Orion tilts his head, surprised by but seemingly accepting of the notion that compliments are an essential part of caring for a Pokemon egg. After all, he doesn't know any better. Pokemon enjoyed positive reinforcement, so why wouldn't they be the same inside of their eggs? The logic made perfect sense.[break][break]

Avery giggles, and her positive attitude and their prior familiarity through e-mails leaves the councilman feeling emboldened enough to jest, "You're destined for greatness, Avery."[break][break]

He is led to the garden and left to admire the view as Avery goes to get snacks.[break][break]

Beside him, the egg begins to crack.

A fierce gust of wind escorts a cloud of ash from the reaching peaks of Mt. Chimney to the treacherous Jagged Pass, and Orion's Absol leaps in front of his path.[break][break]

Stumbling to a halt, surprised, Orion glances down a steep drop as the wind scatters the ash and his vision clears. Had he gone just a little further, a single misstep could have lead to a twisted ankle, a nasty fall.[break][break]

It's the reason he patrols areas like these, on days like this. Most civilians didn't have an Absol looking out for them.[break][break]

"Excuse me, miss?" Hailing an approaching citizen, Orion breaks off with cough as he accidentally inhales volcanic ash. When he straightens up, his face is red and his eyes are watering. Smooth, Lykos. Real smooth. "You'll want to be careful on the path, this ash storm is..."[break][break]

He trails off, squinting. "Wait, do I know you?"[break][break]

She looks familiar, but he can't place his finger on it.

Orion's lip twitches fondly as he observes the emerald dragon, reminded of his own. When instructed to survive the earth, he expects some sort of ground-type move; thus, it is his own Flygon the councilman retrieves.[break][break]

Tiamat lets out a playful hum, twirling and twisting in the air as she's released. She seems delighted to spot another of her kind, defaulting not to the aggressive stance of a competitor but an open, friendly posture. When she glances back to her trainer as if to verify that they were not amidst an altercation, Orion merely smiles.[break][break]

The student's Flygon slams into the earth, but the fissure that opens has no effect on Tiamat. She LEVITATES above the wound in the ground without a care.

Blood thickens, runs black, and no amount of healing can restore what's already been lost. Orion has seen death, before, in his work as a ranger. It was unavoidable. This — this, by definition, was a lost cause.[break][break]

Someone else approaches, and Orion glances up to lay eyes upon an unfamiliar figure. A friend, apparently, given that he addressed the other ranger by name and did his best to offer what little comfort he could in such a dire situation.[break][break]

The councilman's question had gone unanswered, for the most part, Adrian too consumed by grieving to formulate a proper response. So it's to River that Orion turns, concern reflected in his dark eyes.[break][break]

"Did you see what happened? What did this?"[break][break]

Orion, too, places a hand upon Adrian's shoulder. There are sirens in the distance, not closing in near-fast-enough.

Though Orion is disheartened by their failure, Ruby's positive attitude coaxes a small smile from the councilman.[break][break]

This time, he does not need to consult the machine. The pokeball retrieved from the ranger's belt reveals a Chandelure, the spectral light fixture hovering in place and swaying side to side. Though he had many GHOST-TYPES, Phantom had been his first.[break][break]

He can only hope that their team will remain cohesive and unified after the earlier slip-up, and not fall apart under renewed pressure.

Battle Armor is an ability Orion is intimately familiar with thanks to his Type: Null. Yet even if they were able to bypass the ability or otherwise nullify it, landing a hard enough hit could prove difficult.[break][break]

He has not had the time to develop a bond with the Throh that is sent onto the field. The Judo Pokemon assumes a combative stance as it sizes up the student's Kabutops, the red Pokemon's fingers flexing as if it were considering where best to grab hold of the fossilized beast. No doubt it had intentions to lift and chuck its armored foe, but Orion has a specific instruction.[break][break]

Scrolling through his phone to find the notes he kept on his new or underused Pokemon, Orion finds the name of the move he seeks.[break][break]

"STORM THROW."[break][break]

With its ability, MOLD BREAKER, the Throh steps forward and carefully assesses its foe before aiming a critical strike at a perceived weak point.

Using the ABILITY CAPSULE from my PC to give THROH the ability: MOLD BREAKER.
(It's a gacha acquired specifically for the Tower challenge, so I didn't bother selecting what its OG ability was.)
