Swift and silent as a specter, the Harbinger stalks forward with murderous intent. It had not been personal in the Wilds, where he had known this man only as a fool who'd refused to back down. Now, he was a fool who'd messed with Rocket twice over.[break][break]

Shadows stir beneath him, but it is not the MIASMA.[break][break]

It is her blessing that saves him all the same, the god-granted reflexes of an Avatar allowing him to register the threat before the Greninja can bring him down. In a flash, he adjusts his grip on the knife and drives it deep.[break][break]

Still he is silent, yanking back his blade with force.

Though it was more a poor attempt at humour than any self-deprecation, Cillian still smiles softly as Tempest Quinn draws close to offer comfort. It's without hesitation that he folds into his lover's touch, nuzzling against his hair as teeth graze his neck.[break][break]

It hurts, to look upon an echo of his past. Yet Temp's warmth drives back the bitter chill. His past held nothing but pain, but his husband ensured that the future would always have something to look forward to.[break][break]

None of this had been planned, and yet Cillian couldn't have planned it more perfectly.[break][break]

But he doesn't say it, only curls his fingers around the rail to keep his balance as the yacht rocks and watches as Lugia's HURRICANE winds tosses the remaining vessel toward the still-swirling vortex in the sea.[break][break]

What he says is, "Lugia. Beautiful, isn't she?"[break][break]

The reverence in his voice is real. He will never tire of her power.[break][break]

Seas calm, waves closing over the sinking vessels. His Dhelmise is nowhere to be seen, and Cillian knows it's likely searching for prey to sate its hunger after the ships proved an inadequate, inedible meal.

Lately, it was hard to get excited about anything. Perhaps that's why the sting of disappointment was so harsh.[break][break]

Cillian scowls as he once again finds himself at the top of a familiar tower. Amor seems equally displeased, and Cillian wonders if he's also been here before. There's no time to ask before they're confronted by the brothers.[break][break]

But Amor sides with the black dragon, and so Cillian turns the force of his wrath against Reshiram. He imagines it's Razz Kingsman who falls at the end, crumpled and defeated. Vengeance burns hot in his blood.[break][break]

Saffron. A dim-lit room with his hands tied behind his back. The acrid tang of smoke overpowered by the taste of iron in the back of his throat. The fear. He's going to die here.[break][break]

The distant knowledge that this is simulated is the only thing that saves him.[break][break]

He shudders when he comes back to himself, gaze haunted.[break][break]

"What the fuck was that?" He looks to Barnaby, demanding, "What did you see?"[break][break]

Was it something so personal they couldn't have known?

What he doesn't say is that it'd been easy enough to hide his Riolu on his person because his parents didn't care enough to give him a second glance. Not unless they wanted something from him, and then it was usually a detached command without a glance spared.[break][break]

So, when Temp breaks the awful news, Cillian only scoffs.[break][break]

"You'd be surprised how long it took me to figure that out." A grimace. "Or maybe you wouldn't."[break][break]

It's bitter. Sad. He'd wasted too many years loving people who didn't love him back. Padraig, twisted and foul as the Quinn patriarch was, had still given him more attention than either of his parents.[break][break]

"I'd say 'I turned out OK', but, well..."[break][break]

He smirks, an attempt at a joke, the humour dry and brittle.

But BARNABY FINCH mentions the food, and Cillian's stomach growls as he suddenly realises he hasn't eaten since his husband had pressed food on him at breakfast. He often neglected his own needs in favour of work. He'd have lost much more weight than that which sharpens his cheekbones were it not for the diligence of Tempest Quinn.[break][break]

"That does smell really good."[break][break]

Pies aren't usually his go-to, but hunger would make anything taste divine.[break][break]

"Fuck it," the underboss declares with a shrug, "we got the job done, we can spare a few."[break][break]

Whether he means minutes or hours is unclear, but Cillian approaches the stall with the pies and purchases one for each of them. He offers it up to Barnaby, glancing around at the various attractions as he waits for his own to cool.[break][break]

"How strong's your stomach?" Cillian's eyes gleam as he eyes the TAURUS RODEO. "Strong enough to keep your food down?"

Cillian had never met Aurora, who had died long before he and Tempest Quinn had met, but it was impossible to mistake the smiling girl in the photograph for anyone else. Alvilda is more familiar to him, and Cil's gaze lingers fondly on the younger Temp even as his heart wrenches with Tulio's shared pain. This was a loss like no other.[break][break]

"Met your wife on the Border," Cillian confesses after a melancholy pause, eyes still on the photo. His laugh is strained but true. "She tried to knock me out. Lovely woman."

Protective of her family even after her life had ended. Would he be the same?[break][break]

"I've wanted to help him." Speaking again of Temp, Cillian's voice is heavy. "But I've hardly known how to handle it myself. Twenty years in the blink of an eye, and they expect us to carry on like normal."[break][break]

He doesn't miss the emotion, feels his stomach lurch in response. After a beat of hesitation, he pulls the other into a brief, tight hug. No words are offered, but this small gesture surely says enough.[break][break]

"Yeah."[break][break]

He knows it might cause tension between him and Tempest Quinn, but resolves to deal with his husband's concerns in whatever way he must. They're left unspoken; Chu-e already feels enough of a burden without knowing Temp's (admittedly well-deserved) distaste.[break][break]

"We'll get you sorted in Sootopolis."[break][break]

There was always vacant property in the city, often for macabre reason.[break][break]

A click of his tongue sees the Dhelmise activate its shadowy portal, and Cillian beckons Chu-e to follow before stepping inside.
