He’d lowkey been dreading this all week.

He didn’t get why their guild leader had decided they needed an in person get together. But apparently it had been put forward and the majority agreed. Emerson was hesitant. Not because he disliked his fellow gamers.[break][break]

It was more his social discomfort in general.[break][break]

Emerson wasn’t the confident person out in the wilds of society that he was behind the comfort of his computer screen. It felt glaringly obvious now, as he remained on the fringes of a group of people he thought could say he knew fairly well.[break][break]

Despite that, though, he was awkward and stilted.[break][break]

Rusty eyes glanced lazily through the room, observing each person and clocking for who they played, without really making the effort to engage.

The last thing Emerson had anticipated was an email from Penelope Livy, councilwoman. In fact, when it popped up in his inbox exactly one day after their assignment, he’d nearly spat his morning coffee all over his laptop keys. Not that he’d had any issue in working with her—more that he couldn’t possibly fathom what she wanted him around for.[break][break]

Then again, he recalled her obvious enthusiasm at his proclivity for tech work. Had she done some digging and managed to find out about his more under the table dealings. No way…he kept things airtight. She couldn’t have..right? Not in just one day.[break][break]

Which meant she really must’ve wanted an IT guy. For, uh, whatever reason. But consider his curiosity piqued, because Emerson found himself agreeing and showing up at the League HQ despite any wariness or reservation.[break][break]

He failed poorly at not gawking at every little thing as Penny’s assistant led him through the halls toward the labs tucked away out of immediate sight. His hand nervously twisted the strap of his back, but he still managed to lift his other in greeting. “Uhh, hey. What’s..up?” Stellar formal greeting, A plus.[break][break]

Emerson hums as his eyes roll up toward the ceiling in feigned thought, before deadpanning, “Yeah, you’re a total weirdo for that. What a one track mind.”[break][break]

The composure in his expression cracks after seconds. “No, I don’t think that’s strange. You know yourself—I think that’s honestly pretty cool.”[break][break]

He grimaces playfully. “Do I look like I can argue?”[break][break]

His head tilts with a belated thought, though. “Oh if it’s like an internet troll, I’m not too shabby.” He lets out a breath of laughter.[break][break]

Tucked away behind a screen, rather than pushed to the front of a courtroom. Totally different energies.

“Oh! Is it for a masters or a PhD?” he’s considered jumping back into the academia flow, but for the time being, he’s enjoying the break from coursework to focus on his own…ah, portfolio. So to speak.[break][break]

It’s not like Emerson can’t feel and register the weight of Caden’s stare. The almost mocking air of it—it’s nothing new. In fact, that sense of being an outsider has always followed him around.[break][break]

Something he’s only just starting to shed his skin on in small measure.[break][break]

But no, he acutely feels the fact that he’s not in on the joke. Whatever the joke may be, though it feels like it’s the other’s personal amusements more than anything greater.[break][break]

Em’s self-consciousness doubles down on itself as a result. He shrinks in on himself. Both hands holding onto his glass as he diminishes himself, red-faced and flustered.[break][break]

Somehow, Caden makes small talk an even more harrowing endeavor.[break][break]

His heart skitters in his chest as the question is turned back on him and he nods. Maybe a little too quickly—after the drinks he had earlier, it feels like his brain is rattling around in his skull. Dizzying. [break][break]

“Yeah, since it’s close to my apartment, errrrr yeah. Easy choice.”

Whatever response he was anticipating, it wasn’t the one he received. His brows rose in surprise at her avid response, and sheepish color flooded his face again. Slowly but surely, though, he began to nod along.[break][break]

“Right, it shouldn’t be difficult to monitor. So long as it’s put somewhere less noticeable, right?” He pointed to one of the corners where the wall met the ceiling of the shrine. “Like, that’s a common placement but way too obvious. They’ll just vandalize it too.”[break][break]

He nodded again, “Yeah, I mean I work in tech sooo..” Plus in some other…less than upstanding citizen type dealings. But he didn’t go around actively proclaiming that bit.[break][break]

“They waste no time…” he muttered as he followed after Penny. Admittedly, he’d leave the confrontation itself to her. He had all the intimidation and toughness factor of a squeaky toy.

Within moments, and after a little finagling, his phone is hooked up to the computer and his software is copying over the text. He can go back and describe the images later. Or maybe he can pull them from where they bury themselves in his phone data. At least the first choice is an easy one— B.

He must make a better door than a window, because as he watches on, still standing over Niola Winchester, illeana reyes’s gengar phases right through him. He swears it makes his phone screen flicker, but he’s too focused on the chill that shivers through him. The surreal sensation of it. Actually, all of this is surreal. So it’s good he’ll have the footage later for posterity.[break][break]

It’s all so unreal.[break][break]

The mega gengar’s work does the trick, and though he doesn’t join in the fray again with his own porygon-z like Yui Fujin Silph does (and the move is impressive, to say the least,) as Niola attempts to gather her wits again, Glitch flits around her, forming a DEFENSE CURL that looks to eliminate weak spots to avoid a repeat of any possession.[break][break]

Em, meanwhile, offers his free hand to help her stand should she choose to take it. “You alright? That was- uh. Well, something happened, that’s for sure.” But to explain it right then in the moment might be counter-intuitive.

A small smile settled on his face, pleased that the riolu seemed happy with the offering.[break][break]

“Oh, alright. Seems…easy enough,” he replied slowly, brows furrowing a bit as to why he was pulled from the volunteer list for that sort of task. It wasn’t like he was the most readily adept fighter or something.[break][break]

He was better at quick fixes and low physical activity things. Maybe he should specify that next time, because the last thing he wanted to do was be all the way out here and accidentally leave his partner for the day in the lurch because he didn’t know how to ward off disturbers of the peace…or something to that effect.[break][break]

Penny quickly elaborated, though, and some of that tension eased. “Ah, good. Er, I thought it might be worse than that…” Teens? Okay, well maybe he couldn’t hold his water with them either, but maybe he’d have, like, a sliver more of a shot.[break][break]

At the suggestion of tech, however, Emerson perked. His eyes lifted to meet hers, brightening–and it was almost like a gear switched. “It might be a little difficult if there’s no power source all the way out here…” he hummed, looking around the shrine and not immediately spying anything. “But you might be able to get a battery operated system running, if someone keeps track and makes sure it stays charged.”

[attr="class","star2"]Given the reputation that this game was rapidly garnering, it felt a little warranted to do more research on it. And by research, Em meant firsthand experience. He’d already had the odd encounter of his personal connections popping up in-game, but how far down the rabbit hole did all of the data collection go?[break][break]

Apparently far enough to drag megalopolans into the mix. He dropped his chopsticks as he stared at the phone screen in front of him. He’d done his research of course. He’d never personally encountered Velmos. But he sure had done enough digging to recognize his face. “Hm..”[break][break]

Having developed just enough connections as of late to warrant a [yes], he tapped it without a second thought. No way he was just handing this game free names, though.

“I’ll hold you to that,” he says with a laugh, nudging James with his own elbow.[break][break]

Is this a testament to his own ability to socialize, despite his shyness and initially crippling awkwardness? It’s probably more because of how amiable the other is, though. Em isn’t usually so easily adept.[break][break]

It’s still a bit of a wonderment.[break][break]

“Oh. I agree. I don’t like them fried as much.” Well, he’ll still eat them, but still. He’s glad the preference lines up. He helps load up the dumplings and leaves James to the last part.[break][break]

Content to wait, Em sets a short timer on his phone, and pulls himself up to sit on the counter opposite again. His legs kick out lightly as he picks up his coffee again. “Soooo… you said you’re working on a dissertation?”

Em’s brows furrow, face twisting up in a look of consideration that bordered on goofy. “No exactly. I’ve always been good with tech and stuff, experimenting with it and building. But I don’t think I really knew ‘til a couple years ago.”[break][break]

aka when he figured out he was good at the not so legal stuff too.[break][break]

His nose wrinkles and he takes a drink. “Definitely knew I didn’t want to do what my dad does, though. Lawyer. He put me on the career track, made me do all the club activities.”[break][break]

Maybe he should have just gone home. There’s no way that this person actually wants to endure time with him. And yet, the person he’s managed to make a fool of himself in front of multiple times now doesn’t wave him away.[break][break]

“Like…night time…hours..?” he offers hesitantly in response.[break][break]

Even just observing Caden, he can feel his face heat up. He doesn’t know why the doctor is looking at him like this, like he actually has something interesting to say.[break][break]

Or is…appealing in some capacity.[break][break]

He knows that he’s not. Emerson hasn’t ever considered himself interesting a day in his life. He likes interesting things, and keeps interesting hobbies, sure, but he himself isn’t anything out of the ordinary.[break][break]

He’s just a walking bundle of nerves and awkward mannerisms.[break][break]

His fingers turn his glass back and forth, anxious twist. Hyper-aware. “So, uhm…do you like…coming here?”

It seemed they were getting off on the wrong foot a bit. At least in the case of Penny’s riolu. His own remained unbothered, but didn’t make an effort to alleviate the other’s irritations. Emerson shrugged at the apology.[break][break]

“We all have our, um, our moments. You know?”[break][break]

Hm…what did he do when he was feeling grumpy? Jamming his hand into his pocket, he found a candy treat and offered it to the disgruntled Rio. If a snack didn’t help, Em didn’t know what would.[break][break]

“Soooo..” he started, dragging the word out as his glance shifted beyond their small group. “What exactly is it we’re doing today?”
