Up until that moment, Zev had no reason to use his crystalline armor. Kouji was a grunt, and barely an adult on top of that. Having to use his Avatar powers on someone of such low rank, no matter how impudent, would have been a show of weakness.[break][break]

Now that Zev had bested Kouji in a spar, however, that concern was null and void. And so they emerged, countless crystal shards rising from the Beast's skin like rocks revealed by a receding tide.[break][break]

Blacker than night, they neither gleamed nor glowed; instead, they seemed to absorb all light. And they covered every inch of Zev, hiding all but the piercing blue of his gaze as he stared at Kouji.[break][break]

When the Beast spoke, his voice exuded the cold confidence of a man assured in his immortality.[break][break]

His eyes opened up slightly wider, and his breath hitched in his throat, that sight had taken down his work, but at the same time, that sight had also been their saviour once, that metal that ate all night.

But to Kouji, it only held bad memories, and in that lightless unreflectiveness, he could see it, the eye he had lost, the leg that had stopped working, pain that touched his skin with each and ever single breeze. How each morning had brought unimaginable pain by just putting on his clothes, how the simple act of holding a pen shook him.
