Nothing good. He wasn't so easily discouraged, though. There was someone off in the distance with a Clamperl in their hands. They were determined to be among the winners with a Clamperl in hand. Taking in a deep breath, they dove underneath yet again. Psyduck helped push them down and into the reef to avoid rising back up because of the lungful of air in their chest.

OK, so they'd been a little cocky last time.

They'd nearly fallen off the Mantine mid-twist. That had forced her to get her head back into the game. She was nearly on the leaderboard. She just had to hold tight and stay focused. Trying to celebrate too early would throw her straight into the ocean. She had to do the twist just as she had before.

Clover needed to get her hands on a passho, ASAP. She wanted a z-move for her own pokemon. She wondered what kind of powerful dances Oricorio could pull off or what unusual feats her Archen would be capable of. The sky was the limit, it seemed. But that kind of thing seemed a ways away, also. She wasn't sure she could push her pokemon far enough to accomplish such feats just yet. [break][break]

"That's awesome," they breathed out. "I hope your coronation goes well. If I'm lucky, you'll see me with a little z-glove before long." She thumbed Oricorio's pokeball absently. "I should stop by the pokecenter for Oricorio to get looked at, though. I'll see you around, Mr. Gym Leader." They beamed at him. "And if you get another Pyroar, you should name 'em Clover after me."

Clover paled at the options. They weren't ready to develop a criminal record, but they felt sore about giving up so easily. It seemed obvious they weren't going to accomplish their goals today, but leaving with nothing made him feel like a quitter. He considered what else to add before coming out with something honest. "I'm trying to bring out Kyogre." He paused, thinking. "Or one of Nature's Giants." There was no Regirock-equivalent for the sea as far as he knew, but that didn't mean the Giants wouldn't respond to a natural disaster outside of their element. [break][break]

He held his tongue on why. Getting into it would make him look crazy. They didn't suspect a Ranger would understand the importance of divine intervention to save Hoenn's environment given that Rangers did a little bit of wildlife rescue and considered their job complete.

Clover hadn't known what to expect. [break][break]

His hands came up to cover his ears a second too late, but he still blocked the brunt of the loud, loud sound. He gave himself a moment to collect himself before straightening and removing his hands. "Wow." They were at a loss for words. They'd never seen a z-move before. [break][break]

Clover blinked at his question, then looked down to see Oriocorio's dizzy, disconnected movements. "I think that might've been a bit much for Ori." He tapped at the Oricorio's pokeball to return it. "Still, that was crazy. I've never seen anything like it. So, only some Pyroar can do that?"

Clover took a moment to catch their breath. The explosion had been sudden. She felt her body wracked with adrenaline and slowly coming down. It left something uneasy churning in her gut, but she did her best to breathe through it. She had done crazier things than handle a little explosion, so she needed to just get over it. Still, they came close to Tropius and wrapped their arms around him, squeezing. "Good job, yeah?" They nuzzled their face into his side, taking a moment to regulate. Things were okay.

Clover broke the surface. He took in a generous breath. Psyduck took longer to return to surface, leisure. "Nothing good." Their disappointment was clear to hear. Psyduck, for his part, just looked at him with confusion. "I know, I know. We'll just have to keep trying." They really wanted to find a Clamperl. Some folks already had, as was clear with them swimming back to shore with their prize. Clover wanted to be one of them.

Three for three.

Was it beginner's luck or the psyduck's interference? As much as they believed in themselves, this seemed insanely lucky. Still, they didn't seem to feel psychic interference. Wouldn't they know if psyduck was using psychic on them? She wasn't sure. She would have to test her theories when she got out of the water. For now, she was going to push things as far as she could.

She hummed thoughtfully at his response about how silly it'd be for them both to be clueless. "Fair enough." She perked up at the description. "Yellow's such a good color. Underrated." They kept their head on a swivel for such an herb, trying to think of something to ask him that wouldn't involve his age. Well, specifically. Clover was used to their elders telling stories nonstop, but people outside of the Hoyeon were a little less talkative. [break][break]

"Does it emit gas?" She pointed at the yellow gas billowing over a large white rock beside the path. Without waiting for an answer, she hurried along the side of it to look -- but it was a Weezing instead. "Oop, wasn't expecting a little friend!" It generated a smokescreen, so Clover rolled backwards out of the range and tossed out Archen's pokeball, giving him the opportunity to use tailwind and clear the smoke.

An explosion knocks him off of Tropius. He flies in the air for only a few feet before tumbling into the ground, narrowing avoiding eating dirt but at the cost of a scrape on his chin. He doesn't fully stop; instead, he uses the momentum to push himself to his feet and bounce on them, rotating to look for the threat. [break][break]

Tropius is already engaged with it, picking the Baltoy up with his mouth and tossing it back on the ground. The Baltoy gathers psychic energy for a return assault, but Tropius stomps on the psychic until it's firmly indented in the ground. Such a violent and explosive pokemon could work well for their future plans, so they reluctantly toss a pokeball before looking over themselves for other injuries.

Two for two. It was stupid lucky for someone who had no experience in the ocean. Psyduck seemed to not quite understand its own position. It was just happy to be in the water. If Clover did fall into the waves, they might be their own based off of Psyduck's aloof behavior. The pressure sat in the back of her mind, but she did her best to focus on the task at hand. She didn't have long to go before she aced the competition.

Gligar slashed at Tropius' feet, but the giant responded immediately. He stomped. The gligar got pushed into the ground. Clover startled at the sudden movement and turned over to look at Tropius' feet. Tropius repeated the motion a few times until Gligar stayed down. Clover sighed. "You could have been nicer 'bout it," he murmured as he tossed a pokeball at it. "This one looks like a potential friend." They also liked its energy.

Diving wasn't so bad. Psyduck stayed close to protect him from any pokemon beneath the surface. More importantly, Psyduck tracked how much air Clover had and assisted him in getting beneath the surface far enough to collect goodies. Psyduck's help made it possible for Clover to take deep breaths because the water type would drag them low enough. Otherwise, the lesser amount of air would stress them out given their inability to really swim.

Tropius murmured as he carried Clover on his back. He kept stopping to taste the leaves of different berry trees. Clover would complain, but she was draped across his saddle on her back, looking up at the sky as he travelled. The calming cadence of his steps, and even his stops, made lounging a relief. She felt the desire to sleep reach out for her, but she wanted to make the most of her safari time. It's just that Tropius made it so easy to doze...

"WAHOO!!" His magikarp splash had been effortless. Beginner's luck was real. They pumped a fist in the air to celebrate alongside their whooping. Psyduck stayed close but its confused expression was a little offensive. Or, perhaps, it was the same one it always wore. Regardless, nothing could kill Clover's confidence. They decided to follow up with a different trick for variety.
