"silver spoon?" olivia mocked under her breath. "girl, the only silverware i knew growing up was the harsh silver rod they used to discipline us with - something you are clearly lacking." olivia retorted, pulling her phone down... it was then that her blue light refracted into a beautiful rainbow of colors as it bounced off the neon scales of a finneon. in one of the corners of the light house it battled with a surskit, and was at a severe disadvantage as the bug pokemon had the upper hand with its speedy attacks.

olivia tossed a pokeball forward, revealing ceto her mudkip. "spike it." she called, a manicured finger aimed at the speedy surskit. wet sand began to gather around ceto's tail as he mud slapped an ice ball at the surskit. the little bug type was sent flying towards the mysterious girl while olivia approached the injured finneon, humming a gentle tune of the sea. she coo'd, a pokeball in hand, "there, there." before bopping it on its head with said pokeball.

she patted ceto's head and turned over her shoulder to look at the girl, blue eyes narrowed, she asked expectingly, "well? your name, girl. i would rather not have to do the digging myself through the league database. who knows what could be unearthed." olivia knew, and had seen to it most of her family's information had been locked away or deleted.

olivia scooped the pokeball up and added cooly, "by the by, you were the one who interrupted me."

it was rare for olivia to be at a loss for words, and even rarer to encounter another abbiati outside of the hallowed halls of their ancient snowpoint temple. she eyed the girl suspiciously, the blue screen light of her phone revealing the signature trait of the abbiati: silver hair of moonlight. it was all the confirmation olivia needed. she sighed, lowering the pokeball. she knew there had been some abbiati in hoenn after the great flood - when most fled sootopolis for sinnoh, there had been a few that chose slateport as their new home.

oh yes, olivia knew of the slateport branch of her family tree. she had researched them in the league database once she had the proper access and it was too revealing: charlatans, con artists, petty thieves. disgraceful. that had been why olivia never bothered to reach out to them, and had secretly prayed, that they would never reach out to her. they could tarnish her carefully put together public persona, or even worse, their clan's name.

"who are you?" olivia demanded from this girl who called her aunt. the bitterness in the girl's voice was oversaturated, like polluted seawater. she narrowed her azure eyes, adding in a chilly tone, "niece."

olivia had returned to the site of her attack; the site of the explosion that could have wiped slateport off the map once and for all. she was tired, she was hurt; yet, there had to be more. a clue, a hint, a reason. she winced as she passed by a dent in the sand, the moonlight bouncing off what remained of the flygon that had fallen into the sands. the few precious scales left. her fault.

she tiptoed into the light house doorway, splintered wood surrounding the threshold from when the dahlia beast had burst forth, olivia in towe. that had been her fault as well, apparently. she reached for her throat, the soreness still there. she wasn't sure whose betrayal had hurt more: dahlia goode's or Balder Schwartz's.

olivia slinked inside the darkness, the light from her cell phone casting the interior of the lighthouse in a dim blue hue. it was a mess, and there was no telling how long dahlia had been here as that... thing. and that name she had managed to mutter, for that one brief second. blackwell. it echoed in olivia's head as she looked around the room, almost as if the word was echoing all around her.

there was a creak and instinctively she reached for a pokeball, "who is there?" she warned, voice gruff and low from her injuries.

"to the sea." she muttered, her voice whined away by that salty breeze. it was late, well into the night and nearing the wee hours of the morning. the moon hung over head as the two padded over the sea soaked sands. the tide brought forth foam and debris alike, pushing and pulling, in its eternal dance. "the sea is where all life hails, councilman." olivia remarked, walking into the crashing tide until it nearly reached her knees. her pokemon waded in behind her as she added ominously, "it is also where most life meets death."

"today, however, it will be where your swampert finds peace." she turned to him, the moon casting her in its shining silver light; and for a moment, the briefest, it was almost angelic. the moonbeams reflected off the abbiati hair - or looked to be absorbed even, as her messy silver hair blew in the night wind. her face was in a shadow as she looked to him, saying, "release your partner here, submerge him in the briny bath; and let us take pra- take action."

she corrected herself, quickly, but was unsure if he had caught it. or what all he knew of her clan, of her ancient hoenn house; of their worship.

she listened to his story, a brow arched at the mention of Thomas Benoit . that man seemed to be involved in many, many things. more importantly, however, was the revelation that this child of the undertow had been found in an egg. that was a marvel in and of itself. as alexei finished, her ocean eyes turned icy and cold; like a glacier as she snapped, "undoubted terror and horror."

"yet, you have done us all an honor and service, alexei, keeping this young one safe." olivia's voice had lost its sharp cold edge as her eyes drifted to the sea guardian. "phione and manaphy are guardians of the sea." she said quietly, releasing four water type starters in a flash of multicolored light. "so they may play whilst we talk." olivia explained, gesturing to the group of pokemon who all eyed the phione curiously.

"and we must talk, alexei. tell me, are you familiar with the term, 'avatar'?"

"is it now?" olivia replied with an eyeroll. she tossed her first pokeball out, then another, and another until five pokemon stood before. as each was released in their explosion of light, she would reiterate the rules, "this is a battle of strategy, with select pokemon chosen based on predetermined roles in battle. as the challenger, you must confine to these rules and maneuver your pokemon to the best of your ability to ensure your own success." the first two flashes of light revealed a buzzing vespiqueen and a giant mamoswine as olivia called, "the king and queen of this challenge, a male and female pokemon: the king may only travel where the queen moves, but is free to make one action. the queen is free to travel so long as the scout or knight is in front or flanking herself and may also take one action." her sharpedo snarled as it came into the world, olivia continuing, "the scout is free to move anywhere on the battlefield and may make two actions."

it was then that calypso the azumarill popped out from her pokeball, "the knight must always be adjacent to the king or queen, but is free to make two actions." finally, olivia's familiar vaporeon was freed with a soft purr, "the ally is free to move anywhere on the field and make one action, but should any damage come to the king or queen, they must return to the pair and remain with them for one round." her mamoswine grunted as it took up a position in front of the vespiqueen, who was flanked on either side by azumarill and vaporeon; and all the while her sharpedo zipped to the far left. "the stage is set, and you have been informed of the rules. break them, and you lose the challenge." she said flatly.

"defeat me, and you win the rune badge." she said, holding up the badge in question before pocketing it. "as the challenger you may take the first move."

olivia gave a warm smile as her ride pulled up. "oh, i shall, miss stone. we will be in touch, soon, hopefully." and with that, she left.

a few days later and daphne would receive an email detailing the A.Q.U.A. initiative very similar to the one sent to @noblesse. it detailed the major points of the initiative, mainly that it should be a response and research special ops team.

specifics such as:


this team will be made up of existing league related persons: trainers, researchers, rangers, coordinators, and even gym leaders. we may go so far up the chain of command except the elite four and the champion.

this team will act as a response and research team whose purpose is to understand, defeat, and capture these 'ultra beast'.

this team will act as a research and recruitment team whose purpose is to understand, monitor, and train these 'avatars'.

this team will act as a first responding team to any of the above, and be given authority over the situation should others arrive.

this team will sign waivers and contracts with the league as to allow contingency plans to be enacted should death occur.

this team will research both 'avatars' and 'ultra beast' so the league can have the most current technological advancements ready to deal with such threats.

the final line of the email read:

miss stone, as characters reveal themselves and scenes unfold in the great epic that is the story of hoenn, we must ask ourselves what it is we can do to prevent an abrupt and sudden finale. i ask you take this into consideration and that i may look forward to your support - for if the league, as councilman silph has already done, intends to use your company's money; should you not get a say in how it is used?

the spinning logo of the crown, the symbol of the abbiati house, was left in lieu of a signature.

to the point, much like her older brother, it would seem. olivia gave a nod, releasing her sharpedo in a flash of light. "chione should be more than capable, all things considered." she remarked as she shark pokemon gazed at dying whale with hungry eyes. olivia chimed in, quietly, her voice stern, "that we are here to help this creature." her sharpedo gave what could, possibly, maybe, somehow, be considered puppy dog eyes.

"when you're ready." olivia said tapping a sapphire topped ring surrounded with pearls clung to her fingers and caught the fading beams of sunset in such a way that the light seemed to refract, splinter, and shatter...

before the glint of a shiny jewel snug around china's fin exploded with light! chione had mega evolved. "shall we?" she asked, to both stormy and chione.

"slooooooooow-" the pink chubby pokemon began to chant, psychic energies manifesting around its stubby paws. "BRO!" he said at last, causing a large pile of rubble to be sent flying towards the sea curtesy of psychic.

and oh wow was that hard work. the lazy pokemon waddled by the others that had been sent to clean up the human mess. apparently it was some kind of party? a social gathering gone amiss. all things for after mentioned slowbro to ponder as he continued to hurl debris into the sea.

"yes," olivia began quietly, flashback from the minefield outside the lighthouse bombarding her memory. "all of mine own survived the ordeal." she added with a somber note; for many had perished, in fact, there had been a direct casualty because of her actions. the spirit of the sands, mystic of the desert - a flygon - had met its end in the sands of the slateport beach. the trainer was masked, Remiel Calcifet , that much she could remember distinctly, for he was one of those who had not been present after the clown monster vanished.

yet, it was the here and now she was concerned with. those who had survived, and those, like her, who had been traumatized: physically or emotionally. the swampert was, by no accounts, healthy. olivia was no expert, but as her young mudkip sniffed about curiously, she could tell by his expression alone that orion's swampert was in need of healing.

the clinic was getting loud, olivia realized, and full. crown personnel were doing what could be done to relieve the pokecenter nurses - but still. as people began to congest the lines, some even taking notice of the two council members, olivia rose in a manner that could only be described as regal. her stark silver hair had been beach blown and encrusted with sea salt from the battle earlier, and despite the pain she was enduring, olivia knew she had to act the part.

she offered a hand to orion, muttering, "come with me, we might be able to help your swampert yet." olivia began to maneuver through the crowd, presuming orion followed, and out a back door of the pokecenter, with both of her her Pokemon following behind dutifully.

as they traveled into the darkness, olivia’s bubble of air was soon surrounded by spinning aqua rings, the water illuminating the dark waters with healing light. their descent was slowed as olivia took notice of their surroundings, the odd black plates jutting out; almost like her sharpedo's jaw, ready to crush and shred anything in its path.

then, the water began to move; no, rush, towards the darkest depths of the jagged tunnel. instinctually, opis enacted a protective barrier around olivia as they were sucked towards the bottom. she had to act quick, think quick; ocean eyes lost in the darkness of the whirlpool found relief in the glint of a broken hinge. one of the plates wasn't quite in place - and that was all olivia needed to bully her way through.

"fritz freeze!" she barked inside her air bubble, the sound waves traveling quicker through the water than air. meara blasted the broken hinge with a freezing rainbow aurora beam that chilled the water around it before encrusting the hinge in ice. "get us out of here." olivia ordered with a cool calmness; yes she was in danger, but the water was her home. her place of worship. her turf.

from below, her omastar shot out fossilized spike cannons at the frozen hinge, loosening it further if not out right destroying it. olivia gave a nod to meara and calypso, then let go of her azumarill. the air bubble immedeitly began to shrink as calypso launched herself at the plate empowered by her huge power with a glowing aqua tail. the plate, presumably shattered, provided a route for Olivia and her pokemon to escape from.

in a blue blur, meara used quick attack to nab olivia and her shrinking air source towards the hole, the rest of her pokemon following suite and opis closing the hole with a wall of rock slide. olivia returned to calypso, and her life support bubble returned as well. now it was time to explore this... dungeon?

olivia chortled, it was a chill and bitter sound like the briny winter winds they had all endured in slateport. "anderson, it seems i must be the bearer of bad news, or the one to clarify something that i had thought was obvious to everyone in this room: the rangers, elite four, and any league operative serves under the council. gods' sake, the elite four are chosen and hand picked by us and the commissioner." olivia announced, her glacier gaze honing in on the ranger. she liked him, for a man, but he was as ignorant as any other. she added with a scoff, "the only league representatives with an inch of autonomy would be gym leaders, seeing as they handle the municipal issues of their place of residence - who even then, may and can be dismissed by the council or commissioner."

"to be quite frank, anderson, despite your position as head ranger and my own missions with you; i find that i must inform you that what you say here, now, is advice, guidance, suggestions; choose any synonym but at the end of the day it is the vote of the council and commissioner that will matter." olivia said matter of factly before adding, "you were invited to this meeting to share your thoughts, but only that. going forward, i ask that you remember this. you are not on the council, you are merely here to provide a different outlook on the situations and topics being discussed, but hold no sway or power in how things will proceed." she paused, her cold uncaring eyes making contact with the ranger's as she said, "understood? good." before moving on to the next topic.

olivia began with a curt nod to dahlia goode , "let us move onto budget, then, considering the commissioner's consent to the proposal, shall we?" the screen flashed to charts, data list, and media of the destroyed parts of slateport and other places. "given the current situation in hoenn, i am more than well aware on how much we rely on the rangers and how thinly spread they are. i have traveled from slateport to lilycove with anderson by my side to fend off these mutated pokemon who wreak havoc; so despite councilman silph's suggestion that we cut funds to the ranger, as he clearly holds little regard for our brave rangers, i have compiled a list of guaranteed and potential donators." olivia began, ocean eyes flicking to FERNANDO SILPH at her last comment before returning to the holographic display.

"there is, of course, the crown. seeing as we provide support throughout most of western hoenn already with sootopolis as our headquarters, i would be more than willing to contribute." olivia said, the logo of a crown popping into existence. "then, there is lupin co." their own logo flashed into reality alongside the crown, "miss shou has given her consent and approval to this initiative and will provide the funds required; perhaps more, in fact, but i will touch back on that soon." the logos disappeared and a familiar one popped up, dev co. "i am more than confident that the current CEO, DAPHNE STONE , would be willing to contribute. miss stone has been quite friendly and cooperative with the league and would likely offer what help she could." beep boop, the logo of Thomas Benoit 's company manifested. "one of our, gym leader benoit, is already analyzing the toxins from the new year's incident and i believe would be an integral part of the AQUA initiative - as a donator and potential member."

all four logos returned tot he holodisplay, "four powerful companies with international reach; from hoenn to sinnoh and orre to galar, all four entities have the means to aide us in this endeavor." olivia said. the logos dimmed out until it was just lupin and the crown, "of which galar is of particular interest. their league is more a sports show than anything, but there is particular phenomena that has been brought to my attention given miss shou and i's recent development into galar."

footage from a galarian gym battle popped up, giant pokemon and all, "there is a similar issue that they are facing. trained and captured pokemon, can apparently, manifest into larger forms of themselves, but -" the image changed to a somewhat blurry pic of an enraged giant galarian corsola. "this was taken from one of the abbiati eco cameras. galar has a terrible pollution problem and miss shou and i are working on purifying their water... excuse the tangent, but the focus is this: they too are dealing with these mutated pokemon that we have faced. this is a problem we can learn from and hopefully solve with our galarian counterparts... such as how they capture these pokemon; it could be a breakthrough into research into capturing the 'ultra beast'"

her attention turned to kim cole-essam , a thin lipped smile on her face. "the specifics of the initiative may be forged here, but the original concept is such, councilman cole." the holodisplay became a diagram that could be found in paper form within the folds each person had been given, it read:

"as i have said multiple times, this initiative is not meant to replace any existing body of the league, but rather act as a special ops team. people who we can rely on to handle situations that are beyond the mundane." olivia stated. "once the initiative is given the go ahead, we will compile a list of possible recruits who have proven their loyalty to the league, prowess in battle, and intellect in research. we need people from all branches of the league to come together so we may forge a bright future for hoenn without the shadow of fear from these 'ultra beast' and 'avatars' alike.

there was a silent third 'shadow' that had gone unnoticed or unacknowledged by her fellows: rocket.
