The trek through the mountain path that leads to Meteor Falls is no joke, but that’s kind of the point. The challenge that comes with it... and also the fact that because it’s so challenging, it’s really unlikely that she’ll run into any of the typical casual hikers that are as annoying as can be. The last thing she needs is people recognizing her, much less people asking her to appear in the pictures they take for the sake of seeming “outdoorsy” in their dating app profiles.

At least the scenery is nice. For all of its constant fucked up events, Hoenn is admittedly a beautiful place, and Fae has been having a great time taking occasional pictures while walking with her Mightyena. She even managed to snap one of one of those weird glowing crystal flowers that only seem to grow in this region, and she’ll likely upload it to her social media accounts later (once she’s done with the hike, in case some weirdo figures out where she is).

”Thank fuck.” Fae exclaims when the announcement coming from her smartwatch interrupts the music she’s been listening to, and with a deep breath, she sits on a rock to take a break. The Mightyena approaches then, wagging his tail, and for how annoyed she seems, it’s faintly that she smiles when petting the canine.

Those days, Gunner did not visit home often. Work at Wesson and Sons occupied most of his days, then the demands of the Bureau took up his nights. On his free days, he volunteered for the Valor initiative that his boss had set up. Finding time in his schedule to return to Fallarbor, have dinner with his parents, and spend the night at his childhood home had become more and more scarce — something he hoped he wouldn't regret, not with the impending meteor.[break][break]

"Mom and Dad want you to come up for dinner next weekend," Gunner said into his phone as he hiked the familiar mountain trails of Route 114, his Alolan Sandslash keeping pace at his side.[break][break]

When he and his brother were kids, they often sought the paths as respite from the unceasing demands of their parents. The same brother was on the other end of the phone line, ensconced somewhere in an office. "They want to hear what you're doing. I don't know half of it as well as you."[break][break]

Between the university and the museum, though, GIDEON GRAVES was busy, too. As expected.[break][break]

"Okay, I'll talk to you later. See you."[break][break]

He hung up just as he rounded a corner to see a young woman seated upon a rock. Though the sight of another hiker did not phase him, something about her face made him pause. Had he seen her before somewhere?[break][break]

"Good afternoon," Gunner said in greeting, his tone neutral. "Not many hikers come up this far." It was true, too. Most chose the easier routes closer to the base of the mountain.

It’s the Mightyena that notices them first, pointed ears perking up with the sound of footsteps. It turns to look at the stranger, crimson eyes fixing on both him and his pokémon, and within a moment, so do those of its trainer. Hers are yellow and in them shines something that is wild and dangerous.

”Sure don’t. Didn’t think I’d run into anyone out here.”

Fae Madden has played a plethora of different roles; she can be cool, she can be sophisticated, she can be sweet, and she can be the most amazing woman in the world. It can often result in people expecting all of these things from her, and so when they meet her they can end up surprised by sight like the smirk she flashes in the stranger’s way – as sharp as a razor’s edge.

Sharp as the fangs her Mightyena bares a second later, its gaze turning to the nearby bushes. It growls, menacing – hackles raised.
[break][break]
It’s an INTIMIDATING sight, and its SNARLING clearly affects the Zweilous that appears from among the bushes.
[break][break]
”I swear you pick fights wherever you go.” Her eyes roll. ”Fine, but don’t get carried away.”
[break][break]
As much as Cicero may be her companion, he loves a good fight, and that becomes clear when he quickly takes down the Zweilous with his ROUGH PLAY.

Fae turns to the stranger and shrugs then, not really being at all apologetic.

"Oh... Are you from around here?"
[break][break]
There's a distinctively Unovan note to her words, although perhaps not as noticeable as that of most. Years of training in learning how to use different accents have diminished her own.

Gunner's face remained impassive as he beheld the strange woman's smirk and as her Mightyena attacked an approaching wild Pokémon. Without missing a beat, he said to her, "I grew up here."[break][break]

From their vantage point high on the mountain trail, they could easily see Fallarbor in the distance. He pointed in the general area of his neighborhood. Somewhere down there, his mother was reading a novel with her afternoon tea, and his father was washing the laundry.[break][break]

"Are you?" Gunner asked, turning his equally golden gaze back to the woman. She did look familiar. Was she someone from Fallarbor? The town was not so small that everyone knew each other, but still…[break][break]

As this exchange occurred, a Baltoy emerged from the underbrush, hovering in Gunner's direction. Pelleas stepped between them, causing the wild Pokémon to flinch with a well-aimed ICICLE CRASH.[break][break]

The noise drew her trainer's attention. He pondered the startled Baltoy for a moment before tossing a Poké Ball at it.

”Fallarbor, hm?” A slight smile adorns her expression when turning to look in the direction of the town – soft yet fleeting in nature. ”Must’ve been nice to grow up in a place like that.”

She can’t relate, not really, for Castelia City is as busy as cities can get, but she can understand. She’s played characters like that one too many times. When she turns to look at him again, the smile has faded, but there’s a new curiosity shining in her gaze.

”Hmm… He’s hot, but he doesn’t really give off the “smalltown boy” vibe, does he?”
[break][break]
Trying to understand the nature of people is somewhat of a habit of hers, and yet one that finds itself interrupted by the heavy PRESSURE that fills the air there and then. The Mightyena growls, defensive, and all it takes is one command for him to go find the pokémon responsible – a Weavile that falls victim to Cicero’s FIRE FANGS.

”Hell, that’s much better.” Fae sighs in relief once the PRESSURE fades as a result of the Weavile being caught in a pokéball (hers are pink and purple: Dream Balls). There’s a short chuckle with it, and it’s then and only then that she gives an answer to the stranger’s question:

”I’m from Unova, actually.” She considers introducing herself, but instances when she can have a normal conversation with people without being recognized are all too rare these days. "...Can I ask you a question?"

An eyebrow is raised, yellow eyes fixed on gold ones.

Gunner shrugged, seeming not to notice how the woman was regarding him. "It was nice enough. My brother and I always spent our time in these woods and on this mountain."[break][break]

When they weren't studying, of course.[break][break]

A Donphan ambled into view, his snout swinging to and fro as he sniffed for food along the edge of the trail. Pelleas looked up at Gunner in inquiry. At a nod from his master, the Sandslash tackled the Donphan with IRON HEAD, knocking the small elephant to the ground. Gunner tossed a Poké Ball to capture him.[break][break]

"Unova? You've come a long way," he commented, turning once more to the lady seated on the rock. Upon closer examination, she did look like she hailed from there, especially considering her chic hairstyle and choice of clothing.[break][break]

Then why couldn't he shake the feeling he'd seen her before?[break][break]

"What's your question?"

A brother. The mention of it makes her think of Hailee Jacobs and the ways in which they’d spend their time together as kids. Even back then, Fae had been busy with her acting career and everything else, but she had always made time for her little sister. Some things never change.

”That’s kind of cute.” She smirks, leaving it unclear if she actually means it or if she’s just teasing him.

A foot is placed on the rock, her white sneakers being far from pristine after such a difficult trek, and resting her forearms on her knee, she looks towards Fallarbor before turning to face the stranger again. A hand pats the spot on the rock next to her, as if inviting him to take a seat. Black polish coats her nails.

In the corner of her eye she can see the scarecrow-like appearance of a Cacturne, but it’s currently too far to be a concern to both her and the Mightyena that also looks at the stranger.

Fae is much more preoccupied with her question at the moment.

”What do you like so much about Hoenn?”
[break][break]
She’s serious, but she knows the question is probably not an easy one to answer. Fae looks at him, waiting.

Gunner's eyebrows rose when the woman gestured for him to sit next to her. His first instinct was to refuse, since he wanted to stretch his legs on the hike and muse on various things occupying his brain — the meteor, the primal crystals, the recent intel disseminated to agents warning of Team Rocket's upcoming attack.[break][break]

But he supposed he could use a break from trekking around, so he shrugged off his backpack and lowered himself onto the rock beside his fellow hiker.[break][break]

"What do I like about Hoenn?" Gunner repeated, contemplating his answer. A Nincada scuttled along the trail, passing them harmlessly.[break][break]

During his career as a special agent for the Hoenn Bureau of Intelligence and Counterterrorism, he had visited every region. He enjoyed the cuisine, the culture, the sights, and the people, but he had never once thought about quitting his job to move to a different country.[break][break]

"I guess, because it's my home, it's where everything I know and love is."[break][break]

Gunner turned his head to give the woman a serious look that conveyed the sincerity of his answer.
