Petalburg Woods now lay under siege from the poisonous pestilence. Michael and his team did not hesitate to arrive and mitigate the threat from the plagued Grass-Type Pokemon that called the area home. Eimyrja's Fire-Type moves acted as a cleansing flame to rebuke the disease. Water-Type moves from Cobalt and Jaws helped to douse the fires before they could cause harm the flora and fauna.

The flittering fairy of the forest caught Michael's attention. The Ranger frowned at the sight of the Toxic Chain. Still, he found himself enamored to be in the presence of the Lord of Time and Nature.

Words escaped the Cadet. He could see that the green onion fairy was in pain and in shock. Though he recognized the Celebi was not turned like the other Pokemon by the chains that bound their wills. Hoping to aid, Michael offered some Lava Cookies to the Legendary.

"Please, take one," he pleaded. "I'll do what I can to get these to the other afflicted Pokemon."

No one ever said that the life of a Pokemon Ranger would be all sunshine and rainbows. There was, like with any occupation, a darker side with assisting Pokemon wildlife. This was true for each of the emergencies that popped up throughout the Region. But this, Michael felt, was the sickening, twisted icing on top of a poison cake.

These poor, delusional Rabsca fought vigorously against anyone who dared to threaten their young. They had no way of knowing that the Toxic Chains had corrupted their young, killing them in the process. The cruelty of their fate made Michael's stomach turn and his heart wrench from the deep sorrow he felt. Was there no other way?

Remembering the villagers of Lavaridge Town, Michael hastily searched his bag. From it, he retrieved some Lava Cookies. There was hope for these Pokemon, yet. Maybe, just maybe, if he could cure these Pokemon of the poison that corrupted them, they would realize there was no life left in the orbs they carried.

The Ranger tossed some Lava Cookies toward the nearby group of Rabsca. With luck, his plan would work. And if not? He'd have to free the insect Pokemon of their suffering.

Speak of the Devil, and they shall appear! Except, not quite, as a school of Carvanha threatened to turn the sea to crimson with their hunt. Some in the community might deem their act as cold and cruel. Who would hunt such an adorable Dewott, anyway? The Cadet, on the other hand, understood the nature of survival. He felt a pang of guilt when the Captain seemed to act on instincts based upon emotion. Pokemon in the wild had no luxury of people feeding and caring for them. These Carvanha were being cheated out of a meal that could very well mean the difference between life and death.

Michael hoped to raise a Sharpedo, but not like this. He held close to his heart a policy of recruiting willing Pokemon. He approached the edge of the beach after his superior and watched as the Carvanha school fled back to the safety of the waves.

"Hey, Captain," he started, "I get that we're supposed to help Wild Pokemon. But don't you think we ended up hurting those Carvanha by interfering with their feeding habits?"

The Cadet then noticed one of the Carvanha had returned. They looked defeated and hungry. Seeing them like this tugged on Michael's heartstrings. He pulled out a Pokeball and some Pokemon food, then knelt by the lapping waves as he called to it.

"We're sorry for taking away your chance to eat," he apologized with a gentle smile. "Tell you what, though. I'd love to recruit you to my team. I'd take care of you and make sure you're well fed. How does that sound?"

Amusement pooled inside of Michael as he crossed his arms. He felt a quick sensation of envy in his mind. He was not proud of allowing himself to feel such things, so he swiftly quelled it as soon as it began. The Cadet instead focused on the spectacle, smiling to himself as he observed Shalin's antics.

This time, the Ranger Captain performed her feats with the help of her Flygon. Staying stuck to their now nigh invisible wings was a feat in of itself. It reminded Michael of his first meeting with the Captain on Route 118.

Another round of applause was in order! With a cheer and a broadening grin, Michael offered his appreciation for the show which Shalin and her partners offered the onlookers. Witnessing how in-sync she was with her team helped nudge Michael's opinions of Sygna Suits to grow to be more open-minded.

A worried scowl remained etched in the Ranger Cadet’s face. Incidents with the Toxic Chains arose as plagues one after another throughout Hoenn. No incident was worse than the other, and yet, Michael couldn’t shake a feeling in his gut. There was some source of this strange power, but what was it?

Activity by the trio of statues drew his awareness. Enthralled Trainers covered the stony surfaces with the very Toxic Chains that covered them like sores. Small streams of crimson from the chains cascaded down each of the icons before pooling on the ground at their feet. Michael grimaced. The sight of blood didn’t make him shy away, even with his queasy stomach. But knowing that the people were ripping their own skin just to adorn the statues made him uneasy. Was it the Mochi’s doing? Did each consumption draw the host nearer to the ledge of madness with each bite?

“Those statues,” Michael mused. “They’re worshiping them. Why? Why attach those chains to them? Does it give the statues power? Are the statues the problem?”

Those unaffected by the Mochi Madness got to work on making the statues crumble. This, of course, caused the affected Pokemon and their Trainers to fly to their defense. Michael got right to action in defending the others against the threat. His team had no ability to destroy the stone structures, so crowd control would be his task today.

Michael watched helplessly as his Charmander partner slid backward on the ground on all fours. Being hit with that Tinkaton's hammer did not look pleasant in the slightest. Wincing, he attempted to strategize how to beat the toxic foe.

The Cadet Ranger then realized something. Not only did the Toxic Chains ensnare the hammer and the Pokemon's arms, but thorns covered the surface of the weapon as well. An epiphany occurred.

"Wait," Michael thought, "thorns are plants. They should be weak to fire! Eimyrja! Hit 'em with Inferno!"

Eimyrja shook her head to free herself from her dizziness. Growling, she prepared her fiery attack. "Charrrrr...!"

"Mander!"

A stream of flames billowed forth to engulf the threatening Tinkaton! As Michael theorized, the fires burned away the thorns! As Tinkaton was a Fairy and Steel-Type, the flames did little with the Pokemon themself. However, the fires also managed to burn away the Toxic Chains.

The Ranger Cadet and his Charmander companion hanged onto the soaked ropes of the bridge as a sudden gale threatened to send them to a watery grave below. Tropical rain continued to downpour, each drop slamming into the pair and the Pokemon attempting to escape the horrendous weather as they ran across the slippery bridge. Michael was not only worried for his safety, but for the wellbeing of the Charmander and the flame at the tip of her tail. As much as he wanted to keep her in her Pokeball, Eimyrja refused as she, too, wanted to help.

"This weather's no good!" Michael shouted over the blustery winds. "We'll need to clear it up! Use Sunny Day, Eimyrja!"

Despite being near soaked to the bone, the Charmander gave a confident nod to her human. She bellowed toward the sky above. In moments, the rain subsided and the darkened clouds parted while returning to their normal white color.

The sun's rays shined brightly down upon the area as the weather cleared. Steadily, the two made their way across the bridge and entered the clearing beyond the chasm. Michael and Eimyrja could not believe their eyes.

The legendary Pokemon, Latias, lay hindered by Toxic Chains. Their partner, Latios, frantically hovered over their friend. The pair knew what they had to do. Others who had come to help were targeting the chains themselves. His feelings of whimsy and wonder became overshadowed by the guild and despair he felt for the Legendary.

"Sorry, Latias," Michael pleaded, "but we need to get those chains off of you. Eimyrja! Use Slash to break those chains! Be careful not to hurt them, okay?"

"Char Char!" Eimyrja acknowledged!

The determined fire salamander charged forth to assist her fellow partnered Pokemon. With a mighty slash with glowing claws, she attempted to break the chains that held the Latias down!
