Whew! Pokemon battling was tough! Marianne had also flopped for a moment's respite on one of the nearby benches reserved for trainers, utterly drained by the constant attempts to avoid eye contact and, more importantly, to look competent.[break][break]

She'd immediately learned she was good at neither of these things.[break][break]

The Shaymin was what she noticed first, admiring the way the cute little Grass-type nudged about. It might be what accidentally kept her following the other trainer when they both got up, trying to sneak a peek out of the corner of her eye.[break][break]

Shaymin were supposed to be rare, weren't they? She wondered whether or not it'd be worthwhile to pitch doing a Gracidea exhibit at the museum's botanical gardens and to invite trainers with Shaymin to let them frolic there. She'd heard stories that they had an environment of some kind filled with the beautiful flora, and...[break][break]

"Ohmygod!" Marianne jumped up, startled at the brusque way this stranger had snapped her out of her daydreaming. Did he think she was following him?! Had she been following him, totally on accident?! Oh god. Mortified at the possibilities, she immediately attempted to relax her high pitch in tone, clearing her throat. "I mean, oh my god, battling! What a great... idea..."[break][break]

Her Klefki obediently appeared on the field, looking far more prepared than her frantic mistress.

"Ooh, a Sygna Suit? That's so cool! I hear that--wah!" Scientific curiosity drowned out with a sudden exclamation as fiery jaws clamped down on her Klefki, who wriggled about with metallic distress in the much-larger Hydreigon's mouth. The sight sent an unexpected surge of adrenaline and panic surging through her.[break][break]

Gosh, Marianne felt rusty. She hadn't done this since, uh... since P.E. (Pokemon Education) in school? Wow. It had been some time.[break][break]

"Uh, I don't have a Sygna Suit, but Angel and I have known each other a long time. So hopefully this works! Um, Angel! Use... FAIRY WIND!"[break][break]

Frantic jangling preceded the gust of FAIRY WIND that blew right into the dragon's three heads, tickling its snouts with a blast of sparkly pink dust.[break][break]

Wow! Lilycove really had gone all out on their budget this year! Even hiring mascots?! Marianne paused longer than she should to admire the costuming of the trainer on the corner. Maybe she worked for a company willing to provide entertainers for the upcoming 'Fossil Friends' kids exhibit...[break][break]

And then the woman in the costume was speaking to her, and Marianne blinked, embarrassed at being caught in a moment of distraction.[break][break]

"Oh! Right. Battling. Yes. That is the thing... that we are doing... today."[break][break]

Her far-more-graceful Klefki ascended in position to fight, glittering curiously at her opponent.[break][break]

"Chomper, this is Angel!" Oh. She should introduce herself too, shouldn't she? "And I'm Marianne. Are you..." Her voice lowered with uncertainty and hope. "...some kind a mascot? For Silph Co or something?"

"Okay!" Marianne exclaimed, meeting her Klefki's gaze as she attempted to muster enthusiasm for a far-too-draining day of social events. "We are going to find a trainer, and we are going to challenge them on purpose!"[break][break]

Angel the Klefki chimed pleasantly as she shimmered in mid-air, conveying a placating sort of calm agreement to soothe her trainer's nerves.[break][break]

"Okay," Marianne repeated quietly to herself, heart beating rapidly as she glanced around herself. "We just... need to find... someone who looks... normal."[break][break]

A surprisingly difficult task in Hoenn, actually.[break][break]

Suddenly her eyes locked on her target's, and she pointed with a confidence she didn't feel.[break][break]

"Um! I'm Marianne, and I challenge you to a battle!"[break][break]

Hopefully they weren't, like, someone really scary and important.

Why had she signed up for this again? Marianne felt positively overwhelmed by the sheer amount of people at the Vital City Tournament -- something she'd heard her mother complain about, often, during their Friday dinners. 'There are too many trainers loitering outside now,' apparently. 'You can't make eye contact with anyone without them trying to start something!'[break][break]

This was, somewhat, an exaggeration. Marianne had found no one much cared if she made eye contact with them, until she timidly signed up for the event out of curiosity and a fear of missing out more than anything else.[break][break]

Once she'd done so, though, it felt a bit like being thrown into the deep end of Clamperl diving.[break][break]

"Ah, sorry!" Marianne stammered as a man jostled past her, only to make the fatal mistake of staring right into his eyes. "Oh. Oh, no. You want to battle, don't you?" she said with a tiny, resigned sigh as her Klefki entered the field.[break][break]

But why did he look so familiar? Was he famous or something? Or just a frequent visitor of museums...?

"So busy! Too busy," Marianne whined, moving to take a generous chug of her latte, only to squeak a bit in protest at the hot, hot temperature. Ouch.[break][break]

She made a horribly graceless face as her scalded tongue attempted to soothe itself, still rambling, "Just, the masquerade event last year led to a lot of donors interested in events this holiday season. So it's been a lot of that on top of our, y'know, actual museum activities."[break][break]

She'd gotten sick last year with the flu after all the prepping and planning, missing out on the night of glamour and dazzlement. For the best anyway, she'd figured. It wasn't like she was the most graceful dancer anyway.[break][break]

Apparently her boss had a great time, though. Maybe too great of a time? Better not to think about that.[break][break]

"Did you visit any family for the holidays? I went to Lilycove to see my mother." A heavy eyeroll accompanied a sigh. "She's still convinced being single is a terminal disease or something."[break][break]

Her Phanpy dauntlessly waddled forward, trunk curiously reaching for this strangely territorial furry friend to say hello.

"There are too many people here, Zuzu," Marianne sighed deeply after squirming her way through the enormous crowds amassed by the Vital City Tournament. Her tiny Azurill bounced up and down on her shoulder with a chirp of agreement, and Marianne adjusted her slightly askew glasses, peering around for any place that allowed for sitting.[break][break]

If you weren't a battler here, there were precious few places you could actually relax. Unless you were betting, but Marianne hated risk far, far too much to sit at the betting areas.[break][break]

Also, drunk people were really sore losers! And really loud about it.[break][break]

For this reason, and for the reason that boba tea was absolutely delicious, Marianne wriggled her way to a charming little booth set-up with bar stools. Surprisingly, or perhaps unsurprisingly, it had gotten less attention than some of the stalls associated with a local bar crawl.[break][break]

"Your stall is super cute!" Marianne called loudly to Xiura Balfaltin, hoping she could hear her over the din of cheering and shouting during the ongoing battles. "Do you, um, serve anything that baby Pokemon especially like?"[break][break]

Her Azurill hopped onto the stall counter, peering at the boba selection curiously.

"Sorry! Sorry, excuse me!" An anxious voice riddled with apologies carried out with the jingle of the cafe door's bell, resulting in the typical arrival of one hapless Marianne Lovelace as she jostled her way inside. "I'm so late, sorry!"[break][break]

While Neffatari Nzingha could be relied on for her punctuality like clockwork, Marianne Lovelace -- much like a broken clock -- could manage to be right on time about twice a day.[break][break]

With what could only be described as a graceless scoot into her seat, the bespectacled woman sat down across from the researcher and released a pent-up sigh of exhaustion.[break][break]

"Nenet, you wouldn't believe the New Year's Day traffic!" Marianne exclaimed. The tiny Phanpy cradled in her arms squirmed his way out, jumping down to inspect the Yamper underneath the table. "Every Corviknight taxi is taken! And work was so--"[break][break]

Drinks unexpectedly arrived and Marianne blinked, embarrassed as a red blush suffused her already-raw cheeks as she flopped her head on the table in shame. [break][break]

"You already ordered my usual. Oh my gosh. You really are the best, and I am absolutely the worst."
