They’ve got their walls, but I’d rather not be nearby if they decide to crumble.” Given the turbulent chaos the region was falling into, it wouldn’t surprise him if the sea coming to crash against the city had been superheated by the desolate sun. Death approaches. Energy condenses and compresses into an all-devouring cannon, intent on swallowing the warfront like a serpent swallowing the sun.[break][break]

It’s almost nostalgic. Reminiscent enough of a lost future that it makes Alba sick to his stomach, that it twists a grin onto his face.[break][break]

“Is THIS the best you’ve got? You’re nothing more… than a cheap imitation.” Flashing red lights trying desperately to reach that deep vermillion. Scrap metal that was far more brittle than that violet skeleton.[break][break]

Young flowers sprout in the desert, mingling with priam conrad’s, unfurling from Leech Seeds scattered by the dreamer’s Whimsicott; the will to keep living in the face of desolation.

When he sees parker jones, Alba instinctively massages the back of his head, as the ghost of the S.P.E.C.T.R.A. Gauntlet haunts him again. It turned out that making your Pokémon let out an ungodly loud screech, then immediately tripping over and eating shit on a rock, was an incredibly efficient way of giving yourself a migraine sent up from the depths of hell.[break][break]

That migraine is long gone, of course, but the weather (what a weak word that was to describe this) caused by super-ancient gods wasn’t any better. The heat haze meets rolling clouds, feeding off each other until the humidity makes the air feel more like water.[break][break]

If he thinks about it a little too much, it reminds him of the suffocating feeling of being imprisoned in the Penitentiary. So he doesn’t.[break][break]

“You good to go?” The grunt just tries to power on instead, the sweat making him look like some kind of bedraggled animal.

The constant battle wears Alba down to the bone, like the desert sands slowly drowning the ruins of a lost civilisation. Just a little further… He was reaching his limit, but the Rocket scientist still wanted to see the giant fall. He couldn’t back out now, with the end in sight…[break][break]

Lightning floods the air, creating a twofold storm of sand and electricity. Tastes like metal on the back of his tongue. His Whimsicott gathers moonlight in her hands, condensing it before firing it towards the slowly rusting steel golem. The last few embers of Terastal energy wink out, leaving Alba’s surroundings as dull as a tomb. And still, Registeel trudges on, even as its systems begin to fail it.[break][break]

“Fascinating…” That tenacity, pointed towards some unknowable goal. Those flickering lights, ever blinking in an long-dead language. The loud drones of a machine that refuses to stop working.[break][break]

But it must, and it will. Adrenaline fills the scientists veins as he snaps his fingers, commanding his Whimsicott to unleash a Giga Drain on the lumbering giant. Over, and over again, with gritted teeth as things come down to the wire…

If the ashes of what they had burned down didn’t reach out and choke them before then.[break][break]

Of course, it was a worthless hypothetical. Even if Rocket could have been dismantled so simply, neither half of them was willing to take the steps to do such a thing. They had shackled themselves, burning up as the Team soared through the atmosphere.[break][break]

“Currently? I’ve been looking into Shadow Pokémon with Cillian Quinn, if you remember the collective dream. The… other collective dream.” The dream that, for Alba, had been cast in shadow and flame. “Yes, I’d imagine so. It wouldn’t hurt to expand our sample size a little, perhaps compare Musharna against Shadow Pokémon of other origin… If our experiences line up, though, I don’t see why our Pokémon’s experiences wouldn’t as well.” As the gossamer nightmares fade away, Alba’s voice reels back into the kind of tone you’d expect from a scientist. He walks over to Musharna, giving it a few pats on the head as he thought.[break][break]

“I think with this, we can rule out Ultra Space as the common thread, but perhaps… Could it be something to do with Pokémon themselves, rather than something external?” Something inherent to Pokémon that causes a change when unusual conditions are met…

The war against Registeel felt less like fighting a Pokémon, and more like fighting a continent; a sprawling landmass that refused to yield no matter what. But there, in its adamantine armour; a chink that had grown into a faultline.[break][break]

For a moment, it almost seems like the titan has given up. But no; it swims with unspeakable rage, the anger of a machine that cannot fulfil its task. Simply the whining of gears that are being forced to stand still, instead of turning endlessly.[break][break]

“Then, Whimsicott… let’s send this all crashing down.” A brilliant verdant light, and Whimsicott emerges bathed in Terastal energy, dreams of flora suffusing its form.[break][break]

“Tera Blast!” Jade light lances out, reaching for the tectonic fractures in Registeel’s body to try and break it apart.

Ruination continues to march forward on steel legs. Slowly and surely the horde of trainers wear it down, but the titan fights as fiercely as ever. The bursts of Grassy Terrain against the desert brings to mind a war between life and death. And at this critical point in the battle…[break][break]

A spotlight shines on Yuina Higashi, flaring out despite the raging sandstorm. A sufficiently dramatic attack requires sufficiently dramatic lighting, right?

Bump in the night

Alba has not really considered whether Cassidy is an interesting person. Their paths have had little chance to intersect until now, and his work demanded his attention on things a little closer to home.[break][break]

Of course if he had to think about it, he would assume much the same for his ghost-busting partner. He wasn’t one of Rocket’s Head Scientists, and he barely stopped to consider that someone might know him from the list of names that had briefly and forever been swallowed up by the Rusted Sword and Shield.[break][break]

“A painful death in the cafeteria? Is the food really that bad?” It’s truly the worst possible joke he could have told in the moment, but Alba tells it with such a straight face — pondering hand to chin and everything — that it almost seems as if he’s genuinely considering that as a hypothesis.[break][break]

“...Well, I don’t know much, to be honest,” Alba replies, taking a glance at their surroundings. “And if Dusknoir knows anything, it’s not sharing.”[break][break]

The reaper sits in the Poké Ball at his waist, biding its time.[break][break]
