mcflurry watches the tears with an almost apathetic expression, except for the crinkles in the corners of her eyes and the way her eyebrows tilt. like pity. like empathy. like disappointment.

she waits for the doctor to dissolve into blurbles as she continues what she was doing previously — which was boiling some water on a kettle, apparently. she listens to the rambles. tries to make sense of it. it's barely anything, but — it's there. she'd be hypocritical to not understand mutterings, or ignore incoherent drivel.

a sharp whistle cut wendy off, and mcflurry silently poured both herself and the doctor a cup, dunking in tea bags and offering it to wendy over the kitchen counter.

"mc... mc."

mcflurry attempts to start, but there's a dead tired look in her eyes, like she just doesn't like looking at wendy as a person. still, she charges on.

"i-i don't know what... what happened. or who you a-are as, a, mcperson. but..."

mcflurry took a seat on a high chair at her counter, facing wendy with an unreadable expression once more.

"i suppose... this is a step in the right direction. o-of sorts. mc. but."

and then the a/c blasted forth — or maybe a window was open and a breeze blew in. or maybe the freezer snuck open. it's not entirely certain, but the room got colder, and mcflurry barely notices, still pinning wendy down with those ice-cold eyes.

"why... why did it happen, doctor olson?"

the wall was — well, nearly decimated. that megahorn did most of the damage necessary. mcflurry hummed in thought, recalling her grass-type before sending her bug-type.

the tiny snom was one of her many ice-types, but given it seemed that the rest of this wall required a little finesse, just like last time. looking at what part of the wall was chunked off by the bug-type move, mcflurry nodded.

"st-struggle bug."

the tiny little worm immediately went to town on the wall as hard as it could — however much that was worth anything.

just like that, a portion of the wall was worked off more, and the snom gave a little squeak of victory as it completed its job.

mcflurry's dormitory room was... cold. it eked out from under the door, and when mcflurry opened the door, it was like opening a freezer.

moreover, though, mcflurry was cold. not as a metaphor for her expression, or her disposition, or her new style of clothing. but she was cold, everything about her was cold — and when she exhaled from the sight of the woman who mercilessly healed her, her breath was damn near opaque, visible in the air.

her eyes burned like a glacier as she looked on the guest silently. stared. judged.

"...come in."

mcflurry shuffles into her freezing home, wearing nothing but a black shirt and her working pants. she'd just gotten off a shift, it seemed, based on the equipment strewn on a nearby counter.

"how may i mchelp you, d-doctor... olson?"

mcflurry licked her lips, trying to get her shit together. crying wasn't going to help anyone, here. (even though she's still tempted to do so. old habits die hard.)

gavin, at the very least, was trying to help her. or redirect her somewhere... nicer. she'd rather spend her time scouting out cities and sitting in buildings with binoculars than killing en masse.

the next subject turns her blood colder than it already is, though.

it's clear that mcflurry approaches this particular topic cautiously. not for anyone else's sake, but her own. like she's traversing her memories like a tightrope walk.

"y-yes. i've encountered, uh..."

should she tell him? ...why not? ...and yet. no. she has to tell him. she can. it's not like —

mcflurry inhaled the cold air as she ventured through the cave, and it looked... strangely cathartic. because it was. the cold was a comfort, these days.

especially here, near the site where she'd seen so much shit go down.

letting the cold air saturate her lungs like she was holding in a blunt hit, mcflurry's eyes went half-lidded as she let out a visible, shuddering breath of air.

the grass-type assault began, and the wall nearly gave way. cracking her neck, she sent out a small budew — her assigned medic, for this mission.

"minty, u-use razor leaf. try to, mc — hit the weak spot, there."

the tiny grass-type chirped, and a flurry of pinpoint specific leaves struck at the remaining wall. hopefully, with accuracy like that, they'd be able to move forward without the walls caving in.

mcflurry slipped out from the corner after alecto did her thing, looking down at the ghost-type as it disappeared into the poke ball. the woman gave a solemn nod, before marching onwards.

"rumors. like, uh, an articuno. or, uh. mcwhatever."

she herself wasn't even sure if they were true or not, honestly. mostly just hearsay, here and there, both from the streets and from rocket hq. nothing actually conclusive.

venturing deeper into the cavern, mcflurry kept her hands in her pockets, letting out a frosty sigh as she watched the walls, the ceilings, the floors, for some idea of where she was.

coming up to what seemed to be a dead end at a frozen waterfall, mcflurry fidgeted, before releasing her abomasnow.

"mcstand... stand back."

as the hail picked up from its snow warning, its wood hammer promptly smashed through the wall of ice, revealing an opening — as well as the angry brine attack of an awoken walrein.

yelping, mcflurry ducked behind her pokemon once again, letting the grass-type tank the water-type move. giving a low growl, the abomasnow readied another wood hammer, before stomping forward and smashing it into the walrein's head.

the walrein was caught dizzy for a moment, its body spinning and wobbling as it attempted to right itself — before another wood hammer smashed it into a wall.

mcflurry threw a poke ball.

"...alright. let's mcgo."

mcflurry recalls her pokemon, and its clear that her tears are cold and nearly frozen against her face.

her face contorts into something between a scowl and a sob, her bottom lip quivering, her eyebrows furling. she barely holds eye contact with gavin for a brief moment, but it's clear this is a broken woman.

"you mcwin this one argument. j-just this one. but i stand by... everything i said."

with that, mcflurry shoved past gavin, stomping her way out of the cave, not looking back.

mcflurry shrugged at the question, her breath escaping her lungs visibly as she meandered further down the path.

"s-saw... a group of mcwild weaviles about thirty minutes in. fought them off once, but — they'll mckill you if you're not careful."

she gestured vaguely to continue, stepping over a hitch in the caves and wandering down a steep path that was clearly hewn out of the stone and ice recently. her steelix returned to its ball for this part.

"otherwise? there were a few legendary scares a-and, uh. worse. so i — i usually just. lead people to a, a, mc... an end checkpoint. after that, even i..."

mcflurry stopped speaking as the ground rumbled. and then rumbled again. again and again, like footsteps.

giving a chilly sigh, mcflurry motioned for alecto to follow closely as she scurried down to solid ground, planting her feet in the snowy ground as she hid behind a cave wall.

looking over the corner, a wild golurk was currently stomping through the icy halls, seemingly searching for... something.

the guide turned to her guest, eyes flickering.

"...big one. should be okay to catch. ...i-if you mcwant."

mcflurry blinked as she visited her garden, watching a vanillish have a fearsome battle with the jumpluff she'd tasked with watching over this place while she was gone.

honestly, jumpluff was holding on fairly well, to her surprise. however, more unsurprisingly, mcflurry should have expected more ice-types to show up. it's getting colder, and... well.

it's just her luck.

deciding to end this quickly, a poke ball shot out, and her steelix rolled forward to intercept the fight. rushing forth and tanking an icicle spear for the jumpluff.

the vanillish made a surprised noise before an iron tail smashed it across the field, followed up by a hail of stone edge.

taking responsibility once more, mcflurry sighed, capturing the vanillish.

the ensuing pause of silence is palable, and mcflurry hates this more than she hates doing a bombing run. mostly because the bombing run's painless, and it's mostly ice, so she doesn't really —

she's trailing off.

"i mc — i used to."

when she was a grunt doing recon work, because she was harmless and unimportant and invisible and mediocre.

"i — i want a... a division change. a job change. m-mc..."

her voice stutters, and something audibly hitches in her breath. like a sob. a hiccup.

"p-please, sir, just — anything. i..."
