He'd claimed she'd make it. ...Would she really, though? Or was he just muddling through this?

Ripping the jacket over his head, Adrian kneeling beside Howitzer where she lie disemboweled, he uses the jacket to try and offer a pittance; to push everything back into place and try to stop the bleeding. Oh my god, the bleeding... Stop, stop!

In the moments it'd taken him to reach her, there had already been a pool of blood, and now even with his leather buffer he still pulled away with hands drenched in crimson. Howitzer's whines come less frequently, and her head droops ever lower. Fishing a cellphone from his pocket, Adrian hastily dials an emergency number, smearing his touchscreen with the same scarlet hue...

"I NEED AN AMBULANCE," is all Adrian manages through a croaky voice while he turns his attention back to his Arcanine. "D-don't you fucking die... You have to sta—STAY WITH ME!"

Adrian might've wanted to jostle her, embracing her along the wound he applies pressure, her eyes rolling back to match his gaze, though her eyes seem to dim with the passage of time. With a shrill whine she licks her chops, perhaps resigned to her fate and comforted by the fact he is at her side. Her eyelids droop, shuttering out a single tear that stains her fur as she rests her eyes one. last. time.

"No; No, no no—NO!" Adrian puts his shoulders into it, heaving himself against her opened belly as he snatches the phone into his clutch once more:

"HURRY UP!" His voice is hoarse and raw, and he just as quickly tosses the phone away while Reign silently watches, taking flight and circling around them. "Please, please just hurry..." He sobs.

Howitzer is still with him, her chest rumbling with a weakened whine as she succumbs to her grievous injury. "Howitzer, please just—hold on..."

They're coming, s-someone's coming...

But not nearly fast enough; he taps a pokeball, releasing Rover, another childhood companion of his. "ROVER! DO SOMETHING!" He snaps.

Rover is met with shock, and wears a look of pity and remorse, even hesitating to offer assistance. But at Adrian's earnest pleading it relents, applying its meager means like a salve to an open wound.

Far too little, and much too late...

River shouldn't be here, and he shouldn't have heard the terrified, horrified screamings of someone he knew. He shouldn't know anyone out here, no one but his own shadow.[break][break]

And yet he's snapped out of his own morbid thoughts, returning from a mission or job all alone. His hands were buried in his pockets, he'd probably done something dirty, finished a job that he shouldn't have ever been involved in.[break][break]

But at least he wasn't the one responsible for the agony he could hear in Adrian's voice.[break][break]

He shouldn't be running, he shouldn't be following the sound. He knew better than to get involved. He was good at it, excellent at it. But not now.[break][break]

"H-holy shit.."[break][break]

River's holding a backpack, but suddenly his hands are numb and his knees are weak and the backpack is on the ground and he's not sure what to do or what to say. River is shell-shocked.

Orion's phone blares in his pocket, a ranger's emergency alert. It snaps him out of the exhausted stupor he'd been in as he roamed the Slateport outskirts on a routine patrol and he's instantly scrabbling for the device. His heart sinks as he realises it's no routine alert: one of their own is in danger, and — they're nearby.[break][break]

He swipes the screen and tells HQ, "Lykos, I'm en route. How long till emergency personnel arrive?"[break][break]

The voice on the end is muffled; the reception in the outskirts isn't as clean as the city proper. He thinks he hears something about a few minutes, and hangs up in favour of focusing on the map. He has no idea of the situation he'll find when he arrives. The alert had simply stated that emergency services had been contacted for an ambulance near the location, and that could mean anything.[break][break]

When he rounds the corner, he expects to see the ranger themselves is hurt. What he comes upon is much worse: a familiar man covered in blood that is not his own, and his Arcanine partner dying in his arms.[break][break]

He's stunned into inaction for mere moments before his training kicks in and he's immediately at Adrian's side with two of his Pokemon released. They don't need to be told what to do upon seeing the gruesome injuries: Slowking fires heal pulses as drops of Hatterene's life dew fall like rain upon the dying Pokemon's fur. Orion won't say it, but he doesn't think it'll be enough. Too little, too late. Resting a gentle hand on the Arcanine's chest, he can feel the weakness of her heartbeat and the labour of her breath. His throat tightens.[break][break]

When he speaks, it's with all the composure he can muster. "What happened?"

Help arrives but Adrian's seen too much blood on his hands to breath a sigh of relief just yet. Orion occupies the space beside him, but he's fixated on Howitzer, refusing to budge. "I-I looked away for only a second... A second... and she'd—she'd—"

Her shrill whine distracts him. "Be strong f-for me. You c-can't go... W-we're gonna be League Champs together, remember? Remember, Howitzer...? We promised... Howitzer...!"

He's not the sort to cry in front of others, be they strangers, colleagues or acquaintances. But his lips tremble as he attempts the syllables, his voice a croaky whisper as he tries to stem the tide of blood flowing from Howitzer. She whines to let him know she's still there, but every time is shorter. Quieter.

The blood surrounding her begins to thicken, its shade deepening. It might've seemed the bleeding had stopped, but that was more lack of blood than aught else. That she'd held on so long was cruel.

"Please don't leave me. Not now..." He'd bury his face along the fur of her mane, trying to rein her in. She seemed to acknowledge him, a few labored doggy breaths before she licked at air, perhaps hoping to slobber him up one last time.

He wants to run away, to avoid this conflict. He should run, surely. There was no good reason that he had been so close by. This wasn't good territory, there were still the unfortunate sorts that could easily be picked out as criminals. He even looked a bit like one, with his leather jacket and tattoos and general bad-boy, badder vibe sort of look.[break][break]

And yet he's glued to the spot and slack-jawed as he watches Adrian pull the dying Pokemon tighter into his grasp. He's barely registered that another person has arrived, someone much more capable than he is, than either of them are. River had never actually witnessed anything die before. He acted tough, he did stupid shit for Rocket, but he had never actually watched any of the organization commit such atrocity. [break][break]

Orion has taken control of the situation and there's an opening for him to disappear without a trace, to pretend he'd never been here, never seen Adrian in such distress. But maybe it's because he isn't as bad a person as he believes himself to be that he lingers. That he musters whatever pathetic ounce of courage he owns and he approaches.[break][break]

His hand rests on Adrian's shoulder as he kneels next to him, his hand sliding to his back as the boy leans forward to bury his face in the Arcanine's mane. [break][break]

"Adrian.."

Blood thickens, runs black, and no amount of healing can restore what's already been lost. Orion has seen death, before, in his work as a ranger. It was unavoidable. This — this, by definition, was a lost cause.[break][break]

Someone else approaches, and Orion glances up to lay eyes upon an unfamiliar figure. A friend, apparently, given that he addressed the other ranger by name and did his best to offer what little comfort he could in such a dire situation.[break][break]

The councilman's question had gone unanswered, for the most part, Adrian too consumed by grieving to formulate a proper response. So it's to River that Orion turns, concern reflected in his dark eyes.[break][break]

"Did you see what happened? What did this?"[break][break]

Orion, too, places a hand upon Adrian's shoulder. There are sirens in the distance, not closing in near-fast-enough.
