Nobody bothered the silent, serious sam of a trainer/bodyguard/gang member/host/gym trainer. He noticed the sygna suits on the little girl and a guy, both using smaller Pokemon. If Shalin Nariya's was any indication of what they could do, they weren't to be underestimated. Not that he had any intention of winning. Of course, he was going to try his best, but this was more for practice than anything for Samurai, since they never raced before. The region top champion used a Wailord of all Pokemon...even if minimized, it was still huge. Beyond those two odd choices, there was also an Aegislash. On the surface, he could see using the Pokemon as a surfboard. But the underwater sections? That could be difficult for the trainer.

Soon, the warning came to the racers to be ready. Latching himself onto the special saddle for the Golosipod, Raju was ready for the dive. Samurai likewise cracked her claws and was ready as well. With the announcment, off they went! As soon as they dove in, Raju was surprised that the current was at their backs...good thing Samurai was quite fast, and had the reaction time to deal with obstacles. The buggy swordsPokemon swam with her powerful legs and main claws, easily brute forcing their way through the waves, hoping for an early lead.

Josh laughed when he asked. One of his first challengers...was an Elite Four member?! Was that even allows? Evidently it was. Shocking to say the least. No wonder he mentioned it...probably the most stand out match of all the ones he had where he didn't knock out a single Pokemon. The gym leader soon said he was good to go, and Raju nodded. So was he, and Big Bert. Getting up, they moved to the last match of the day, ground.

Taking their positions, the blonde tossed out Rollin the Cyclizar and Big Bert, the overly large Blaze Breed Paldean Tauros that raced. Josh sent out a Pyroar and an Espeon. Well, that was terrifying. A super powerful Psychic-type. He did not expect to win this match. When the word go was announced, BB didn't waste time. The big bull charged with Flame Charge, straight at the Espeon, hoping to get the jump on it. Rollin likewise used Quick Attack to zoom past Big Bert to try to smack the Eeveelution in the face and distract it from using a powerful Psychic type attack. Strong as BB was, even he wouldn't be able to handle that kind of strength...

This was Raju's first official race. He hadn't even done a race as a gym trainer yet. A couple of battles, but not a race. Not even enough time to teach Samurai Aqua Jet. But...this could still be fantastic practice. And who knows, maybe Samurai would learn something. Clad in only swim shorts, the blonde waved at the crowd somewhat shyly and broodingly. He wasn't a man of words, but of action. And he was a scrawny little shit...no one would tell from a glance that he was actually a pretty good fighter, let alone a member of a gang. Oh well, physique aside, he sat on top of Samurai in his spot.

Some contestants were visiting with each other, some ribbing and smack talk. Raju kept to himself though. His Golosipod stood menacingly with main claws/arms crossed coolly. He'd already gained some reputation for being one of the strongest Mauville Gym Trainers there, and had quite the welcoming committee. There was two others there as well, along with Josh himself. And a heck of an array of people and Pokemon. From Gym Leaders to the Top Champion himself...Raju was a tad intimidated...not that you could tell.

Yeah, that makes sense. People could also lie about how strong they actually are just to get an easy win and an easy badge. He just nodded at it. It was a simple enough thing to understand. Josh did confirm that it was more the latter. Maybe he should try to get one himself. He didn't like having to rely on someone else's buddies. Maybe he could face one and figure out good strats to take one down. Josh did admit a loss during the Champion Assessment, against a Callan Young. But that was also as a challenger. "What about as a gym leader, did you have a challenger with such a good strategy and used the rules to their full advantage that you didn't knock out a single Pokemon?"

He was kind of curious if there was an up and coming trainer that really caught Josh's eye, and took him down with such skill. Champion Assessments were supposed to be difficult. So that didn't surprise him too much.

Shalin took Typhon up on the offer of help. And the gal seemed excited at the prospect. "He's my main ground battler, a Paldean Tauros, Blaze Breed specifically. He's always up for any test of strength." He showed her a picture of him on his phone. It was a bit of a funny one, with Brownie the Paldean Wooper on BB's head. He was in solid agreement on it not being right now. Jigawatt squaked, and unleashed a Thunderbolt. Turning, he saw a Corvisquire avoid it and go for a Fury Attack. Only to get smacked by an Aqua Tail. And zapped by an Electro Ball. Taking out a Pokeball, he threw it. After this one, he'd be done. Flying types weren't a bad haul. With three new flyers, that should give him enough of a variety. Two more water types were great, but the day was soon to be done...and he better head back. "I'm sure we can make that rodeo happen. But I think it's time for me to head back." With a final nod and maybe even a handshake, and showing her his phone number, he'd depart on Typhon. She...was certainly an interesting one...

It was such a wierd thing. Raju got it, you have to give the trainer a chance. This was a sport. But then again...the real world wasn't so nice. He half wondered if this kind of competition was really worth it. This conversation did bring to light what kind of metric he could use to potentially gauge a trainer's skill. "Badge number doesn't always mean anything either. Is there not some other metric to get an accurate read?" Not all skilled trainers did the gym circuit right away. Granted, if they knew what moves the Pokemon knew, maybe they could guess what kind of strategy they may try.

"So only use the special ones against trainers you think can handle them...or if they're using some themselves." But if they're super rare, why worry about it? Just use a strategy to shut them down mostly. It wasn't just split second decisions that they were testing...right? "Have you ever lost a match where you didn't knock out a single Pokemon?" Clean sweeps happened. He'd been a victim and the victor on that end. But did his employer have those same experiences?

Ah, so she did know a bit more. After he had captured the Palifin, he saw the Sharpedo, that Shalin decided to antagonize. Sadly, he couldn't keep a good eye on what was happening. It looked fun though. Much like how he enjoyed it when Big Bert gave him fits and tried to buck him. Anyways, she ended getting bucked off, dropping a pokeball and capturing it. Kind of funny. Okay, Raju had to stifle a small giggle. The entire thing did scare off a Feebas. Oh well. His smaller than average Gyarados swam over to where she landed and offered to help her to land. Whether she took it or not was up to her. "You could give Big Bert a run for his money. If that was any indication." He may stick around only for a little bit more, just to see if any others of interest arrive.

The gym leader agreed, heading back to the lobby. More specifically the waiting area, where he'd missed the water jug. Getting a couple cups of water, Raju sat down, with Josh following soon after. Then the man started to speak up again. Really special Pokemon? The blonde shrugged. Any Pokemon can be taken down. Even the legends. Still might not be a bad idea, in case he saw any of these super rare Pokemon. But still. "Doesn't a challenger submits what Pokemon they'll use? Forewarned means you can choose the right Pokemon for the job. Er...well, provide a good challenge. We're not supposed to completely body challengers, just give them a good challenge, but not out of their realm of estimated strength." Kind of like how some sports were like. Refilling his two cupsm, he continued to rehydrate. This next round could be interesting...with Rollin and Big Bert...

She wasn't entirely sure how the suit worked or built herself. Shalin just gave a guess and how it felt. Interesting. Something to be aware of in the future. Then she went into a little more detail, like how it was similar to being an Avatar. Or at least what most people would think being one would be like. Just without the world bending powers. And also caught a Pokemon. "So you're not entirely sure. Just estimated guesses. Something that the League keeps pretty confidential?" That would make sense. Looking over at his bait, he noticed something that he only saw in his...well, not homeland, but probably close enough. A Palafin. While they were busy eating, Raju threw a dive ball at it, hopefully catching it by surprise enough for a capture.

The pick up and drop was successful, and BB dropped like a ton of bricks. Once the dust settled, it showed the big guy knocked out. Well, they gave a good showing. Just not a good enough of one. Returning his beast, Raju walked up to the lad and offered a handshake. It was a good match after all. Better than a lot of his losses anyways. So he wasn't disappointed in this performance. After doing the handshake, and nodding to his opponent, the blonde walked off to get his beasty treatment. Though it wouldn't be until much later that maybe he should have told Alexei that not all Paldean Tauros was that large. But oh well, maybe he'll find out eventually.

VCT: Raju vs Alexei

The Rock Slide actually stopped Big Bert in his tracks. Stumbling off to one side after quite literally running into a thrown rock, more bad news came. The pretty bird closed in and latched onto the Tauros, and picked up him up! Big Bert started to struggle, horns glowing red with Raging Bull, just trying to get out of its grasp. The Bravairy was barely able to heft him up, but it was pretty iffy if it'll be strong enough to get a struggling BB up and off the ground enough to complete its attack. Raju hoped not, but Tauros was really weak right now....

VCT: Raju vs Alexei

The Tauros's Raging Bull hit, forcing the birb down. But then it used another super effective attack. A Rock Slide. There was a chance of flinching with that attack too...assuming BB endures it. Still, the bull undeterred, charging again with Flame Charge to get close and pound it again. Problem was dodging enough of them so it didn't hurt him that match. Big Bert wasn't known for dodging, just plowering through whatever is thrown his way. Not always the best plan or idea. Especially when the attacks were super effective ones. Great on Alexei for giving his bird something to defend itself against other birds though.
