"oh, you work around here?" her head tilts slightly out of curiosity. "where?" maybe she's been there... or stolen from there. wouldn't that be a small world?

her smile brightens at the name. jae. simple enough! she, realistically, shouldn't be giving out her name so willingly but it's not like she'll ever see most people again. they make it a little further down the grassy path before she's speaking again, filling up any awkward silence with words.

"i'll buy you a drink after for helping, jae," she offers. "scout's honor!" or, well, thief's honor but... that's not exactly a thing.

she freezes, stilling in darkness. what are the odds of making it out without spending the rest of her life in a cell? slim...? she'll have to take the longshot.

and maybe to fluff her odds just a tad, she tries to mask the flash of a pokemon being released. the newly formed body shifts into the shadows and waits for a signal.

slowly she begins to move.

it's subtle at first. the shift of a heel, the creeping of the legs. and goddamn, her luck is fucking terrible. backing up does nothing more than allow her to step on an empty can. it crumples loudly beneath the weight of her heels and she's stilling once more.

if the woman at the mouth of the alley didn't know she was here... she did now. fuck.

she flushes slightly with a rare case of embarrassment. "oh, sorry! uh, welcome to the neighborhood?"

jeez. maybe she should just stick to being a thief. this volunteer shit ain't for her.

he hands the paper back over and she caves, pulling out her phone to plug the first address into the gps.

"giada," she corrects softly, the sound of miss being used for her leaving her a little awkward. it sounds wrong, disconnected or something. anyway, she starts walking, turning her head to make sure he follows. "and you, helpful guy?"

an eyebrow rises. and then, a look of confusion follows. were they cleaned? huh, maybe she should've asked before escaping from the daycare center. oops.

"yeah," she murmurs. it's a lie, mostly. it'll be fine!

oh! right... where's the destination again? she reaches into the butt pocket on her jeans and pulls out a folded piece of paper before holding it out for him to read.

"here are the addresses." they're close, within walking distance at least. thank god. "do you recognize them?" she's used to city streets, not grassy routes and forests. everything looks the same out here...

turning over a new leaf is supposed to mean not doing the same dumb things. somehow, she manages to not only fuck that up but also make it worse.

sirens echo in the distance. they're too close for her liking. even with her trusty catsuit, she sticks out like a sore thumb. bright red, just like her red flags, against the dark night. the warmth from the night market can't save her.

no one can.

she slips into another alley, eyes scanning for a place to drop her loot bag. it clinks no matter how light she steps. the pretty, pricey things always do. somehow, she almost wishes she had stopped after caden maher handcuffed her to his bedframe. maybe she would've avoided this... disaster if she had just hung up the thief title.

instead, she jolts at approaching footsteps and the sirens close in.

the bag of jewels is shoved into the nearest crack in the wall and she shifts to cover it with dirty clothes. it'll work, maybe... hopefully.

she frowns at the eggs as he lifts them. stupid fucking eggs.

"people keep breeding their pokemon," she murmurs. her arms cross over her chest a moment later and something akin to a pout rises. "i got roped into delivering them but, as you can see, i have noodle arms and can't lift that many eggs."

he has better arms. thank god.

"thank you, by the way," she ushers out with a grin. "you're a big help."

the look she gives him is incredulous.

"dumb?" she echoes. somewhere along the way, her expression dips into annoyance. "i'm a thief. i break into houses, apartments, anywhere i can fit."

a scoff follows.

"you really think someone would hire me to break into your house?" she laughs, which is possibly a terrible decision. "what, do you think you're a king or something?"

he's too close, perhaps, given her restraints and the fact that he's a complete stranger. her memory is hazy, muddled, tinged pink. and without a proper explanation, there's a little sense of fear instilled in her bones. it bleeds into her movements, in the way she stills when his tone turns into a knife.

"wha-- sent me?" confusion rises, settles, and flourishes across her face.

why would she be sent anywhere besides a jail cell? is he right in the head?

"i don't know what you're talking about." huh, somehow she didn't know she could have venom in the presence of a pretty face... that's useful.

and then, there's a seriousness that overtakes.

these fucking eggs... she forgot about them for a minute. her body turns quickly, eyes searching for the eggs in question. the basket is still sitting a few feet away. thank god.

"can you help me carry these?" she gestures toward the basket. "i never thought eggs would be so fucking heavy."

"hey, hey!" she calls to the closest body. thankfully, it's a man and he has bigger arms than her. that'll work wonders. "could you please help a girl out here?"

"touché," she grins, offering a wink half-shielded behind sunglasses. and after juggling the jar of honey over to her other arm, she extends a hand to violet. "giada, it's a pleasure!"

introductions down leaves... slathering honey on tree bark.

her head tilts at the tree once more, as if weighing imaginary options. should she use her fingers? should she have brought some tools? oh, did her partner bring anything? she turns, then, with every intention of asking.

"so, how exactly does one go about slathering this on a tree?" she holds up the jar in question with a laugh. "should i use my hand or is there a better way?"
