With its proximity to Mt. Chimney and its natural heat, Lavaridge was one of the areas most affected by the seasonal heat wave. Up here, the air feels cloying and thick in Orion's lungs. He'd ditched his normal ranger gear for shorts and a sleeveless shirt, but he still found himself sweating profusely. The poor Pokemon didn't have the option of changing clothes.[break][break]

He's to meet up with his ranging partner in the Pokemon Center, and he's more than happy to escape into the cool interior. They've got a stand set up to provide any passing trainers with water, and Orion gratefully fills one of the little paper cups and downs it in one go.[break][break]

He's filling it again when the door opens and he recognizes one of the other rangers, hailing him with a free hand.[break][break]

"Matthew, right?" They'd never met, but Orion knows of most other rangers. They were a large group that felt pitifully small when it came to dealing with all the region's problems. "You here for Operation Ice Cube?"[break][break]

He flashes a quick, awkward smile with the joke.

She pulls away, they part ways, and Orion does not offer so much as a hint of her supposed weakness in his later report.[break][break]

As he does with all his ranging partners, he forwards his report to Stormy to ensure he hasn't made any mistakes. He is detailed — from the uneventful dive into the depths to the fight with Dragalge below — and so his omission of Stormy's panic is deliberate, intentional.[break][break]

She's one of their best, and it's for a reason.

Orion is in awe as he watches Ruby's Hatterene evolve; he might have seen a mega evolution before, but he's never seen this one. She's terrifying, awesome, and the councilman admires her for a long moment before remembering they have a job to do.[break][break]

Ruby indicates his Alakazam, and Orion shifts his gaze to the spoon-wielding Psychic-type as she maintains her TELEKINETIC hold.[break][break]

"She's a black market rescue." He had no idea what the Alakazam had went through before she was rescued, but she certainly possessed the intelligence Ruby referred to. "I'm still finding out everything she can do, but she's incredible."[break][break]

He knows Circe can hear him, smiles.[break][break]

"I've never really set out to acquire a collection, that's impressive. If I come across any of the ones you're missing, I'll be sure to give you a call."[break][break]

The air shimmers under the force of an ear-splitting BOOMBURST; Camazotz has swooped in of his own accord, the Noivern utilizing its incredible AGILITY to dive in and out of range in a heartbeat.

He's about to tell Francie to give Avery his regards if they talk to one another but stops short as the gym leader suddenly backpedals.[break][break]

"No, no, it's fine!" he insists, hands coming up in a gesture of reassurance as she fumbles justification. "It's whatever you're comfortable with, honest. I mean, I prefer to be called Orion, even."[break][break]

Like Francie, being called councilman — or worse, sir — was still something he wasn't used to.

Orion watches Evan closely, a frown touching his lips. He trusts the other man, more than he'd trust most people, and yet there's something about this particular situation that makes him doubt Evan's claim.[break][break]

Then again, perhaps Cotillard hadn't introduced himself.[break][break]

"Code Name: Beast Killer." He watches the Type: Null, notes subtle differences between Evan's and his own. "That's what they are. Yours isn't the only one."[break][break]

Orion always keeps his Type: Null on his person, lest it somehow find a way to escape from its pokeball at home and cause the councilman problems. He sends it out, now, and the twisted chimera stands close to its trainer — creator — as it stares from behind its mask at the duo before them.[break][break]

Orion's apology is directed at Ruby, whose Helping Hand isn't capitalized upon by the Espeon due to a quick-paced combat. Delphi seems less apologetic than her trainer, with her full focus fixed upon her ursine foe.[break][break]

She hopes to predict its movements with her FUTURE SIGHT; taunt it, avoid its blows, buy her teammates some time. They were so close!

Their opponent is intimidating, the threat of being kicked off the tower enough to incite a nervous energy.[break][break]

Seeing as she was already on the field, and Orion trusted her as much as any of his Pokemon, the Espeon leads his charge. Given no specific instruction except to act, Delphi concentrates on a burst of PSYCHIC energy. The red gem set in her forehead flashes as if to telegraph the attack.[break][break]

Still, each victory bolsters his confidence, and he sends out one of his own long-time partners to land gracefully next to Ruby's Hatterene. Delphi the Espeon came equipped with the MAGIC BOUNCE ability... but she doesn't keep it for long.[break][break]

SKILL SWAP trades her own ability for that of the Hatterene, who could no longer anticipate their super-effective attacks.[break][break]

Delphi flicks her forked tail and sits down, swiping a paw over her ear as if indifferent to the whole affair.
