It turned out that the riding classes were more affordable than Victor had anticipated. It hadn't been long after his meeting with Josh that he'd started looking around online, having been directed to the local gym's website by the leader himself. He also hadn't anticipated the sheer scale of the training facility that he was to meet Josh at. There were massive courts for battling, far larger than what Victor recalled having seen at other gyms or anywhere back home, and race tracks with all sorts of layouts, lengths, and obstacles. Fortunately, the staff had been kind enough and the signage clear enough that he was able to navigate the place easily despite his own poor sense of direction. He took a moment to marvel at it all before he felt the rough, instant prodding of a pair of antlers digging into his back,[break][break]

“Hey, watch it. He'll be here any minute,” Victor mumbled to the Stantler impatiently poking at him. [break][break]

Jaakko was the newest member of his team, a recent gift, but the deer was an ornery creature. Maybe it was because he was a little taller than the average deer Pokemon, his withers reaching close to five feet in height. Maybe it was because he didn't know Victor very well yet, and didn't have a modicum of respect for his new Trainer. Jaakko leaned forward, trying to nose his way into Victor's pocket to try and munch on his pack of cigarettes, his third attempt so far that day. Yeah, it was probably the second one.

The directions Victor had been given would lead him to an impressive array of Gym Trainers and Pokémon. Many of them were quite large for their size, including a Leafeon, Espeon, Umbreon, and Sylveon with some of the younger students. The class was small enough that there were enough of them to give some of the students a one-on-one experience. Some would go to Josh's Gym Trainers in pairs. was a lucky one, getting one-on-one lessons with the Master of Faster himself.

Seeing the Stantler next to him, Josh greeted Victor after sounding a shrill whistle. "Glad you could make it! Stantler is a great choice to learn with. They're for the most part well-rounded, and if you have a well-crafted saddle to accommodate them, they're not too rough on you." He didn't know that being on the species firsthand; he extrapolated from how Din, a cranky-looking Sawsbuck that had answered Josh's call, treated him. He gave the taller grass-type a treat in the hopes of appeasing her before mounting up.

"How much experience do you have, other than our stroll through Mauville Hills?" the Leader asked. "If you're comfortable, we can start with a diagnostic. One lap around the Split Oval surrounding the battle courts."

Victor was happy to see a familiar face among the crowd of other students and instructors. He nodded in acknowledgment as Josh greeted him, and smiled as he watched the Gym leader present an offering to his similarly disgruntled deer. He paused a bit at the mention of a 'well-crafted saddle'; Victor had only managed to get a bridle and reins by which to steer Jaakko in the short time between now and his last encounter with Josh. He nearly shuddered when he recalled just how expensive the prices were of the saddles he saw online. They would have to make do without one for now; besides, the collective voice of the Internet proclaimed that there were a variety of benefits to riding a Pokemon bareback, [break][break]

“None at all,” Victor admitted in response to the Gym Leader's inquiry, “And this is gonna be Jaakko's first rodeo, too.” [break][break]

He felt a huff of agitation from the Stantler next to him. Victor gave him an affectionate pat on the nose; Jaakko was going to have to get used to his terrible sense of humor. At the mention of the diagnostic, Victor nodded. This was something he was more or less prepared for. He stepped aside for a moment to slide over a mounting block provided by one of the staff members. Jaakko watched out of the corner of his eye with apparent disinterest as Victor stepped up and ran his hand over the Pokemon's side, [break][break]

“Alright, easy boy,” he muttered soothingly. [break][break]

Now was the moment of truth; he'd spent countless hours watching videos and scouring Internet searches in preparation for this. Stepping up the mounting block, he took a deep breath and swung one leg over Jaakko, using the momentum to slide himself onto the Stantler's back. Victor felt his legs involuntarily squeeze; he'd applied a little too much force in his mounting, and just barely caught himself before he could be sent tumbling over the Stantler's side. Jaakko responded with an anxious huff and a couple of shaky steps forward, but to the Pokemon's credit, he didn't buck or bolt. Victor gave the Pokemon an affection scrub on the withers, [break][break]

“Good boy! You're such a good boy,” Victor beamed as he happily rubbed the Stantler's short coat. That had gone much better than expected. He looked back at Josh, [break][break]“Alright, lead the way.”

With no experience, Josh would have to go over the basics of the basics with Victor. He had loosely done so during their jaunt through Mauville Hills, but that was with a Pokémon that was intelligent enough to fill in the gaps. While both Stantler and Ninetales had psychic powers, the fox's were a lot more refined, and could sense their rider's intentions more readily. There would be a lot more manual control with a Stantler. "We actually have a deal with Verdanturf Leather and Saddle, where Gym members get a sizable discount there. It's where I get all my gear from." He wouldn't push a Gym membership upon the young man, instead choosing to be subtle about it.

Victor's attitude toward Jaakko had been mirrored by the way he treated the rest of his Pokémon. Josh still thought he was Ranger material, but that would be a conversation for another day. Possibly over a meal. For now, he remained observant, watching Victor mount up. It was a bit of a struggle, but he ultimately was able to get settled in.

"Sure thing, but I'll periodically fall back and let you take the lead so I can observe you. Once we complete one lap around the course, I'll have a good idea where to start." Josh faced forward and gently squeezed his Sawsbuck's sides. Din snorted before trotting forward, up the incline as it made a gentle left turn. With a mild tug with his left hand. he guided the grass-type around the curve's inside line. If he were to hear the clopping of hooves behind him from Victor and Jaakko picking up the pace, he would fall back to watch them carefully.

Victor made a mental note to check out the shop Josh mentioned in Verdanturf as he gave a squeeze of the Stantler's sides. Jaakko snorted, and began to walk forward a few slow, ambling steps, following Josh and Din as they made their way onto the track. It was a little touch and go, both rider and Pokemon feeling each other out as Victor urged Jaakko to pick up the pace. Steer a little too hard in one direction, and the Stantler would over-correct and turn almost a full 90 degrees. Squeeze the sides a little too hard, and Jaakko would start to bound at a pace that was entirely uncomfortable for the trainer riding bareback. Riding Josh's Pokemon was leisurely compared to this; Victor hadn't realized how much effort it required to pilot a Pokemon who wasn't used to it. [break][break]

He also hadn't realized that Josh had fallen behind until Victor was finally able to keep Jaakko trotting at a comfortable pace without too much direct oversight, [break][break]

“So, uh, how are we doing?” Victor asked somewhat sheepishly. The Stantler's ears swiveled backwards, listening intently.

Josh and Din matched Victor's pace as he and Jaakko accelerated up the incline. He looked a little uncomfortable bareback, but he was sure the normal-type's fur helped. It was certainly softer than the bony back of an equine. It was clear to him after a while that the Stantler was a new acquisition, the Pokémon not used to Victor's weight yet. They became more stable as the hill was about to crest. The Gym Leader silently commanded Din to speed up, the Sawsbuck obliging until they were alongside the student and his partner.

"You've got good fundamentals," Josh complimented. "I can tell you picked up a lot from Mauville Hills and Mystic." The two were going about as fast as a trot could carry them, and that was a speed far faster than many with little to no experience were comfortable with. He was happy with his progress so far, but the real test would be how he handled the backstretch. "Now I want to see how you handle the rest. The downhill's coming." It wasn't a harsh downhill, but it was steep enough that Victor and Jaakko might end up coasting down it quite a bit faster than they had when they were climbing upward.

“You hear that, boy? You're doing great,” Victor chuckled, taking one hand off the reins just long enough to give Jaakko an affectionate pat. The Stantler snorted and shook his head. Victor was already contemplating what sort of treat he would reward the deer Pokemon with once this was all said and done. [break][break]

But they weren't out of the woods yet. At the mention of the downhill portion, Victor could feel himself involuntarily tighten his grip on the reins. He hadn't done any research on this part of riding Pokemon, and wasn't sure what exactly to expect. It certainly wasn't the increase in speed as Jaakko was carried by the descent, or the odd sensation of the deer Pokemon's loping gallop as they went. It was like the Pokemon was struggling to get his footing, despite the surface of the track being even and flat, his front legs almost seeming to bow out to each side with each bounding step. Victor found himself starting to slide forward from his seat on Jaakko's back as he was carried by both the speed and the angle of the slope, [break][break]

“Woah, easy Jaakko!” Victor called. He forced himself upright and leaned back, tugging on the Stantler's reins, if for no other reason than out of the fear that he was going to slide right off of the Pokemon's back. [break][break]

Maybe it was because they'd finally reached the bottom of the hill, or maybe something about his positioning had helped, but Victor felt Jaakko's gait slow down and sort of... even out, and become steadier, if that was the right way to describe it. Victor slowed the Stantler to a stop and gave him another affectionate pat on the side, [break][break]

“Sorry big guy, don't think I handled that very well,” he muttered in apology. The Stantler turned his head just enough to look at his trainer from out of the corner of his eye and huffed. Victor wasn't sure if that was a good sign or a bad one as the Pokemon turned to face forward once again.

As the downhill forced Jaakko into a canter, Josh carefully observed the student's posture and the way he Stantler was compensating. It was apparent as the two crossed the line that both the balance of the Pokémon and Victor's balance needed some work. What needed more work, though, was their bond.

"For someone with as little experience as you have, you did pretty well!" Josh complimented as he reined Din to a stop. "I wanted to give you some feedback. I know the cost is a concern, but you would really benefit from a saddle, or at least a blanket. It helps with balance a surprising amount. We have a deal with Verdanturf where you can get a voucher for one as part of a new one-year membership with Mauville Gym. They'll custom-fit it to your Pokémon for maximum flexibility for the Pokémon and maximum reinforcement for you."

Josh's eyes shifted toward Jaakko. The heavy breath was in his mind an indicator that the Stantler wasn't thrilled with the way they were being controlled. "You said that Jaakko was a fresh catch, right? That's another mistake beginning riders make. You can't just hop on a Pokémon that's freshly caught. That's something even expert Rangers have trouble with. You need to really understand your Pokémon first. Once that bond is there, you'll find your Stantler much easier to control, almost like you and your mount are of one mind."

With the two having crossed the starting line, Josh would help Victor get down from Jaakko if he needed it. "If you want practice on something similar, Din's the closest I have. I don't have a Stantler at my Gym, sadly. Haven't been able to find one myself."

Josh had given him a lot to think about as Victor slipped off of Jaakko's back with the Gym Leader's assistance. For one thing, there was the matter of the free saddle voucher. Victor wasn't sure exactly what the gym membership might entail, but the prospect of free stuff did get the old gears turning. But, those thoughts were quickly dashed when he considered his relationship (or lack thereof) with the Stantler he was trying to ride in the first place. As if reading his mind (and who knows, the Pokemon might be), Jaakko leaned over to nibble at the sleeve of Victor's thin windbreaker. His brow furrowed as he gently shoved the deer's head aside. Victor didn't consider himself much of a trainer; he hoped just being a kind traveling companion would be enough to win the cervid over as time went on, [break][break]

“Ah, that's fair,” Victor acknowledged, a little downtrodden and a little bashful. But there was no point in lamenting his shortcomings; at least, not when there was something proactive he could do in the moment. He piped up again, [break][break]

“Some more practice sounds good. I'm sure riding Din'll be just fine.”

The total cost of the membership was, of course, greater than the cost of the voucher, but it was a perk of committing for an entire year. On top of that, it would be cheaper to buy a membership for the full year than twelve individual months. Other benefits included unfettered access to the Racing Grounds during hours of operation, priority call and email routing, three free tickets per month to a Gym challenge, and more. For anyone looking to improve for the Gym circuit or anyone particularly invested in his classes, it was worth their while.

"Remember what they taught in school, Victor. Pokémon have personalities, just like us. It's ultimately up to the trainer to determine and adapt to those personalities. Make sure to be patient with your Pokémon; I've got a few that even I'm still trying to understand. Some will warm up to you in a day. Others can take months. Be patient, and there's no heart you can't open the door to."

Victor's willingness to swap to the Sawsbuck made Josh smile on the inside. Din would be a great Pokémon to learn with, especially with the fall making her a bit reserved. Winter was coming, though, and she did not like the inter. With a shrill whistle, another of the Gym Leader's Pokémon joined the Grass-type, and in a dramatic way. A whinny came from the northeast, a black and yellow-striped equine dashing toward the Gym Leader before rearing in front of him. The excited Zebstrika nuzzled Josh, even causing him to flinch from the static of a loud spark. It must have been a powerful one for someone known to be around electric Pokémon to react so. "Come on, Raiden! Don't scare the poor guy off!"

If Victor needed any help hopping aboard Din, Josh would do so before climbing atop Raiden. "If you're ready to go faster, Din does know how to use Agility. It's one of the more basic ways for a Pokémon to put on more speed. Raiden and I will try to stay close behind. I mostly want to see if the root of the issue is Jaakko or your control of him." With that, the Gym Leader would again leave Victor to set the pace.

The Gym Leader's earnestness was heartwarming. Be patient, and there's no heart you can't open the door to. Victor supposed that one didn't become a Gym Leader and Pokemon Ranger without having such convictions, but still, it was certainly not a sentiment that all trainers shared. There was also another part of Victor, maybe selfish and maybe just professional, that thought that'd make a rather good quote if he was writing for any publications worth reading, [break][break]

“You got that right,” he smiled, “Jaakko's a good boy. I'm sure he'll come around.”[break][break]

Even though he knew it was coming, he couldn't help but flinch slightly at the shrill whistle used to summon Josh's next mount of choice. He also couldn't help but be taken somewhat aback by the flurry of hooves and sparks as the Pokemon dashed up to them, all eagerness and electricity. As the Zebstrika happily greeted it's trainer, Victor looked from the Pokemon towards the northwest from whence it came and back again. Jaakko snorted and shook his head. Victor got the impression that neither he nor his Pokemon were interested in traveling at such speeds. [break][break]

Since there wasn't a mounting block in sight (and Victor greatly doubted his ability to take the leaping jump onto Din that he'd seen in countless online videos), he accepted the Gym Leader's offer of assistance in hopping onto the Sawsbuck. He listened intently to Josh's instruction and took a deep breath as he secured his grip on the larger deer's reins. Nodding, he gave a gentle squeeze of the Pokemon's sides to urge it to a walk, taking note of Jaakko following behind, [break][break]

“Agility, huh? Are there any other Pokemon moves that are useful for riding?” [break][break]

The conversation was partly out of genuine curiosity and partly out of Victor's desire to distract himself somewhat as he rode Din. Since his attempt at riding Jaakko had been less than impressive, he was determined to make up for his perceived shortcomings. Victor kept his back as rigid as he could, but found himself continuously having to bring his elbows back to his sides as he swayed slightly on the deer's back with each step. Talking also helped him to remember to breathe, of all things, as he was quickly beginning to find himself holding his breath involuntarily while he used as much willpower as he could muster to pilot the Sawsbuck.

Normally, a Zebstrika would be a great steed to learn with. Their running stroke was steady, not too bumpy, and the Pokémon itself was sturdy. Raiden's competitive nature did not lend him to being so; he was one swift equine, occasionally accelerating to full gallop without a command. If Victor was having difficulty with Jaakko, then Raiden would be far too fast for him. Din was much more chill, if a little reserved.

The Sawsbuck was obedient, walking forward and only speeding up at Victor's command. Raiden looked annoyed at the leisurely pace the student led with, the Gym Leader having the patience of a saint for putting up with the Zebstrika. "You're doing great up there! I imagine you're seeing the similarities to Jaakko already."

When asked about other moves commony used aboard Pokémon, Josh rattled off the most common ones. "There's Quick Attack, Trailblaze, Double Team, Extreme Speed, and Aqua Jet for on the water. Any move that lets the Pokémon put on a burst of speed, really." There were quite a few more that didn't come to mind right away. "I wouldn't try having your Pokémon use one until you've mastered the basics, though. Even a simple Quick Attack is... really fast."

Victor was, in fact, noticing some similarities between Din and Jaakko. One thing he was coming to appreciate from both Pokemon was the relatively smooth ride each provided. It was an altogether different experience from the bounding gallop of Josh's Ninetales, and while he did feel himself move a little to each side when riding either deer Pokemon, his tailbone was noticeably less sore. Between this and the little bit of praise from Josh, Victor braced himself as he urged Din to a trot. He was determined to get good at this, [break][break]

“I can imagine!” Victor replied, “I bet moves like that come in handy for Gym challenges, though. But man, I imagine it'd be one hell of a wipeout if you crash into something while using an attack like that.”

Josh looked please with Victor's rising confidence, Din's trot a little bouncier than before. If a sensitive tailbond was an issue for him, he could watch the running strokes of many Pokémon and come to a decision based on that. Pokémon that had smoother running strokes had a tendency to be slower, but there were noteworthy exceptions. Arcanine, despite their great size and the breadth of their strides, weren't too challenging to hold onto, though their extremely high speed might scare Victor.

"Feels great, doesn't it?" Josh called out as he squeezed Raiden's sides to match Din's speed. "They do, both for battles and for riding! The first time you get on one will scare you, but it's just so liberating going so fast you're hard to see." Crashes were a valid safety point to ask. "That's why I recommend only using them in wide open fields. And that's not even counting Z-Moves." Josh had developed a Quick Attack Z-Move that was perhaps faster than any other Pokémon move out there.

There was a certain exhilaration that had begun to course through Victor as the Sawsbuck beneath him picked up speed. Sure, there was some level of physical discomfort as his body lightly bounced up and down, but Victor was starting to really understand the appeal of the sport. But the idea of moving so fast that he'd become a blur was still a daunting prospect to be sure; he decided that was something that was more in Josh's wheelhouse than his own, [break][break]

“Z-Moves? Yeesh,” Victor called in reply, “I couldn't even imagine. You could probably break the sound barrier pulling something like that.” [break][break]

As he successfully rounded a corner of the track, Victor tightened his grip on the reins. Alright, now it was time to really put his budding skills to the test. He squeezed his legs a little tighter around Din's sides and urged the Pokemon to a full-on gallop. Victor felt himself leaning forward as they picked up speed. They probably weren't going all that fast in the grand scheme of things, but there was a newfound thrill coursing through Victor as they practically soared down the track. He found himself beaming in delight as they sped past the environs around them; he was beginning to understand how one could become as enthralled with the sport as Josh was.
