Razz Kingsman.

Despite Tam’s own general inability to remember most people’s names, he’s vaguely familiar with that of Silph Co.’s ranger. Everyone always talks about Razz Kingsman. Sometimes in a good light and sometimes not. When the former, it’s usually praising his actions. When the latter, it’s other rangers complaining about how Silph Co. gives Kingsman a higher budget and better gear despite the fact that the company’s CEO is one of the League’s councilmen.

What is Tam’s own opinion of this colleague of his?

Well, truth be told, it’s neutral, because Tam has never met him. He has never cared much for rumours or gossip, and he also doesn’t care enough to do some thorough research on someone who to him is of no particular significance.

He does know, however, that it had been decided that Kingsman will be granted the rank of Elite Ranger, and of course, that means a meeting to make all official. A meeting with him, since Slateport is his jurisdiction and that’s where Silph Co. 's headquarters happen to be. If the rank had been granted to the younger ranger, then surely he must deserve it.

In this unremarkable office of his, Tam waits, and on his desk rests a smooth black velvet box in which a sapphire badge and armband await their new owner.

The Slateport Ranger station isn't a place he visits often. [break][break]

With Razz working as a Ranger primarily for Silph Co. the young man more often than not just meets his fellow Rangers out on the field rather than any office. He knows it has gotten others to shun him a bit saying things along the line of his being a 'sell out.' Not that he really understood it, but he did a job and that was all that mattered. Besides that others were fine with his working along side them seeing with how much he's done. [break][break]

Though admittedly he isn't entirely sure what this meeting was meant to be about. As he enters he just stands at attention with Salem handing off his back as the cat seems curious about what this is about too. "Morning Captain Fawley," forever formal, "How can I be of assistance?"

In a corner of the office, right by the open window, is a small dog bed, and in it, it’s peacefully that a Yamper slumbers. Until someone steps through the open door, that is. The sound causes her large ears to perk up, and Clover soon finds herself looking at both the unfamiliar ranger and his Meowstic with curiosity. She doesn’t approach, though. Not yet. She simply yawns as if trying to shake her sluggishness away.

”Razz, right? Have a seat.” If only for a second there, Tam almost gives into the impulse to call him ’Kingsman’, but then he remembers Laurence Anderson, and after all this time, the Head Ranger’s words are as if embedded into his system. Perhaps Razz benefits from this conditioning.

”You have a pretty impressive track record, and I don’t think anyone could deny how much you’ve done for both the Rangers and Hoenn as a hole.” Speeches like these always feel strange to Tam, but he’s as calm as he usually is; the words being delivered in a neutral tone while his hands are laced over the desk. ”I called you here to thank you on behalf of the Ranger Department.”

"Or Kingsman is fine, I know we are technically in a professional setting," Razz comments on the name thing, biting his togue lightly as Reshriam still doesn't appreciate his lying about his name still. But he does what the captain says, he tenses a bit at the praise not sure of where this was all going. [break][break]

Honestly even thinking back to old days can't help but come to mind and there is only one word missing here, "Buuuut.....?" he questions because that's what his life has always been followed by right? Was that what this was? Praise him just to put him down?

”Yeah, but Lars insists on using first names and I don’t want him going on about it again.” Tam shrugs, as if to say ”That’s just the way of things.” If it were up to him, they’d use surnames, but it’s something too minimal for him to consider it worth dealing with Laurence Anderson’s insistence upon the opposite. Better to go along with it.

What he does not go along with is Razz’s next question, because it utterly bewilders him. Buuuut.....? But, what? What could he possibly think Tam had called him here to reproach him about.

”But nothing.” He makes it clear right away, and putting a hand on the smooth velvet box, he gently slides it towards Razz over the desk.

”We want to grant you the rank of Elite Ranger as recognition for all the work you’ve done for the ranger department. That’s why I called you here.”

"Ah that makes sense, he still insist I just call him 'Lars,'" Even saying it as an example felt wrong, 'Laurance' he has gotten used to while they were not in a work setting together, but shortening it was still a problem for him. Though he suppose that should be concidered progress in Laurence Anderson's direction. [break][break]

Though there is some surprise in the following "Oh.." when it wasn't followed by something he needed to work on. It was what he was used to when he was younger when one of his parents would finally compliment him just to knock him down a peg. Or even a couple of times with the Sootopolis Captain when he was still learning things while he had some constructive criticism. [break][break]

So for nothing bad to come after still felt new. [break][break]

His good eye looks down at the box before reaching out to open in, in shock to see the new badge and armband that came with the Rank. "But... I'd be a terrible leader," he can't help but counter the promotion as he knows thats part of an Elite's job at times.

Leadership. That is Razz Kingsman’s concern. If Tam were any better at relating to people, at understanding them, then he would compare it to his own situation – to his experiences in Unova and to back to when he too was promoted to Elite and then made Captain of Slateport.

Tam has never considered himself to be a leader.

And yet, he leads. And yet, he’s responsible for so many other rangers.

”Hm… Some say responsibilities like those are always best in the hands of those who don’t want them.” He muses, watching the freshly-minted Elite. As Tam sees it, despite having only known Razz for a few minutes, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t deserve the rank. His actions have spoken loudly for him.

”I think you’d rise to the challenge if you need to, but even if you don’t, that’s fine, Razz. I’m not asking you to be perfect, I’m just asking you to keep doing what you can for both Hoenn and the Rangers.”

Tam Fawley does not believe in perfection, but he does believe in doing one’s job, and Razz has always done just that. In Tam’s opinion, what Hoenn needs is rangers who are truly dedicated to protecting the region.

The younger man's eye just narrows in some confusion, "What do you mean? Why is that?" he decides to question so he can see if he can't understand the ideas of higher ups better. Either way he does give a nod about continuing to do his job, "I... thank you, I know I'm technically with Silph Co, but thank you for the chance at this anyway." For a moment he's quiet, as if trying to think something over for a bit, an inner debate almost. [break][break]

Takes him a small bit but he does look up toward Tam again, "Well then I can offer you a trick a pokemon of mine can do to be of use to both Hoenn and Rangers as long as you ask," with this he takes out a pokeball and out from it comes his Litwick. The candle pokemon gives the Captain a little smile and wave before scooching closer to his trainer. The flame on it's head a pinkish purple rather than the usual blue purple. [break][break]

"Got this guy as a gift," the litwick gives him a look because already he's telling lies, but they were for the greater good. So Reshiram could make his mouth burn all he wanted. "His flame is said to detect lies, ready Alabaster?" he questions before he lifts his hand, and just like they have practiced over a million times Razz snaps his hand to active his Terrain of Truth though with the three balls of flame coming from the Litwick's head to circle the both of them to anyone else it would very much be like the Litwick set it off. [break][break]

"So as long as you're in this circle, you can't lie," Razz looks from Alabaster to Tam, "Nor can any you are questioning for answers."

”I’d say it’s about ambition or greed, yeah? Some call ambition a good thing, but as I see it, if you’re too focused on your own ambitions, you can’t focus on being a good leader for others. People who don’t want a rank or a responsibility will usually take it without any greed as motivation, and if they’re qualified for it, they tend to do better in the long run.”

Some would probably be reluctant to share opinions like those, but Tam is an honest person, and he has a steady tendency to say what’s on his mind. Perhaps that’s why he doesn’t feel much of a change when the TERRAIN OF TRUTH fills the room. He quietly watches both Razz and his Litwick, considering the Elite Ranger’s words.

”Really? That’s interesting. So… Is it like some kind of Shadow Pokémon or something? I know those usually have unique abilities.”

More than anything, he’s curious, although the usefulness behind a flawless lie detector does not escape him.

Razz Kingsman has proved to be much more interesting than what Tam thought he would be, but most of all, he seems like a good kid.

There is a hum he gives in response as he thinks over Tam's words. They all fell in logically enough so of course he couldn't help but just simply agree, giving a nod as he didn't have much to respond about it. Just take it into consideration for the future. [break][break]

Though when asked about it being a shadow pokemon the younger man shakes his head. "No, I have shadow pokemon as well and they're much more... violent," was the best way to describe it, he recalls just how long it took to finally find a way to get his shadow pokemon more on his side rather than being wild. "This Litwick was a gift from a priest from Unova, claims that he was blessed with the 'flames of Reshiram themself' and so can detect your lies," he tells Tam the story he has somewhat fabricated for Alabaster's ability. While the priest part was true, them claiming such a thing was a lie. Not that Tam would ever know as his own Terrain doesn't work on him.[break][break]

Razz can lie all he wants in them, aside from the burning mouth part. [break][break]

”A priest?” Unovan as Tam so obviously is (thanks, delightful accent), most people would expect him to have heard a thing or two about his region's own legends, but they certainly wouldn’t expect the reality of it. Tam is no stranger to tales of Reshiram, but he has never cared much to look deeply into any of it.

”I grew up by Dragonspiral Tower, met a few people like that. In hindsight, maybe I should’ve paid them more attention if that’s the kind of thing they can do.”

He doesn’t question the veracity of Razz’s tale. He doesn’t act surprised or shocked. He simply accepts what the Elite Ranger tells him; not out of a sudden sense of trust, but because it makes a certain amount of sense to him.

It’s definitely an asset he’ll remember to keep in mind. As far as Tam can tell, his superiors had been more than right to grant Razz the Elite rank.
