"You probably know that already," Cato repeats, parroting Aris' words with a mocking tone of voice— as important as the man thinks he is, Cato's seen him at his lowest. It's only been a minute or two, and he's already started to talk himself up to the poor girl. "—Knock it off."

Shifting their shoulder, they press their elbow into Aris's side. It's a subtle sign of affection, something that's reserved for a friend, rather than a co-worker; despite the exasperation echoing throughout their voice, it's more than clear that the two of them are close.

Aris was once his savior, too— as much as it pains Cato to admit it, he owes him plenty more than a couple chores once a week.

"—On about the chores, first-thing. He's only getting like this 'cause he's mad that I don't do the laundry every day. He can't deal with the fact that I don't wash his favorite suit first-thing in the morning."

If Cato's ever told him that to his face, he can't quite remember.

"Here, here. Can... take you on a tour, or something. We'll teach you, if you need it, so don't start panicking about what you bring to the table."

Turning halfway on their heel, they gesture towards Cassidy, in an attempt to usher her to follow him. It's not much, perhaps much less than what she's used to, but to the two of them, Icarus was home. It'd be enough.

Cato's been looking for something small— when the familiar humming of an Electabuzz alerts him to a Pokemon's presence, a shiver runs down his spine. If he squints hard enough, doesn't that look like a menacing look in its' eyes?

Swallowing back his words, he doesn't engage with the Pokemon, instead electing to turn on his heel— run, run, run, escape— in the hopes of finding something a little more entry-level.

(...Electabuzz is pretty damn entry-level, though, isn't it? What's this all about?)

For Arceus's sake, at least it's the nice one.

Frowning to themselves, Cato reaches up a hand to rub at the edge of his eye, poking and prodding at a fresh bruise, before glancing upwards with a guilty expression. Another day, another mission failed— another defeat met at the hands of a curious ranger, and a couple more stolen goods lost in the process.

Usually, they'd have been a bit more stubborn about their many failures— but there's something about Tempest, so mysteriously kind, so seemingly careful with what he says, that he can't help but feel like he'd disappointed the man.

"I'll do better next time." It's an empty promise, made through gritted teeth, as their head turns down to, once again, return to their usual routine of staring at the floor.

"...You're just so good at it." Fighting. Battling. Getting your blood pumping. It's almost strange, how someone so gentle and nurturing can push himself to the bitter end. That, unlike Cato, there's no sign of cowardice between his eyes. He doesn't run.

"How?" ...How do you do it? Keep standing like that, all the while?

Route 102, at ten o'clock at night; the trails surrounding Oldale Town aren't usually crowded, and even less does the opportune stranger travel after the sun's already set. Cato, clutching a bag at his side, a couple loose Pokemon eggs poking out through the opened flap, sticks out like a sore thumb.

By the way they immediately move to cover the bag with a spare hand, shoulders tensing defensively at a ranger's arrival, it's clear that they've been up to no good.

Eyes narrowed, their free hand clenches itself around a Pokeball, albeit slightly trembling. You can't run away from a trainer battle— clearly, they're not all-too confident in their battling skills, by the way they keep reminding themselves.

"Whatever I'm doing— what happened to minding your own business, huh?"

...Even for a team Rocket representative, this place is pretty sketchy, isn't it? There's only a couple Pokeballs strapped to Cato's hip, but they've steeled themselves for an opportunity to catch something new— even if they are starting to feel their palms getting sweaty, the more time they spend wandering through the abandoned plant.

It's dark, and they narrow their eyes to squint ahead of them, hand tightly gripped around their Zangoose's Pokeball, prepared for a fight.

If they were lucky enough, they'd be approached by a wild Pokemon, something small and easy enough to take down in one go— at the very least, you can run away from a wild encounter.

Wandering trainers, not so much.

"...Hello? Anyone, uh... home? Friendly?"

The girl is looking for Aris— the top dog, the owner, the silver-tongued superstar, the cream of the crop— but as the code is entered, and the door she's standing in front of creaks open, she's met with anything but.

Narrowed red eyes, that compliment her own. A glower permanently etched across their expression; a scar, thin yet prominent, carved into their cheek. There's a coldness to them, not unlike Cassidy's, albeit less scared, the stern expression of someone who knows what they're doing.

Judgemental, almost, from a first glance. A discerning eye, as if the stranger hasn't already been vetted far enough.

—It's a tension, thankfully, that breaks almost as soon as Cato opens their mouth, turning their head towards the front of the room with narrowed eyes. They yell, and it's loud, but it's not at her.

"Aris! She's here! You were supposed to have the room upstairs ready an hour ago!"

Eye twitching, they hold a hand up to their face, shaking their head.

"Knowing him, he's remade your bed five times over. He'll be here in just a second, if he doesn't want to get dragged down by the ear."

A pause, as they raise an eyebrow, finally turning their gaze back to meet the strange girl's, their newest recruit. Awkwardly, he holds out a hand to shake, albeit still glancing over his shoulder to keep watch for Aris' arrival.

"...Cato. That's my name. I do the papers."

Almost immediately, Cato sighs, pinching at the bridge of his nose. "This kind've question really makes me seem like a kid. I'm twenty-six."

"...My boss, I'd guess? We're in the same line of work," counterfeiting, "—And it's nice to see someone else succeed in what you do. It's a pretty standard answer. I don't... like looking up to people."

"#2— your back's against the wall. you're down to your last pokemon. which pokemon is it, and why?"

"I'm starting to feel like this one's just meant to intimidate me...?? Smeargle's my first, and probably the bulkiest, as a result... but when it comes down to it, can't you just flee if a battle's not going your way?"

"...What? Only with wild Pokemon? Really?"

"#3— what’s the best and worst relationship advice you've ever received or given?"

At this one, he grins a bit. Clearly, he's still proud of it. "Don't really think a lot about romance, but Aris does. Every time he brings someone back, I tell him to dump them, 'cause he always gets all weird about it... and he never takes it, but it's some damn good advice."

"#4— describe a new paradox pokémon. go crazy! the whackier the better!"

"...Do you think, in the future, a Ditto's still just... Ditto?" He doesn't seem all that original with his answer, but he's trying his best to come up with something. Come back in a month or two.

"#5— would you still love a loved one if they were a wurmple?"

Cato pauses, to check if this is actually a survey question or a frenzied text message from somebody else, before answering. "...I'd probably crush them. Bugs freak me out."

"#6— do you have a quote/proverb/lyrics that changed your life? if yes, what is it?"

"It's always five o'clock somewhere...?"

"What, do I look like the type of person to start parroting someone else's words?" How ironic.

"#7— what's the biggest lie you've ever told?"

"If you lie for long enough, it'll become, to you, the truth. That's what I live by. No such thing as telling a lie if it's true somewhere. That being said, I've never lied in my entire life. Not once."

Cato's eyebrows furrow, and their nose wrinkles. It's the expression of someone who's still not quite sure how to bring a little more joy to themselves, no less the whole world. "Skip. This one's corny."

"If I really had to think about it... someone else with a Smeargle, so mine can Sketch their Sketch, and it'll continue forever in an eternal Sketchobouros."

"Completely raw."

Cato's never killed anyone before— besides the mood— but, somehow, this question still feels a little like he's being implicated. "Probably? It's not something I think about a lot, but I think we've all got the ability to. If I 'have' to, sure."

"#12— would you want to fight one thousand durant sized ursarings or one ursaring sized durant?"

"Eeeuugh, I just talked about bugs! There's no way I'm fighting a giant one! I'd just... hit all the little Ursarings with a book and be done with it!"

"#13— what was your last dream about?"

"...Huh. I'm one of those people who never really remembers what they dream. It's a little odd, right? I think it's just a little bit of creative block, but I only ever wake up feeling like I'm hungry, or tired... so I guess I can't really answer this all that well. My imagination's been on a bit of a downturn."

"#14— what is your purpose?"

Who are you, my psychiatrist...?

"I'd like to create something, someday, that's entirely my own. That's my purpose."

"#15— if you had to remove one city or town from hoenn, which one would it be?"

"Don't know why it has to be Hoenn. I don't think any of us here would really miss Lumiose, right? Right?"

With a small sigh, he crosses his arms over his chest, and the recording stops; although, as a small section for suggestions pops up before their submissions, he types in a quick, deep, well thought-out question.
