If there was anywhere that Colton genuinely enjoyed exploring, it had to be New Mauville. The complex, despite teeming with wild Pokémon, was equally bursting at the seams with old tech in the older parts. Every time he ventured into the depths, he always came out with some interesting bit or bob that he could tinker with back in his lab or, if he was really lucky, an entire blueprint to pour over. He often dreamed about what wonders lay within. The source code for Porygon Z's upgrade? An broken up appliance Rotom had an affinity for? The broken down remnants of someone attempting to create a heretofore unknown artificial Pokémon? That was what New Mauville represented to him. At least, so long as GMH didn't confiscate anything he found when he'd come back to the parts they had repaired, but usually flashing his HBIC I.D. made things work out.

However, things were different these days. Team Rocket were skulking about in just about every crevice Hoenn had and he would be naïve to think that his haven was safe from their presence. The place was a verifiable goldmine to anyone who knew what they were looking for and Colton had no doubt that Rocket had more than its fair share of salvagers and tech experts ready to comb the place over.

Still, he couldn't let that potential threat keep him from delving into the old power plant. There were some old vaults he'd managed to crack the codes on that he was excited to open up to see what lay within. It helped that it was also in an area where he had yet to see another soul grace, whether by chance or by it simply being too out of the way for GMH to send someone down to retrieve what may lay there.

Or, that's what he thought. At least until he saw a blond man in a leather jacket and a black mask scrounging around.

Colton froze, his eyes wide behind his glasses while one hand fumbled for the Pokéballs on his belt, his fingers struggling to wrap around the smooth surface as they grew slick with sweat. Perhaps it was wrong to assume the worst of the other man and there certainly were some rather unique individuals with very peculiar styles of dress in Hoenn, but there was still something deeply off putting about someone skulking about where most wouldn't venture.

"H-Hey! W-What are you doing back here?" Colton piped up, brandishing his Pokéball in the most threatening way he could manage. He was a Leaguer, after all, and if this guy was part of Team Rocket, then it was his duty to try and put a stop to whatever schemes he could be manifesting.

Colton thumbed through the volumes on the shelf, trying to find one particular book on chemistry. A recent experiment was needing a particularly sensitive mixture not often used and he'd heard through a colleague that a store in Slateport had a copy of said book on its shelves. However, the search had not proven itself to be so fruitful, as the owner, as kind as they had been about it, didn't have an exact shelf spot for the book, leaving Colton to dig about to try and find it.

His thumb brushed over each leather bound volume, his lips silently forming each's name as he ran through a mental checklist until, finally, his finger settled on the very tome he sought. A grin broke out on his face as he pulled the book from the shelf, already turning away from the bookshelf as he opened the book and flipped through the pages. "Finally. I can get back to the lab and -" he started, though his excited muttering was swiftly interrupted as he sharply turned a corner and walked directly into another person.

Colton stumbled back, nearly tripping over himself before his footing settled. "Ah! I'm so terribly sorry about that, ma'am!" he babbled, bowing to her as apologetically as he could manage.

Colton tapped his foot nervously as he waited, his head turning at the slightest noise both in hope that his guide had arrived and in fear that he was going to be jumped by a wild Pokémon. But what did he have to be nervous about? He had both Burnout and Arti, both quite strong Pokémon in their own right. They would be able to defend him against any wild threats no problem. And then there was always the subject of Ferrous...

Colton pulled Ferrous' Pokéball from his waist and looked at it. Compared to his other two Pokémon, the little Beldum was nowhere close to being battle ready and he dreaded the idea of tossing the Pokémon headfirst into danger. And yet, without that experience, it had little chance to ever reach its full potential, that of a mighty Metagross. He had seen videos of the Pokémon in battle, an absolutely terrifying force of nature and one he really had no right to say was his partner.

Colton sighed, putting the Pokéball back onto his belt when a loud squeaking noise reached his ears, jumping in surprise as his head snapped towards the source. He hesitated, frozen in place before Arti bumped into his back and sent him stumbling forward. He glared at the Rotom, but continued on anyway, nervously peaking around the corner to see what was probably the strangest site ever. A young woman with green hair, riding high atop a Raticate that was chasing after a Persian. He watched in confusion for a moment, only to suddenly raise his hand in a wave.

"Hello."

It wasn't often Colton got out, even so far as going down to the local shop to restock his fridge. If he could spend his life toiling over some mechanical odd or end, he would do it without hesitation. Which ultimately begged the question as to why he signed on with the League in the first place.

Truthfully, Colton couldn't very well define why. Likely, it was some strange combination of his own curiosity over the nature of the conflict between the League and Team Rocket, some sense of justice against the crimes Team Rocket committed, the logical acknowledgement that a Rocket victory would interrupt what he was passionate about in life, and maybe even some desire buried deep down inside of him to escape from the little bubble he called "life." All that ultimately lead him to coming all the way out to Rusturf Tunnel near Rustboro to bolster his rather meager team of Pokemon, as well as grant his current group some much needed experience out in the field.

Yet, his confidence at facing areas he rarely, if ever, delved into wavered all the same. So what better way than artificially increase that confidence than with a guide, one that was more than familiar with traversing the wilds and collecting the Pokemon that wander about. It truly was a foolproof plan.

So long as she showed up, of course...

"Is this a bad idea, Arti? Maybe we should hunt around Mauville instead of venturing out so far..." Colton muttered as his Rotom floated next to him. Its usual mischievous grin was turned upside down and he swore it rolled its eyes at him. He scoffed. "Don't give me that! You know just as well as I that we've spent more time tinkering with what machines you can possess than actually going out and training!"

Arti only pointed to one particular Pokeball on Colton's waist. He didn't have to look down to know which one his Rotom was indicating.

"Stop being right, you dumb ghost..."

Pokemon certainly were strange creatures. And, while Colton admittedly had more of an appreciation for ones that resembled machines, he couldn't deny the research potential in a living loaf of BREAD shaped like a dog. Admittedly, they were rather cute animals that smelled quite nice, which he couldn't very well deny aided in actually dragging him out of his house to capture one of the many swarming Daschbun.

Colton observed the playful pastries for a short while, his gaze going between the Fidoughs, Daschbuns, and Arti that idly floated next to him. "I wonder...Fidough appears to just be an unbaked Dashbun...Perhaps combined with a Rotom that has merged with the oven contraption it's so fond of, could that aid in their evolution..." he said, scratching his chin thoughtfully, only to receive a blast of water to the back of his head that knocked his glasses off.

"You've made your point."

It fascinates me to no end that Pokemon and technology seem to merge together so easily, whether they take the form ancient golems, robots of another era, to a certain degree, to even a combustion engine. Rotom, as a species, has almost been entirely repurposed to create countless smart devices that surpass artificial intelligence by leaps and bounds.[break][break]

How long before Pokemon begin to find themselves bonded with technology and robotics on a more regular basis? How long before the line between living creature and machinery grows so vague, there simply stops being a distinction? What sort of consequences would such a reality create?[break][break]

That was the mantra a young Colton always told himself as he tinkered away in his bedroom, breaking down and rebuilding contraption after contraption to find out what made them tick. It was easy for him, as natural as he could breath. With machines, the parts all had their place, a spot where everything clicked together and worked.[break][break]

Now, obviously, things wore down, as they always do. Parts broke, joints wore down, oil needed to be replaced. All things someone like him could easily get a hold of and bring things back into working order.[break][break]

But, people… People aren’t so simple. When they stopped working, it wasn’t so easy to replace the parts that broke. Things didn’t always fit together in a way that just made sense. There was always the question of “why.” Why do people do what they do? What makes them tick? What decisions would lead to someone inflicting the kind of harm that Team Rocket was capable of? Machines make sense. People don’t. But that doesn’t mean Colton can’t try to help all the same.[break][break]
