Ecstatic to see Cat's response once he checks his phone again, he sends her the only directions she'll need to find their farm:[break][break]

With a satisfied grin he grabs a freshly cleaned pail and a woven basket, then heads outside hoping to get some of his more difficult chores out of the way: Trimming the Gogoat's hooves, picking weeds out of the garden, fetching water and collecting the eggs. But that was just for starters. And it was all in a day's work.[break][break]

Aedan had moved on to one of the more tedious tasks of sweeping the porch and raking the leaves into a pile when he allowed his gaze to be averted skyward, catching a glimpse of a silhouette against the ardent sunlight. Ooh, a Corviknight Taxi! I wanna try one of those someday. He continues to whittle away at his chores while the heat wears on him, and so he takes his shirt off and wraps it over his head for relief, revealing the pink-and-white contrast of his farmer's tan.[break][break]

He's busy pumping water to get a drink for himself—it's thirsty work—when a call goes out, and he looks up to see Cat heading in his direction by the roadside. The slight pout he'd been forming suddenly vanishes as he excitedly rushes over to her, dropping the pail of water with a *clang* followed by a sloshing sound. "Caaat!"[break][break]

He's surprised to see how much she's carrying around after he notices the Perrserker striding along beside her. "You guys found us pretty easy, huh?"[break][break]

He watches on with starry eyes, hoping to be regaled with a tale of their journey.

"Oh wow, a Zor-ru-ru—" Ann quickly realizes Aedan has a speech impediment as he tries to pronounce its name, before giving up. "Zee, huh? They're pretty neat-o!" He'd never seen one in person before. He only remembered them from books in history class. Wilbur seemed despondent at the sight of it being held, perhaps jealous of that capability. It approached Aedan, slobbering on his shoes while it tried to garner his attention. Euuugh, yuck! "This is my buddy Wilbur! He's, uh... a ground-type?"[break][break]

Wilbur became inconsolable hearing its trainer struggle to sing his praise.

It hadn't occurred to him that maybe he couldn't trust Cat, or that she'd be the sort to tattle-tale on someone. A brisk gait brings him back the way they came, although towards the exit of the falls he's cut off by a rolling Shelgon, kind of like a wayward apricorn rolling down a hill. Except it crumbled the rock where it collided with the earth. Woah—[break][break]

"That was awesome—do it again!!" Aedan applauds the Shelgon with a series of claps and shrill giggling as it shakes off the daze it's in, unresponsive to his remarks. It doesn't realize he's approached it until a gentle hand places against its side, giving it a hefty pat. "Man, and my cousin says he's big-boned; Lookit ya!"[break][break]

The Shelgon follows after him after receiving what it believes to be adulation, allowing Aedan to roll it around like a big, lumpy beach ball but only way heavier. He looks back to Cat with a beaming smile before bracing himself to push Shelgon. "C'mon bud, let's see how fast ye can go!"

    Aedan and his cross country team were doing one of their last autumn season jogs around Rustboro. The air felt brisk as it filled his lungs during their second lap around the city perimeter, along the edge of Route 116. As they were traversing familiar terrain, they passed a pile of leaves along the path. Most of them thought nothing of it, but as Aedan grew closer, they began to stir before a wild pokemon jumped out at them.

    Thank goodness they were allowed to bring pokeballs. Aedan reflexively reaches for one of his, releasing Wilbur into the autumn environs with a gleeful huff.

    [attr=class,bulk]Aedan wakes up bright and early, except it wasn't all that bright yet. His clock said something to the tune of 4:37 AM in the pre-dawn hours of the morning. This would've normally been something he struggled with, but Grandpa always followed this routine. It was just part of the farm life, and so Aedan went along with it for the time being. But first, he wanted to slip away for a hot shower to wake himself up. Before he can, however, he's distracted by a notification pinging his phone. While flicking through his feed, he recognizes Cat's contact, mostly left untouched. It was rare he got to see any of his friends outside of sports and school, but he was wont to see her again.[break][break]

    He sends a text to her, asking if she's awake. He bumps into his Grandpa in the hallway, who already has his boots on and is ready to make the first morning rounds when Aedan asks him about having a friend over. He strokes his chin thoughtfully for a moment before relenting to the gleam in Aedan's eyes, though he sternly reminds Aedan he still needs to finish his chores for the day before playing around.[break][break]

    "O'course, Grandpa! Besides, we can get a lot more done a lot faster if she's here to help out a lil!" His Grandpa expresses a sudden interest that he carefully tries to veil as he departs for the far side of the property. Meanwhile Aedan is left to his devices, closing the bathroom door behind him before sending Cat a follow-up text.[break][break]

    AEDAN [5:01 AM] >>U wanna come over to my granpap's farm today?


    Before hopping into the shower he hurls his shirt in the hamper, looking at an obscure blob of himself in the mirror, only to realize how dirty it has gotten since the last time he'd visited. 'Grandpa sure don't see for shit these days.' He'd have to tell Mom...

Though lately they've been laxing up on the rules, his parents had a strict outline for Aedan: School, extracurricular activities, and then straight home. No running off into the wilds.[break][break]

      But Grandpa knew better than to shelter him. He'd grown up seeing just as many strange things, and knew that one way or another, 'sh#t happens'. It didn't matter if you were shut away in your house or not; if it wanted to find you, it did. And Grandpa knew it was better to be prepared for such eventualities than to hide from them...[break][break]

      Or maybe he was just pandering to his favorite grandson.[break][break]

      "Woah... Grandpa wasn't kiddin'..." He could see it from his window on the second story; a depression in the fields, scores of crops gone to waste. Well, not entirely to waste; Grandpa let the wild pokemon pick at the scraps, hoping they'd leave the rest alone for when their harvest came around. Perhaps that insight was why he'd told Aedan not to go wandering around the fields, especially at night.[break][break]

      But it just sounded like an adventure waiting for him.[break][break]

      The old ranch door creaked shut despite his best efforts, as Aedan emerged from the house clad in a track jacket, pants and dingy old boots his Grandpa loaned him.
