She stifled a small laugh behind her hand at the way he jumped up in surprise. How funny, to think someone as small and unobtrusive as her could startle a man like him.[break][break]

"Well, it's why we're here! For tours and things like that, you know." She clasped her hands behind her back, leaning forward to examine the Aerodactyl one last time, before turning to him. "I wouldn't say I know absolutely everything, but it comes pretty close."[break][break]

She gestured for him to follow her, his compliment about her memory inviting a self-conscious laugh.[break][break]

"Actually, I have a terrible memory in general... I think it comes from having to remember everything for work. But, I think a lot of people are like you, to be honest. They're happy with knowing as much as they need to know about Pokemon, if that makes sense."

The pink-haired girl sheepishly waved farewell to her would-be date, turning her attention to an equally uncertain man across from her.[break][break]

Was he angry with her? He probably was. Oh, Arceus, why was she always like this? Every step forward led to five steps back. Stupid, stupid, stupid Marianne.[break][break]

Fingers fiddled with the hem of her sweater as she leaned against the counter, toying with an unraveling thread as she searched for a way to salvage things.[break][break]

"That was embarrassing," she finally blurted out, struggling to find a better thing to say and failing.

Oh. Oh, no. Marianne's blood ran cold at the sight of the Megalopolans. She'd read entirely too much about that alien species -- about how they devoured humans without so much as a second thought.[break][break]

A terrible scream almost ripped out of her, but thankfully, Rhys's quick-thinking put a stop to that with a single finger on her lips to remind her to stay still.[break][break]

It was her Klefki, her brave little Klefki, that decided on how to save them from its inevitable pursuit. Without a second thought, the metallic Pokemon flitted out of sight, chiming out a METAL SOUND to distract the zombified Megalopolan towards the unusual noise. Nimble as she was, the Klefki was able to circle back without being seen, evidently pleased at her own cleverness.[break][break]

Marianne trembled and shook at the sight of the strange thing, and only when it had shambled past the corner did she allow herself to breathe.[break][break]

"What... what was wrong with it?" she whispered hoarsely, turning to Rhys Collins imploringly. "Something seemed off with it. Like... it was sick, maybe?"[break][break]

There was something so terribly wrong with its eyes.

"I did," she confessed, laughing a bit in disbelief at her own behavior. "Would you believe me if I said I beat two Elite Four during it?"[break][break]

"Although it was a very casual event, if I'm to be honest," she continued, embarrassed a bit at having over-stated her accomplishments. "So that doesn't mean much. I don't know that I'd be good at training something as fierce-natured as a Zeraora."[break][break]

She fiddled with the laminated menu before settling on a half-soup, half-salad special, opting for a specialty grilled cheese sandwich with chicken noodle. It was cold outside, and the thought of both items was a pleasant one.[break][break]

Dating apps were a perfectly reasonable solution for an upcoming lonely Palentine's Day. This was what Marianne told herself, and consequently what Neffatari Nzingha insisted over and over when Marianne tried to anxiety-spiral herself out of going on a date with a complete stranger.[break][break]

What was the worst thing that could happen if she went to Meowth's Mischief on ninth? Maybe he'd be rude! Maybe he'd be terrible![break][break]

(Or maybe he'd be wonderful and she'd be oh-so-terribly disappointing. Like usual.)[break][break]

None of that defeatist talk! Chin up, Marianne! she willed herself, balling her hands into little determined fists at her sides as she inhaled deeply outside the bar, preparing herself to go in. A large exhale left her as she released all the tension in her shoulders, the door swinging open as she attempted to walk in with what she hoped was a casual air.[break][break]

"Hi there," she said to the man at the counter, beaming. "Are you Klaus, perhaps?"[break][break]

He wasn't. But in her defense, this man had the right hair color.

Ohhh, what had she gotten herself into? Marianne had gotten kind of cocky after that whole Vital City Tournament business. Beat two Elite Four and suddenly you think you're an ace trainer, don't you? she chastised herself as she glanced around the ruined city with her strange companion, regretting everything about this decision.[break][break]

So much for wanting to live out history. Wasn't the point of studying history that she could hide away and read books? Safely? Without being attacked by strange things?[break][break]

"We need a base of some kind, don't we?" she tried to say, but the words came out thickly, her throat uncomfortably dry with fear. Her Klefki hovered around protectively, winking dim light as Marianne caught sight of a distant, abandoned schoolhouse of some kind. "Maybe... maybe that could work?"[break][break]

She looked to the man beside her hopefully, and then slowly began walking, seeing if he'd come with her.

"Welcome to the National Museum of Natural History," Marianne chirped pleasantly, easily falling into the rhythm of her usual greeting as passerby filtered through the grand building. Usually she wasn't one for people, but here she was allowed to babble to her heart's content about her most favorite subjects, and that made each person a potential victim of her excitement.[break][break]

Such as one Noel Parker, who seemed unaware of his unfortunate position to be standing beneath a rather impressive skeleton of an Aerodactyl hanging from the ceiling.[break][break]

"Impressive, isn't it?" she commented, craning her head up to give it a proper look. "Aerodactyl are one of the first documented examples of fossilized Pokemon re-entering the world through the marvels of science. I like to think this one is near the entrance as a reminder of how far we've come, in our understanding of the world around us."[break][break]

She hummed a bit at that, smiling to herself.[break][break]

"I didn't expect you to visit so soon, though! Did you still want that tour?"

Karen Loveface. Oh no. She forgot to correct him, whoops. Uh, it was the thought that counted in these things, right?[break][break]

"She'll be thrilled," Marianne said as she clicked off the phone and stuffed it in her purse. What she didn't ask was how on earth her mother would contact him for drinks, but to be honest, that seemed like it was for the best.[break][break]

Like, her mother was twice MATIAS SILPH's age, and he was probably already batting out of her League to be quite honest.[break][break]

"Do you do stuff like this a lot?" she asked, the 'stuff' unclear if it referred to the tournament or promising drinks with random unseen fans.[break][break]

Then he kindly changed the topic, and she released a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding. Conversations with strangers could be stressful! You never knew if you were stepping on someone's toes on accident or annoying them.[break][break]

"This is Angel. My mother got tired of me losing my keys so she came home with a Klefki. I joke she's my guardian angel, because I would lose everything without her," she explained with a laugh.[break][break]
