dominic is pulling the sunglasses off his face in a single, quick motion, leaning forward a few centimeters to stare at circe as if not quite believing what she had just asked. his disbelief is plain in the arch of his brow and the way his lips, slightly parted, curl back in a confused grimace.

after a long moment, dominic’s frown deepens and he drops his gaze from circe to the sand as he ponders a genuine answer to her question. he thinks of walsh’s stern features and commanding presence, the authority he commands by just entering a room and pinning someone with his piercing gaze. dominic raises his eyes back up to meet circe’s after he had made his assessment

"sure," dominic says after a long moment. he raises his shoulder in a nonchalant shrug. "will it make you come back soon if i say yes?"

dominic watches marcel take one of the files and doesn’t move to stop him, merely raising a single shoulder in a half-hearted shrug. with a sigh, he displaces an almost-overflowing ashtray to the side so that he could push a slightly thicker file toward marcel although he doesn’t immediately remove his hand, his gaze turning sharp and inscrutable.

"articuno has made public appearances twice and the… alolan ones are around too." rubbing his eyes with the heel of his palms, dominic suddenly feels very tired and he knows it’s not the complete absence of sleep.

"what, is this a surprise to you?"

the sylveon flexes its muscles for the gathered crowd because it is PSYCHED UP and dominic's expression twists into something straddling the line between disgust and despair.

dominic follows the pokemon and his team further along the course only because there didn't really seem to be a feasible way of turning back without the prospect of injury; either to his body or to his ego.

the PSYCH UP still hasn't worn off, somehow. dominic's eyes widen when a group of machoke are pitted against them, but it seems remiel's pokemon make quick work of them. his sylveon contributes a few smacks of its own with its ribbons and dominic tries to not think about the way those appendages move because it's honestly kind of weird.

he is so tired of moving.

dominic studies oscar through half-lidded eyes for a long moment, the ghost of a faint smile lingering across his face. ironically, this is the exact same type of mission he had completed time and time over back in kanto, even when he was underboss under blackwell; only there the pokemon were tauros and subsequently far less pleasant to deal with.

he accepts the lollipop and replies as he unwraps it. "god, no. they’re so stupid and skittish there’s no point even trying that. we just..." dominic makes a vague hand gesture in the general direction of the pasture, almost pure white in the way it’s studded with fluffy wooloo. "clump them together and toss as many pokeballs as we can at them. hope you’ve got good aim."

dominic puts the lollipop in his mouth, quirking his brow as he rummaged around a case to pull out two smaller bags, their contents clinking together like marbles. he gives one of them a good shake for emphasis.

"empty pokeballs," dominic explains as he tosses one of the bags for oscar to catch.

in the cities, he could stumble from bar to club until the sun touched the horizon, he could lose his shadow either in the oppressive crush of hundreds of bodies or in the bottom of a glass. it’s not an option here and dominic thinks he’s starting to hate the submarine.

documents and dossiers are spread across the table in front of him, and he’s tracking lines across an eerily detailed blueprint of the weather institute when marcel approaches.

dominic glances up and actually manages to grin when he leans forward. his reply is a low, conspiratorial purr, "can you keep a secret?"

he doesn’t wait for an answer to his entirely rhetorical question as he leans back and spreads his fingers across the set of laid out materials. "we’re tracking civilians that might be avatars."

smoke curls from dominic’s parted lips, disturbed when he exhales in a sharp, amused scoff. it seems like he’s struck a nerve; good. his faint smile is back, distant, not made for gavin to share in.

dominic cranes his neck sideways, matching gavin’s narrowed eyes and takes a deep drag of his cigarette, pinched between thumb and index finger, before speaking again.

"gavin," he says, soft and measured, tone belying the glint of something harsh and ruthless in his stare. "don’t tell me… you were fucking her back when she pulled that stunt at navel rock?"

dominic watches DAPHNE STONE drink for a moment, but his head jerks sideways when he sees flames flickering out of the corner of his eye. his tension is closer akin to instinct but he relaxes when he recognises the source to be dancing pokemon and their trainers. his gaze lingers on the activity for another few seconds as he slides a drink over for himself - a bright blue poppin’ pachirisu float.

"daphne," he echoes slowly as his gaze returns to her. dominic smiles with ease, something practiced that he can bring forward for moments like these. even vaguely inebriated, he thinks to the false documents issued to him by rocket only a few months ago. he could offer the name written inside, but maybe he’s gotten too arrogant.

"name’s dominic," he says, smile still intact. dominic opens his mouth to continue speaking but he sees his klefki floating over to the alolan marowak fire dancers, dangerously close. dominic straightens to watch with a frown. "hey, hold on just one second, i need to grab that."

pushing himself off the bar, dominic ducks over to the group, hissing a fuck under his breath at the thought of leaving daphne alone - he really could not afford that pokemon getting lost or injured at a public event when it had about 25 stolen keys belonging to league official’s personal residences dangling off it.

fortunately, dominic snatches the klefki out of the air before it gets too far away from him. unfortunately, someone mistakes his outstretched hand has him reaching for a lit fire baton and places one in his hand. scowling, dominic gives it a few twirls just to get them all to leave him alone and shoves it back before making his way back to the woman.

"can’t have it getting lost," he says, dangling the klefki up for her to see by its keyring as it chirps a greeting at her.

the sylveon enjoys these obstacle courses more than he does, but that could be because it is PSYCHED UP and the benefits of that do not extend to humans the way that it does to pokemon.

dominic ducks away as the pokemon smashes a rock into small chunks, coating him in a small plume of dust. dominic pauses and chokes out a cough before reluctantly following the pokemon and his team down the track.

it feels like he has been running for a very long time, and dominic's not entirely sure how he's still managing it. maybe the training in the months prior had paid off? after all, there that very brief period of time following the trials of his tower challenge that he thought he could adopt a permanent healthy lifestyle.

the poochyena that is totally his is still very RATTLED, and apparently fleeing down the racecourse. dominic follows and tries (and fails) to not look strained in front of his team.
