Orion takes an instinctive step back as they are confronted by a hissing Salazzle... and no trainer in sight. Was that part of the challenge? The councilman's brow furrows as he sweeps the room with his gaze.[break][break]

Then a boy kicks down a wall, and Orion jumps.[break][break]

Laughing, he admits, "Good one."[break][break]

Poison-coated spikes fill the room, and Orion is careful not to step on any himself as he makes his way over to the rotomi and retrieves a Pokemon from the machine. His own Salazzle is sent onto the field; like her opponent, her poison was CORROSIVE.[break][break]

At a command from her trainer, she fires a glob of TOXIC at the other Salazzle.

Brief though their calm after the storm might be, Orion takes advantage of whatever reprieve he can — all of his Pokemon are returned to their capsules, save for a Noivern that Orion calls out in case they need to get somewhere in a hurry. The bat-dragon's natural AGILITY provides a boost to its flight speed, though the councilman signals it to remain grounded for now.[break][break]

He grimaces as the Pokkenger indicates the tower, nods.[break][break]

"If they took Pierce there, chances are Mateo is somewhere similar, right?"[break][break]

He doesn't hesitate to follow the other man when he sets off.[break][break]

Orion palms his Shedinja's Pokeball in preparation as their task is laid out before them, but one of the girls is quicker on the draw.[break][break]

His thoughts shift gear, and the councilman glances around the room with an almost apologetic frown.[break][break]

"Gonna get a bit more cramped, sorry guys."[break][break]

His Dragonite appears at one of the far ends of the room, making every attempt to be as small as a seven foot hulking dragon could be. At Orion's instruction, the Dragonite -- aptly nicknamed 'Leviathan' -- directs her attention skyward and summons a devastating burst of THUNDER that echoes loudly through the room. Orion flinches at the sound; his hearing has been more sensitive since he'd ruptured a drum during the New Years attack.[break][break]

Pinchurchin, at least, is unharmed.

As refreshing as it is to be faced with a new floor, a new challenge, it is also daunting. Ferroseed's spines catch the light, its unmoving figure suggesting a deceptive simplicity. Those thorns are sharp, however, and sure to wound any that come into contact.[break][break]

The Pokemon that Orion sends out is equally immobile. Shellder's tongue lolls out from the darkness, unblinking eyes fixed dead ahead.[break][break]

Much like Katherine, the councilman has barely had the time to get acquainted with this new ally. He can only hope that it understands the importance of its task.[break][break]

"ICICLE SPEAR."[break][break]

The shell slams shut, then creaks open once more. From somewhere within, it summons five identical spears of ice — its SKILL LINK allowing it to attack with maximum efficacy. From a safe distance, out of reach of the Ferroseed's thorns, Shellder fires all five spears into its foe.

"I can understand that. I deal with all sorts of Pokemon, being a ranger, but even I have my favourites." His gaze shifts to the Absol whose deep red eyes track the path of a Xatu overhead. They had a reputation as harbingers of doom and disaster, but he couldn't ask for a better partner. He turns back to Francie. "Have you ever met avery jones? She runs a daycare; she's got quite a few pink Pokemon."[break][break]

It's been a while since his last correspondence with Avery. He makes a mental note to keep in touch.

"Those off-colour ones are really rare outside of the Safari." They were highly sought after regardless, and as a ranger he'd seen his fair share of them during black market busts. "I've only found the one, myself."[break][break]

He didn't have his Houndoom with him today, but the vibrant blue of her fur was certainly eye-catching — though perhaps not quite as eye-catching as a pink Heracross.[break][break]

"Good thing you found it, as opposed to someone else," he remarks. "Who knows what might've happened to it?"[break][break]

The wild Pokemon go ignored, Orion's focus narrowed in on the gym leader.

Was this a milestone or a mockery of their failure? Orion isn't sure. What he is sure of is this: his own strategy had not been the one to fail them, and it would work just as well a second time.[break][break]

The Throh is sent out once more, and it sizes up a familiar opponent.[break][break]

MOLD BREAKER allows it to find chinks in the Kabutops' battle armor. Throh follows the lead of the Pinsir before it, delivering a devastating blow with STORM THROW before bowing and stepping back.

Yep, it was definitely weird.[break][break]

"Sorry! I totally get that, still feels weird whenever someone calls me 'sir'..." It never seemed to bother the likes of Fernando, but Orion always felt as if he were being put on a pedestal he was entirely unworthy of. "Francie, then. You can call me Orion."[break][break]

He flashes a quick, flustered smile, then nods.[break][break]

"Yeah, I tend to patrol on days like these, sort of get ahead of the danger, y'know? Lot of ways for someone to get hurt, but Katas is real good for keeping me safe."[break][break]

A dozing Slaking presents the next problem, and Orion nods his thanks to the eerie anchor before returning it to its pokeball, and returning that pokeball to the rotomi.[break][break]

From his belt, he retrieves Tiamat's pokeball and sends her back out. The Flygon seems surprised yet delighted to have been sent out again so soon after the first time, letting out a trilling hum and affectionately nudging Orion with her tail.[break][break]

"Careful," he laughs. "Can you wake him up for me?"[break][break]

Pointing to the Slaking, Orion directs Tiamat's attention away from him.[break][break]

"Plug your ears, guys..."[break][break]

Tiamat's soft, pleasant trill escalates into an UPROAR of sound, shaking the room with its intensity.
