Crooning over the tiny apple in his hands, Orion doesn't find Avery's comment uncomfortable in the least.[break][break]

Instead, he grins, looks up from his newborn Pokemon to see Avery quickly averting her eyes. As the king of discomfort and awkward situations himself, the secondhand embarrassment comes on strong. Not wanting her to catch him staring, he re-focuses his attention on the Applin.

"I've always wanted to be a dad," he laughs, hoping to put her at ease.[break][break]

Applin croons, flicking its eye-leaves. Whether or not it can understand them, it seems to pick up on their positive intent.

Kyle emerges from the cabin shortly after entering, and Orion lowers the binoculars to see what he's up to.[break][break]

Serious as the councilman could be in certain situations, there's an excited gleam in his gaze when he notes the grill. "Barbecue? Nice."

If they were going to spend their day being bait for some pirates that may or may not show up, after all, they might as well have fun doing it.

"I'd attack us if I were a pirate," Orion provides helpfully, then reddens as he realises how silly that must've sounded. "I-I mean, not like I know how pirates think, or whatever, but sure, it's convincing enough."

He reclines in the lounge chair, binoculars snug around his neck as he flicks his sunglasses back down. This was nice, honestly. It was kind of like a vacation within a job.

From his position at the boat's helm, Orion glances back over his shoulder at Kyle.[break][break]

"We haven't been out on the water long," he reasons, shrugging. "Could be they're harassing someone else."[break][break]

Always liking to take a more active role in such investigations, Orion had been eager to hunt down the pirates. Hanging out with Kyle was a bonus; he felt far less uncomfortable around him than most people.[break][break]

"Yeah, sure. Can I borrow the binoculars?"[break][break]

Looking out over the open water, he's greeted with an equally calm horizon, but then — "Shit, is that...?"[break][break]

He blinks, and it's gone. A mirage caused by the shimmering heat, nothing more. He sighs, perches on the edge of a lounge chair. At least the umbrellas provided a decent amount of shade.

No sooner has Avery returned to pour the tea than Orion hears a louder crack, his attention snapping to the egg with concern. There's a fracture down the middle as whatever's inside does its best to come out, and his heart flutters with the anticipation.[break][break]

Avery seems equally excited, though she must see things like this all the time. It's sweet.[break][break]

Inside the egg is... an apple? Unfamiliar with every Galarian species, given that they were still relatively new to Hoenn, he tilts his head curiously and leans forward in his seat to get a better look. He could've mistaken it for a real fruit if not for the fact that it rocks back and forth in its delight to have broken free of its shell, the 'leaves' twitching excitedly.[break][break]

Orion croons softly in excitement, holds out his hand for the Applin to hop into. Arceus above, he was going to melt. Was this what being a father felt like?[break][break]

Pulling out his Pokedex, he registers its data and smiles.[break][break]

"It's a girl. Ah, she's so cute..."[break][break]

She doesn't seem shy in the least; having the two humans as her first interactions in this world, she seems to have warmed to them instantly.

Matt takes the joke in stride, and Orion decides he's a good dude.[break][break]

Unlike Matt, however, Orion hadn't the forethought to clip his hair back or find some other solution to keep it out of the way. He finds himself frequently pushing it back from his forehead, jostling his sunglasses as he did so.[break][break]

"There's a daycare nearby; you might've seen it if you came through the Pass?" He doesn't wait for confirmation, presses on: "Apparently they've got their hands full with the heat wave. The baby Pokemon aren't handling it too well."[break][break]

He fills his paper cup for a third time and downs it, a last-ditch effort to cool off before reluctantly tossing it in the waste bin and turning toward the automatic doors. Time to go back into the heat.[break][break]

It's been a while since Orion's done something fun, something to unwind — though parties weren't exactly his scene, it's nice to take a break from his duties both as ranger and councilman.[break][break]

Nearby, someone strikes a watermelon and it breaks apart messily, splattering him with its innards.[break][break]

That looks fun.[break][break]

Wiping watermelon specks from his sunglasses, he polishes off the rest of his poppin' pachirisu float — it tastes of fruit, and he could see himself accidentally drinking one-too-many if he wasn't careful.[break][break]

Stepping up to the watermelons and accepting a stick from the adorable Thwackey, Orion tries his best to maintain balance blinded as he steps forward and swings.[break][break]
