Shaking away depressing thoughts of whether or not his parents were dead, he followed Shalin. Like the green-haired woman, he saw nothing, which worried him greatly. Chewing his lip, he continued to cast his gaze downward, sweeping the area below them with fervor.

That was very worrying instead.

The sound of Shalin’s voice broke into his spiraling thoughts, and he gave her a sideways glance. “I don’t like this. Josh wouldn’t just go missing for no reason, and that scares me,” he admitted.[break] Shalin Nariya

It would be the little sister who broke the silence after his self-esteem issues reared their heads instead of the black-haired man. The girl seemed more than eager to meet his Ninetales, while the brother seemed to be leaning more towards his way of thinking; however, the younger man would eventually side with his sister, probably unable to turn his little sister down.

With both of them agreeing, he would relent himself. Hopefully Sesi wouldn’t be too annoyed about being brought up in such conditions. Knowing her, as long as she was able to help Beckett, she wouldn’t be.

Taking out a pokeball, he would release the wintery fox from her pokeball. Unlike most of her kind, she was big for her size, standing well enough that of a normal-sized Ninetales, being big enough for someone to easily be able to ride her.

“Sesi, do you think you could find us a safe place to hunker down?” He asked, wringing his hands together, still apparently never.

By answer, Sesi would simply start sniffing the air as she looked around their surroundings until finally it seemed she had something. Glancing at the other two to make sure they were following, he would follow the snowy fox to what appeared to be an abandoned secret base.[break] Gerald Kaiser

The museum. Oh right Slatesport had a museum, and Lilycove had some kind of art museum, if he remembered correctly. He had never been to either. Not because he didn’t have a desire to go, but because he tended to avoid places that might get a bit crowded. He and the crowds just didn’t mix.

“Th-That sounds nice. I’ve never be-been to the museum myself, but I hear i-it’s nice,” he told the young woman. He had heard pretty good things about the museum. He had just kind of forgotten it was here, and then again, he had come here with the purpose of visiting the park.

The fact that she had just stumbled across this secluded spot was definitely interesting. It was fairly similar to how he had first come across the pond. “The pond is kind of hi-hidden away, isn’t it? Sesi led me t-to it when we fi-first came here,” he said as he rested his hand on the Alonan Ninetales.

As the conversation moved on, the woman would introduce herself as Roze. “It’s a pl-pleasure to meet you; m-my name’s Beckett Carlson, but I al-also go by Beck,” he said, his own gaze straying momentarily to his own pokemon. All of them seemed content to just play in the water, with the exception of Druk, who seemed more curious about the Altaria and approached her.

Considering the Dragonite was the most outgoing of his Pokémon, it went without saying that he would be the first to give into his curiosity and approach a Pokémon he didn’t know.

After ensuring they would be fine on their own, he would turn his attention back to the young woman. Upon hearing her question, he would immediately shake his head. “N-No that’s okay, you c-can stay,” he reassured her, smiling shyly.[break] Roze Falkner

“I’ve always found flying to be exhilarating, even when it was the first time I flew,” he admitted. When he was younger, he often dreamed of soaring through the skies with no insight for miles. Leaving all the struggles life had put him through far behind him.

Of course, that hadn’t happened. He hadn’t had a way to make such a dream come true. Of course, now that he had left that life behind, he couldn’t be happier that it hadn’t happened the way he had dreamed after all.

He had honestly never thought of it. Mostly because he didn’t really know anyone well enough to ride a strange Pokémon. Not unless he were to ride wild Pokémon, which his friend would lecture him about if he tried.

However, if he was given permission to ride another person's Pokémon, that was another matter entirely. “I’m still fairly new to the trainer scene, but if I need to help out with battling, I’m up for that. I plan on learning all I can about being a trainer,” he told the older male.

“As for the second thing, I’m up to riding any Pokémon I can,” he told the gym leader. If he was being honest, he wasn’t sure why he would have a problem riding a Pokémon he was unfamiliar with.

It was worrying that the Voltorb would just cause so much havoc. He had grown up knowing everything happened for a reason. So there had to be a reason that the Voltorb were being destructive.

Unfortunately, it seemed the young woman he had chosen to speak with was just as clueless as he was.

At the question, his gaze flickered briefly toward her. “I’m ju-just starting out as a tr-trainer. I'm still learning the r-ropes so to speak,” he admitted, a bit embarrassed about starting out so late. Most started when they were kids, but not him.

He was actually so new that he tended to just allow his Pokémon to do whatever they wanted when it came to moves.

“An-Anyway even if I’m not th-that skilled, I’m more th-than willing to help,” he told her, figuring the people trying to corral the Voltorb would need as much help as they could get. That, and he couldn’t turn a blind eye to people who needed help, not again.[break] Elinor Anderson

Still, your family's death had to be hard to deal with. Or that’s what he figured anyway. The white-haired young man wouldn’t know that he had never lost a family member in that way before.

“It’s good that you don’t let that get you down. Some people don’t move on,” he pointed out, his thoughts straying from his parents. Didn’t he himself fall into the latter? Sure, he had no knowledge of whether his parents were alive or not, but he was looking for them. Didn’t that mean he hadn’t moved on? Or was it different somehow?

As she pointed out the coincidence of them both having been through the Rocket invasion when they were teenagers, he nodded in agreement. “True, though Kanto was never home to me. Sure, I was born there, but I wouldn’t say I was ever happy. It’s probably why I don’t really hold any bitterness for having to leave.”

He didn’t hate rockets, either. However, since he wasn’t sure of her stance on Team Rocket, he wasn’t about to admit that.

As his gaze flickered around the ground below, he nodded. “Sounds good to me; hopefully something will turn up,” he said, trying to sound more cheerful than he felt, though he was sure he only sounded worried.

He opened his mouth to give a correction on the pronunciation as well as answer her question, but before he could, the younger man brought up a good point. Right soot was falling out of the sky. And pretty strongly by this point. Before too long, it would probably get a bit hard to breathe.

With that in mind, he began to look around himself. But, like the dark-haired man, nothing really stood out to him.

Chewing his lip nervously, he debated what to do.

The chances were that a Pokémon would be better at finding a place to hunker down. If that was the case...

“I don’t ha-have much when it com-comes to Pokemon, but I do have a-an Alonan Nintetales. She’s no dog Pokémon, b-but perhaps she’ll have a be-better time finding somewhere to wait out the storm,” he suggested.

As occupied as he was with watching his Pokémon frolic in the water, he didn’t notice the woman when she appeared. Of the Alonan Ninetales stationed at his side, he immediately sat up upon noticing the newcomer before nudging her trainer to get his attention.

Distracted by Sesi, he turned his way to the dual type, shooting her a curious look. However, before he could ponder for too long what had grabbed her attention, movement from his peripheral vision caught his attention.

Turning to see what had caught his attention, he was surprised to see a woman around his own age, maybe a bit younger, nearby. Upon seeing the wave, he would shyly return it before quickly averting his gaze.

Movement from his peripheral vision told him she was still there and approaching, though. Steeling himself, he looked back up, sending her a shy grin in greeting.

“Hel-Hello, ni-nice day to be out, is-isn't it?” He asked, trying to come across as more confident than he felt when talking to the woman.

Why did talking to people have to be so nerve-wracking?

Swallowing nervously, he decided to continue the conversation. “S-So what brings y-you here? On a wa-walk with yo-your Pokémon?”[break] Roze Falkner

Not long after getting to the Sky Pillar, Andrea would show up. It seemed he had beat her. Though considering the fact that he was using a Pokémon while she was only using a Sygna suit that made use of aerodynamics, it made sense. Still, he had prepared for her having beaten him when he had been caught up in battling the Toucannon.

Almost as if she had read his mind, she brought it up.

"Well, I suppose that’s one way of putting it. It tried to knock us out of the air, so I caught it,” he commented, apparently figuring catching a Pokémon trying to knock him out of the sky made perfect sense. In reality, it would usually only make sense to someone like Beckett.

Someone had a bleeding heart. A person who wanted to give Pokémon the attention he felt they deserved.

The arrival of a Dartrix pulled him out of his thoughts, and he watched the interaction between them with a small smile on his face. “She seems really happy to be getting your attention,” he agreed.

As absorbed as he was in watching Dartrix and Andrea, he didn’t notice any danger around them until she heard a screech from Sora. Startled, he turned back to where he had left the Hisuian Braviary after dismounting to see a Golbat latching onto Sora.

For a second, he was so caught off guard by seeing a Golbat out in the daytime that he was rooted to the spot. It took Sora shaking the golbat off and the Golbat going for him to act.

Clearly doing the first thing that popped into his mind, he got in between the Golbat and Sora, causing the Golbat to bowl him over. He managed to get a grip on the golbat, but the golbat simply aimed a bite at Beck, attempting to feed on him instead, but was only able to graze his arm due to the long sleeves he wore.

Not happy about the golbat’s attempted attack on his trainer, he would knock him away with a wing before hitting the golbat with a Wing Attack for good measure. Worried for the Golbat, Beck hit the Golbat with a pokeball before Sora could go for another attack.

“That wasn’t smart,” he admitted, clearly talking about putting himself in harm's way.[break] Andrea Vaneau

If he weren’t so fixated on bird Pokémon and other flying types, as well as Vulpix and Ninetales, he would probably have been a collector of Pokémon that had musical talent. There were definitely Pokémon outside of bird Pokémon that could carry a tune in this form of fashion.

“I like Pokémon I can soar through the air with, so probably,” he agreed awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck. There was no greater freedom, in his opinion, than to take to the skies with his Pokémon.

Of course, he had a deep admiration for Pokémon in general. But like everyone else, he had his preferences when it came to the Pokémon he owned. Even he, with his gentle disposition, wasn’t an exception to that.

The next line of questioning made him think.

Like strengths and weaknesses? He couldn’t think of a specific moment off the top of his head when it came to personal success or personal failure. Well, he could, but both are stuff he kept hidden, like his work as an author when it came to personal successes or his life before coming to Hoenn when it came to personal failures.

“I guess I regret not being able to do more when Rocket invaded Kanto. I’ve never been big on confrontation, so I ran. I didn’t have Pokémon at the time, but I could’ve done more. You know, you helped people evacuate,” he told him, frowning slightly. With how old he was at the time, keeping that as a regret was probably unfair. However, deep down, he would also be the type of person who cared deeply for other people.

Personal failures weren’t hard to think of, but successes were. After some thought, he thought of something. “Due to growing up in poverty, I never had the means to get a formal education. So things like reading or writing are self-taught; other basic skills like cooking are self-taught as well.” He had mostly learned to cook from watching others but had never actually been formally educated.

“So I guess that makes me versatile,” he finished. He had always had to adapt, even if that meant teaching himself stuff he should’ve had to learn as a child.[break] Josh Devlin
