After making the necessary arrangements for a TRADITIONAL 2v2 DOUBLES challenge, he prepares for the format after checking into the building. A rotomi over in the corner serves as a kiosk to rummage through one's Personal storage, where he fishes out ROVER's pokeball.[break][break]

HOWITZER has only recently been reintroduced to a pokeball, a CHERISH BALL specifically ordered for the canine upon their return. It hasn't been until now that' he's deigned to use it, though. Rolling the sphere over in his hand, he observes the rest of the building; trainers and pokemon are bulking up, conducting rigorous exercise.[break][break]

It's been too long since he's taken on the League's Gym challenge. He's practically brimming with anticipation, eager to get back in the game. Taking off his jacket, Adrian bundles it and tucks it under an arm while waiting to meet the Gym Leader. Or would he have to fight a gym trainer first...? No two gym challenges were quite the same.

The gym is bustling with quiet activity, and so it's no surprise that Adrian's quiet preparations go largely unnoticed - save for the odd curious look here and there - as he makes the final adjustments to his choice of companions and removes his jacket.

Though he's not grandly appointed to a particularly special area of the gym - which doubles as an actual gym in this case - and doesn't clothe himself in anything more ostentatiously ornamental than a white sleeveless undershirt and cargo shorts, the dark-haired young man in the corner nearest Adrian is -probably- Beau Fontaine, given his enthusiastic encouragement to the Swampert he is currently observing; the amphibious pokémon appears to be in the middle of a set of pull-ups, of all things.

The gym leader turns his head as Adrian approaches, though his serious expression breaks into a wide grin as he takes the other man in. "Whoa, sick threads, brah! One sec." He claps the Swampert on his back, and the pokémon drops from the bar with a muffled thump, landing easily on his feet. "Alright, Nemo, good work. Go grab Torben and I'll meet you on the rocks in a minute, 'kay?"

The Swampert nods an affirmative, ambling over to a circular pool set in the center of the spacious gym enclosure, diving in with a splash. He does not resurface, but the construction of the building seems to have something to do with that; The entire rear wall of the gym appears to be missing, giving a wide view of the beach and sea beyond. After a moment, the Swampert can be seen in the near distance surfacing from under the water, near a craggy outcropping that forms the rough approximation of a large, circular arena. Must be an underground tunnel that feeds into the gym!

Beau dusts his hands off and approaches Adrian with a grin, offering his hand for a firm shake. "Welcome to Dewford Gym! I'm Beau," he quips, "And I'm assuming you're Mister Malcolm, here for your Doubles challenge?" He cants his head to one side, though an easy smile lingers on his features.

It's something of an acquired taste, and poorly suited to Hoenn's tropical clime. He notes the Swampert making its departure, and wonders where the challenge will be taking place. Obviously not here.[break][break]

"I am. It's nice to be here; Been awhile since I've challenged a gym." Beau needn't know his reasons why, but there was plenty of sentimentality behind it. Whether he felt the need to prove himself anymore, well... Perhaps there were those who would balk at him for not having more badges, the way he presented himself.[break][break]

But that was just his natural moxie. Some call it arrogance.[break][break]

The faint smile adorning his features is replaced by a pinched brow and stern eyes. "So, we're to fight out on the rocks? Guess it'd be dangerous to fight inside."[break][break]

Adrian can't help but wonder how disadvantageous the arena may prove, though he is confident they will find their way. Howitzer had never let him down in the past...[break][break]

It would be up to Adrian to make good on his promises and keep from letting her down again. "Please, lead the way."

The Gym Leader grins warmly, nodding in agreement. "I don't know about dangerous, but I'd hate to stare another repair bill in the face!" Without elaborating, he jerks a thumb over his shoulder toward the beach in invitation, then turns, ambling easily toward the open bay at the rear of the building.

"Call it my addiction to the waves, but I really dig battling out in the open, y'know?" Beau chats blithely as he negotiates a meandering set of wooden steps that descend from the building to the beach. "You get some levels, you get some excitement, and man, that salt air!" As if to punctuate his point, he inhales deeply, closing his eyes and offering a contented sigh. Glancing back at Adrian, he winks. "Just gotta watch out for the tide going in and out. Sometimes it's a dry plateau, and sometimes it's a pool with stepping stones. Think we're good right now, though," he gestures, ambling across the shallows to the arena itself.

True to his word, the vaguely circular platform of rock seems to be relatively solid, if a little damp. Little hills and valleys pockmark the main surface of the arena, while the perimeter erupts upward in a craggy series of natural pedestals and ledges. Atop the furthest of these is the Swampert from earlier on, joined now by a Pangoro who regards the approaching pair with hooded eyes, chewing on his stalk dismissively.

Beau lifts a hand to wave at the two pokémon waiting for him, breaking into a quick jog to part from Adrian and adopt his position at the far side of the arena. "Nemo and Torben, at your service! Please, make your selections and feel free to have first move. Guest rules," Beau calls with a lopsided grin. The two bulky pokémon advance from their positions, taking battle-ready stances near the center of the arena.

Probably a lot of paperwork too; best to avoid all that unsavory stuff and just fight outside. Not that he particularly enjoyed the idea of fighting near the ocean.[break][break]

Maybe if he'd brought Furor along instead...[break][break]

But today was Howitzer's debut, in a manner of speaking.[break][break]

"I get ya. Every gym's a little different." Noah Faber accepted indoor challenges, simulating a boxing ring for their challengers to fight within. He'd earned the Survival Badge fighting in the woods, and Melody... Well she'd practically just handed it over to him without much fuss. A little brine was not an entirely unwelcome change of pace.[break][break]

Just as they described, there was enough arena in the low tide to provide a sizable platform, though he knew Hoenn's oceans to be unpredictable even at their best. It was something they would have to watch out for as they were battling, especially considering the Swampert from before. Along with another pokemon, Beau's Pangoro; they would be their adversaries for the evening's match.[break][break]

Nemo and Torben. "Let's get right to it then."[break][break]

Grabbing at the pair of pokeballs at his waist, Adrian pressed the release on the capsules, erupting with light as an Arcanine and Vileplume appeared on the field in their respective positions. Clasping the devices shut and stowing them away on his belt, his unease began to mount as he considered that this truly was his first match with Howitzer since she was brought over from "elsewhere".[break][break]

"These are Howitzer and Rover." Formalities out of the way, their battle could begin in earnest, with Adrian taking the first move: "Alright you two, let's change up the field; Rover, terrain, Howie, weather."[break][break]

The ground beneath them erupted with a verdant expanse that offered better terrain for his pokemon to navigate, while the skies overhead filled with a harsh sunlight.

Beau offers a jaunty two-fingered wave as the Arcanine and Vileplume materialize, noting well the utter confidence the other man carries himself with, but belying nothing with his wide grin. He does enjoy a good brawl now and then, and it seems Adrian's going to put up a tougher fight than most.

The sudden influx of lush grass beneath his feet does little to dampen his spirits, but Nemo the Swampert utters a discomfited grumble. As the sunlight intensifies, Beau merely lifts a hand to shade his eyes almost comically, a low rumble of laughter escaping him. "Whoa, brahs, he rolled out the green carpet for you - might as well give those two the ol' Dewford welcome!"

Nemo, for his part, drops into a crouch and immediately orients on Howitzer, jaws opening wide to loose an oscillating WATER PULSE that breaks the stillness with a shrill, high-pitched ringing. The aquatic blast is lesser than it could have been, the oppressive sunlight weakening the power of Nemo's attack, but the potential damage isn't really what Beau's banking on, in this instance.

Torben, by contrast, lunges forward with a speed belying his size, paws curled into massive fists that unleash a BULLET PUNCH barrage on Rover, battering into the Grass-type pokémon.
[break][break]
While Beau can appreciate the value of a good set-up - and despite its effects already putting Nemo on the back foot - he's never been one for circuitous combat, preferring to immediately get into the thick of it. He grins, the familiar thrill of the fight rushing through him as he awaits his opponent's next move.

[attr="class","adrianwtw"]In a flash Vileplume is overtaken, its saving grace the fact that Pangoro swipes downwardly to reach it, landing telling blows against its fleshy flower cap—releasing a cloud of spores. The assault is not without its consequence, rattling the creature, but it is poised to withstand the brunt of the attack unabated. For the moment they are at an impasse, or so it would appear, hingent upon whether Pangoro exhibited any adverse symptoms to the Vileplume's volatile pollen.[break][break]

Rover doesn't back down from the confrontation, leaning into the clash, using its flower petals like a shield and targe as Adrian has trained it to over the years.[break][break]

Howitzer tries to outpace Nemo's projectile, but the Swampert's aim was true. The attack succeeds in mitigating her aggression. For a moment it's unclear whether her seemingly unsure footing is due to the watery plant growth covering the rocky outcrops, or due to an altered state of mind. Without missing a beat, Adrian is quick to bark out more orders, but not before the terrain served its purpose. His pokemon would be invigorated by the grassy terrain, which swelled with latent regenerative powers. "Howitzer, burn 'em—Rover, back her up!"[break][break]

Dazzling starlight twinkles around Howitzer as she is reinvigorated by her ally, bringing her back up to speed. For her own part, Howitzer begins sweltering with an unnatural heat. The air around them dries their throats and stings their eyes as the intensity rises, until she is billowing with a hungry torrent of flames licking at the air hungrily. Even the seaspray sizzles and vaporizes where these forces collide.[break][break]

Unsurprisingly the attack has its repercussions. Already the terrain begins to dry out and die, burning like kindling in the adverse conditions, causing the effects too to fade with the ashes. And then it blazes forward brilliantly, cascading over the water and towards the enemy that lie ahead...

Beau grins fiercely as Torben pummels away at Rover, the ursine's meaty fists battering at the fleshy petals crowning the Vileplume's head. The trainer's expression falters, however, as a fine cloud of spores is dislodged by the attack, and Torben's assault is interrupted by the Pangoro uttering a deep, hacking cough, violet-tinged spittle foaming from his mouth.

"Poison? Damn," Beau mutters. "Torben," he calls, "Get him out of your face!" The Pangoro gives a ragged grunt of assent, massive paws gripping either side of the Vileplume's petals before hauling upward and heaving the other pokémon bodily into the air with a VITAL THROW.
[break][break]
Nemo, for his part, braces himself as the roaring blaze engulfs Howitzer, the air rippling as the fiery energy condenses into a single sweltering attack that engulfs the Swampert utterly, sending him tumbling top-over-tail backward against the rocky earth as the blaze blisters and scorches his skin.
[break][break]
Eyebrows lifted in concern, Beau regards the Swampert with some trepidation as the flames clear, the bits of straggly grass smoldering faintly around the arena as his pokémon slowly clambers to his feet. Breathing heavily, Nemo has clearly seen better days, but the glare he shoots at the Arcanine is anything but defeatist. "Alright!" Beau whoops, "If the water's not gonna do us any good, an Earthquake oughtta shake 'em up!"

Uttering a fierce cry, the Swampert drops to all fours in response, the earth quivering beneath his feet before tremors ripple through the ground underfoot, crackling and breaking into increasingly larger and more volatile fragments the further the attack reaches from Nemo himself. On the other side of the battlefield, Torben, hacking another viscid globule into the surf, is abruptly thrown from his feet, caught in the EARTHQUAKE's aftershocks, slamming into the ground painfully as jagged chunks of stone crack and shift around him.

[attr="class","adrianwtw"]Even if Adrian had tried to warn it, nothing was stopping Rover from being sent airborne, its diminutive frame making it easy game. And with such a disproportionate body type, it floundered in the air, struggling to keep its head up as the wind dragged it sideways.[break][break]

"Rover, use your Petal Dance!" Vileplume would be rattled out of its stupor from the attack by its trainer's voice, forced to fight through its panicked state to obey. Twirling its body around in dance, petals begin to flow with gusting movements of its own, allowing Vileplume to plummet with a little more grace than it might have otherwise. It isn't perfect, but it's a start.[break][break]

"Now punish them!" Magicked petals like cherry blossoms glide deftly through the air towards Pangoro in a sudden frenzy, a roiling of leafage as flora savaged fauna, giving Rover room enough to breathe and make a solid landing.[break][break]

Across the field, Nemo seeks its revenge, causing the earth to shudder and throw Arcanine over the side of the water. She fails to find the water's surface at first, perhaps caught up in the confusion. "Howitzer!? You okay?"[break][break]

Beau must concede that things are not looking the best for his dynamic duo. Nemo, still charred from Howitzer's initial assault, takes a moment to gather himself from his exertion, assessing the soaked Arcanine that clambers back over the rocky edge of the arena with a scowl. He braces himself for an attack - that never comes.

Beau lets out a rallying cry toward the Swampert, pumping his fist in the air. "You made an opening, brah! Follow it up with a rock slide while she's getting her feet!" Nemo responds with a bellowing roar, his gaze not wavering from the Arcanine as he lunges forward once more, the juddering vibrations of his attack sending massive chunks of stone surging upward into the air from around the arena toward Howitzer and Rover both.

Torben, on the other hand, struggles to clamber to his feet, battered by Nemo's Earthquake only moments ago. Swaying unsteadily, the Pangoro only has a moment to recover his bearings before the dancing petals of Rover's attack slice into him, sending him stumbling backward as numerous wounds rip open along his body. "Torben!" Beau calls, alarmed. The Pangoro snarls, pushing forward through the attack even as more cuts make themselves evident through his fur, now sticky and dark as trails of purple-laced foam bubble from the corners of his muzzle. With no provocation from his trainer, the ursine pokemon leaps toward Rover once more, fist raised to deliver a wildly-thrown HAMMER ARM.

[attr="class","adrianwtw"]Howitzer isn't able to respond to the incoming ROCK SLIDE, and his cries wouldn't reach her anyways; he tries to take solace in the fact she's built of tougher stuff than that, and has lost her vulnerabilities to it for now. A bead of sweat slicks down the side of his brow as he waits for her to rise. In that moment he loses sight of Vileplume's plight.[break][break]

"Wait, Rover!" It's too late. Rover is uprooted from its low stance and hurled violently, crashing against the quaking ground where it lies still for a moment, a visible tremble in its movements. When it does rise, it seems reluctant to pursue close-quarters combat any further, not wishing to be separated from the ground.[break][break]

"Alright then; Rover, MOONBLAST. Howie, get in close with EXTREME SPEED!" Rover begins siphoning pale starlight into a flush sphere at the center of its blooming petals, which swells suddenly in size before being ejected towards the Pangoro. Howitzer's debacle is much less immediate: She stares out across the waters, considering...[break][break]

And then suddenly she demonstrates her agile nature, running as if on wings across the water's surface, causing nary a ripple as she glided across towards where the Swampert stood its ground after its last assault. Although her body is wracked with the pains of the rocky collision, she remains able bodied and determined.[break][break]

Adrian keeps his eyes keen on them, confident in them.

Beau surveys his pokémon, a slight furrow of his brow the only outward sign of concern for Torben and Nemo. Inside, however, his thoughts are a chaotic maelstrom - you didn't train them well enough, you didn't support them when they needed it, you're their friend and you're letting them get destroyed. And you call yourself a Gym Leader?

Torben is the first to go down. Beau shouts, but the Pangoro can't react in time, the MOONBLAST impacting squarely against his chest before bursting in a brilliant display of silvery light that sends the larger pokémon crashing, motionless, to the ground.

He does not get up.
[break][break]
Nemo the Swampert turns his head to witness his partner's untimely defeat, though his periphery keeps watch on Howitzer. He opens his mouth, ripples of water coalescing for another attack, but before he can launch it off, the Arcanine is there, ghosting impossibly across the arena to slam bodily into the amphibian and sending him flying backward to impact against one of the rocky outcroppings surrounding the arena. He slumps, his head lolling sideways as he loses consciousness.

It takes a moment for Beau's comprehension to catch up to what he's witnessing, features blank for one heartbeat, perhaps two, before he snaps into action, raising a hand and loosing a sharp whistle. "That's game!" he hollers over the rippling crash of the surf, digging at his belt to withdraw a pokéball in each hand, recalling his downed duo in twin beams of scarlet light.

With a rueful grin, he regards the pokéballs for a moment, murmuring a soft "Sorry, guys," that not even Howie's sharp hearing is likely to pick up before he clips the balls back to his belt. Looking up at his adversaries, soaked through and hair plastered against his scalp, he can only offer a broad, fierce grin that pulls the corners of his mouth taut.

"THAT," he pronounces, "Was a HELL of a match, my dude!"
