Exodus

How exactly did Alba Evovae, chronic non-exerciser, stack up against the trials of a man who’s entire line of work was to be built more like a predator than a human being? The answer might (not) surprise you.[break][break]

The pushups were truly dismal. He’d gone into them with practically no understanding of the form, almost as if the last time he’d even tried to do one was a decade ago. The pullups were better in the sense that his movements were (a little bit) practiced, but he also only just had the upper strength to actually do one.[break][break]

As for the treadmills—[break][break]

Actually, he wasn’t horrible on the treadmills. It would be child's play for someone like Zev Harcourt to catch up to him, but a substantial amount of exposure therapy over the course had at least given him that much.[break][break]

There’s a solid few seconds pause after Zev’s question where Alba chugs the rest of his water, then wipes away altogether way too much sweat from his brow.[break][break]

“Yeah, that was pretty easy.” The breathless voice makes up for the straight face he wears when he says that.

What was a Pokémon, truly? What fundamental essence defined them? There were normal wild beasts, like Purrloin and Herdier. There were things formed from ghosts and grudges, like Yamask and Banette. And there were things forged by human hands, like Claydol and Golurk. They were so varied, it seemed impossible to say they were all related, and yet even those with the most esoteric of origins were linked together through undeniable rules and laws.[break][break]

One such law was that Pokémon were stronger than humans. That scorching beam of alien light was the perfect example of that.[break][break]

“Careful, now.” A snap of Alba’s fingers, and Leech Seeds sprout near Tempest Quinn as Registeel’s onslaught comes his way, blooming in the Grassy Terrain to form a makeshift shield. He wasn’t at this battle as a Rocket, but it never hurt to try and score a few good guy points with a Beast, right?

Sleeping In Shadows

That truth is written in an abstract of tableau. Musharna’s mist spreads across the lab, painting the surroundings in hues and pink. Within the haze, parts darken and congeal together, and from these spots arise phantoms and spectres haunting the world. A broken heart, a missing keepsake, a jeering crowd. Fears for the future, hatred towards the world, all the sludge gathering at the base of human consciousness… Just as soon as each figure comes into vague shape, they collapse— no, they drain away, sucked back into Musharna like water pouring out a sink.[break][break]

“So, there you have it,” Alba says. His voice is a touch quieter, as if he’s afraid his words will break the scene unfolding before them. No poison from Ultra Space, no radiation from Tera Crystals. Musharna had dreamt a thousand bad dreams, and those nightmares had left a long shadow.[break][break]

“Well well… Aren’t you an interesting specimen.” One of the cousins to @howard pet machine blots out the sky. He had been too slow to see the other giants that had taken over the desert, but at least he would get the chance to see this one in action. Red light eyes blink furiously, deep metallic rings accompanying each shift… Was that how it communicated?[break][break]

It also communicated in oversized, swinging fists. Debris litters the air, turning it suffocating. In response, Alba lets out Whimsicott, who scatters its own stun spores to the wind, trying to sabotage Registeel’s onslaught, if only by a little.[break][break]

What sound did a colossus make, when it tumbled towards the ground? He wanted to hear that with his own eyes.

He doesn’t fully get this kind of struggle. The need to repent, the need to slough off one’s sins. But he can’t exactly say that to her, can he? Especially not after she had made her distaste for the likes of Rockets so patently clear.[break][break]

A Toxel emerges from the growth, lapping away at a forming puddle. It doesn’t have to worry about good and evil, just how best to follow its instincts and foster the next generation of its kind. Like a blessing, like a curse, Alba drags it away from that mindless place, forcing it into humanity.[break][break]

The air felt heavy and somber, as expected from a funeral, but in a way that was different to a typical wake. Perhaps there was sorrow from the Megalopolans, but there was something else — something more bitter, perhaps — coming from the gathered members of Rocket.[break][break]

Alba doesn't look away from Velmos’ blinding altar as he responds to THEO BECKETT. He speaks with the kind of softness usually reserved for speaking well of the dead at gatherings like these, though he has nothing at all to say towards the cadaver that even after death managed to stir the waters so.[break][break]

“No, I’m sure we won't have the time to commemorate everyone we lose.” Alba’s funeral, at least, would be the chirping of crickets and the buzzing of flies that gather round his corpse. Maybe if he asked nicely, they'd screw a tiny nameplate to one of the microscopes in the submarine labs.[break][break]

“But if the unthinkable happens and you die, Underboss Beckett, I’m sure we could find a nice burning boat to send you out to sea in.” Because that was the way of things. The limited mourning war bestowed would be given to the best pieces on the board first, and the leftovers trickle down to the rabble. Even in this very room, it was General Velmos who had been deemed worthy of a funeral, not any of the other Megalopolans who had fallen in battle.

He’d seen some of the truly fascinating numbers Slayte had to deal with when he was helping with some of the digital aspects of the job, but his eyes had glazed over enough that he’d forgotten all of the details.[break][break]

Of course, astronomy had also been chock-full of numbers and equations. If push came to shove, he could wear that hat of Howard’s. A part of him would just die in doing so.[break][break]

“I understand… though I guess the two things are a little more entwined for me.” Just a little. If he really put his mind to it, he could peel away Rocket’s thorns and truly become Dr. Evovae, the astronomer living in Mossdeep.[break][break]

Was the taste of human flesh so good that it was worth waging war over? Maybe there was some deviation in the Megalopolan digestive system that turned it into ambrosia. Not that Alba knew what human flesh tasted like in the first place. But maybe it was worth—[break][break]

…Nomi had said to voice anything that crossed his mind, but… those kind of experiments into cannibalism seemed like something best kept locked away in his private thoughts. His… hopefully private thoughts.[break][break]

“It’d be a lot easier for us if they do…” Was the cleaner, more family-friendly version of his thought process the white-haired man decided to go with. And before he can think overmuch about comparisons between Slowpoke Tails and human limbs, the simulation skips like a record, pixels unravelling into a fresh new scenario…[break][break]

Once upon a time, a king had clawed its way out of a dying world. The ink and parchment peeled away from the spine as it crawled, ruining the memory beyond all recognition.
