Erin smiles, amused at Kenneth's words. As if he'd get to catch the pokémon she wanted. She's glad that the Mr. Mime showed up only because it protected the noibat that would soon be hers from Scarlett's fire. The salazzle's firepower is not to be underestimated. The mantine is recalled into its pokéball.

Usually, Erin would be battling it out with the pokémon in order to assert dominance, preparing them for when she weakened them and caught them. In the noibat's case, however... it's simply too cute to hurt.

"We're bringing this one with us, Siri," she informs, pointing at the pokémon in question.

Erin clicks her tongue to catch the noibat's attention. Her Porygon2 follows up with a

signal beam

. One finger is held up for it to perch on, much like she would do in falconry, but without the glove.

She doesn't have fresh fruit on her—didn't expect to run into a cute little noibat here. Luckily, the emulated echo that Siri emitted seems to be enough to lure it to them. Once perched up on her hand, the noibat stares curiously at Erin. She takes this as allowance to pet the fur on top of its nose.

The noibat closes its eyes, feeling as if it got tickled. "You're so cute," Erin whispers, and proceeds to lightly tap on its head once. The noibat blinks its eyes open again before taking flight. It aims straight for Erin's hair, looking to use it as hideout.

Hiding from what? Probably the strong smell of burning hair. Erin's hair lotion would definitely beat that sort of stench.

"That was unnecessarily distasteful." She gives the man a pointed look as she makes her way to the entrance. "You're gorgeous as always, though, Scarlett." The noibat's found its way to her shoulder now, though it still tries to hide from the man and his salazzle.

Erin laughs lightly at this. An empty pokéball is nudged at the noibat. "Come, you can hide here instead."

Trembling, Belle tries her best to return to the warmth of today's sunny afternoon, but she can't, she's out of control, the space where she used to be told her heart would one day appear aches so much.

If Pyrrhus got closer, he would be able to watch the same scene that she does. He would be able to hear the birds singing above. He would be able to see the yellow corpse, the only thing unmoving in her vision. He would even be able to feel the wind blowing against two salty tears.

Belle lets out a cry. As suddenly as the pain started, it stops. Sometime during her episode, she'd grabbed onto one of Pyrrhus's paws. "Pyrrhus?" she calls softly, her voice and she herself lost. Her gaze drifts down to their joined hands and that's when she realizes hers is no longer white.

Her other hand flies to her chest, where a red horn grows in place of the pain she felt before.

No hostility and no flinching back in surprise. Safe enough, she concludes. She may not recognize the man, just as she wouldn't have recognized most Rockets she's come across in this new region, but he doesn't seem to be a threat for the time being. Erin turns to face the newcomer.

The missing arm is noticed immediately, but her gaze doesn't linger. She'd rather have him thinking she didn't notice it.

The second intruder's response brings a smile to her face. That's more the kind of answer she was hoping for. She expected her conversation starter to eventually thin out some information. There's room for interpretation, of course, but already she has something to go off on.

She doesn't take the bait. Instead, she offers an idle comment as she scans both of their pokémon, not looking back at the trainers' faces to even watch their reactions. "Looks like we're here for the same reason, then. Though one of us may be overdressed."

An espeon and a noivern. Quite decent choices. Couldn't beat her own choice in companion, however. "Done rendering, Siri?"

over the last couple of minutes is all the confirmation she needs. Bright blue dots blink where the Porygon2 found structures of density different than concrete and light emissions of radiation. These would likely be salvageable devices.

Erin lets the others catch a glimpse of the map, mostly because she's showing off. The other reason is that she doesn't want to stay around long and the more hands on the job, the faster she'd get to report to HQ for her new mission.

Creating a new identity may sound easy by virtue of how often it's done. It turns out it's not. It turns out replacing an actual person's identity with this new fabricated one is even harder.

That's why there's two of them, she supposes.

Simply infiltrating the building turns out easier than expected. Thanks to references from her alma mater back in Unova, Erin and her associate were called in as consultants. They were let in through the front door, introduced to a few personalities within the company, and given a well-equipped office to do their job.

The room has two security cameras. She's not too worried about the cameras, though: recording audio without the consent of at least one of the two people in the room would be illegal, and anyone looking at them through the lens would only see two women looking at their screens.

Four clicks and a virtual machine is being set up. As soon as the secretary giving them their tour around the facility closes the door behind her, their plan starts. "Spoof it."

Erin hasn't been long in Hoenn. Only a matter of weeks, in fact. Despite that, she feels like it's been forever since she first set foot in this city of rubber and new promises. From pulling heists and vandalizing New Mauville to finding herself a new apartment and building a team of her liking, the young woman barely had any time for leisure nowadays.

Which isn't all too bad, honestly. It made her feel productive, despite the relative quiet on their boss' side.

She's on her way to receive details on a new mission, but figures there may be some hidden treasures buried beneath the broken down carcass of this city. Erin distinctly remembers the higher-ups being on permanent lookout for such resources.

Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, it seems she's not the only one to think that way.

"First dibs on anything interesting."

The Porygon2 levitating next to her offers an unintelligible robotic sound of its own. Though uncertain of their alliance, she knows of League officials trying to sneak in to steal what Rocket had stolen first. In a worst case scenario, her greeting—if one could even call it that—could appeal to both factions.

They don't have to see it to know that it's there. Some pokémon just had a presence so strong they needed no introduction. In this case, it's the loudness of its cry. And of everything else it did, really. She wonders how it's retained its hearing after living through three entire evolution stages with itself.

Maybe it didn't.

The exploud makes the grass under its feet

crunch

and somehow this noise is loud—louder than she's ever heard grass crack. Like a megaphone, it takes a sound and multiplies tenfold. It could be a useful skill, if used right.

"We're taking this one." Erin's words are final and the meowth would have to do everything in order to make her wishes happen.

Crunch

. This time it's not grass, but an innocent twig laying in its path. 24K finds another twig. He picks it up and launches it at the exploud. It bumps on its face, but does little else otherwise. It continues a slow approach. A failed

"24K, are you gonna take this seriously or not?"

Or is it? The exploud stops, stares at the offending meowth, and opens its mouth. The

uproar

that comes out of it is deafening. Erin is quick to cover her ears, and quicker to take a second of her pokémon out.

She hasn't given the honedge a name yet, so she opts for a generic one for the time being. "Sword, make it shut up."

The honedge rushes at the wild pokémon as if it had been thrown to stab it. In a sense, it had. Its blade makes a gash in the exploud's belly, deep enough to hurt but not enough to permanently damage any internal organs.

It's not benevolent; the honedge only wants an easy exit so that it can strike again. This time with the flat end of its blade, the honedge pretty much slaps the exploud on one of its pipes. The

metal sound

reverberates throughout the forest.

The tip of the honedge's blade points at its thick neck afterwards, threatening. Erin steps in, empty pokéball in hand. "You're coming with me. Might as well surrender now." The pokéball is tossed.

The man's answer is barely louder than a whisper. "I see," is all she offers in response. A first love is tough to get over, particularly so if their lives were taken early. Erin lets her train of thought wander to old memories of another life, but manages to catch herself before delving any deeper than the mental image of a ring.

His question brings her back to the present. "Hm?"

Erin is dressed for the cold, but she can feel the chill air even through the heavy layers. It's not that she doesn't feel it; rather, she's used to the characteristic temperature drop derived from being in close proximity to a ghost.

The cackle rings in the distance, at first. The warning sign of a powerful ghost lurking in the shadows.

She wonders if he realizes how comical his reactions are.

When the wave of ghosts makes themselves known, she doesn't lift a finger. Her gengar, previously invisible, is already on the move. The set of orders she issues is limited to a single word: "Fire." A circle of small blue

will-o-wisps

immediately flickers on all around them, ending a few feet beyond the peach tree.

That would keep most of the ghosts entertained for a while, effectively breaking down the entire wave into smaller ones. The only exception are the few chandelure, on which the fire would have no effect. Those, Erin's gengar would handle with a mixture of

shadow ball

dark pulse

confuse ray

and

disable

"So what brings you here?"

An odd sphere of black energy that seems to house an eyeball of red irises flies by, barely missing her. Erin eyes the floating eyeball and then her gengar, guilty of letting the

get past him, but makes no comment on it. She lets him get rid of the offending pokémon the way she knows he likes: slowly,

taunting

and

disabling

until his enemies have no choice but to surrender.

Mars finds the panel shortly after. It's closed, of course, but he brushes one of his hands over the top of the enclosure and finds a key there. The lock turns, leaving a complex jumble of wires on top of a circuit card in sight. He repeats his trainer's words in his mind: plug in the chip she's given him first, unplug the power, then unplug the battery.

He returns to the front room victorious. Once he's certain that his trainer has seen him return, he vanishes into another shadow. Seconds later, he materializes again right in front of the in-store camera.

Later, when the store owner checked his private footage of the night's events, he'd only see a sludge of purple and a Cheshire smile.
