It feels good to laugh, even if it pulls at the stitching of old wounds for them both. With great care befitting such a treasure, he returns the picture to Tulio.[break][break]

"Think it was my left hook that did me in, as well."[break][break]

Temp had looked at him differently, after that, and that feeling had been strangely mutual. It was as if the punch had shattered some barrier between them, marrying the icy void of Cillian's bitterness with the warmth of Temp's empathy and understanding.[break][break]

He owed a lot to his husband long before he'd ever felt the stirrings of desire between them.[break][break]

With his hands empty, he folds them in his lap so as not to fidget.[break][break]

"That's... good advice," he ventures slowly, clearly not a man accustomed to discussing his feelings in such a way. It was a different process with Temp, usually, yet he found he appreciated this all the same. "I think I'll talk to him tonight. Once he's home."[break][break]

More than anything, he doesn't want to feel so alone anymore.[break][break]

Cillian shakes his head, stubborn as ever.[break][break]

"Not to me."[break][break]

It hadn't been her brilliance nor her work that he'd mourned when she'd gone. It was her presence, her rare smiles, and even her cynicism. Her value to him transcended transactional qualities and settled as a fearsome loyalty the likes of Rowan Wrynn had never grown close enough to achieve. It hadn't always been that way; in the beginning, he'd have sold her out just as quickly to save his own skin. But love wasn't a thing easily explained.[break][break]

He would burn the world down to keep her safe.[break][break]

Talk turns to the RKS, and Cillian's nose wrinkles.[break][break]

"I've experienced it."[break][break]

He had learned what it felt like to drown, how the panic was more crippling than any pain, clawing at his throat for want of air.[break][break]

He'd much rather think of the dogs.[break][break]

"They're healthy," he says, honest in that he can't speak for their mental state. "I'm sure they're fed up with our lot."[break][break]

He speaks of Tempest Quinn and his much more unruly pack of pups, whose brighter personalities contrasted heavily with Cillian's own trained killers. It was his midnight Lycanroc to keep the others in line, well familiar with Lulu's Pokémon enough to understand they were allies.[break][break]

"How are you?"[break][break]

He looks at her with intensity, clearly expecting an answer other than the trademark Quinn 'Fine'.

The irony of her abandonment mirroring his own is lost on him; consumed by his own grief, he fails to see the reflection in front of him.[break][break]

Instead, he lingers on her words. On Darkrai, and its reasons.[break][break]

"You're probably right," he agrees, frowning, thinking not of her patron but of his own. How fiercely she'd longed for Hoenn even when twenty years had passed in a memory. How certain he was, looking back, that she'd have left him there if he'd had the choice and stayed.[break][break]

The mere consideration of such a loss alarms him, and so he draws back from the abyss of such thought to focus on Lulu's face. Memorizing its details the way he never quite could in the memory, where he'd raised a daughter who'd never meet her aunt. Twenty years to mourn her and Rowan Wrynn both, but the wounds had torn open anew when he'd found himself back in cold, grim reality.[break][break]

She apologizes, her joke landing with small twitch of his lip.[break][break]

"It's OK." It's not. Not right now. But it will be, and Arceus, the last thing he wants is a falling out. A sudden sharpness steels his gaze as she dismisses her worth beyond her intelligence, her work. "Fuck that. You're brilliant, but that's not all you are."[break][break]

You're my sister and I love you.[break][break]

He says it not with words, but with the ferocity of his emotion.[break][break]

"You've said why you left," he ventures, careful. "What brought you back?"[break][break]

He's not hopeful enough to assume it has anything to do with him.

Tempest Quinn's vain efforts prove that the odds are stacked against them, though he clutches a small prize at the end with a lucky throw. The attendant makes a big deal about it, no doubt paid to do so.[break][break]

Cil ignores him, having eyes only for his husband as a small charm is pressed into his palm. He smiles.[break][break]

"Thanks, love."[break][break]

Leaning close to kiss his husband on the cheek, denying deeper displays of affection in a place full of children, he loops the chain around his neck. It's small, thin, clearly meant for a child, but it fits enough not to choke him, the Luvdisc settling below the groove in his collarbone.[break][break]

His gaze drifts, settling on the MAGIKARP FISHING game.[break][break]

"I'm better at that," he declares, tugging Temp over. It was far more a game about patience than reflex, and Rocket has taught him patience in spades.[break][break]

Sure enough, the bored-looking carnie is forced to hand over a prize as Cillian pulls up a wriggling orange fish. It's not the golden one he'd wanted, for which the prize was a Gyarados plushie twice the size of him, but it was enough to earn something.[break][break]

Grinning, Cillian plucks a Luvdisc plushie from the pool instead. It might be an unpopular choice among many, but it meant something to them.

His fingers twitch for want of touch, and he sits down at his desk. A predator in its lair but with claws sheathed, wishing only for comfort and company.[break][break]

"Did it tell you why it was leaving?"[break][break]

It had been Darkrai's return to Walsh that had convinced Cillian near-completely of her death. He had not thought her patron would abandon her. Not unless...[break][break]

Tears build anew and he swipes at them, cheeks flushed with shame.[break][break]

"Sorry," he chokes out, a strangled sound proving a poor attempt to laugh it off. "I — fuck, I thought you were dead. Nomi and I were looking—"[break][break]

Naomi Sato has been his rock in her absence, helping him to push through grief and hold on to hope as they searched. Yet their efforts had borne no fruit, and he'd worried more and more that they'd been in vain.[break][break]

"I'm glad you're not," he adds, softer. Though it frightens him as always to be vulnerable, he lets down his guard for this. "I've missed you so much. You're not — you won't leave again, will you?"

Cillian is punctual and stoic as ever, passing through the shroud of shadow with his own MIASMA curling in his wake. He offers a curt nod to those guarding the entrance before he finds himself among fellows.[break][break]

A quick glance cast about the space reveals declan walsh's absence, and the underboss takes a seat befitting his rank close to the impending action.[break][break]

He has not missed the tension in Sootopolis, and nor has his patron; her PRESSURE settles over the space and a sense of restlessness pierces his thoughts. She rests in the water with her great wings folded, red eyes watchful and alert.[break][break]

It is an effort for Cillian to keep still, and one he bears in silence. Don't disappoint me.

The word settles cool and familiar, a memory of Circhester and youth. A barely-there quiver of his lip as he draws breath and blinks away the moisture that gathers behind weary eyes, composing himself as best he can. As he always has. For her.[break][break]

"Saoirse," is whispered like a prayer, and then a correction, "Lulu."[break][break]

His hands tremble as his lip stills.[break][break]

"I thought..."[break][break]

You were dead.[break][break]

She'd left her reasons, but she'd left her Pokémon, too.[break][break]

You weren't coming back.[break][break]

But she had. She did.[break][break]

The overwhelming urge to hug her, to feel her physically and ensure himself that this was no dream or memory, no demented trick of the psyche, is fought down only by the fear that he might once more chase her away. For it had crossed his mind, not for the first time, that he was the reason she'd run. He had not forgotten the fear in her eyes when she'd slipped into the office of declan walsh.[break][break]

Yet the reason for his first question is evident enough when he asks, "Does he know?"[break][break]

Are you in danger? Am I?[break][break]

Yet there is no attempt to reach for a weapon, not even a call to the MIASMA that ever-shrouds him. Instead, he draws back further from the door to invite her in. When it swings shut behind her, he clicks his tongue to stop his Klefki from locking it.[break][break]

A quiet promise. I won't hurt you.[break][break]

"He told me that Darkrai offered him its full power."[break][break]

He told me not to disappoint him. His spine tingles with residual dread.

His office stands as it always has: silent, imposing. The only change is in the lettering above the door, now the office of Underboss Cillian Quinn and not the name of a pretender, no longer Gavin Merlino.[break][break]

The man within is a shadow of the one she'd left behind, yet responds all the same to an alarmed text from his assistant.[break][break]

All it says is open your door.[break][break]

So he does, and the shock strikes him silent for several long, agonizing seconds. He opens his mouth, but the only sound that comes out is a strangled gasp. A brief lance of elation turns to ice-cold fear as he remembers the power of declan walsh.[break][break]

"Our word," he chokes out, taking a step back from the door. Wondering, wildly, if this question alone would be enough to declare him traitor. Don't disappoint me, Walsh had warned, words tight as a noose around his neck. He should turn on her, he knows, as swiftly as he'd turned on Rowan Wrynn. But in the aftermath of a memory, his emotions as raw and fragile as an open wound, all he feels is hope.[break][break]

Don't let this be some trick. Let this time be real.[break][break]

He's lost weight, cheekbones sharp as the steel that's absent, for once, from his eyes. He bears no INSOMNIA, yet still looks as if he hasn't slept. In the low light of the office, his eyes glisten with unshed tears.

Though he cared deeply for those whose company he'd shared before, there was no comfort like that of his husband's arms around him. Even broken as they were by loss and change, their relationship held firm.[break][break]

Many relationships didn't survive the death of a child.[break][break]

Theirs would. It had. It would survive anything.[break][break]

When he pulls away from the hug, Cillian still keeps one hand entwined with his lover's. He feels almost like a giddy teenager on a date with their crush, butterflies swirling in his chest as they walk around.[break][break]

"Sure. What about the ring-toss?"[break][break]

The DUGTRIO RING TOSS was simple enough in concept, though much more difficult than it looked on account of the Dugtrio ducking out of the way of the rings. You had to be swift and decision in your tosses, and unfortunately for Cillian his reflexes had become largely reliant on a supernatural force he couldn't very well display in a public carnival.[break][break]

He loses, predictably, dissatisfaction creasing his frown.[break][break]

"Maybe you'll have better luck."

jayden cross and Naomi Sato have already gone home for the night; Cillian had opted to stay behind. The carnival shifts and changes around him, streetlights blooming amidst the colourful lights from the rides. He ignores it all, instead choosing to walk along Slateport's docks and stare out over the ocean. For all it frightened him, it brought a strange sense of comfort in Lugia's name.[break][break]

It's there that Tempest Quinn finds him, and he recognizes his husband's voice even if the name from his lips is strange.[break][break]

Turning, a warm smile breaks through Cillian's melancholy like the sun through a stormcloud, brightening his golden gaze.[break][break]

"Thought you wanted to stay home."[break][break]

He'd invited his husband, of course, but hadn't been surprised nor disappointed when Temp had declined. They were dealing with their grief in whatever ways they could, and it was not always together. Yet the relief is apparent in Cil's expression.[break][break]

Though the lines around his eyes are not so prominent as they'd be twenty years from now, they crinkle all the same.[break][break]

"Of course. I'd love to."[break][break]

Careful to maneuver the accepted apple after taking a bite, he wraps his arms around his husband in a grateful embrace, drawing in his scent.

He was the vessel for a legend's power. It was not the first time he'd encountered Zapdos. Yet even still, as the air around them charges with electricity and he feels it like a tingle through his skin, Cillian is struck silent by awe.[break][break]

Zapdos was a magnificent creature, powerful and predatory.[break][break]

And they had stepped into what it likely considered its lair, which could prove a death sentence for the unworthy.[break][break]

Carefully, the underboss shows his palms and relaxes his posture.[break][break]

"It fed upon Oscar's generators, before."[break][break]

GMH had been a well-known power company in the region, and electrical power had attracted power of a different kind.[break][break]

"We're not here to ask you to leave," he assures the resplendent bird, who may well have suffered previous attempts to extract it from Mauville's prime power source. Mauville was not their concern. "We wanted to make sure you were all right."[break][break]

Though there were ulterior motives beyond, that much was true.

jayden cross looks to him with curiousity and Cillian offers a well-natured scoff.[break][break]

"I'm not nearly as interesting as her," he says of Naomi Sato. Showing off his follow list, it's mostly related to extreme sports. "But I don't use the account too often. Just for stuff like this."[break][break]

His stoicism is broken by a sharp, surprised laugh at Jayden's ignorance. He at least has the decency to look apologetic, though the mirth still dances in his eyes as he slides into the seat across from his friends.[break][break]

"It's a metaphor," he explains. "For losing time."[break][break]

Their chatter ceases as the ride starts, overtaken by laughter and the shrieks of nearby children. Cillian has to brace himself against the ride as he stands, adjusting to the fact that the world was no longer spinning.[break][break]

But the small smile on his lips suggests this had been a great idea.[break][break]

"I love bumper cars," he insists, entirely serious. "I'd kick your ass."[break][break]

That smile broadens to a grin, and he's already leading the way.

He was no different. From braving the frigid depths of Shoal Cave in search of Articuno to entreating the likes of Dialga for attention, he was no stranger to lusting after power. Poetic, then, that it had come from a source he hadn't expected, in the end.[break][break]

The idea of dipping into a steaming tunnel in search of adventure is, all the same, not as repulsive as it should be.[break][break]
