It was a good question. Gwen's timely dodge put Ameena at ease - she was always content to see evidence that the Ranger could handle herself. Ameena's Gardevoir launched alluring voice at the shadowified witch. [break][break]

"I cannot say why the gods do anything. It is strange and difficult to follow." There were many gods with differing motivations and values, and yet, countless ones had partnered themselves with humans. Surely, they gained something from it. But what value was a human vessel, really, if a god could act out their will on their own? [break][break]

It was a fantastic question. Perhaps, she could get a better understanding from talking to Cillian Quinn about it, but she always got the impression his Avatarship was a particularly special case given Lugia's status as a shadow pokemon. "In any case," she said as Magneton's electrical attack shocked the Delphox unconscious, "we should move quickly before we garner more attention."

She's plotting how to incapacitate Montgomery without further harm as she steps out of the mist and into their battlefield again. Before she can even reach for her gun, she's struck by the sound of singing. It takes her too long to realize what is happening. Her eyelids are heavy and her movements uncoordinated as the music fills her ears. It's not unpleasant, but she feels sick at the lack of alarm that fills her. She knows, even as unconscious begins to claim her, that she will be safe enough, that he would never take her life after failing to do so today. [break][break]

A bang in the distance tells her that her Rocket comrades are successful to some degree in their endeavor on the island. At least she accomplished that much, distracting Montgomery from his task of stopping the Rocket assault, before she lost.

She leaned over Cora's neck to look down at the sea below. The swarm of wimpod and golisopod were enticing. She wondered if their massive movement was a response to recent League movements. Were they preparing to fight from the sea? It was foolish to try and beat Rocket at their own game, as far as she was concerned. It was more effective in terms of resources to double down on your own strengths rather than try to reinforce weaknesses that still wouldn't measure up against the opponent.[break][break]

But, well, she wasn't on League payroll. [break][break]

The swarm started moving in a totally different direction as if their current path had been blocked off with an exit sign. She pulled out her phone to snap a picture. She didn't study pokemon behaviorism and she was too busy to adopt it now, but she wanted a photo for her own records. Perhaps, it would be possible to revisit in case she ever wanted to learn how to weaponize swarms in the wild.

Her eyebrows shot up at his admission. "...I did not realize the DRK made house calls." She didn't realize they were so bold. She was happy to have no involvement with them if they cared to act that way against him. There was no telling what they'd be willing to try against her, and their capacity to manipulate space made her hesitant to try anything against them without a solid plan. [break][break]

A thundering sea spilled around them. "Oh, please let this not be a drowning event," she both pleaded and groaned as the sky seemed to dip lower. A blue figure approached them, looking angered. She took a long look at him, figuring the simulation had been accurate about representing deities so far. She might never have another opportunity. Of course, Gardevoir decided not to observe a god when she could fight it instead. [break][break]

Gardevoir launched mystical fire, angering it further. Ameena pinched the bridge of her nose. "We need to talk about your god-greeting protocols." Thunderus threatened to bring a thunderclap down on them all.

She contains her flinch at his blur-fast movement only because of her belief that he would not have waited so long to kill her if he wished her dead. Still, she breathes with relief as the syringe finds purchase in the Unown and not herself. She cannot imagine the consequences of such toxins in a person. While she has no evidence of it, she is confident it is not a serum like this that bathed Cillian so thoroughly in shadow. [break][break]

The Unown, at first, does not seem to react to the plunge of shadow toxin. She thinks, for a moment, that it will take the shadow serum without trouble at all - or more unfortunately, die in her hand instantly. [break][break]

Neither happens. It jerks aggressively, not quite making a sound but still articulating agony in its mannerisms. One hand was a mistake; it escapes for a fleeting second before she brings both hands to clasp at its 'head,' covering its eye. "What a fighter," she grits out as she struggles to contain it. Apparently, it had a fleeing instinct. But such instinct would not save it from the nature-defying process it was undergoing. [break][break]

She saw an aberration of a spark, the warning portent before disaster. "Get back!" She shuffled away from the battery nonsense, but her Xurkitree came close at the sound of her distress. It generated an electric terrain. The pulsing electricity spread the excess energy from the batteries over a greater distance, but still, they could see small explosions of electricity from where batteries burst. Odd white powder puffed up from several of them from the small explosions, mitigated by the terrain but still crackling from excess energy. [break][break]

"When the terrain ends, I think the full battery pile is going to explode." It could bomb the warehouse in just a moment. "I am taking my leave... we can blame this one on League interference." She had no interest in being in the same town as the warehouse by the time it went off.

It's not something she can justify, but she feels rather safe. It could be the ambassador's Galarian accent or the friendly pokemon. And then it occurs to her that she knows who the Galarian ambassador is, and it is none other than a member of the Calcifet family. "Forgive me," she starts, "I could not place you at first, Ms. Calcifet." She wasn't so involved in royal affairs as to know all of the details, but she had taken her visit to Galar not too long ago, and she had heard plenty of public opinion about the Calcifet heirs 'diddling about' in Hoenn. [break][break]

"You must be so busy." She was thankful for no bad blood between Galar and Hoenn, but she knew that her and Remiel being in Hoenn was not necessarily sitting well with the folks back home. Not that Ameena stayed long enough to water her roots, so to speak. "But while you are here, I would love a recommendation for a source on black tea. Even the small shops in Mauville are disappointing."[break][break]

She straightened up a bit as the egg shifted aggressively. "Oi! Do not hatch here," she hissed quietly as she looked back at it.

But she feels relief that they're not scripted to face excruciating deaths. He flips the coin and says something about an original region, and isn't that a thinker? The rift forms. "Well, at least that was better than being eviscerated by Regirock." Her voice is low, but it comes out more bitter than amused like she intends. [break][break]

"But if I had to choose anyone to be eviscerated with, you are not a bad choice." She offers a genuine grin as she's been a fan of dark humor since the military instilled it in her. More thoughtfully, she adds, "Probably my first choice for interrogating one of them, too. From what I have heard, the DRK have earned their lumps." She had spent too much time committing herself to Megalopolans as far as external support for research went, but her suspicion was growing that the DRK could offer advancements for dream travel, too.

Interesting. She wonders if they can obtain a high enough quantity of duplicate pokemon of shiny and regular palette to test her theory. She knows the concoction he has is a limited supply, but there are many methods to rebirth a pokemon in shadow, and she's rather curious to see how they all shake out. Not enough to sacrifice her own research for it, but enough to be willing to contribute. [break][break]

She holds a hand out between them. Her Unown flutters over to it, unafraid. Her fingers fold over it firmly, but she won't tighten her grip until he's committed to stabbing it. [break][break]

"Roll the dice," she responds with a tone in the dead man's land between polite and evil scientist. She urges herself not to blink, as she wants to take it all in.

The syringe enticed her. "As my only Unown, I cannot parse how much more susceptible it may be to these effects than any other, but I think the benefits outweigh the risks." Unown existed in an odd spot, being not quiet the legendary deities that held power over a specific domain but also being somewhat divine in nature. "It would be unfortunate to lose the Unown," she observed as the world shifted away from darkness, "but I am not in the habit of keeping things I cannot afford to lose." Her life was marked by too much major loss for her to manage any more without losing her mind itself. [break][break]

Before them stood a man, vaguely familiar. It took her a moment to place him. "One of the DRK Triad... in the simulation? I have not been down this path before." Lulu and talked to her about the Triad and her suspicions about the nature of their involvement in the RKS, but Ameena had always imagined it to be very 'behind the scenes.' [break][break]

"Have you seen this scenario play out before? What should we do?" Her preference, of course, was to avoid anything traumatic, though the RKS seemed destined to spit out the most horrifying scenes.
