The young woman introduces herself as Reagan, and she at least does not seem angry at him. Residual anxiety still crashes over him in waves after the mother's retreat; he's caught between the guilt and the frustration that she hadn't replied to his text messages indicating he'd be running late. He understood why she'd phoned someone else, but why hadn't she told him?[break][break]

Regardless, it's not Reagan's fault.[break][break]

His discomfort melts away at the sight of 'Harley', the adorable little fairy-type lounging in Reagan's bag.[break][break]

"Oh, aren't you precious?" Mr. Mime could be a little creepy at times, but Mime Jr. was just plain cute. The fact that its evolutionary line were fairies made it even better! "This is my Sylveon, Joli."[break][break]

The ribboned creature looks up at Reagan and her Pokemon, then trills something to the Mime Jr. that the trainers wouldn't understand. Florian thinks it must be something pleasant, however, because his Pokemon's posture is relaxed and his blue eyes are wide and friendly.[break][break]

"Thank you for understanding, Reagan. I would love to meet them; I'm guessing you already have?" From the sounds of things, she'd had a few minutes to get acquainted before he'd rushed up all flustered and late. "Please, introduce me."

florian is all about masks

"Yes!" Florian responds with enthusiasm, blue eyes lit up bright as the fireworks that occasional crackle overhead. "I am excited to learn of all Hoenn's traditions. It is so different here than back home... but that is a good thing!"[break][break]

If there was anything Florian loved, it was experiences. There was no feeling quite like the adrenaline rush of trying something new, especially with a dear friend![break][break]

He laughs at the idea of a Sylveon tearing through the festivities; if Dysha was as crazy as Alexei implied, it could certainly lead to excitement!

"Perhaps later, then," he chuckles, "when we can keep a better eye on her!"
[break][break]
There were a lot of people out celebrating the new year, after all, and it could be dangerous to lose site of your Pokemon for even a second! Florian is less worried about Joli, for his own Sylveon is practically glued to his leg. If it got too hectic, Florian wasn't above the idea of carrying the pink-and-white Pokemon in his arms for a while. He wasn't about to return his partner to his pokeball unless he absolutely had to.

"Masks?" he repeats. "Oh, that sounds like fun! Is that one of the traditions?" He gestures for Alexei to lead the way to wherever they were going, trusting that the gym leader could navigate far better than a foreigner. "Masks, they remind me of the masquerade balls we would have in Kalos!" Kalosians were known for their theatrics, after all, and for their desire to show off and stand out. What better way than a ball where everyone hid their face? "I wore a Vivillon mask to the last one; I wonder if I brought it in the move?"

There were several boxes left at home, unpacked, for he did not spend a great deal of time indoors. Heck, half the time he even slept outside... though not as much lately, thanks to the weather.

Adrian seems mildly affronted by Florian's question. His blue eyes go wide, brow scrunching with concern as he realises how he must have come across.[break][break]

"Oh, no, it's not that!" he insists, worry sharpening in his tone. He certainly hadn't meant to make such a rude impression! "It is something the foreman said about finding the other volunteers, is all! You certainly look far more qualified and hard-working than me."[break][break]

He laughs, having no problem poking fun at his own expense. He looked delicate and breakable, much like the fairy-types he'd made a career out of studying. But, also like his beloved fairies, he possessed an unexpected strength.

There's a lull of silence as Adrian turns back to the wall and Florian follows suit, finding a spot that looked malleable enough before hefting the pickaxe and bringing it down upon the stone. It's repetitive, tiring work, but he's not one to throw in the towel the moment things got rough. If anything, he'd just take a break or slow down if he felt the need.[break][break]

"Are you a foreigner?"[break][break]

The question captures his attention, and Florian uses it as an excuse to set down the pickaxe and take a long swig of water from his canteen before answering. The cool water draws a pleasant path down his throat.[break][break]

"Is it the accent?" he asks, chuckling. His tone is light; he's not offended. "An immigrant, yes! I am from Kalos, originally. I moved to Hoenn for the purpose of my studies."

He picks up the mining implement and once again begins work on the wall, his muscles acquiring a not-yet-unpleasant burn associated with manual labor.

"Are you from Hoenn?"

"A Salamence!"[break][break]

Of course, being a professor who specialized in fairy-type Pokemon, Florian was less intimidated by the thought of dragons than most. Nevertheless, he knows them to be very large and territorial creatures whom the average person or Pokemon did not want to mess with, and the thought of the little Wooloo trying to dominate such a creature was hysterical.[break][break]

Florian has to take a moment to recover from the giggle-fit that overtakes him, wiping away a tear of mirth before he's able to compose himself.[break][break]

A part of him also felt bad for the clearly jealous Salamence, wondering if the dragon felt insecure about his place in the household when the little Wooloo was clearly fawned over, but he doesn't think Alexei seems the type to neglect his Pokemon! If anything, Florian understood what it was like to deal with territorial Pokemon. Many fairies were notorious for demanding to be the center of attention, and when your entire team was comprised of them... well, he's lucky that most of his companions were so docile![break][break]

... most, because Laverre certainly was not.[break][break]

"William. Ah, how cute!" Florian reaches out to fluff the soft wool. "Little Bill."[break][break]

Florian gives an eager nod when Alexei seems hesitant to sample the treats, thrusting the bag closer as if to emphasize his willingness to relinquish them. "Of course! They are made to be eaten, after all!"[break][break]

He's nervous as he watches the other man try his cooking; he thinks they taste good, but taste was subjective! What if they weren't as good as he imagined? But Alexei seems to experience a moment of utter bliss before expressing his delight, and Florian lets out a sigh of relief.[break][break]

"Of course I'll teach you!"[break][break]

Alexei's staff gather around them, and Florian takes the lead for a moment as he lets them sample the intended creation before carefully explaining how to make them. He's gentle with any corrections and overall just excited to share what he knows, his confidence growing with each successful instruction.

can't wait for Joli to meet the spaz

"Ah, you have one as well?" Florian sounds delighted at the thought. While he was fond of all Pokemon in the Eevee family, Sylveon was undoubtedly (and unsurprisingly) his favourite. "I would love to meet her! And, ah, I'm sure Joli would as well."[break][break]

His Sylveon looks up at the sound of his name and flicks his ears, disturbing the Cutiefly that had settled in between them. She reprimands him with a sharp buzz, and Joli's retaliating trill is full of mischief.[break][break]

"I do not know if all Sylveon are so affectionate, but those I've met certainly are!" He'd met quite a few during his research, though Joli was the only Sylveon he'd gotten to know over a long period of time. Of his companion, he says, "I never sleep alone thanks to this one."[break][break]

It had been that way since he was an Eevee; the presence of his partner Pokemon had been a blessing during the nights where he'd wake up from nightmares in a cold sweat, shaking and unaware of where he was. Now he enjoyed the presence of his Sylveon no matter how sweet his dreams![break][break]

The aroma of flowers that permeates the air is pleasant, even more so for his Cutiefly — she takes off from her perch atop Joli's head and joins Carina in her excited aerial performance. Shaking his head with a mixture of fondness and exasperation, Florian releases a Comfey from its pokeball and gestures toward the little bug.[break][break]

"Keep an eye on Abeille, please? I don't want her wandering off in her excitement and getting lost again."[break][break]

The Comfey gives a little chirp of confirmation before drifting over a patch of flowers to pluck one and add them to her vine.[break][break]

"Oh," Florian murmurs. "Is it all right if she does that? It doesn't harm the plant!" Even as he speaks, the red flower Jonquille had chosen brightens up and emits a tantalizing scent. "She gets anxious if she doesn't find new flowers every now and again, and there hasn't been much chance since the move!"

they're just all nervous and adorable

Florian notices as Alexei's violet gaze flicks up to the smudge of starlight beneath his eyes, finding himself suddenly self-conscious in spite of his urge to perform and impress. Blush colours his cheeks and he ducks his head with a quiet laugh to hide it, relieved that Alexei seemed equally as nervous. That meant it was normal to be so flustered, right?[break][break]

"I'm glad you didn't have to wait long."[break][break]

Alexei gestures at the menu, and Florian's glad for an excuse to look away for a moment as he glances at it. It seems to offer pretty standard fare for the cafes of the region. Nothing will ever compare to Kalos, but it incites a certain nostalgia nevertheless.[break][break]

"That's sweet of you, I appreciate it." He looks up to smile at his friend. It might have been common courtesy to order together when dining at a cafe, but Florian had been late. Alexei didn't have to wait for him, and yet he had. "What were you thinking? I am thinking I definitely want something warm, the flight was quite a chilly one!"[break][break]

That's to say nothing of the heat under his collar, nervous energy gathering in the pit of his stomach.[break][break]

Florian examines his arm in the mirror, sleeve rolled up to reveal an unsightly red scar along his bicep. It troubles him less and less as the days go by, but it's a physical reminder of the ball: of his skiing trip, of the celebration, of the avalanche—[break][break]

Most importantly, it's a reminder of what didn't happen.[break][break]

He carefully tugs his sleeve back down and dabs floral cologne at the base of his throat, feels his pulse flutter beneath his touch. He winds the star-patterned scarf around his neck with great care, smiling at his reflection in the mirror as he preens himself, a peacock fluffing out its tail feathers. He'd gone through the trouble to purchase a new suit for the occasion; the one he'd worn to the ball had been a favourite, but with how Alexei had reacted to the blood and panic... he didn't think it was a good idea to wear it again so soon.[break][break]

He'd arranged to meet the other man in Slateport's Night Market, where they were currently gearing up to bring in the new year with fireworks and a grand celebration. Hopefully this one would end without disaster or injury![break][break]

He takes great pains to be early, this time, and he offers Alexei a broad smile when he spots the other man.[break][break]

"I owe you a dance," he laughs, offering a dramatic twirl. "I heard there would be dancing, here; I thought it was perfect!"[break][break]

Joli chirps at Alexei, and Florian giggles.[break][break]

"I hope you brought your Sylveon along! I think my darling is excited to meet her!"[break][break]

He certainly looks excited, all though that's thanks in part to the myriad of treats he'd gotten to sample during the wait! Even now, the market is alive with a tantalizing medley of aromas that make Florian's mouth water. He'd avoided the urge to partake in any festivities himself, wanting to experience the bulk of them with Alexei.[break][break]

Florian's always been a very tactile person. There'd been a time in his life where that had changed, but Joli had helped him through the worst of it, and he once again finds comfort in the physical touch. It doesn't cross his mind that such close proximity might be considered too intimate between friends.

Instead, he leans into the hug and takes a moment to breathe before pulling back, blue eyes meeting violet. Alexei is still incredibly pale, and Florian can't help but worry far more about the gym leader than himself as he takes in the other man's evident panic.

"It'll be all right," he promises, and there's more conviction in his voice now that his priorities have shifted to putting someone else at ease. "I - I think we've pretty much gotten through, look!"

He gestures to the numerous gaps that have been made in the snow and ice, and smiles as he gestures toward one of the openings.

"Let's go home, shall we?"

Florian turns at the sound of his name, stammered as it was on the lips of a man who looks as if he might faint. Blue eyes go wide with concern as Alexei approaches him, and he's opening his mouth to ask if the other man's all right when Alex points out his bleeding arm, evidently alarmed.

"Oh, ah—" He laughs, forced and strained. "Don't worry about that, it's just—"

But suddenly Alexei is close and he's unwinding his scarf, and the professor doesn't think the continued insistence that he's fine will do either of them any good, at this point. He silently holds out his arm and allows Alexei to wrap the scarf around it, helping where he could so that the other didn't have to look at the blood for a prolonged amount of time.

"I'm sorry if I frightened you," he murmurs, sincere. Should Alexei not pull away, Florian would bring his arms up to pull the other man into a comforting hug. "It was the debris from the ceiling, I think. It looks worse than it probably is. Are you all right? You are very pale."

The beach smells of salt-and-sea, smells like Hoenn. It's fast becoming familiar to Florian; he may not have lived in the region for very long, but a vast majority of the routes were either water themselves or at very least bordering it.[break][break]

His Rapidash doesn't seem to like the sand, so he walks alongside her instead of riding. It's a strange thing, a beach dusted with snow, but at least his Frosmoth seems to be enjoying the weather. She flits in and out of sight, gossamer wings catching the sun.[break][break]

A Galarian Ponyta canters up to them and gets her teeth around his jacket, catching the professor off guard for a moment before he lets out a soft laugh and his hand comes down to stroke her pastel-coloured mane.[break][break]

"Is this what you would have looked like as a Ponyta, my dear?" The question is directed at Laverre, who of course offers no input. Her transformation had occurred upon evolution, seemingly... he didn't quite know the logistics. Florian glances around for her trainer, spotting a woman with headphones he thinks might fit the bill. Raising his voice so as to be heard over the music, he calls, "Excuse me, miss! Does this little darling belong to you?"[break][break]

Ponyta continues to nibble at his sleeve, but Florian doesn't mind.

All right, so perhaps he doesn't look like the sort that might sign up for a dig.[break][break]

He can't exactly blame the foreman for the look he gets when he shows up to the dig-site. The man sizes him up with a glance and grumbles something under his breath that the professor doesn't quite catch, but he thinks he could guess the gist of it.[break][break]

"I am stronger than I look, monsieur! Enough to lift a pickaxe, at least. I work primarily outdoors!"[break][break]

He's not surprised when they require a demonstration, but eventually he's allowed to enter the excavation site and meet up with the other volunteers. Or... one of them, at least, a handsome young man who's already hard at work on a slab of granite. Florian's cheeks flush when he catches himself staring a bit too long, thankful that the man's got his back turned and hasn't seemed to notice his presence.[break][break]

He waits until Adrian's not mid-swing to clear his throat and gain his attention; it would be rude to startle him and potentially cause an injury. Florian's Sylveon sits at his feet, little pink tail twitching as he looks up at Adrian.[break][break]

"Sorry, monsieur, I just wanted to introduce myself! I did not want to startle you by simply walking up and swinging this." He hefts the pickaxe in his grip and grins a bit, striding closer to the wall. "I'm Florian! You are also a volunteer?"[break][break]

A guess, based on his earlier conversation with the foreman.

He'd answered the babysitting ad more as a favour than anything else, and as a way to make some quick cash to fund his research.[break][break]

Florian approaches the Mauville suite with his Sylveon in tow, opting to take the stairs rather than the elevator. It's all very high-class and reminds him of Kalos, of home. He's running late; his Togekiss wasn't in flying condition after developing a cold thanks to the winter weather, and that same weather had made it difficult to get here on time. He thinks he's only a few minutes late, but that still wasn't good![break][break]

There's someone already at the door when he arrives, and he's opening his mouth to ask if she's the homeowner when the apartment door opens to reveal a very flustered, very irate looking woman with a gaggle of kids trailing behind her.[break][break]

"I thought you weren't coming," she snaps at him, "so I called someone else. You can sort it out between the two of you, I have to go."[break][break]

And so they're left alone, two strangers in an awkward situation with young children staring at them through an open door and quite a predicament to solve. He wasn't even that late! He'd even texted the woman to let her know about the hold-up in his commute, but it seems she either hadn't checked or didn't care.[break][break]

"I, ah, I'm sorry about this," he says softly to the girl. "I would be more than happy to leave the job to you, but — I can still help, if you like. There's, ah..." He drops his voice low so as not to be overheard by the children, "There are more of them than I had thought."[break][break]

He offers a hand. "Florian Laurel."
