Like with any contraband, banning something only drove curiosity. Cillian could have easily uninstalled the app from the burner phone on which he'd played it, but why should he? It's not as if his data was under threat by Macro Cosmos.[break][break]

The phone wasn't under his name, contained none of his personal data.[break][break]

It would ping off the cell towers in Sootopolis, but that mattered equally little to him. There was a café down the street from which he sometimes brought home coffee, and they had internet access. He sips at his black coffee as he boots up the game.[break][break]

Having played a lot of the spicier routes already, a name he doesn't recognize but that seems to be highly popular on the app catches his attention. What was this all about, then?[break][break]

Instinctually, Cillian wants to go for LEVEL 8, as it seems to logically follow that it would be the most difficult. Descriptions of each route, however, give him enough pause for consideration.[break][break]

Shalin looks disappointed, but respects the decision for you to take your own Pokémon to the grand tomb. Regardless of travel arrangements, once the two explorers arrive, Shalin recalls her noisy Beedrill, landing squarely on her feet as her mount disappears from underneath her. "We're here! C'mon, let's take a look inside!"[break][break]

As the two of you approach the entrance, a sign warning of the lethality of the dangers within the crypt, Shalin takes out her stack of six of the Medallions of Eight. "Only two remain. One is here, deep within the Forbidden Crypt. Getting permission to come here was a nightmare, but I get the feeling this is going to be even more of a nightmare. The other one is somewhere in Mount Chimney, but the heat there makes it hard to make headway on finding it. Then there's a matter of sneaking back into Lake Sootopolis. I'm sure they won't let me back in there again easily..."[break][break]

Switching ride Pokémon to Letheia, her Alolan Ninetales, she cautiously leads the way in. The entry chamber to the Forbidden Crypt contains statues of nine ghost Pokémon, their eyes seeming to stare at the two the whole time they stood in the hallway. Her hair begins to stand on end from how haunted the place seems to be.[break][break]

The torch light illuminating the Forbidden Crypt glows in various purples, reds, and blues: the colors of WILL-O-WISPS. The four torches are on the opposite side of a vertical, translucent conduit for wandering souls that seem to not notice, or if they do notice, are indifferent to your presence. To the east is a door under lock, chain, and key. Beyond the translucent conduit, you can barely see more torchlight at the bottom of a pit, as well as an open passage sloping downward. Looking around, you determine that walking around the conduit would be trivial. "I'm glad I came with you; I would n-n-never have been able to come here by myself," Shalin stutters. Is this a fear of the paranormal?[break][break]

The comment about Sootopolis doesn't go unnoticed. If it wasn't a game, he might've pressed Shalin for more information, but he's not sure how reliable the custom input might be. The least he wants to do is give Macro Cosmos ideas.[break][break]

So, instead, he focuses on painting a picture of the dungeon in his mind.[break][break]

He's not scared of ghosts, and the soul conduit doesn't concern him in the same way this place seems to unsettle his guide. But he is a cautious man, and gathering more information feels pertinent.[break][break]

You walk up to the space occupying the conduit, the highway which many souls, trapped in the material world along with their regrets, restlessly float about. Some of them hiss at you, even try to LICK you and aim other Ghost-type attacks at you. Their attacks stop right in front of your face, as though you are observing through the looking glass of an aquarium. You conclude, after some observation and interaction, that a better term to describe them would be walls of souls rather than soul conduits.[break][break]

Though the ethereal walls are several feet thick, you can see on the other side of them. Bouncing along the inside are four floating Duskull, patrolling an inner hallway with what appears to be a wooden, decrepit-looking chest at its end. While you make your observations, you catch a glimpse of Shalin and her Ninetales steed on the far side of the room, shivering. You catch a glimpse of a distressed face, clear she wants to be anywhere but here.[break][break]

Much as he doesn't fear ghosts, attempting to cross the 'soul conduit' without first exploring other, potentially safer avenues seems foolish.[break][break]

He makes a note of the chest surrounded by its Duskull guardians for later.[break][break]

He also takes note of Shalin's trepidation. A useful thing to know about the real Shalin Nariya, if true. Though he considers asking her if she's all right, attempting to press for more info, he's not sure the game will provide reliable intel just yet.[break][break]

You follow Shalin and her fairy fox around the long perimeter. The following chamber is so dim that you can only see a row of objects you suspect are tombstones, arranger in a grid. Only the DAZZLING GLEAM of her Ninetales illuminates them, and even then, it seems something in the chamber is partially suppressing the light.[break][break]

Not wanting anything more to do with the creepy room, Shalin and her mount press further onward. No more than a split second after entering a chamber filled with debris on the west and north sides, a large coffin in a prominent spot close to the center of the room, a haunted voice echoes from a point you cannot discern. It bears a warning:[break][break]

"Be GoNe BeFoRe THe FiReS Go ouT, oR eLSe..."[break][break]

The room is illuminated by four large, purple box torches that are too large and heavy to move easily. No more than a second later, the first extinguishes. Shalin looks like she is scared stiff.[break][break]

You are unable to acquiesce further details before the lighting in the room gets extremely dim from two of the four flames going out. With all the heavy debris in the way, it seems difficult, if not impossible, to physically reach the coffin's back side before the four flames extinguish.

Shalin, still frightened, is upset at your lack of urgency. "What are you doing?!" she shouts toward you. "Wherever you're running to, you better decide fast!" A gust of wind blows out the third ghostly flame, leaving one more. It seems she does not want to find out what the "or else" part of the phantom's threat entails...[break][break]
