the top of the list. A qualified candidate? Yeah right.[break][break]

He was kicking last week Emerson.[break][break]

Keeping himself to the fringes of the group, his porygon-z floats alongside him, at the ready to use a SIGNAL BEAM to cut through the heavy, ominous blanket of fog. His phone camera open and ready to record anything strange that might occur. His mouth opens to make the offer of assistance, then closes. Fingers twist anxiously around the straps of his knapsack instead. Silent, save for a muted “Um,” that probably only gets swallowed up by the chatter of the others and in the dense mist.
