“But when you put it like that, it sounds so simple! ‘I told a guy I’d get a gym, and then I just went and did it!’” She strolled up the steps behind him, having left her worries and stresses behind. Money might have been an issue for her, but there was no shortage of confidence as they approached the arena.

A few minutes of climbing took them to the top of the tower, and her to the challenger’s position. Finally, she felt in her element, and it showed. While Alec explained the rules, she took off her backpack and started stretching. One arm crossed the other as she nodded to him, several times in a row. “Sounds pretty normal to me. As long as you’re ready for the challenge, so am I!”

To nobody’s surprise, she found herself facing a pair of dragons. If anything, the sight of fierce beasts roaring onto battle only made her smile grow. She had the advantage of owning a Kommo-O, and while she’d yet to see a Salamence in battle, there was no better time to change that. Her hands dropped to her pockets, retrieving a pair of capsules. “Goliath, Bastion, let’s make a name for ourselves!”

Goliath was most likely to steal gazes. Between a height that easily dwarfed his trainer, a deep roar to match the dragons before him and a paler green that made it stand out even from other Tyranitar, the titan practically demanded the attention. His roar heralded the arrival of desert sands onto the battlefield, as each stomp of his feet spread the Sand Stream into the battlefield. In seconds, it spread onto the field, a ticking clock for any beast maladapted for the raging sands.

Annie to sending out a Pokemon that couldn’t bear being buffeted would be a terrible show of her talent, but the glossy shell of her golden Forretress’ seemed to shield it from the weather. The living shell stared don his enemies, his low growl trying to compete with his armoured ally.

She’d been so distracted by thoughts of a life she could never live that she had barely looked at the man – boy – she was challenging. His voice snapped her out of her daze and her eyes snapped to a familiar face. Surprise overtook what had just been a dull look. “Alec?” A moment’s pause heralded a fire relit in her eyes. “So you’re behind this! Think you’re going to get the edge up over me by getting a whole gym for yourself? Hah!” In the span of seconds, she was back to her regular self, shouting and wildly gesturing and mildly accusing anybody in her path.

“You’ve played yourself! Once I beat you, I’ll be one step closer to my goal.” In her head, a rivalry had already been established. That, or that was how she regarded everybody around her. “Down to business, I like it! I’ve got four guys with me here, and I’m a big fan of double battles! Great way to show how well me and my Camp work as a team, if you’ll allow it!”

A slight squint of the eyes, and another pause. Her smile faded some, and with it her voice lowered to a begruded grumble. “Oh, and… Congrats on getting your own gym, I guess. It's a very honourable position and I bet it wasn't easy to get.”

It wasn’t often that Annie found herself at a resort. A luxury holiday had never been in the plans for a girl that could barely secure a roof over her head, so it was hard not to feel… jealous. Bitter. At least a little bit, seeing all the tourists and trainers having the time of their lives.

She tried (and partly failed) to push the thoughts aside. The resort wasn’t her destination, the gym was. Determination suited the girl’s face well, but it rarely came without a smile. It was only once she entered the tower that something close to happiness showed itself on her face. Showers of wealth didn’t suit her one bit, but a battle challenge? She was getting used to those.

“Never seen a gym do so much to flaunt their stacks before.” Normally she’d charge in, arms wide open and voice announcing her presence to the world, but the setting had knocked the usual enthusiasm right out of her. The only other hints that she gave as to why were the stuffed hiker’s backpack she carried and the slightly faded tracksuit she wore. Specifically, the same outfit she had worn the last time they had met (minus the shoes, courtesy of Thomas Benoit), a little more worn from frequent use.

“Alright, Celeste. We’re going to make this a training exercise for both of us!” The Rapidash reared her head back, confusion making itself clear in her eyes. “I want you to go faster. You’ll be the feet of this operation, and I’ll be the eyes! When we’re in a battle, you’ll want to trust me to keep an eye out for stuff, right? So let’s put that to the test!” The Pokemon didn’t look too convinced, but Annie put that down to pride. Somehow. She urged her to speed up nonetheless, right past a Woobat she didn’t feel the need to call out.

For once, it wasn’t the Pokemon themselves that drew Annie towards a swarm of them. It had been years since she’d seen a field of poppies in person. Not since Kanto. Realising that brought about a bittersweet feeling – one that she was eager to rid herself of, before it just became bitter. “Snack.” She looked down at the dragon in her arms. “Think you can knock one of these guys down for me?” The Appletun happily obliged, and a little fly was promptly greeted with an Apple Acid to the face. Then a Pokeball for good measure.

Her eyes tilted towards guilt, and not just because she knew where the conversation would lead. “You’re right,” she sighed, albeit a gentle one. “Sorry. It’s me, I’m just… nervous. I’m worried about it.” And herself. “I’m not sure which gender Frankie is. That’s part of why I went with the name. Pretty neutral. That, and... you know.” Both arms stretched out, directing his gaze to the thing she’d created.

“Physically, it seems fine. More than fine. Frankie’s really strong, actually. Mentally…” Already outstretched arms re-emphasised the chimera. “Most of the time, it just stands and stares at whatever’s around. I’ve managed to get it to listen to me, follow orders, not try to murder everything around it… But it doesn’t have much, er… character? Personality? I can’t tell whether its confused or scared to do anything or just doesn’t care. As for spaces… it’s doing about as well as it ever does in here, but I can’t say I’ve ever tried putting it in anything smaller. Besides a Pokeball, obviously.”

There was a silence. A brief silence, but from a motor mouth, it was like an eternity. A smile completely frozen in her pause said what words wouldn’t. “I’m here, aren’t I? And I’ve got everything I need to buy one whole outfit! That’s about as fine as I need to be right now.” A quick shooing gesture told Kit to dispel the illusion; the mannequins were replaced by a cautious Zoroark.

“So, we’ll go and try what you said. Similar outfit, but a little more stylish. Thanks for your help, Mister!” She wasn’t doing the best job of hiding that she suddenly wanted to be done. Experience had taught her how the conversation went once it teetered towards her lifestyle. Strangers asked too many questions, she felt compelled to answer, they gave a show of pity, but not enough to actually help. She’d be left in a sour mood with nothing to show for it, and that wasn’t the tone she wanted to set for her shopping trip.

The man’s smile causes a smirk to burst into an all-out smile. “Really? Thank goodness! I’ve been trying to stop going for that now. Nobody’ll take a little cutie seriously as a fighter, right?” Either oblivious or uncaring of his demeanour, she meets his eyes with a pair brimming with energy, curiosity, excitement. “I was going more for a gentle assertion of dominance! But, you know, in the fun way! The ‘let’s make this a day to remember way’, and not the ‘you’re about to wake up without your stuff in a dark alley’ way. I’ve had a little too much of that last one.”

ID is requested, and ID is given. Hers seemed to be well-kept as far as trainer cards went, but it wasn’t because she took good care of it. “I just got this, so it better check out. Speaking of ID, I didn’t get your name. Mine’s Annie.” She tapped the name on her card. “Annie Mei, up-and-coming trainer extraordinaIre!”

The living tree came swinging down, stopping half a metre short of slamming her faces into the ground. The trio glared at the trainers, while the lowermost head muttered to them. “Oh. Er, Coco’s a girl, and she’ll thank you to remember that! That’s roughly what she’s trying to say. And by that, I mean, that’s what I’ve narrowed it down to after a few months.” Correct or not, Annie’s words were enough to make the tree stand upright again. The jolly faces showed themselves within seconds.

“Anyway, no clue! But I figure if he goes any further than Lavaridge, I might have to leave him. I’ve got to get my guys and me some dinner and a place to camp, and I bet you do too.” She spared Squishy another glance, as if she could gauge his hunger from sight alone. She couldn’t, but it was worth a try. “…Maybe I’ll get him a snack for the road or something, but for all we know, he could be headed for Lilycove.” Technically, a few berries were a snack, and probably the most she could spare after she'd bought seven meals for dinner, and a bit more for breakfast. Still, even if money was tight, what kind of person would she be if she let the bird starve?

The sudden halt brought about an issue Annie hadn’t anticipated. Celeste was a bit on the large side in Pokemon terms, and the safari’s offering was… not, and evidenced by the Budew barely poking out of the grass. Her steed wasn’t just slow for Annie’s sake, but because she feared trampling a little beast she couldn’t see coming if she came anywhere close to her true speed. A pat on the neck was all her mount needed to give the Budew a pass. Annie started to form an idea…

Celeste stopped. Stared at the apple in her way. Annie peered over her mount’s head, letting out a little giggle when she sees the problem. “Yeah, that’s a Pokemon. Applin. It thinks its hiding. Why don’t we let it think its doing a good job?” The mare looked unimpressed, but who was she to disobey orders? To Annie’s relief, she stepped around the little dragon and trotted along.

She watched Rudi give up her dance altogether when Florian tried to lighten her mood, holding her arms in the best harrumph a Ludicolo could give. And yet, Annie was still smiling. A flop of her hand told the professor not to worry, and then she started clapping. Slow but steady claps formed a rhythm, and from there it was only a matter of time. It was Rudi’s turn to find herself sucked into the beat, bobbing her body up and down with each clap. Her arms relaxed, and so did her frown. Soon enough, she was dancing again without a care in the world.

“Like I said, I can’t complain much. Nothing keeps Rudi down for long, and it’s hard to knock her for that.” Annie kept up the dance too, because why not? “Thanks for trying, though. Nothing that you said was wrong. She’s just a bit… special.” Rudi had already moved on to waving to more friends swimming and running by. The brief dance from a passing Golduck earned a cheer from the Carefree Pokemon. “Hopefully your guys are a bit easier to handle.”

Frankie was, by definition, a Pokemon – on that, Kaida was correct. Annie wasn’t in much of rush to comb over the details, and if all went to plan, their mission would mean that she didn’t have to. Battle cries had turned to panicked calls, and soon enough Geist couldn’t find a Pokemon that wasn’t already on its way out. The Null took a little longer to figure that out, mostly because it would strike at anything that showed a moment’s hesitation. It wasn’t quite what Annie had intended, but the brute force helped send the electric-types packing.

The battle ended, not with a bang, but with the fading calls of wild Pokemon, perhaps punctuated by Kjoll’s calls. Half a dozen wild Pokemon lay unconscious on the floor, at least five of them thanks to an eager chimera. Geist returned to her trainer first, and found herself rewarded with pats on the head. “Great job! Didn’t go exactly to plan, but you kept your cool and helped us win it anyway!”

Frankie came to a halt before the girl, its expression unchanged. She’d had the beast long enough that its stare did nothing to her smile. Instead, it too was treated to loving pets, only on its side instead of atop a head she could barely reach. “Nicely done, big guy! I think we still need to work on the whole ‘restraint’ thing, but nothing’s dead, right?” Annie knew better than to expect a reaction from it, so a quiet, muffled “Sival” brought out her grin. “That’s the spirit! We’ve all got room to improve.”

She hadn’t forgotten about Kaida. Once she was done praising her partners, the trio approached the ranger. “Thanks for your help there, Miss Kaida! Something tells me those Pokemon won’t be coming back to this part of the plant any time soon, and we’ve got your little tails to thank for that!” Geist offered a quiet cheer. Frankie stared. “You’ll be alright getting back to the city, right? If you need help getting back to dry land, I bet my Lapras could ferry you over.”

“I’ll do great,” she repeated. If she said it, then it had to be true, right? It was a small blessing that Lars left her no time to question that, for his arrival has surprised her just as much as it had Orion. That, too, was forced aside, in favour of a smile that was a little too wide.

She followed Orion in, immediately taking in her surroundings. Of course, the first thing she noticed was the smell of food. Hot food. Pepperoni?
