Getting his attention didn’t take much effort, and before long, the older male was greeting him. “Hello, it’s a pleasure to meet you,” he said once it was clear he had the dark-haired man’s attention.

Before he could respond to the older male's comment about being early, the older male’s hand entering his field of vision distracted him. Though he was aware of proper etiquette and how shaking hands was part of that, he still couldn’t help but feel uneasy. After all, physical contact was still physical contact, no matter what form it took.

“Sorry, I’m afraid I’m not the biggest fan of physical contact,” he said, his tone apologetic and his smile somewhat self-deprecating. It wasn’t like he could help the way he felt, but it still left him with mixed feelings, even so.

Not wanting things to become awkward, he just decided to move on with the conversation. “M..Josh,” that was going to take some getting used to. He wasn’t used to being so informal with someone he considered superior.

“My name’s Beckett; Beck works just as well, though,” he said, pausing to give a polite dip of his head to the older male before continuing on. “As for the position I’m interested in, I’ve heard you’re hoping to add a few Pokémon caretakers to your roster,” he commented as he sat down in the chair in front of the desk, having momentarily forgotten that he was still standing.

Sitting would also keep him from fidgeting too much while he spoke. He was just lucky he had been able to refrain from stumbling over his words or speaking inaudibly.[break] Josh Devlin

“I guess I try not to concern myself with how much money another person has. It goes without saying that it isn’t really any of my business,” he pointed out, his voice barely audible. Part of him still wasn’t used to being able to express his opinions, half expecting to be yelled at for having an opinion, even if what he said was true.

Some, like Val, wouldn’t have seen it like that. He would’ve wanted him to simply agree with him with a simple yes, sir. Any other response would’ve been seen as him talking back, so it had just been easier to not have an opinion.

At the mention of Mauville having been a military city, he shifted uncomfortably. “It’s good he was able to better Mauville. No disrespect against the military, but I am a pacifist, so not having to deal with the idea of war not being shoved repeatedly into my face is a relief,” he admitted, looking down and fiddling with his fingers as he spoke.

As the subject turned to the subject of the reason they had come here, he couldn’t help but be relieved. “Sounds good to me,” he said, his gaze fixed downward as he checked one last time to make sure the saddle on Sora was fixed the way it was supposed to. Once he had, he would turn his attention to Shalin.

Movement from his peripheral vision caught his attention immediately, causing him to look to his side. To his surprise, he spotted a woman flying towards him. It wasn’t that he was surprised to find someone else up here with him, but that she was flying by herself and not with the aid of a Pokémon.

The outfit she wore was strange as well. Something told him that it was because of the suit she wore that she could fly. It's almost like a wind suit.

Was this one of those Sygna suits he had heard about? He had heard they could grant people unnatural abilities. However, he had never seen one in action before. Then again, he hadn’t seen one inactive before either.

“Something like that. I wanted to go for a flyover over the ocean, but considering I hadn’t been past Lilycove before, I kind of got lost. However, I did decide to make the most of it and get some exploring done before I have to figure my way back,” he admitted, his own response more subdued than her own, giving way for his shyer nature.

"Anyway, my name’s Beckett, or Beck if you prefer, and this is Sora,” he said, introducing both himself and his braviary.

Before they could get too much into a conversation, he noticed from a distance. Wondering if it was another person, he glanced towards what had caught his attention, only to see a dragonite.

It spotted them as well but seemed more curious about them being near its airspace than angry. He figured it was because they weren’t showing any aggression toward it or their surroundings. He debated and didn't get closer to it, but before he could, he decided to move closer on his own.

At first, it seemed the most curious about the fact Andrea could fly on her own before turning its curiosity towards Sora, who seemed just as interested in the dragonite. While Sora could definitely be overly protective of him, he was also a fairly social creature, unlike his own owner. This, of course, led to Sora being more eager to interact with more Pokémon, even if those Pokémon weren’t owned by someone, just as long as they didn’t show aggression anyway.

Seeing how interested the Dragonite was in his mount, he pulled out a pokeball and decided to see if the Dragonite would want to join his team.

“Hey there, if you want to get to know Sora, I would be more than happy for you to join my team,” he said, drawing the dragonite’s attention towards himself as he held a pokeball towards him. The dragonite seemed to consider him for a minute before brushing his snout against the button, allowing himself to be drawn into the pokeball.[break] Andrea Vaneau

Today was an off day, so he decided to spend the day bonding with his Pokémon. The early hours of the day had been spent with his Alolan Ninetails. Now that lunch had passed, he was choosing to bond with his Hisuian Braviary. To do that, he had to soar through the sky with him.

Despite having been in Hoenn for the past eight years, he still didn’t know the whole layout of Hoenn. Usually, he didn’t go too far from home. The furthest was Lilycove, so it wasn’t long before he found himself getting lost.

Frowning, he looked every which way but couldn’t really figure out which direction he had come. Stretching in all directions, all he could see was water, which made sense since he had decided to fly out over the ocean.

Perhaps he should’ve spent more time exploring after he hadn’t had Val to worry about anymore. Instead, he had been so focused on getting started as an author that the thought of exploring his new home hadn’t crossed his mind. Oh well, he supposed there was no time like the present.

Taking a deep breath, he felt himself calm. There is no point in panicking. He was sure he would come across someone eventually who could give him directions.

Until then, he would just explore his new surroundings.

The sound of his name pulled him out of his thoughts, and he barely refrained from exclaiming in surprise. He did jump a bit, though.

His face heating up a bit, he turned to face the green-haired woman who had spoken to him. Considering the woman knew his name, he could only assume this woman was his partner.

Before confirming his identity, he would take note of her own mount. Unlike his own Hisuian Braviary, she was riding a shiny Volcarona, something he had never seen before. Deciding to worry about that later, he instead focused his attention on the conversation that had started up between them.

“Th-That’s right It’s a pleasure to meet you, Captain Nariya,” he said, giving her a small, a bit a timid one. “I haven’t known Mr. Devlin long, but I still care about him. I work at his gym as one of the Pokémon caretakers,” he explained, meeting her gaze as much as he could.[break] Shalin Nariya

The wait didn’t take long, and before he knew it, the man at the front desk was telling him the gym leader was ready to see him. A fact that made him a bit nervous.

Pushing down his nerves, he got up, directing a nod towards Kevin. “Thank you,” he murmured softly before making his way to the elevator to the left, pushing the button to the third floor once he had boarded.

The ride wasn’t a long one, and before he knew it, he was following the directions he had been given to the gym leader's office. Upon arrival, he would be met with a spacious room filled with memorabilia of Raikou, which was definitely not something he was expecting.

Knowing there were more important matters, he refocused his mind, focusing his mind on the other things he could see instead. Like the larger-than-average Umbreon and the large Raikou Plush, the gym leader was currently on.

Putting the Umbreon in the back of his mind, he made his way closer to the gym leader. Seeing that he seemed lost in thought, he realized he would probably have to speak up.

“Umm, excuse me, I’m here for the interview,” he said, forcing himself to speak at a moderate volume.[break] Josh Devlin

He was worried.

Not that that was actually new, considering he was an anxious person. But this had nothing to do with one of his normal anxieties.

No, he was worried because he had seen the hide or hair of his boss for the past few days. That was worrying since the gym leader hadn’t mentioned going anywhere.

His worry had been so great that he had pushed aside his usual nerves to ask around. I'm hoping that Josh Devlin might’ve told someone something. No such luck. Instead, he had only gotten more questions than answers.

Others were missing as well.

He didn’t like this at all. But he knew he couldn’t fly into a panic. No, he had to contribute to finding the missing people in Hoenn. In these kinds of situations, it was best to start small. He would focus on finding Josh first.

After deciding to look for Josh, he put out word of his plans for a search party. He had been expecting to wait for what felt like forever to receive a response, so he was surprised when he received a response not even an hour later.

Waiting for his partner for the mission, he thought of any place the gym leader could be. Which led him to branching out to area’s outside of Mauville, places that could be easy to get lost in if one weren’t careful.[break] Shalin Nariya

While it was true he tended to favor certain types when it came to the Pokémon he owned, that didn’t mean he loved other Pokémon any less. So when he heard of a job opening at the Mauville gym as a Pokémon caretaker, he immediately leapt at the opportunity.

That had been a few days ago.

Now that it was nearing the time for the interview, he was wondering if this was a mistake.

He paced back and forth in his living room, his friend watching with a mix of concern and amusement.

It was only after his friend pointed out the time that he would come to a halt. His friend was right. If he didn’t get ready now, he would run the risk of running late. And that would be very bad.

Taking a deep breath to calm himself, he nodded before going to the bathroom to get ready.

A quick shower and a fresh change of clothes, and soon enough, he was ready to go.

With a wish for good luck from his friend, he hopped on the back of Sora, his Hisuian Braviary, and made his way to Mauville gym. Touching down, he ran a quick hand through his hair to straighten it out before making his way into the gym and waiting for when the gym leader could see him since, despite his worry about running late, he had arrived a little earlier than the scheduled time.[break] Josh Devlin
