Clover fixed Shuckle with a look that had the berry-eating pokemon stumble over to June to start pulling the web off with its gummed mouth. Clover couldn't help themselves as they closed in on the woman and saw her reach for another berry: Clover slapped her hand away from the plant. Then they froze. [break][break]

"I - oh Mother, I'm so sorry. That's, I don't even know what came over me." He flushed red through his brown Hoyeon skin. "But, uh, please don't eat those. They'll make you sick until they full ripen." Clover fiddled with his fingernails instead of looking her in the eye. "The chesto berries should be ripe right now, if you're okay with dry berries. Uh. Or I can offer you some pickled roots, if you like Hoyeon food." He tended to carry a jar of the stuff around, since his mom was a worrywart.

"Hi, Mr. Grigori!" Clover had a pep in their step. She hadn't visited Petalburg much, but she was interested in seeing how the captured city was operating. "Whatcha mean? You think I'm a crop circle deviant?" They laughed at the imagery. They didn't get up to a lot of delinquent behaviors, though they occasionally had to ransack a shop or something basic and street-level to further some Rocket operation. [break][break]

There was a vague humming in the area. They didn't think it was a bug. [break][break]

"Let's get going, yeah? I think this'll be like a corn maze. We need your height." He spoke solemnly, stoically, but it quickly broke for a grin. "Tell me about your construction stuff while we walk! I wanna know about cement."

"Nature," Clover clarified. "The Guardians work to protect Nature. Moreso than other legendaries because the Guardians are tools of Earth Mother." The Hoyeon faith system wasn't necessarily well-known all throughout the region, but the Hoenn natives were bunched up in hotspots like their own community in Fallarbor. "My people took care of this region long ago, though the subjugation from the government prior to the current had left us in a poor position to take care of the land."[break][break]

He shrugged. "The League tries, but not very hard. They've been poisoning the region." The Guardians could fix things, but Kit's question was a fair one. "Fang is the most pokemon-aligned. Pokemon are valuable to the ecosystem, of course. Since Dragons are some of the oldest pokemon, it makes sense to me that Fang is made in a similar image."

Shuckle is the perfect companion for berry hunting. Clover's been keeping a close eye on her given the possession she experienced a week prior, which caused her to bite Cillian Quinn's ankles. Since that night, though, Shuckle had been behaving normally. The shelled pokemon was gnawing on a Kasib berry as the two walked the community garden. [break][break]

The bushes and trees are alluring, but they don't all grow to harvest at the same time. The Occa berries are too early in season, not yet ripe, and that means the chemicals inside are prime for food poisoning. [break][break]

As he watches a blonde woman pull one from a bush, it occurs to Clover that that might not be public knowledge. "Stop!" A hand darts out dramatically, fearful the woman's about to eat it. Shuckle, for her part, spits out the half-chewed Kasib in her mouth and produces a sticky web that's poorly-aimed and lands at the woman's feet in an unimpressive glob.

Sorrowful Hoyeon faces fill the area. The mourning rite at sea has been complete, leaving folks to talk about the legacy Tempest has left behind. Many swarm his father, Tulio, but Clover knows better than to try and do so herself. He likely won't remember all that's been said to him anyhow. It will pass as a blur. She suspects he'll only remember the fire as it danced on the water. [break][break]

It stands to them when they catch a familiar face in the distance. He is not Hoyeon, nor Cillian. Clover races through the crowd at a speed just a notch above appropriate, until they're standing face to face with Mr. Howard. "Why are you hiding out here?" The question is more curious than accusatory. Some people are offput by Hoyeon customs, so they can understand hesitation to participate. "I can introduce you to some folks if that's what has you caught up. Cillian Quinn is around here somewhere, if you're looking for him."

Cillian Quinn

Clover hears what Cillian doesn't say. The negative space of the conversation is like the composition of a painting: it is a part of the art, too. "Is - do you want to go home?" They don't know how else to frame the question. Cillian's place is filled with relics of Tempest's life. Consequently, Cillian will have to look at all the space Temp doesn't take up any longer. The idea of it is bitter enough that even Clover feels a bit hollow at the thought. [break][break]

It dawns on them, too, that they've asserted home to be where your people are - and his is at sea on the mourning rite. Temp's body is elsewhere entirely. Cillian's home is a ghost. [break][break]

"What if you stay at my place instead? Mom makes some killer stews." She doesn't know the details of Temp's passing, just that his body could not be retrieved. It's clear that it wasn't a result of natural causes. She suspects, however, that the nature of it is not one where they can easily get revenge. More directly, she asks, "What can I do for you?" If there is someone to investigate or intimidate or hurt, she can do it. For Tempest. For Cillian.

Clover nudged Archen over onto the other shoulder. "I need to focus, dude, chill!" But this kind of activity was too laidback for the energetic fossil pokemon. "Wait til I get a bite at least." Archen was no little buddy like the kind they could find an online fishing game, but he was usually good company. Now, though, he was antsy and unhelpful. Like, at least generate some bonus fish, dude! [break][break]

Whatever. Clover was locking in, managing their breathing and imagining a tug on the line...

The Ranger's right about the fires in Petalburg. Those weren't deserved. He had heard that Mr. Howard had contributed greatly to what went down, but Clover hadn't had an opportunity to visit him and discuss his proximity to the Guardians, or even his recovery, since Petalburg happened. Clover's life was ripe with complications that kept them from the front lines -- and they intended to rectify that today. [break][break]

"Petalburg could've been handled differently," they conceded as the Garchomp's strike pushed Zarude back. The beast used jungle healing to recover. "But Petalburg isn't the League's to own. The government's overstepped, and they've done nothing but suffocate this region with bullshit policy." The Ranger would receive no other concession. The jungle that spawned around them healed Zarude and give him strength to hammer arm the Garchomp and follow it with a snarl. [break][break]

"Zarude can go all day." It was an unusual pokemon, but it was here because it was Clover's most ferocious. "I'm not some bloodthirsty animal. But if you insist on becoming my problem, I will have to be your solution." They felt uneasy about unnecessary casualties, but if he failed to bring back a win to Rocket, the organization could abandon him, and he wouldn't have access to the resources he needed to achieve his greater goals. [break][break]

It was all or nothing. Clover tossed another pokeball. "I can go all day. My reinforcements will be here long before yours." Oricorio appears. The closest apology Clover can muster is: "It's you or me."

Then, Oricorio generates a hurricane, the final window of opportunity Clover can offer the Ranger before they have to commit to killing her.

He set a better trap than he'd thought. The Ranger stepped onto a painful rock while trying to disrupt the sticky web - though once the Garchomp recovered, it was quick with a dragon breath. [break][break]

Shuckle fainted reluctantly. Clover appreciated her strength. The Leaguer's assumptions turned her appreciation into frustration. "I know my purpose! You're wrong!" She jabbed a thumb to her chest, then pointed an accusing finger. His voice gradually drips from fiery to ice cold. "I'm trying to save my home! It's the League that's eroding all that my people have. We'll never forget the bloodshed of Sootopolis." He returned Shuckle to her pokeball and tossed a new one directly at the Garchomp. Whether it struck or not, it would open to release Zarude. [break][break]

"I warned you." Zarude used power whip to wrap up the Garchomp. What would Cillian Quinn do if he were here? He was pretty scary. Clover didn't have much in the way of natural infamy or even the cool shadow stuff, so they had to stick with talking big. Their bark was worse than their bite, but they could hold their own in a battle. "Turn back and leave, or I'll bury you and your pokemon."

Un-chain it? Clover's expression freezes on one of shock at der suggestion. Oh, oh no, they should definitely not try that. "I think we should run away from the toxic chain pokemon, not touch it. What if it, like, super poisons us?" He didn't want to experience that kind of sick. He knew how horribly people took it months before. There'd been a pecha shortage. [break][break]

Rotom astonished it, and Clover knew doubling down would be their best call. "Stun it, Spew!" Spewpa launched stun spore at the flinching pokemon to hold Zorua in place. "Let's get out of here before it -" The purple-hued gas around them became more suffocating than before. Clover's lungs burned. "I can't clear this," he said between coughs.

She understands his reaction, and she pulls back to offer him more space. "There is no shame in sorrow," she says authoritatively, but softly. "I imagine this is, um, a lot." She turns to gesture vaguely at the clamor outside. "It isn't often that all three sect gather like this, but Tempest is really special." For the Sea Sachem to lose his son is more than reason enough for the other two sects to step up in this time of grief.[break][break]

"I was afraid you were gonna leave-leave. You weren't going yet, were you?" Her parents had instilled in her to be less touchy with those outside the Hoyeon as outsiders were reticent in comparison. Still, the idea of Cillian leaving early pained her if only because isolation was the worst medicine for grief. But that truth was difficult for them to put into words.
