Petalburg kind of had a morale issue. Rocket had won, but there was so much work to do with rebuilding and so many displaced civilians that it felt exhausting to stick around. The people that couldn't evacuate were largely unhappy, and their unhappiness was catching. [break][break]

Some of the arts had resumed, so there were small concerts and performances throughout the town. Clover had come to see some spoken word and maybe catch a comedy show, but the artistic renaissance of the town left them feeling inspired to revisit some of their writing, too. Oricorio works through some footwork beside the bench as Clover reads their writing aloud softly: "Even the iron still fears the rot, hiding from something I cannot stop..." [break][break]

He shook his head. "Maybe I should drop the pencil and pick up dancing like you, eh?" Oricorio clapped her wings together in excited agreement as Clover tucked their notepad into their jacket.

Morning sun fell over them, an odd break from the overcast day. "You see where that's coming from?" Shuckle looked at Clover with a neutral expression. Right. [break][break]

A pidove made itself known, landing at Clover's feet and cocking its head curiously. "Hey, little fella." The pidove pecked at the grass. "You want a berry?" Shuckle's mouth fell open in betrayal, but Clover pulled a pecha out for the flying type. "You've had your fill," he asserted to his Shuckle. "Relax a sec." Pidove consumed the berry with the same ferociousness as Shuckle before chirping a pleased song.

Clover breaks into a big grin. "Clover." He offers a hand, but the dispute turns his head. He's thinking of the next best plan of action when Marvie jumps into the thick of it. Admittedly, it takes them a few moments to wrap their head around what they've seen. "Are you a pokemon tamer?" He comes in close to pet the Clodsire's broad head, catching it once it seems to have fully relaxed. [break][break]

"Usually, I only see Hoyeons get so close to pokemon in their native environment." The native people of Hoenn lived inside nature rather than outside of it. "Well, them and Rangers." He didn't see an armband on her to signify she's a Ranger, so maybe she was a behavioralist. Archen clawed his way up Clover's back to perch on his shoulder, assessing Marvie openly.

One moment, she's critiquing Shuckle. The next, the rock pokemon has been blown off the face of the earth with a high horsepower blur. "It's been an honor serving with you." Clover pairs the faux-stoic remark with a pantomime of taking a hat off his head and holding it to his chest. The sounds of a scuffle occur off-screen - or at least, away from Clover's eyesight. A moment later, Shuckle comes crawling back with a small scratch and a victorious expression. [break][break]

"Doing alright?" The Shuckle opened its mouth to reveal small blue-purple gunk which can only be the remains of an oran berry. Ah, so the healing it offers might have given Shuckle a leg-up in that fight. "Don't gloat," he chastises. Shuckle refuses, of course, and Clover resigns to searching the bushes for the fainted Cufant to catch.

Shuckle gummed an oran as the two walked the safari. Clover felt peckish after an expedition and not before, but Shuckle could nibble on berries any time of day. In fact, he was pretty sure he'd heard her at like 2AM. She'd gotten into his backpack. He'd barely woken to the sound of it before falling asleep again, so he supposed it was his fault for not stopping her. The shelled pokemon worked up an appetite for one with a famously slow metabolism. "Chew quieter," he whispered. They didn't want to spook any wild pokemon.

Clover covers his mouth as the Rotom gathers the poisonous gas. "Good thinking," they comment, glad to have more breathing room. "I had no idea Rotom could do that." He was pleased to learn something new, but that contentedness was overshadowed by the anxiety he felt over their proximity to the unpredictable Zorua. Clover snapped a photo of it on their phone, then tucked the device away. [break][break]

"Well, the haunted house delivered, but not in the sense I think the viral post was talking about." Social media had blown up with spooky avenues, but this one was more dangerous than scary. Her future social media post and probably der's would set the record straight, certainly. They sensed Fenelle's interest in the Zorua ran deep enough for dem to want to catch it. "Maybe there are more toxic chained pokemon in the area, but I think we should call it here and revisit with stronger pokemon. At least, I need stronger pokemon." Pointedly, he didn't look at Spewpa and the annoyed expression she was most certainly making.

"Spit that out." Clover put his hands on his hips to emphasize his annoyance. Of course, Archen paid it no mind. The two of them had been partners for far too long for the fossil pokemon to sweat Clover's opinion. The two locked eyes, daring each other, but Clover broke the stillness first. They lunged and wrestled with Archen to try and free the pebbles out of his mouth. "You! Spit! It! Out!"[break][break]

Archen squawked with a shrill tone that, honestly, sounded like he was being murdered rather than wrestled with. But the cries of distress forced him to drop the pebbles. "Was that so hard?" Archen squawked indignantly. Clover released him and dusted off her hands, sighing in a brief relief that was interrupted by the presence of another trainer. Clover perked up at the sight of her though, happy to have company in the creepy tunnel. "Hey, yeah I am! I haven't been in the tunnel before, but I figured there would be some helpful pokemon in here. If you know your way around, I'd be happy to follow you."[break][break]

The tunnel held too many splitting routes to be a comfortable place to travel. Of course, that was why most didn't visit without some sort of guide.

Still, her fists shook by her side and she felt the very uncommon sensation of betrayal. "I don't know how we normally do things," 'we' referring to Rocket, "but this is not how Hoyeons grieve." This did not seem like the man that had helped him survive against Regieleki. The one who had explained Stakatakas and otherwise been a fun mentor into the world of ultra beasts and wormholes. Either Petalburg had changed him more than they'd guessed, or he hadn't been the man they'd thought him to be, ever. [break][break]

If Clover died, seeing Rockets there out of an expectation or duty would be horrific. It stung that someone with as many friends as Tempest was stuck with this fate, too. "I think you were right before. You should leave."

The man before them is not the same historian they'd worked with in the ultra plant. Appearance had nothing to do with the change when everything of substance lied within his dark heart. Clover fought the urge to cry, if only because the reaction might give Howard's words more weight than they deserved right now. [break][break]

He seems to want to offer comfort, but he alludes to some longer, darker history between him and Tempest that will undoubtedly portray Tempest in an unfavorable light. The implication of Howard's words aren't lost on her, but they're irrelevant. It's poor taste to disrespect the dead, and during a rite, at that. "So why are you here?" What was the point? Was it his duty? No other Rocket elites were here besides Cillian. She hated the idea of Howard seeing Cillian, then, if he felt so insincerely heartbroken at Tempest's passing.

Clover's appetite has been sated enough. As a youth, they've already been served. It was hard to pick at the food, given how close this death was to him. It's been a long time since they've lost close family, and despite the brevity of his relationship with Temp, it was a close relationship. Tempest was going to be the future Sea Sachem, and now there was nothing. [break][break]

Her lip curls at Howard's response. "How can you say that?" She knocks at his hands as they retreat, angry. Disbelief is hard to parse in a grief-addled mind, and they struggle to put the pieces together. [break][break]

Why is he here if not for Tempest? If it was for the sake of appearing, he would've made a cursory round before stepping away. Clover shakes his head. "How can you say that?"

Petalburg's recent takeover meant there were constant rounds of Rocket guards patrolling the perimeter. Any assault on a guard put everyone on high alert because it could be the beginning of a League assault. Naturally, when one guard at the back of a patrol group was struck down, it was cause for an investigation. [break][break]

"Well," Clover said as he and Kasper stood over the body, "this is new. You ever done an investigation like this? I'm no detective." Still, they were thrilled at the prospect of a new responsibility. They wanted to solve the case and help out the organization - and put this guy's spirit to rest in some way. Oricorio stood by Clover's said, almost inappropriately bright against the dim scene. [break][break]

There was a burning stench in the air, but the man's clothes weren't scorched.

How nice of Temp to bring Howard around. From the brief time she'd known the deceased, he'd been a very welcoming and approachable man despite his title and the expectations of it. It shouldn't have surprised her to hear that Howard had been brought around before, but it did. He seemed so out of place. [break][break]

"Don't go yet," they insisted. "Those close to the departed tend to grab a cup of seawater after the rite. We hold onto it like a shepherd. It's - it's really nice." They deflated a little. Exhaustion hung over them when they stopped moving, a ghost that caught up when they let momentum slip between their fingers. "Or, at least, have some fish tail? There's a lot of food prepared out here."[break][break]

Surely, Howard wasn't going to leave already? "Don't go empty handed. It's bad luck."
