It is unbelievably easy to hide behind Porgyon's flawed but powerful code running and the capacity of her laboratory to operate so seamlessly without human oversight. Both are testaments to her strengths: ambition and perseverance. Both, however, failed to serve her needs. It is far too easy to point out every factor that aligned in the most unfortunate mishap of her scientific career, that this was mathematically infinitesmal and therefore unworthy of safety protocols or contingency. [break][break]

But easy has never been rewarded. [break][break]

That, and he does her the favor of not hopping over her desk to strangle her, so she feels incentivized to give him the whole truth. "I have been preparing a thorough recounting of events for you, Cillian, Elisabeth. I intend to hand it over. She came across a white form. Upon closer inspection, it was an Oranguru. The pokemon seemed to be at peace. She was meditating. "Seems like an object lesson." Sigilyph didn't react to her attempt at humor, but Sigilyph was a pretty straight-faced pokemon for one lacking a face completely.[break][break]

Ameena pulled a pokeball. "I could use some serenity on my team." She tossed the pokeball, and Sigilyph used gravity to hold the ball down and dissuade attempts to break free.

She had not been in Rocket when she came to Hoenn. She had come for research opportunities; she had not known, then, just how many opportunities would be here. [break][break]

"The price is too high," she assessed immediately. "For all the power granted through Avatarship here, and for all the unique and unnatural creatures like the Ultra Beasts and the Paradoxes, what has any one of us actually gained for it?" Pessimistic, sure. Unfortunately, her goals meant she had to stay here. The anomalies in Hoenn gave her far too many breakthroughs in her research. That, and the brilliant Lulu Flint was here, and she was the greatest collaborator for Ameena's goals. [break][break]

"But if you were not here," she ventured, "where would you be? And after what we have seen in Hoenn, how could anywhere else offer fulfillment?" It would be quiet, elsewhere. Too quiet. And you would be condemned to watch all that goes down in Hoenn.

She had taken to travelling by foot lately. It was obviously faster to teleport, but things had been moving so quickly lately that this small concession put her mind at rest. Slowing down physically gave her time to process. Additionally, the act of achieving something like travelling for necessary resources or to meet with a client let her take this processing time without guilt. After all, she was being productive. And, her pokemon seemed to appreciate the time to stretch their legs.

Another pokeball.

It was good for her collection, but it wasn't what she sought. She figured she could do another round at Mt. Chimney with the series of capture capsules she was going to walk away with today. But that excursion would be saved for the end of the week. She needed to focus on the objects beneath her in the sea. One would be a Clamperl.

Ameena ignored the teenager behind her. He was whooping at his successful chain of tricks. It was important to stay focused and imagine herself succeeding. Everything else was a distraction. She needed to fulfill a few of the tricks demonstrated to the crowd so she could earn enough points to place on the leaderboard. She was going to need the power of one of her psychic pokemon to center her if she couldn't get her head in the game.

She entered her professional persona as she rose to accept his hand shake. "Mr. Silph," she acknowledged with a polite smile. She sat back in her chair and assessed him. It was unclear if he was suffering nightmares or narcolepsy or addictive and obsessive qualities just from looking at him. There were so many possible side effects of the study that she was still trying to quantify. [break][break]

She didn't intend to waste her time or his with excessive pleasantries. She wanted to extract data from him as efficiently as possible. His own interpretation of the events could be interesting, but so far, no one had shared the nature of the initial dream, and no one had been forthcoming about any fixation on the person they dreamt with. But the ball was in his court. "What brings you in?"

As she reached the exit, a misty terrain filled the area. She spared a glance at Sigilyph. It spoke volumes. Her pokemon went off to find the pokemon behind it. Ameena examined her nails as she waited. In about a minute, her companion returned with a knocked-out Popplio. She wasn't sure what use to make of it quite yet, but if nothing else, the performance capacity of the Popplio could be useful if there was a lucrative contest in the future.

Progress came from forces outside of their control... He seemed to be right. She was no expert on the simulation, but those she had spoken with had seemed weary of their visits of the simulation and had implied DRK control of it to be absolute. [break][break]

Whatever that looked like, in full, she couldn't say. [break][break]

"I feel the simulation could not exist for no reason. If there is a common theme among these simulations or some detail we are failing to pick up on, it could indicate the purpose of the simulation. The reason we have access to it so readily." She couldn't agree that it was futile. Nihilism wasn't a terrible philosophy, but as a scientist, she could not apply it here. [break][break]

She watched the Wish Tag in his hands, wondering if she could ever see it for herself in real life and if it would really work at all. For all the problems and inconveniences of the simulation, she felt there was value in exploring it on the off-chance she could make a major breakthrough. Perhaps, he valued other scientific projects in Rocket. There were countless projects. "What would you rather be focusing your attention on?"

The question feels like a trap. Still, Theo's been amenable all day, so she takes a moment to consider the question fully before giving out an answer. She didn't want to seem defensive, nor like she was just throwing him a line. [break][break]

"My research has taken a backseat in favor of gathering more pokemon and training those I have. Since shadow pokemon are more ferocious, I worked with Cillian to change my Unown, and I have been looking into finding pokemon with those toxic chains." She shook her head a little; he didn't seem to be asking for that information. [break][break]

"I do not feel prepared. But if I did feel prepared, that comfort would be a weakness. I am no stranger to war, as a veteran, but I have yet to experience it in Hoenn. And it is ever clear to me that Hoenn is not like the rest of the world." In more ways than one.

Hawkins' interpretation was interesting. So far, she had visited the simulations with fellow scientists of the opinion that the simulation taught them something about the multiverse. That the Triad had some hand in it and there was some way to extract intel about them through visiting the simulation. That the simulation held secrets they were still discovering, so the creators of it knew something the rest of the world did not. The green masked pokemon in the simulation that wasn't seen until the Penitentiary, for one.[break][break]

"Meaningless in the sense that we cannot change the simulation? Or in a broader sense?" [break][break]

The world blended into another scenario.

The sleeping, mold-colored Trapinch was easy to walk past. She had little interest in such a weak pokemon. They transformed into something decent, but she had little time for raising something. It might be worth something on the black market, but there were more valuable pokemon in the safari. She hoped to see a Popplio. Those had a better value on the market because they were such natural performing pokemon.

The Penitentiary unfolds around her, the universe seemingly filled with creases until it flattens. She feels far too heavy in a paper world and far too contained by paper cages. The prison is fickle, thin. She reaches out to her bars and tears. [break][break]

The bars yield beneath her warm hands. [break][break]

Her cellies are not here. The others in the prison are not here, either, yet she feels a distinct presence. The warden of their segment stands behind her, in her cell, but it is not the god she met that day. It's Espathra. [break][break]

Despite being identical, she knows this is her first partner, not her current. [break][break]

The toxic chain around it looks heavy. It has the stance and stature of a deity but the chain weighs it down, brings it back to earth. She wants to hold her partner again, but just as the thought to reach out comes to her, the bird's neck snaps from the weight of the chain. Limp.[break][break]
