For a moment, Ameena had thought she'd heard a squeak from Gwen when she pulled the Ranger close. No matter. She kept her amusement to herself as they moved through the city and did their best to avoid swarms of Megalopolans. "The crystal grows like a tumor," she observed as they passed a particularly mutilated bunch. [break][break]

She wondered what it felt like. If it felt empowering. She imagined that's how it felt for Zev, but she would never ask. She wasn't sure she wanted to know. She had no interest in that kind of connection with a deity. She didn't dive into the train the thought as she was interrupted by Gwen's question. [break][break]

She answered immediately, "Necrozma," before realizing that the less Leaguers knew, the better. It was stupid, but there was that instinct in her to answer questions she understood, especially as she saw Gwen as a fellow member of the scientific community despite the lack of credentials. "Necrozma bears those dark crystals." Well, she was fostering Gwen to be under her wing anyways, so it was no gain for the League. Really, it was an offering to gain Gwen's trust. She was working a potential agent. [break][break]

She was prepared to justify her actions should she ever be questioned, but nothing she had done with Gwen should raise any flags with her superiors if they ever cared to see how frequently she collaborated with her. "I do not understand the crystallization of the Megalopolans here, but it is best not to touch it." They neared the tower.

A shard of glass from the broken windshield flew at breakneck speeds, slicing at her upper arm. She flinched, hissed, and took a step back. "Keep going," she insisted to Rotom. [break][break]

The green-haired fellow was closest to her, and she noticed his Ranger arm band. Surely, those people were the kind to walk around with first aid kits or something, right? "Do you have an aid kit on you?" She could make a makeshift bandage if she needed to, but she was really hoping for disinfectant above all else. Who knew what bacteria had filled the car from the junkyard before they started beating on it.

Ameena took a step back as Zev raised his knee to the Urshifu's head. She feared the worst. Urshifu went down to all fours and shook his head slightly, vision probably blurring. She worried more about Zev, who had quickly reacted to the bear's assault. "Are you okay?" She blurted out the question even as she approached her Urshifu instead, cradling its head as it leaned against her and got its bearings back. [break][break]

She pet his head absently. She would have never made the same call he did, but it'd worked. Perhaps, she needed to be more aggressive in her approach. She needed to be willing to hurt herself if it hurt the enemy more, but she was so used to sustained fighting in low-resource conditions that prioritizing health was important for longevity. It didn't seem like the war would be a low-resource condition, not for them, not for Rocket who had fewer mouths to feed.[break][break]

"Untrained," she echoed belatedly. "It must take more than training to fight like that." Training gave one a familiarity with their body and their limitations, but she wasn't sure you could train someone to keep a cool head against a raging Urshifu. He had responded decisively. Maybe that was the missing piece: full commit to a plan of action. Thoughtfully, she obsered, "I would have been too overwhelmed with the different ways to respond."

A poker face was vital in an interrogation. Letting your true thoughts or reactions out was a dangerous precedent. Additionally, that reactivity implied weakness. It allowed the target to think they could learn from your reactions. It allowed the target to think they could move you in some way. It was, unequivocally, important to be as impassive as the room itself, to be an unbreakable and unclimbable wall for the target to beat their head against. [break][break]

But Ameena reacted.[break][break]

Her eyebrows skyrocketed at Aqua's first swing, second. They didn't seem happy about it, but they were not cringing, either. They brought the bat down again. [break][break]

The man spilled his guts once they stopped. [break][break]

He curled up afterwards, and Ameena tugged Aqua out of the room quickly. With the door shut behind them, she said, "I am truly impressed. I did not think you had it in you." The confession was not cruel, though it might be unwelcome. "We can report the good news."

Himiko's rationale was solid. "It really does protect the community to remove poisons," she murmured thoughtfully as Himiko's pokemon attacked the Seviper. "I do not have a special affinity for poison types, but I should branch out into using them more." After all, she had witnessed the impact of poison first hand in the penitentiary. [break][break]

It was impossible to forget about. [break][break]

Ameena's Gardevoir used imprison to trap the Gorebyss long enough to toss a pokeball at. "What caused your preference for poison types?" Often, she found that her colleagues in Rocket had favored types. She knew few who didn't. Though, in all fairness, every one of them used a variety and didn't feel trapped by that preference.

"I recommend you visit Galar to see what a society stuck in the past looks like." It sounds like a cutting indictment, but she says it fondly. Ancestry is less important in these regions, but in Galar, your descendants spell out your fate. It had pros and cons. [break][break]

She wasn't sure if she benefitted more than she was punished for it. "The food is not as palatable to outsiders as, say, Kanto or Kalos. I enjoy it, of course, but it tastes like home to me. I know some spots known for spice, if that kind of thing interests you."

The junk yard was filled with troublemakers. She flinched at the sound of slashes against the metal, but the squeals of contact only spelled out success. The emotional reward for breaking stuff made her rough week of work worth it. She was near giddy as Rotom launched discharge at the door of the car. The clump of electricity shocked the door clean off the car, though Rotom's passive charge gave it a lilt of magnetism. The door floated between Rotom and the car before finally descending to the dirt.

Heads are going to roll. For now, though, it is clear that her people have been seeking external funds. She can't imagine there are a lot of buyers for dream research, but it could be a ploy for blackmail material. No researcher wants their information publicized before its ready, especially if they lose credit for it - but in her case, specifically, this raw data is too telling. It risks revealing sensitive information about Rocket administrators. [break][break]

When she trusts she can speak evenly, she asks, "Can you track the source?" Then: "Whatever you can do to close it... I will have to flay my team for this misstep." Too much carrot and not enough stick, she assessed. She would need to stick to Rocket employees only for security on Rocket matters. No one else had the specific understanding of how much there was to gain and lose in working with such an organization. [break][break]

She clicked her tongue with dissatisfaction at how easily he had pulled this thread. He was good, no doubt, but she was more worried about how poorly her own had been performing. "I can route fifty your way for finding the rat. I have extermination handled." She pushed her Rotom away sharply as it sought to get closer to the screen. "And much more if you are willing to stress-test my next team." Or join it, though she feared this display of incompetence might warn him away from her company.

The pokemon center was a good call. Unfortunately, it would not be an uneventful visit. The two men she saw on the motorboats underneath them were at first nameless; then, she realized the blond was actually familiar. He was the gym leader who did all those self-defense classes. Guyere? No, hm. Gwyar Wledig , yes. Her secretary had once mentioned attending those courses. She hadn't expected them to move so quickly from intruding to attacking. [break][break]

Rhys Collins protected her from the Kabutops' swipe, but at the near cost of a sharp fall. She immediately began to pull up the vine-laden bridge to help bring him back up to high ground while Gardevoir went on the hunt. Goodra was handling Kabutops, so Gardevoir launched ahead to stop Gwyar and his pokemon from reaching the pokemon center. She launched psychic at the duo. [break][break]

Ameena kept herself focused on Rhys. "Are you alright?" She pulled the bridge up with firm hands. "I can pull back Gardevoir for a healing pulse." Their pokemon needed to take hits, not them.

Ameena heard a small explosion nearby. It was easy to pay it no mind: there were several people here now, trying to smash up a car. "Rotom, do not start slacking now." The electric pokemon was high-energy. She needed it to bring it all here now. Though, she supposed, it was more important that she was entertained than that she won. The prizes were paltry. The glory of watching something explode, though? [break][break]

"Bring the thunder," she instructed, watching with pleasure as Rotom launched thunder shock down on the car.

All her zipping around awoke the Dhelmise. It rose from the ground silently, shooting out a chain to grapple Magearna before Ameena could call out. Magearna instinctively used gravity to smash the Dhelmise to the ground. It took a lot of force to push the ghost lower, so much so that Ameena found herself taking a pre-emptive step back in case Magearna's area of effect expanded and crushed her bones. Thankfully, the Dhelmise's forced submission was the perfect opportunity to toss a pokeball at it. "Good thinking," she praised at Magearna's instinct. Still, she'd rather the pokemon take things easier as they traveled.

Two scrappy individuals walk into a bar and look their mistakes in the face. Wait, no one would ever do that. Let's see. Two scrappy individuals walk into a bar and fight over a fifty-dollar bill on the ground. No, that's not right. Two scrappy individuals walk into a bar and see themselves in each other. Is that too reductionist? Too broad?

Ah, here's how it goes:

Two scrappy individuals stagger into a bar and sit across from each other at a wooden table. Some juvenile scribble or doodle is carved into one curve of the table. Everyone else in the bar is a nobody. It's the two of them in some meaningless, mundane setting with minimal set dressing. Besides the table, there is nothing between them.

Perhaps, it is more accurate to say there is nothing stuck between them. The dream is reaching a crescendo, held on by strings. The minds navigate the 'scape have been victim to its anomalies but have not been ensnared by its trap. You are unaffected by any alterations to your behavior, any unusual visions beyond the bar. There are no more visions of dead relatives nor of monstrous possibilities brought on by failure. You are stuck neither in the past nor in a cyclical vision of potential futures (potential pasts?).
