The man tried to play into his unassuming appearance and naturally dumb-looking resting face, but Ameena was not some foal Ponyta. She could not be fooled so easily. The playbook offered multiple routes for interrogation. Frankly, Ameena would have preferred to let a psychic at him and call it a day, but a human touch was necessary here. The higher-ups wanted the man to break by the hands of Rocket's agents. Perhaps, the man had personally wronged one of her bosses.[break][break]

She turned to Aqua and very quietly spoke. "I think we should try to persuade him to our side. Rocket offers more freedom, especially with the crackdowns happening on the League end. If he wants to be with us, his skills will be put to good use, and he might make an excellent spy." The intel he could get from the inside would be invaluable in the coming war. But Ameena didn't believe in making unilateral decisions.

The tera tunnels were stunning, visually. But the excitement was tampered with an anxiety that preceded war. It was a complicated thing, as this was the sort of anxiety that usually debilitated civilians, but she was a seasoned war veteran. Her anxiety was less ambiguous and more concrete, though perhaps it was more accurately described as anticipation. [break][break]

"We must fortify the area." If it fell into League hands, Rocket would lose a lot of resources. Besides, security and knowledge were important, but if you couldn't defend what you knew was about to be attacked, what was the point of finding out about it at all? They needed to have the capacity to do something should anyone try to assault the hold. [break][break]

The metal beams were top-quality. Aurelie had done nothing but earn respect from Ameena. Still, as Gardevoir began to move the steel beam into place, Ameena couldn't help but voice her concern. "Do you think the League even knows about it? This location?"

This was one of the last chances for war preparation. It wasn't even on the horizon anymore but rather a dark and stormy cloud. They were only waiting for the downpour to reach their faces. [break][break]

She stood beside Kasper and tried to assess just how prepared they were. Their youth showed so obviously on their face, but age wasn't an end-all be-all for competence. It was important to remember that. The person who killed you in the battlefield could look like anyone. "So," she started softly, not wanting to startle them by interrupting the intensity of the moment. "Who should we go with?" [break][break]

She wanted Kasper to feel they had someone in their corner. And, all things considered, Ameena liked the kid and had shown enough interest in their development to consider herself invested in their success. "I know Zev. He is very intense, but he is also one of the most powerful members of Rocket. Very few are in his league. But some of his power is completely unobtainable to anyone else." His lessons might have natural drawbacks considering that. He fought at a caliber no one unaligned with a god could quite manage. [break][break]

Drawn to him? She wondered what that felt like. To naturally attract the most violence-inclined pokemon passively would make her question some things about herself. "Your command over shadows, is that something that came after your partnership?" Had he had a connection to shadows before Avatarship? He was the only one that seemed to function in this way. Even Zev, who was naturally terrifying, didn't seem to control shadows like Cillian. [break][break]

Gardevoir teleported around a raging Duraludon, staying just a smidge out of reach to keep it frustrated and draining of its own strength. She felt for the wild steel pokemon, for a moment, as the stress of the coming war on top of the demands of her research and the juggle of Rocket responsibilities left her feeling antagonized. [break][break]

"Are you researching the creation of shadow pokemon for a personal army?" It didn't seem like the kind of thing to study just for the pursuit of scientific discovery, though fully understanding what turned pokemon into shadow would be an incredible development. She wondered if it and illumina were just two sides of the same coin, though she'd never encountered either pokemon for more than a few minutes.

Ameena wanted to reach for the knife at her belt, but she wanted to give the little one an opportunity to offer something in this fight. Her shadow hound's chill was visibly powerful, but Ameena found herself numbed to the sensation. Then, a flash of familiar green appeared - the thing from the Penitentiary? - but it was gone as soon as it had shown itself. [break][break]

Gardevoir's mega evolution wore out. Ameena felt the chill all at once, her breath punched out of her lungs. It wasn't too different from dunking your head in a bucket of ice water. She gasped and doubled over, trying for her breath. Meanwhile, Gardevoir teleported back down and stood between Ameena and the shadow Arcanine. Her bloodlust was visible as she began to charge a psychic attack, but Ameena gripped the pokemon's wrist, still unable to straighten up. [break][break]

"N-n-no," she made out through chattering teeth. She felt drained, like her body was a husk that she was barely subsiding in. Her head hurt like hell, and the last three minutes of her life were a jumbled mess. Had she just grabbed the trainer by the hair in public? She hadn't been that upset... [break][break]

Nervousness shot through her telepathic bond with Gardevoir, and the psychic glared Yuina down as it teleported the duo far away.

He was right to always have a pokemon out, but she couldn't say she cared for the sacrifice. She wouldn't tolerate a bug on her like that, but she supposed it would be effective enough. He wasn't some delinquent juvenile in Rocket needed tips and tricks. He had been around long enough to know how to get out of a pickle, so she let it go, though not without letting her gaze rest on the Joltik with suspicion, first. [break][break]

Yuan works the kid over, identifying the Indeedee immediately. Ameena arches a high brow at his commentary, but smacking him in public wouldn't be a good look. She looks to the kid with an expression that comes across a bit like, 'get a load of this guy.' The kid's confidence is renewed. "You can't figure it out!" The kid insists, putting her hands on her hips. Ameena turns her head away to hide a smirk, looking forward to seeing the grand reveal.

Ameena flinched at the sound behind her, turning to see some guy. There was strength in numbers. She felt relief, even though she worried as she saw he used a Staraptor, and she thought those didn't handle electricity well. "Be careful, Xurkitree." She didn't want him shooting the bird out of the sky with an electrical blast. She wanted the goodwill of the stranger to improve their chances of survival. [break][break]

"Zap Cannon," she ordered. The electric terrain powered up his blast of electrical energy as he launched it at the Avalugg, knocking it in the head. [break][break]

The Avalugg launched an ice beam at Liam's pokemon, angered at the presence of an aerial threat when he already had obnoxious antagonists on the ground floor. "Keep its attention divided!" Ameena shouted over the Blizzard.

Hell, the penitentiary had been the final nail in the coffin to force her to suspend her disbelief in all encounters in Hoenn. The region was unhinged, but it held so much potential that continued to grow. It was clear that there were large forces at work that all held varying interests... and who knew what they could find to fight back?[break][break]

"If these otherworldly materials do not always have odd readings, like this piece of metal, it could be easy to overlook other materializations." It could be like finding a needle in a haystack if you had no idea what the needle would look like. Still. "We need to keep them away." Gwendolyn was doing good work, but they needed more power. "Gar, do it." The gardevoir mega evolved. The gardevoir used alluring voice to push back one side of the horde as it grew around them as an encompassing circle. [break][break]

Ameena hesitated. She wanted to reach for her bag to secure more pokemon, but she also wanted to push Gwen to act more ferociously. War had a habit of pulling that raw, feral strength out of people. She had experienced her fair share of epiphanies on the battlefield, each making her more and more experienced or refined in the art of war. It was easy to reading a training manual and another thing entirely to push your limits in a battle and learn that you were more capable than you'd thought. [break][break]
